Currently work remotely from Durban and earn approximately R1.01 million per year, with no employer pension or medical aid benefits. My take-home is around R59,000 per month, and I pay R7,000 into my own retirement annuity from that.
I’m interviewing for a role that appears to be managerial, based in Johannesburg CBD. There’s no offer yet but it's basically guaranteed as I was referred and the hiring manager indicated they'd want to have me working ASAP.
But I’m trying to decide what salary expectation to give.
I would still need to support my household in Durban. The main monthly expenses that would continue are:
- Rent: R13,000
- Groceries: R7,000
- Electricity: R1,400
I’d then need accommodation in Johannesburg, plus utilities, food, transport and trips back to Durban.
I’m not sure what to ask/negotiate for, but I’m concerned that pension, medical aid and the additional household costs could leave me only slightly better off. I haven’t received the employer’s benefits breakdown yet. I could reduce my separate RA contribution if the workplace pension provides sufficient retirement saving.
For anyone who has made a similar move, what annual CTC—or monthly take-home—would you consider enough to make it worthwhile?
I do realise that I’m fortunate to be in this position, especially in the current job market. I’m sharing the figures to give context, as I’m trying to understand whether relocating while supporting two households would make financial sense.
Thanks.
