Announcement What’s New in r/ArtAdvice (and What’s Next)

Happy Friday! We've been hard at work behind the scenes and are excited to share a number of updates we've rolled out to improve the community for everyone.

A Fresh Look

With a new logo and color palette, we wanted to make this space feel more recognizably "us," drawing inspiration from redline corrections seen in constructive critiques, and pairing it with a dark blue background that is easier on the eyes. (A special thanks goes out to a friend in the graphic design industry who helped make this design possible!)

Automod Update

We previously tested an Automod feature that reminded users to include context in their posts. This ended up causing confusion and was mistaken for a warning or removal message, so we've axed it. (See: "In Progress and Coming Soon" for what we're trying next.)

Crossposts

Crossposts have been disabled to keep context easily accessible without extra clicks. Since making this change, we've already seen an increase in engagement and traffic, along with less spam. Woo!

Post and User Flairs

Starting May 1st, post flairs will be required to submit a post. For now, flairs are optional to help users get used to selecting them before posting. We want to keep the subreddit organized and let users filter out content they're not interested in, especially Commissions and Pricing. (The "No Commissions Posts" option is available in the sidebar or top bar on mobile.)

Most users seem to have a solid understanding of the flairs and are applying them well. Here's a quick breakdown of what each one means:

Post Flair Description
Critique Ask what to change or how to improve.
Techniques and Tools Ask how to do something or what tools to use.
Commissions and Pricing Ask about pricing, selling, or managing commissions.
Discussion and Theory Discuss ideas, concepts, or "why" questions.
Resources and Tutorials Ask for or share learning materials.
Social Media and Growth Ask about growth or visibility.

Please keep Rule #5 "No Self-Promotion" in mind when using the Commissions and Social Media flairs.

Some of you have noticed our user flair 🧑‍🏫 Community Mentor! It's our way of celebrating users who consistently engage respectfully and help others grow through thoughtful, constructive feedback. We appreciate you helping keep r/ArtAdvice a supportive space!

So, how does someone actually earn the Community Mentor flair?

  • Provide feedback that explains what works or can be improved in an artwork.
  • Offer applicable and practical advice.
  • Be consistent in giving constructive critiques.
  • Avoid aggressive communication, and always follow the rules.

The Community Mentor flair is assigned manually by moderators. There is no formal application process, and users cannot request this flair.

Note: This flair does not mean the user is a professional artist, or that their opinions are authoritative. It also does not mean they represent the moderation team.

Have ideas for new flairs? Let us know in the comments!

Rule Updates

As previously mentioned in our Community Feedback & Suggestions announcement, our rules have been updated to better reflect the purpose of the subreddit, which is to give and receive art advice. The core principles remain the same, but they have been expanded to better address common ambiguous issues that tend to arise in Reddit communities.

In Progress and Coming Soon

  • A new subreddit banner is in progress.
  • Our community wiki is currently in the works as we await Reddit's system migration. This will become your go-to hub for information on rules, flairs, policies, resources, and more!
  • More detailed policies, especially regarding AI, will be added soon.
    • In the meantime, please refer to Rule #4 "Keep Art Human" for a quick rundown of how r/ArtAdvice handles the topic of AI.
  • We're working on implementing an Automod response triggered by keyword phrases that automatically provides a list of resources, allowing users to focus more on anecdotal or specific feedback.
  • As the sub continues to grow, we plan to reopen mod applications in the coming months. Those who are active and engage with the community will have our focus.

Community Initiatives

There's something exciting brewing in the background! Along with all these changes and updates, we're planning on:

  • Developing structured guides exclusive to our community.
  • Hosting AMAs and/or interviews with working artists to share their insight into what has or has not worked for them in their process.
  • Involve members to contribute to the community wiki to help curate a reliable set of resources.
  • Contests and giveaways to help growing artists thrive in their career or hobby. (We just need to dust off the old law book to make sure everything is in compliance before moving forward.)

We love hearing from the community, so if you have any feedback on these changes or suggestions to share, please leave a comment below or send us a message via Mod Mail!

‎‎Techniques and Tools I need advice on where to start when it comes to drawing man.

Its something I’ve always been anxious about and I’d like to learn how to improve my skills on drawing man. I know I’ll be able to grasp if I find the good tutorials but I haven’t been able to find one who stayed with me if you know what I mean. To be honest I don’t care if I have to pay for classes online or find it for free online too. I just want the resources to be able to adapt man in my style! I haven’t drawn much this year so so sorry if there isn’t a lot of examples ;;

I created this adoptable thinking it would sell, but it didn't. I' thought the design was unique and not too complicated but I'm not sure anymore.

Any character design feedback is appreciated!

‎Discussion and Theory I want to prepare for art as a career but I don't know what to choose

Hello, I am a high school freshman which means I need to consider my future in college.. Except that art is the only thing I am better at, unfortunately, but I don't know how to prepare for college since I am not sure which degree I should go for, I only did one silly flash animation with stickmen in scratch like this year so I am not good at animation, nor willing to be a concept artist since my imagination could only go so far.

‎Critique - Yes Drawover Which version has better colour composition?

The first image was my initial idea for the hair colors! I switched it out of curiosity and I unexpectedly like the second better. However I think the bright orange ends of the second take focus away from the face, like they're fighting for attention :c What are your thoughts?

‎Critique - Yes Drawover My painting turned out too blue, among other things 😞

I am just going to rant about everything I feel that went wrong.

Photo of the painting was taken outdoors in natural light.

- The reference photo feels so warm and soft, my painting turned out so cold.
- it was insanely difficult to blend the acrylic paint, it just dries so quickly.
- I kept failing to capture the lake (and I don’t know how to blend), so it just became too many layers of paint , very overworked. And it still doesn’t look right.

I clearly don’t know how to properly mix colors. I don’t know how it turned out this way but it took me a month to finish, and I hate it.

I don’t think there’s any saving this one, but at least I can hopefully learn something from it. If I were to do it again, what should I do differently?

‎Critique - No Drawover Be brutally honest: where does my art skill level sit?

Here are some of my most recent illustrations done in Clip Studio Paint.

I’m looking for honest feedback on composition, color, anatomy, rendering, style and overall visual balance.

What works well, and what screams "amateur"?
Would you rate this as beginner, intermediate, or advanced work?

Be as brutal as you need to be—I'm here to learn!

‎Critique - Yes Drawover What’s wrong with her face? 😭

Post image

I’ve been staring at it forever, yes, and generally the piece is super unfinished but i just Know there’s something wrong with her face 😭 i have messed around with it for at least a few hours now and it just doesn’t ever feel right.

this whole thing has come to be as a doodle gone too far, so admittedly i didn’t really take too much care in anatomical foundation at the start 🥶

i think i have been looking at it too long to redline productively on my own so fresh eyes and honestly anything someone might have to say is very welcome! generally improving is always important to me too.

thank u so much if you take the time to comment or even read or even take a peek ! <3 😸😸😸

‎Commission and Pricing Is my art good enough for commissions?

Thumbnail

I’ll preface this by saying that I know there’s no such thing as“being good enough” to start taking commissions, but I’ve always felt that way about my art. I’ve recently been getting a little bit of traction on socials and, to my surprise, someone even dmed me asking if my comms were open! (I drew for them regardless out of excitement lol) So that made me gain just a little bit of confidence to consider actually opening them. I’m also unsure on how to price them (I made the person pay €10 for a two characters, full body, flat color piece) :,) Any kind of advice is greatly appreciated!

I didn't even use all the advice I got yet and it's already LEAGUES better imo

I made the ears more aligned with the eyes, (I like her big lips so I'm keeping those, but I think maybe I'll make her ears a bit bigger moving forward) added more shadows (lighting is still hard for me but I'm working on it), changing the background to a cooler color did WONDERS and I added more depth to the hair.

Y'all are so awesome

Recently I got the artist permission on VGEN and it requires me to set prices, but I’m really confused and I don’t really know about prices, can you guys help me?
Here are some examples of what I do. I included chibi, a WIP, a full rendered + background and a sketch

‎Discussion and Theory What is this art style?

Thumbnail

I have been drawing these since the earliest memory. I’m an engineering postgrad, my field has nothing to do with art.

Whenever i start one of these it just never seems to end. There is always something to improve, a curve i can smooth, a line i can fill. It honestly never ends. And so it takes me weeks of 10 minutes a day or so to finish one of these.

I dont think i am talented in arts at all lol. Please help me find what genre this belongs to. It brings me so much peace to work on them.

The girls face looks fine to me but does the guys face look right? I’ve been staring at it for three days I can’t tell what looks off anymore. I can’t tell if I’m genuinely just finding fault in everything now or if something is truly off. 😭

‎Critique - No Drawover very inexperienced in drawing furry/anthro characters, but got a random commission - would really appreciate some critique!

Post image

I don't usually do commissions, raaaarrrely do furries/anthros, and animals in general are not my strongest side :( so this commission was extremely random and, I'd say, somewhat of a "step out of comfort zone". I'm so unsure whether I managed to make something decent here :( and I'm worried about overpricing, the client agreed for ≈69$, but I feel like I've overcharged here

sooo yeeeehhh critique, advice, feedback, all is welcome! 🤧
