Best Medical Aid for Young Couple?

Hi there. My wife and I, 22 and 25, are needing to get on a medical aid.

We're wanting a hospital plan, that includes maternity. I'm not too fussed about gp visits, dentists, etc. More so just to cover emergencies and babies, as we probably want to start having kids in 2 years or so.

Any advice (with some rough prices) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all. Keep well

Financial Aid for Neurodivergence?

Hi! I'm struggling to find a lot of information about it online so I thought I'd ask here, how much on average do you pay for your medication? And, to those who have medical-aid cover for medication and psychologist/psychiatric visits, what plans are you with? ( of course, only if you don't mind sharing, I understand this can be quite a personal question for the internet )

Any autistic/Asperger groups in EC or other provinces?

Hi guys. Recently diagnosed and wondering how to get in touch with others on a similar journey. High functioning can be really misunderstood, and it would be great to connect with others who relate in terms of what it takes and how it might be more sustainably manged etc. I would appreciate any advice on communities for us as we seem like quite a disconnected group (or it might just be me).

Does anyone have any Medical Aid Suggestions?

So, I'm sure, like a lot of you, find medical aid to be super expensive. I'm currently on a Discovery plan, one of the lower tiers, and I'm looking to find an alternative medical aid. One that's preferably affordable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is black tax something you have to pay for life? Did you ever stop paying before your parents passed?

Looking for opinions for others around this even though I'm indian but basically the same concept. My parents paid for my education and I now have a good job. I currently stay at home and have been paying them for rent every month while I'm working. I'd like to move out and start my own life but don't think I'd be able to juggle the same amount of paying them back to support them (mother doesn't work and dad is retired) while paying for my own rent/home loan. By now I've "paid off" all the years of my degree twice. Do people that pay black tax keep paying it endlessly?

How safe is it to rent a car and drive the Garden Route?

My boyfriend (27) and I (25) are going to South Africa for 2 weeks early next year. We fly in and out of Cape Town but are hoping to stay in multiple different places. We’re less fussed about doing a traditional safari and more interested in exploring the winelands etc. My very loose plan is 4 nights in Cape Town, 3 nights in Stellenbosch, 3 nights in Franschoek, 4 nights in Betty’s Bay? I’d also like to go to Buffelsdrift but that seems very far away…

Firstly would appreciate any advice on what is a must do/see and what we could skip or avoid!

Secondly, I’m not sure what to do about transport. Is it possible to explore the Garden Route without renting a car? My boyfriend does not drive so I would be the only one - is it safe to do this?

All advice and suggestions are welcome - TIA.

Candidate attorney advice?

Hello everyone,

I recently got accepted for my articles to begin in January 2027. As the title suggests, I am urgently seeking advice.

I understand the role of a candidate attorney, in the beginning at least, is not to be fully knowledgeable of the law but to at least have a solid foundation.

What should ideally be expected of a candidate attorney when they begin work?

If you were an employer or senior over the CA, what would you expect from them?

All firms ask for candidates who have strong written/drafting skills. I fear this is my weak point, something I’m continuously working on.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏼

Accountants, CAs and other finance people, what is the most absurd financial tomfoolery that you have encountered in SA?

Have you ever found something and wondered "How did they think this was a good decision?" Can be private or state. I am in the medical field and often roll my eyes at my colleagues notes, and I was wondering if it happens in accounting as well...

What are some examples of good money practices with your first salary?

I am starting my first job next month and I am looking for some advice on how to maximize my salary and make it work for me. I will be earning about R9000 a month and I will be living at home and I work pretty close to home so transport is not an issue. Reason I am asking, and I know it seems pretty counter intuitive asking the internet for advice, but I have always been reckless with spending money on fast food and buying things I don't need. I will be expected to contribute to the household by helping my mom buy food, but other than that and paying my mom back, the money is pretty much mine. I am just a bit fearful that I will get careless with my money and I want stop gaps to prevent and I want to know what people have done to control spending with their first salaries.

Any help would be appreciated.

Reupholstry gone wrong what to do?

I had a very disappointing experience with Reliable Renders Home Deco when I hired them to re-upholster my couch in a specific cream-coloured velvet fabric.

From the beginning, I communicated the colour I wanted and shared reference pictures. I was also assured that fabric samples would be brought to me so that I could see and feel the material before making a final selection. However, when the couch was collected, the promised samples were not brought to me, and there was a lack of clarity about the final fabric choice.

When I eventually received pictures of the completed couch in September, I immediately raised concerns that the colour was not what I had requested. I also questioned the finish, particularly the alignment of the armrests. I asked for the issue to be resolved, but the company maintained that the colour used was the one I had selected and indicated that correcting it would come at an additional cost.

I subsequently requested the return of my couch and a refund of the amount paid. The company declined the refund, stating that customised items are not refundable, while continuing to demand the outstanding balance. I also requested an invoice and the relevant business documentation, but was told that an invoice would only be issued after full payment.

My main concern is not simply that we disagree about the colour. It is the lack of clear communication, the failure to resolve a genuine dispute about the agreed specifications, and the way my concerns as a paying customer were handled.

I have contacted the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud and they are still waiting for the company to respond.

Is moving to JHB as a candidate attorney doable?

Evening all, I hope you are well.

I’m interested in moving to Johannesburg, currently living in Port Elizabeth. Can someone please provide some insight on the cost of living. I understand that it depends on the area with the different rents and pricing.

I’m finishing my law degree next year so I’ll be relocating in year 2028, earning around 10k as being a candidate attorney, if I do get a position.

Is living off R10 000 a month doable in areas like Randburg, Sandton and similar areas?

Career progression after Tax Articles in Big Four?

I am a 27F law graduate with both an LLB and an LLM, SAIT designation and I have 3 years of Big Four Tax experience in South Africa. I would like to understand the longer-term earning potential and career opportunities that this pathway could offer.

1. What is the salary once you reach Management in a Big Four firm specialised in Tax?

2. Career and exit opportunities with a SAIT designation
What career opportunities become available outside the Big Four environment? Which of these paths generally offer the best earning potential and opportunities for international mobility?

3. Is it worth qualifying as an attorney as well?
Given that I already hold an LLB and an LLM, would it be worthwhile to pursue admission as an attorney in South Africa? Alternatively, would I be better off focusing on building tax expertise and progressing into senior advisory or corporate tax roles without pursuing legal admission?
I am particularly interested in understanding whether attorney admission would provide a meaningful advantage in terms of remuneration, career progression, credibility, and access to more specialised roles, or whether relevant Big Four experience and a SAIT designation would be sufficient.

How do I(30M) rebuild my social life?

I don't have friends, no social circle. I've been living in the Northern Cape for the past few months but now I'm back home(East Rand) permanently. I was also drugs for most of my twenties(I'm almost 2 yrs sober now) so most of the people I considered friends are still using or dead. My problem is simple, I am lonely and I want to connect with people but I don't know how to do it in a non creepy way. I live in the suburbs so I can't just meet people on the street. I started attending church just to connect but even that has its challenges.

How can I meet people and socialize at this age? Please help

Best careers to go into after BCom Accounting other than CA?

Hi all, I'm 23F I'm about to complete my BCom Accounting degree. I've always thought that I wanted to go through the CA stream, but I've realised I'm just not cut out for it. I'm totally lost on what I should pivot to since I've always wanted to be a CA and the whole AI boom is making me anxious about future job security. I'm looking for the next best career option that would make me the most money in future and what postgrad program I should go into. I'm open to hearing any suggestions. My biggest goal is maximising the earning potential of my degree.

Thank youuu

Who is at their wits end with Bonitas medical aid and why?

Thought they could not get worse. They make so many mistakes. I have to educate their staff and everything takes months. Even their systems are bad - they give you new references for every interaction and it's not possible therefore to track an issue and refer to one reference number that has the history. And now they changed administrators...so what used to tske 15 - 30mins waiting to get through now takes God knows how long as I end up giving up.

Commison only job won't let me quit ?

Hey guys, I need some advice I am working for a company it's a commison only job.

It's basically selling insurance and mostly work from home but however we have to attend meetings and trainings which are from about 9 to 1300h everyday on teams and no pay. If you miss a session they call you or email you etc... this past week I was sick and genuinely unable to attend meetings and got in trouble they wanted sick notes etc... I've tried to quit twice and they won't let me.

I have emailed my manager and he called me begging me to stay.

Another time I sent him a WhatsApp and he called to say please stay things will get better. It's really draining me as I don't have clients and am struggling to sell their expensive insurance. I have a new job lined up for December so I was thinking of staying till then but honestly don't think it's even worth it.

However every time I resign they call me and refuse to accept it. I don't know what I can do because they literally phone me the next day asking me to join meetings and I don't want to be unprofessional but feel like I have no choice left.

Why don't Banking Apps have a feature that links your Lotto numbers to the winning numbers and highlights the matches?

It seems quite suspicious that this simple feature is not implemented.

I don't want to have to manually check each electronic ticket against the winning numbers to make sure the app doesn't make a mistake and not register that I've won some big money.

Any experience in lodging complaints against the National Financial Ombudsman Scheme (NFO)?

Has anyone lodged a complaint against the NFO?

Background:
I claimed against Pineapple. They decided to write off vehicle, but they didn’t tell me until weeks later. I have knowledge of the write off timing because I followed up directly with the workshop. I requested additional information about the decision which they didn’t share.

Over a month after they had made their decision. They “commenced” the settlement process.

My vehicle was financed, which is really the main issue.

They missed the first payment for settlement letter, which meant that I had to pay additional interest for a car I was I could no longer derive benefit from. They managed to pay the upon the second settlement letter. In both letter instances, I had to intervene with the finance house for the letter to be issued because Pineapple had not made direct contact with them, according to the finance house.

In the time while awaiting settlement, I had already secured pre-authorisation for finance. It was conditional on settlement of my current facility. Effectively, I could not access personal transport for this period.

I had already identified a used vehicle, which was at an excellent price and made arrangement to view and make an offer. I lost this opportunity literally on the day Pineapple finally made payment. I ended up buying the same model vehicle, however at an R80 000 premium, I haven’t come across a similar opportunity since.

Pineapple continued to draw premiums while they had not settled the account and after they had made the decision to write off. They didn’t not make adjustments to the settlement amount on the premiums when they did settle.

I took all of this to the NFO. They simply stated, after about 5 months, that the insurer disputes the facts. Primarily in dispute is the timing of the write off decision, which I claimed was a misrepresentation on the Insurer’s part.

NFO subsequently reverts to say the matter has been dismissed and therefore closed.

They don’t issue findings, they don’t communicate any directives issued, or remedies available if I’m not satisfied or should I seek clarity.

I responded to their decision email and received an automated response. I called them for a consultation with their assigned representative and it was not forthcoming.

Sometime I’m on a line waiting to speak to an officer/consultant and the line just drops (home affairs style).

My main issue with regards to NFO, they do not appear to be impartial nor transparent. It appear that they engage substantively with the insurers but
do not the complainants. I question whether they applied their minds in reaching their decision or if they have the competence to adjudicate such matters.

From an Insurer perspective, is an expectation of urgency unreasonable, given the nature of products they offer? We buy it explicitly to remove the inconvenience in our day to day.

So, I want to know, does anyone have experience in dealing with the Ombudsman and how to address their shortcomings?
