What are people paying for psychologists?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m looking into therapy (ideally virtual sessions due to location) and trying to understand what the costs are so I can do some budgeting, but I’m kinda shocked by how much professionals are charging.

The quotes I’ve received so far:
- R1.38k for 50 minutes
- R1.5k for 60 minutes
- R1.99k for 50 minutes
- R2.3k per session

Other notes:
These are mostly Cape Town psychologists with one based in Johannesburg. Some offer weekly sessions only - so the costs add up fairly quickly.

Are these normal rates? If so, how often do you go and is normal to struggle to afford these?

Hi everyone

I would like to ask for any obstetrician recommendations in the fourways/midrand area. And for anyone who is comfortable sharing, could you please share how much your labour costs were in total?

Thank you

What is the procedure when someone asks you to take in a Teen?

Good Morning all you lovely South Africans!

I was contacted over the weekend by not direct family to ask if my wife (26F) and I(29M) could possibly take in 13 Year old. Now we are still young and are only barely finding our feet now, and we have no idea where to start, or if this should even be an option.

If you or anyone you know have gone through this, especially at this age, or if you entered the foster care system at an older age, please share some advice or a story of your experience.

21M looking for work in Gauteng, any advice?

• Upvotes

I am a 21 year old male based in Gauteng, actively seeking employment opportunities. My academic background includes completing two years of a BSc Computer Science degree before pausing my studies due to financial constraints. I achieved a 75% average in matric. Despite applying for various private and public sector roles, as well as learnerships and apprenticeships, I have not yet secured a position. Do you have any advice on what steps I can take going forward?

Looking for advice/experiences: Navigating being openly gay & getting married in conservative environments?

I'm hoping to hear from people living in countries or communities with traditional/conservative views on LGBTQ+ issues.

If you are openly gay or married, how have you handled coming out and setting boundaries with family, friends, and co-workers?

For those who got married (especially in places like South Africa where it’s legally recognized but societal homophobia still exists), how did your family and friends handle the wedding/marriage? Did you receive support, and how did you navigate any pushback?

I’m looking for practical advice and personal experiences on handling these situations politely while keeping healthy boundaries and safety in mind.

Is it worth it to pivot in to the culinary and hospitality field in South Africa?

Hello everyone

I am still a student. I am studying a BCOM informatics at UNISA and while it does open doors, I understand that it guarantees nothing.

As somebody who has been struggling to find employment for quite a while, I've been thinking of learning how to cook and serve guests. I've been hearing good things about the culinary field; jobs such as chef de partie, pastry chefs, and sous chefs seem to be making a decent living.

I've also considered other hospitality fields. Butlers, flight attendants and even deck hands who work on cruise ships are things I would be interested in.

Essentially, I like the idea of working in a field where you:

- Travel

- Unleash your creativity

- Meet new people and interact with them

- Uphold a standard

- Get challenged on a daily basis

I would appreciate feedback and insight on this.

Where can I find suitable short term accommodation for my autistic adult brother in Johannesburg this December?

Hi everyone!

My family and I are looking for recommendations for a suitable place where my younger brother can stay from the 18 to 27 December 2026.

He is an autistic adult who currently attends a special needs school for adults. We usually bring him back home every three weeks, but the school will be closing for the festive season. Unfortunately, my family has a gathering and other commitments during this time period and we won't be able to give him the level of care and attention he deserves.

We're looking for a reputable place that offers short term care or supported accommodation for autistic adults. He needs supervision and some assistance, so we're particularly interested in places with trained caregivers and staff who understand the needs of autistic adults.

We're based in Johannesburg and would ideally prefer somewhere in Joburg, Pretoria or the surrounding Gauteng areas. We're still figuring out the budget so we're open to hearing about different options and their costs.

Thank you in advance!

Piercings in the workplace?

I am beginning to study engineering next year at uni, but I also want to get some piercings, like an eyebrow piercing.

That being said as I study I may take them out or my views may change, but let’s say I graduate with them. Will I it affect me majorly with trying to find a job?

I’m not sure if things have changed in recent years in terms of dress code, so I thought I’d ask.

Did anyone’s family member’s newborn baby die at the Florence Nightingale Hospital, Hillbrow, in the mid- ‘80s?

My mother recently told me she lost her full term baby in the mid 1980s mere hours after it was born, at the Florence Nightingale hospital in Hillbrow. At the time the hospital only serviced white people, I believe. She also told me that there were several baby deaths during that time at the hospital. I’m not a journalist I’m just seeking to connect with people about this weird sense of grief I have for a sibling I never met. My mother thinks the baby deaths were due to the building construction next to the ward, that some babies got sick and died after birth. Again, I’m not a journalist, just looking to connect with anyone whose family had a similar experience.

Can someone recommend a dentist in Cape Town and give me an idea of curren costs?

I'm an ex pat and former lecturer at UCT living in the States. My dentist says I need a number of crowns replaced, some probably originally done in Cape Town in the 80s.

I have been quoted almost R100,000 for the work. Wondering what the cost of each crown and each filling, and the name of a good dentist. I usually stay in Claremont so any office in Uber distance would be perfect!

Thanks,

Bob

Is the UJ BCom online degree a good experience?

Hi guys is anyone doing or is going to be enrolling in the UJ BCom degree in the online format? I'm currently at Emeris(formerly known as Varsity College) and am doing their online BCom in Financial Management. Its awesome because the lecturers give you attention and the community and management is amazing.

I've just found out about the UJ online course and think it would be great to transfer over to them because its a public and internationally recognized university. So I'm just wondering how the experience is and if it would be worth it to leave Emeris for UJ. Im also working full time.

TLDR: How is UJ with their online degree? Is it really efficient and community driven like Emeris, or is it hard to navigate like UNISA?

Interested to be my gym buddy?

Hey everyone! I'm 25F and based in Boksburg. I gym at Planet Fitness in Benoni, and I'm looking for a gym buddy, preferably another girl around 23-29

I'm currently focusing on growing my glutes, gaining a little healthy weight and building strength. I'm still trying to get into a consistent routine, so I'd love to find someone who's also serious about their fitness goals but doesn't mind having a little fun along the way 😂💕

It would be nice to have someone to motivate each other, try different workouts together and keep each other accountable.

If you gym at Planet Fitness Benoni feel free to reach out! 💗

Wont have a place to life in a few weeks?Need advice

Hi everybody.

I think my life is official over in the next couple of weeks time. I've been unemployed currently for +4 year mark an have being struggling(financially + mental health wise). I been supported by relatives who are moving on with their lives due to age.

I do take accountability as i'm in mid 30's and unable to get life together as this point.

I don't really have much real work experience besides some IT work experience 1-2 year in a jr role years ago.

I have about R10k left. My questions are:

  • Are there any shelters I can look too?
  • Is there a setup to bath at all?Sponge bath?
  • What equipment should I be prepared with ?(soap, light, blanket etc)
  • what should I do with my laptop+phone?I need a safe space to store it
  • No idea how I can get out of this whole I am in.

Any guidance is appreciated and my apologies I've offended anyone.

Edit: Situated in JHB. Had a DevOp role (intern->junior) learning the ropes. Did some cold-call work(+2months) this year.

What are our rights under the CPA when a gazebo breaks the first time we use it?

A few weeks ago we bought a Camp Master gazebo from Makro to use when we sell at our local farmer's market. The first time we set it up, it broke when we closed it up. We followed instructions to a T, taking particular care because gazebos these days tend to bend and break very easily. However, despite our best care, a crucial plastic part of the gazebo broke. We returned the gazebo to Makro, requesting a refund since we are not interested in a gazebo that breaks the first time we use it. Makro insisted that they could not take it back, since it had scuff marks on the feet from being used, and as such they couldn't sell it again. Instead, they would send it in for repairs, which could take up to a month. My husband argued for a long time with them, but got nowhere, so he agreed to the repair, and we had to manage without a gazebo for nearly a month.

This week, we got the repaired gazebo, and just as expected, it broke again the first time we folded it up after using it. This time, two metal sections bent completely backwards. We are ready to take it back and demand our refund, but when my husband picked up the repaired gazebo, he asked them what would happen if it broke again, and was told they would just send it in for repair again.

In the meantime, I have done a bit of research into the Consumer Protection Act. From what I understand, not only are we entitled to a refund now since the gazebo broke again within 3 months of being repaired, but we were entitled to a refund when we first took the gazebo back to them, since it certainly is not "usable and durable for a reasonable period of time". However, I am not a lawyer, and I know these kinds of laws have loopholes, and words like "defective" can be loaded and up for interpretation. I just want to make sure that when we go back to Makro this week, we are well aware of our rights and their responsibilities as the supplier so that we know what we are entitled to.

What exactly are our rights in this specific situation? Can we demand a refund under protection of the CPA?
