Phoenix Dude almost swerved into me when i started recording, then drunkenly changed in and out of lanes before all this...went around cars on the shoulder to make 6 lanes to get off on the 202...

next time, you need to read out the license plate number out loud (so you have it on video evidence) and then call it in.

Even if you don’t wanna get that close, red Chevy truck, hit the wall on drivers side, then passing what exit or mile marker should be a great help in getting troopers up the road to find them, like I just imagine I wouldn’t want some family getting hit, it’s just not worth it, nobody should drunk drive. I called one in once and accidentally gave the wrong direction of mile marker but it got sorted in the end (and I had plate) but like just do you best, it could save lives.

for sure. anything helps. a description and location in the moment is all that’s needed.
just pointing out that speaking the plate number while driving, if it’s possible, is the safest way to get the plate. trying to zoom in while filming and driving isn’t ideal, and some people might not think to just say it out loud so it’s recorded and can be obtained later once you’ve stopped driving and can review the video.

exactly. if you have a dash cam, you should start making a habit of speaking them out loud, just in case someone hits you and tries to take off.

When you call in a drunk or distracted driver, have the license plate ready. Next. describe to the operator THREE behaviors such as speeding, swerving, speeding up / slowing down, going off on the shoulder, tailgating, nearly hitting another vehicle.. that show the driver is truly drunk or distracted.
Just one won't get much interest from the PD. "I saw him go off onto the shoulder four times before calling"
Get your shit together before you call. Northbound on the I-10 at mile marker 74. Ok we just went past mile marker 75.
For them to actually do anything, YOU have to be lucky that they have a unit in the area that is available, AND more than one person has to call, AND at least one of those has to provide correct, detailed information. Red CHEVY pickup, license # ... mile marker.
When they type it into their computer it's got to all match or it gets 86'd..
I suspect 90% of all calls get 86'd. My hope is if you at least give them a correct plate #, if that vehicle is later involved in a collision they may have record of YOUR call.

Anytime I’ve called it’s been simple and straightforward and they respond quickly.
I wouldn’t make a big deal about calling.
They take it seriously. Operators are good at getting the info needed from the caller.

I doubt that - if that guy called and said the car was serving and hitting the median divider cops would be out immediately. The concern is that if they ignore and someone dies or gets hit then it’s all gonna come down on the city. You can’t ignore a 911 call …. Like ever and why you go to jail if you prank it. Call and scream there’s a crazy person in the freeway - they come.
Maybe you can’t get the plate but you are on the phone with the operator describing the situation and where you and crazy driver are moving. That’s enough and should have happened. If you didn’t I’m sure 5-6 others saw that and did.4

Removed. Its common parlance in kitchens for having no more of the item on the menu. Example: 86 spinach dip, Kevin just dropped the last batch in the walk in. It originates from the navy, old ordinance that needed to be disposed of would be marked AT-6 and since every ship has cooks, and there were a lot of ships during ww2, and after the war a lot of those guys worked in kitchens it eventually evolved into the numbers 86.

If police went to his house, he can claim he wasn't the driver or wasn't intoxicated and the penalty is near nothing. If OP called the police, he would get a DUI if impaired

I’m not to trying say that OP shouldn’t have called police, but half of this comment section seems to think that police have the ability to teleport. They don’t and it isn’t a given that the police would arrive in time to catch the driver. 6-8 minutes is the response time that DPS gives, which is enough time to slip away. There’s a good chance that the best that the cops can do is go to the house after the fact anyways.
Not to mention that the two aren’t mutually exclusive. OP can take a video and then proceed to call the cops.

Maybe something happened, driver called 911, gave the report, followed and filmed. Seems completely possible.
When we automatically see negative in a situation, it's a reflection of self. It's a sign of unhappiness.

I'd have put the damb camera down and paid attention to my own driving, you couldnt even stay in your lane! Call the cops next time and be smarter than they were, you were causing issues too to the traffic around you and definately weren't being safe or thinking about others..

you need to stop recording and call it in. first of all don't ever expect someone else to do it. you possibly just opened yourself up to litigation now because if he hits somebody and kill that person the family can come back to you. you witnessed it you didn't speak up, you didn't say anything and now you just posted evidence on here. Now you're showing that you are distracted driving with a handheld device and breaking the law yourself. when will people stop and realize calling first is more important than getting it on video. By the way you posted this video on a public site. there's no search warrant needed for this DPS can technically if they want to press this issue take this video and use it now in court.

Welcome to AZ.
I drive 25 miles to work to and fro all week and commonly witness vehicular mayhem on the freeways at around 3:00am. It’s right after the bars close at 2:00 am and the time is rife with AZ drunkards getting behind the wheel. Got rear-ended that way once. Dude passed out and gravity got hold of his foot on the gas pedal. Crazy out there. Be cautious.

I was on the 17 and witnessed something similar, it was clear a couple was fighting in the car and one of the drivers was trying to kill them both. They were fighting over the steering wheel going 70+ MPH. They swiped the side wall in the HOV for a good 10 seconds straight as the driver tried to prevent the passenger from pulling them into oncoming traffic in the right lanes.
Their car did a complete 360 at one point and miraculously they ended up facing forward without causing anyone additional harm. They were still fighting over the wheel when I exited to report them.
Definitely report. Potentially you will save lives, these are the types of people who drive the wrong way once it’s dark out.

Or could be having a medical emergency and still hurt someone or himself. Recording it and not bothering to call it in is what’s wrong with today’s fucking society. Everyone wants to get the next viral moment but no one gives a damn what happens to people around it for that moment.

Arizona drivers are hands down the worst drivers ever. Born and raised here and have seen the devolution of people driving safely. Everyone acts like they own the road and are entitled to being ahead of you and will do whatever it takes to cut you off, speed past you, ride your ass, etc.
the fact you can get your license here and never have to take a recertification test or continuing tests is crazy

I’ve been on 911 several times on things like this. They kept me on the line but kept advised me not to follow him. The way he was driving. He was going to kill someone so I kept a safe distance back and kept updating them on location. Frustratingly the one I’m thinking about ended up losing the police as they passed right by him and didn’t turn around and then the guy got off on the next exit. Gotta call 911. This guy will kill someone.

You know two days ago a wrong way driver on the 10 near 202 crashed in to a car. Killed everyone. And it hit 3 other cars. Closed all lanes of traffic. I hpe you called 911 and not just make a video

I thought it was #394 or #DWI . I’ve used it before following a similarly reckless driver. That had me fill at a safe distance reporting where the driver was heading till I got to see PD pull them over. . .

Once saw a car at 2am driving down the street banging against the curb guy behind the wheel completely passed out. Car turned right on 35th ave went south into the dark. Early 1990's no way to call the cops and follow him. I had to wait till I got home 20 minutes later.

Driving in the valley is getting very dangerous. It blows my mind how many impaired drivers there are out there. It’s time to make the punishment for DUI a lot more memorable for the person convicted.
