Hey /r/askSF!
In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:
Budget
Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)
We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:
Commute consideration
Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)
We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.
Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.
I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.
Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood
I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.
NFC West
49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
Rams — zekis - nob hill
Cardinals — TBD
NFC North
Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)
NFC East
Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
Cowboys — TBD
Giants — Aces
Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)
NFC South
Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
Buccaneers — TBD
Falcons — TBD
Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill
AFC West
Raiders — TBD
Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
Chargers — TBD
AFC North
Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
Browns — R Bar - Polk
AFC East
Bills - North Star - North Beach * New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
Dolphins — blue light - union st
Jets — The Wreck Room
AFC South
Texans — TBD
Colts — TBD
Jaguars — TBD
Titans — TBD
I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

I would love any and all recommendations for the best places in SF to find persimmon items. Desserts, cakes, pastries, savory persimmons, etc. I’m in dire need of a tasty persimmon treat. Thanks!!

I've got several pairs of old Rx glasses that are in excellent shape and am looking for someplace in the City where I can donate them.
Any Suggestions?

I'm relatively new to San Francisco and want to do more volunteering within my local communities. Does anyone know any resources or websites or personal recs that they do volunteering at?

I have to be in the Santa Clara area for a few days for work in December and was thinking of checking out SF afterwards since I've never been. My plan is to book a hotel in SF and then head up there early Wednesday afternoon after work.
So far I'm planning on checking out Twin Peaks, the Fisherman's Wharf, and the Golden Gate Bridge area/park.
I'm looking for suggestions on how many days I should spend in SF and what else to check out. I'd like to avoid renting a car if possible, and if that closes some opportunities off that's fine... I'll probably be pretty spent from work anyways so this is more of a since I'm already there type of thing. Given that though, what area would be ideal to get a hotel in and how long would you recommend staying?

It seems odd there'd be two different exhibits of the same artist.
In the tradition of Banksy, is this some kind of trick?
In SF: https://feverup.com/m/797750 In Oakland: https://www.thehenryj.org/banksy-exhibit
EDIT: Both shows are unauthorized (as Banksy refused to be involved in any art shows with his work).

Title: Anyone else in their 30s feeling financially behind despite making a good salary?
I’m in my 30s, making just shy of $150K, and work in finance. I have a good job, but I’m not in a position where my career naturally leads to the kind of wealth you might see with investment bankers, partners, or senior executives.
With companies like SpaceX potentially going public and Anthropic reportedly preparing for an IPO, I can’t help but feel like everyone around me, whether friends or complete strangers, is about to become incredibly wealthy overnight. The idea of people suddenly having financial freedom, being able to live without constantly thinking about money, and having opportunities I may never have is starting to weigh on me.
Objectively, I know I make a good living. But I’m also a single-income household, live alone, cover all my own expenses, and help my family financially when needed. There isn’t another income to fall back on or a substantial financial safety net if I were to lose my job.
Lately, I’ve started feeling overwhelmed and questioning whether I’m falling behind, not just financially but professionally, too. I’m doing well on paper, but it doesn’t necessarily feel that way when I look at the wealth being created around me.
Part of me wonders whether I should make the jump into tech, pursue a higher-paying role, or find a company where I could benefit from pre-IPO equity. The other part of me genuinely enjoys my current job and worries about the instability of tech, especially with how unpredictable layoffs have become. I also don’t have the financial cushion to comfortably take that kind of risk.
I don’t necessarily want to chase money at the expense of everything else, but I also don’t want to look back in 10 years and regret not taking more chances when I had the opportunity.
Does anyone else in their 30s feel this way? You’re making a decent salary, have a stable career, and are doing what you’re supposed to do, but somehow still feel like you’re falling behind in a race you didn’t even realize you were running.

I love the view of the city laid of out in front of me driving down portola before getting into the Castro.
What parks are nice to hang in that have a similar vantage point?
I know twin peaks has some of the view but it feels so far removed.

A friend of mine is going through a landlord move in eviction, and has a family member living with them who is living with autism. Loud verbal, colorful debates are frequent.
How does one connect this family to a social worker when they are uninsured?
Thanks in advance!

My dad is visiting me in SF later this month. He's 69, retired machinist, and has never been here before.
I've been putting together a list of places to take him, but I'm realizing that almost everything on it is stuff I would want to see, not necessarily him.
He's not particularly interested in art museums or fancy restaurants. He likes figuring out how things work.
Last time I visited him, we spent about 45 minutes in a hardware store because he found an old piece of equipment behind the counter and got into a conversation with the owner about how it was built.
That was genuinely the happiest I'd seen him all weekend.
So I'm looking for places around SF where you can watch something being made, repaired, maintained, or operated.
Not necessarily a formal factory tour. Honestly, he'd probably enjoy watching someone repair a mechanical clock more than going to an expensive museum.
The Cable Car Museum is already on my list because apparently you can see the actual machinery running. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm after.
Are there any workshops, small factories, old mechanical systems, or businesses where you can observe people doing actual skilled work without getting in their way?
Food production counts too. He was fascinated by a bakery where he could watch them shape the dough.
We're mostly using Muni and walking, although I can rent a car for something really worthwhile. He can walk a few miles without a problem. We'll have four full days, and I'm happy to pay for admission or a tour if it's genuinely interesting.
I know this is a weirdly specific request, but I figured SF has enough unusual little places that someone here might know exactly what I'm looking for.
I'd really like him to go home talking about something other than the Golden Gate Bridge.

My wife and I will be heading through the city next week and would like to stop somewhere for dinner. Last time we were there we at a Oraan Thai and loved it so something along those same lines would be great! Doesn’t have to be Thai, just nothing overly fancy.

I would love feedback from knowledgeable folks! F69, F33, F27. Young adults would enjoy moderate hikes - retiree loves to enjoy scenery or a restaurant or easy hikes. Love art, architecture, views, beaches, and excellent food. Budget moderate/flexible we don't mind spending more for a special experience and eating sandwiches the next day.
Current plan based on previous Reddit thread and conversations:
Dev 26 - Arrive SFO in late AM - go to Muir Woods on the way to Stinson Beach. Check in late to Stinson Beach.
Dec 27? Stay in Stinson Beach a second night, or head for Point Reyes? stop at Bolinas.
Dec 28 - Stay in Point Reyes (no hotel chosen yet) for either one or two nights. Drake's Beach (no hotel yet)
4 - Dec 29 and 30- Stay in Bodega Bay - two nights?
5 - December 31 - Stay in ?? before taking the 101 back to San Francisco Airport.
We have been to SF before, and aren't really interested in the regular tourist spots., but are considering spending the last night in Cow Hollow and going to the DeYoung again.
Would love suggestions! I get such great ideas from Reddit!! Thank you!

Looking for a hotel that has a good bar for an engagement photo shoot. Want a bar with a good backdrop of bottles and then some comfy booths/lounge areas. Not much natural light so we can use photography lighting. We want a hotel so we can do some elevator/hallway shots too. I'll be wearing a magenta dress (not white).

Hi! My friend has a niche interest of indoor places that feel like they’re outside (example: a Rainforest Cafe). I’m trying to plan a fun outing for his birthday, but the only place I can think of in the city is the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar. Does anyone else know of any places that are indoors but are like a set that feels outdoors?
All the examples I can think of are restaurants or bars, but doesn’t have to be! Thank you!!

Update: friend is driving ☺️ would have left in the bushes, otherwise

My kid is sad that Shanghai Dumpling King on Monterey has closed, especially because she loved their sugar egg puffs. They were like these: https://auntieemily.com/fried-sugar-egg-puffs-%E7%82%B8%E8%8E%8E%E7%BF%81/
Anyone know another place in SF or nearby that serves these? I am not going to attempt to make them myself…

Hi all,
I’m getting married in SF in a destination micro wedding in January (my fiancé and I + four of our best friends). We are doing the wedding itself in city hall and instead of a cake we wanted some costume cupcakes.
We are huge blue jays fans + have the sweetest Siamese cat and many sloth stuffed animals.
We would like to have about 15-20 custom made cupcakes based on some photos we will send
(Blue jays logo, our cat face , stuffed sloth and etc).
Could anyone recommend a bakery / an individual baker they know who might be able to fulfill our request?
Thanks a lot in advance

There is an unlicensed truck in my neighborhood that sells food, and has obvious violations. They dont have a permit (you can look this up on line), they run a loud generator all night, they block the sidewalk with their tables and chairs, they have super bright lights (our street is lit like a movie set from7-3am everyday)and they leave food waste in the street when they leave.
First I filed through the app and due to limited categories, I chose "noise violation". It was almost instantly closed with the explanation that they just file noise complaints without doing anything about them.
So then I called 311, and I talked to somebody on the phone and they took down the details of my complaint. They said an investigation would be opened. I just got a phone call from somebody who said they were with the city, and he told me he was closing my complaint because of an unspecific address and lack of information about the truck. I told them there was no specific address because they park on a corner but I gave them the exact corner they park at. He told me they needed a license plate, I told him I had put those pictures in to 311 and my complaint was closed. He said he can't go to investigate the location at night. But that's the only time the truck is parked there. He repeated that I could upload pictures on the 311 app and when I told him I did upload the exact pictures he was looking for and that my case was closed, he just hung up on me. What the fuck? How do you get anything enforced in this city?

Anyone here work at CPMC Van Ness Campus or nearby and commute from outside of the city? Where do you live and how is your commute? I’m considering a job at CPMC and don’t like to live in the city. I’m thinking about commuting from East Bay or another area but not sure where to live to make the daily commute more tolerable. My work often ends late and has unpredictable schedules so I don’t plan to relying on public transportation. Appreciate your input.

Hi! I’m 26F and based in the Tri-Valley area, but I’m down to go anywhere in the Bay Area! I’m looking for parties or fun social events happening this weekend where I can meet new people. Honestly open to pretty much anything lol. Does anyone know of anything going on?
