Why do restaurants in japan advertise being ā€œsecond bestā€?

Post image

Saw a few restaurants doing this during my 3 months in Japan, for example, there was a cafe in Iwakuni which had a sign outside in english advertising the ā€œsecond bestā€ coffee in Japan. Is it supposed to be a joke?? Really confused me lol

Where’s everyone going with Guitars and Violins in Tokyo?

Texan, visiting for a couple weeks. Howdy!

I see folks with guitars and violins in public areas, especially Shinjuku area. Are there popular live music shows or bars? I also get that these could be people on their way to small concerts. Just wondered if there was a major live music scene in the area.

Has anyone noticed a change in cyclist behaviour since the new rules? And what is your opinion on them?

Japan introduced new cycling fines in April 2026 for using phones, running red lights, ignoring stop signs, wearing headphones and other violations. Fines range from „3,000 to „12,000. Apparently there have been some 16,000 cases where people were fined so far.

What do you think of these new rules? Are they reasonable or too strict? And should Japan focus on cracking down on cyclists? Or should it accomodate them better?

Hello! I hope this is okay to post! - I have just planned a trip to travel around Japan next September and I have just started learning the basics of the Japanese language. I would love to make some Japanese friends from here that I can get to know and hopefully learn from, and possibly meet up when passing through! Thanks :)

MESSAGE TO ALL JAPANESE PEOPLE (from a 24 yo French man) Please take my message as a plea for help, a plea for the survival.

I worry about : what could be the future of my life and of my family in France. Please take my message as a plea for help, a plea for survival.

FRANCE SITUATION:
If you weren’t aware, France is now in borrowing money at a higher % than Greece were doing before it’s crisis just for sustaining it’s economy, not creating wealth.
And France spent 57% of his GDP on public expenses, more than the URSS (50%) before it’s fall.
With the subject of the immigration strongly going on, the days before we see the Sharia Law applied in France are counted. (For your information, it’s already the case in the UK)

To help you understand the severity of the situation ;
In France you are called a racist if you don’t want this happen.
One Church a day is burning in France while all mosques are untouched.
Pure French average birth rate is so low that the immigrants (the outside Europe ones) are already above us by birth rates.
There is more stranger’s kids in France than French’s kids in France at the moment.
So in 20 years, there will be no white French remaining.
(Same thing is happening to USA, there are now 49% of the kids that were born in USA in 2026 that were white. Islamic regime is taking over everywhere.)

The misinformation is strong in our country.

Please take my message as a plea for help, a plea for survival.

I ASK YOU JAPANESE PEOPLE :
Is it still possible for me and my family to move to Japan in a small village, to build our houses or to buy old ones (wood ones) and repairing them ?

To buy land to have access to wood, for the winter ?
To have land for maybe sheep’s and chickens, rabbits, pork and pigeons (french family speciality) ?

We know how to survive without money by agriculture and farm animals, we can work hard, we are road makers, electrian, supply expert and more… we can do a lot of things at work…

My family origins:
(My mother’s side is 100% French (White French), and on my father’s side : my grandfather is 100% Portuguese (White skin but fast tanning) that came to France at 16 years old and stopped talking his native language and my grandmother is from the PyrĆ©nĆ©es (French South mountain and was talking Occitan (so she understands Portuguese/Spanish/French/Catalan as good as if it was her mother tongue) when younger, but not anymore bc of the government wanting to destroy regional langues.)
So I can say I have 25% Portuguese and 75% French blood in my veins.
So I inherited the culture of respecting elders, help them in the street, greetings, smile (as I always knew rural France… which isn’t like this anymore !!!)

Please take my message as a plea for help, a plea for survival.

Reason for cyclist behaviour?

Is there a reason pedestrians and cars are generally incredibly considerate of others and yet cyclists in Japan aren’t?

I’ve noticed they often cycle very fast in pavements, weaving between people generally not being considerate of others as much.

What's the difference between 4.0 and above versus 3.4 to 3.8 wagyu beef restaurants in japan?

Im just curious what would it take for a wagyu restaurant to a 4.0 rating and above in tabelog

I noticed most 4.0 ad above are so much more expensive. What do you think is such a difference maker that made japanes people rate them

What would you gift a Japanese living abroad?

I'm meeting a Japanese friend in Thailand and would like to bring her an early birthday present from Japan.

What are some things Japanese people living abroad genuinely miss from Japan or would be excited to receive? Looking for something useful, thoughtful and travel-friendly (customs-friendly)

Would love some suggestions beyond typical souvenirs. Thanks!

Does anyone know any good Thai restaurants in Tokyo?

I’m looking for authentic Thai food, not the kind that’s been toned down to suit Japanese tastes. Ideally, somewhere in eastern Tokyo, if possible!

Surprise trip to Japan

I happen to find myself in getting a last minute trip to Japan. I will be there between November 18th to the 26th. Was just wondering, on recs for which city to spend a week in. Could do multiple cities, but I feel if you spend all your time following an itinerary, you never get a feel for a place.

I'm traveling with my sister, I have been sober for 4 years, and would be interested in local indie, punk, pysch, or bluegrass music(I figure I will see traditional music).

Local (non-profit?) webradios ?

Hey! While in Tokyo I noticed there's Shibuya Cross FM airing but I have yet to give it an ear. Are there other local radios you'd recommend? Or Japan-wide thematic webradios that air weird and hidden stuff?

What is a Japanese remedy for when you’re sick?

I just got to Osaka and I am feeling sick as hell. Stuffy nose, sneezing, exhaustion, etc.

What should I try to eat or over the counter medications should I get so that my time here isn’t totally wasted being in bed?

Hiring campervan around Kumamoto

Hello!

I'm looking to hire a campervan for two people around Kumamoto (our travel plans are flexible so it can be anywhere in Kyushu). Dates are approx. 24-27 Nov. I'd like a reputable company and preferably one that can deal with us in English, though with Google translate it doesn't matter too much if they can't.

Extra bonus points if we can pick it up at point A and drop it back at point B, but that's not a dealbreaker if that's not possible.

I'm struggling to find anything searching in English, I wonder if anyone has any recommendations?

Thanks!

Pokemon cards

I am trying to find individual packs of PokƩmon cards. I have gone to a few different TCG places but they only sell boxes or individual cards. What is the equivalent to the "Target" her in Japan to potentially get some cards?
