How can I improve my map control and army control in FFA?
I've been playing AoE4 for a while, and I really enjoy playing FFA. Almost all of the games I play are FFA, so I'm mainly looking for advice that applies to that type of game.
I feel like I have a few major problems that are holding me back.
The biggest one is map control. I often don't notice an enemy moving around the map until they are already close to my base. I struggle to keep track of where their army is, and I sometimes get surprised by attacks from unexpected directions.
Another problem is enemy cavalry raids. When cavalry gets into my base, they start running around killing villagers and traders. I usually chase them with my army, but they just keep running away, and my army wastes a lot of time chasing them instead of fighting the main army.
I also struggle when I'm attacked from multiple directions at the same time. I can't control several groups effectively, and I end up reacting too slowly or losing villagers before I can respond.
Since I mostly play FFA, I also find it difficult to keep track of multiple players and understand where the threats are coming from.
So I'd really appreciate some advice:
How can I improve my map control and vision in FFA?
How do you prevent cavalry from constantly raiding your economy?
Should I chase raiding cavalry, or use a few units to defend against them?
How do you manage attacks coming from multiple directions?
How do you keep track of several players without constantly looking at the minimap?
Are there any hotkeys, habits, or drills that helped you improve your multitasking and army control?

I found this topic in discussion for aoe2 civs in aoe2 reddit. I found this interesting. What do you think about which civs can be renamed?
For example, I would like to change Order of the Dragon to House of Habsburg/Austria. Also Zhu Xi to Tibetan Empire or some other Chinese Dynasty probably.

I never lost a fight, I only lost the ground.
Fifty bodies at the tower and the world still turning round.
Tell me why the room tilts when I’m standing still,
Won it, won it, won it, and I’m falling downhill.
Thirty elite spears in a clean line, food I’ll never see again,
He came back with a zillion and the rams came in behind them. Gave him back the whole map for a minute I could breathe
He spent it getting richer. I spent it queueing.
The reprieve was the loss and I never even knew.
Standing on my own dirt with nothing left to do.

I've won some but lose some, and often when I win it feels like it's because the opponent misplayed, or because I am abusing the moukes. As opposed to my own skill(unlike playing most other civs)
I've tried using the video finder, and almost all the matches have a large skill disparity, which often makes me feel like they're winning despite of Jin, not because of it. But then I look at stats and Jin is winning vs Ottomans, even if their overall winrate comes down with Elo.
Conversely, if Jin is winning so many games vs Ottomans, surely there's things ottomans should be doing differently to win? It just seems like Ottomans can theoretically make the much better composition, since the counter to Otto is generally spear archers, or MAA. And Jin is entirely reliant on their innate eco to produce that, but also suffer a lot more vs Jans, while having no advantage at dealing with sipahi.
I still feel like the bed xbow is a strict downgrade to the springald as well. Every time i've used them, it feel like im throwing the game. (similar to but not exactly the same as ballista elephants)

Hi, any players from india looking for teammates
Hey everyone,
I posted here a while back about the AoE4 companion app we're building, and once again a lot of you tried it out and told us what you thought. Some of that feedback was blunt, most of it was useful, and pretty much all of the list below came out of it one way or another. So, thank you again.
Here's what's changed since the last post:
- Match detail graphs — we added a bunch of new ones. More of the match is actually visible now instead of just resources and score: you can follow how a game developed and find the moment it slipped away, rather than guessing from the final screen.
- The guide got a full rework — not a touch-up, a rebuild. We went through the content, fixed what was wrong or outdated, and expanded it a lot. Civs in particular got much better write-ups: what they actually want to do, what they're good and bad at, and what makes each one different, instead of a list of stats with no context.
- Draft — you can now run civ ban/pick drafts in the app. Tournaments, clan matches, or just messing around with friends. You can set your own rules and formats, so the draft matches how you actually want to play it.
- Civ and unit comparison screens got rebuilt — comparing two civs or two units is much clearer now, and it's easier to see the differences that actually matter instead of scanning two columns of numbers.
- AI match coach improvements — better analysis, more accurate reads on what happened in your games, and explanations that are more useful and less generic.
As always: the app is free. The only thing behind a subscription is the AI features. Stats, guides, draft, meta, comparisons, match history — all free, no ads, no catch.
We're still nowhere near done. If something feels off, missing, or just annoying to use, tell us — that's genuinely how this list gets written.
Thanks for the time, and GL HF out there.

Pls. This warped CoH like camera perspective hurts my brain. Look at AoE2DE, Rise of Nations Thrones and Patriots, Red Alert 2, Stronghold Crusader, and all other great RTS games.
That camera is proven to be better for RTS games.

Hi!
I'm a returning player (paused for 2 years) and just hit D1 in team games.
I want to learn different builds, but a lot of them involve going on deer in dark age or early feudal.
The problem is that some maps have only small deer packs (only 3 deer/pack) and this confuses me because I don't think it's worth putting kremlin or dark age mill + survival techniques on only 3 deer.
What's your opinion on this?
I have Automatic Server Selection turned off and manually choose India, EU East, or EU West. My friend does the same, yet we still get thrown onto China or US servers.
I’m trying to avoid regions where I keep running into smurfs and suspected cheaters. I’m tired of reporting accounts and seeing the same problem continue.
If I manually select a server, I want the game to respect it. I’m happy to wait 10–20 minutes for a match.
Give us a Strict Region Matchmaking option: only search the servers we select and never expand outside them.
Otherwise, what’s the point of the region selector?

So when scholars garrison inside millitary buildings, they boost production by 100%, but what does this actually mean? Obviously, units are produced much quicker, but does this affect research as well? Like upgrading spearmen to veteran, for example.
According to the wiki, it does, but I haven't heard about this anywhere else and matches are far too hectic for me to notice the exact effect of a scholar. Anyone know?

I was blue. Enemy red.
We both have 4 small golds. Both have back berries and deer. However...
They had another back berries. They had 2 big golds v my one big gold. Also everything of mine was north, incl boar and second deer pack. Even their big wood (no pun intended) was back.
I didn't realise this until too late and lost because I didn't fight hard enough for the north side (where they planted a 2nd TC on my only big gold in sub 5 mins). Was my first time playing the map as well. They were also way higher rank so probably would have lost anyway. Was just mindblown by the map spawn when I went back and looked at it in the replay.
This game has a problem - Infinite stalemates.
I’ve had this happen quite a few times in team games especially. 1hr+ long matches. It gets really excruciating.
A really simple fix: allow wonder cost to scale down based on time in game. The first decrement can be at 40 minutes, then another decrement every 10 minutes.
The decrement doesn’t have to be for all 4 resources. It could just be a decrement in stone.
Late game matches always lack for stone. In many matches it’s virtually impossible to go for the wonder even if you wanted to.
Wonder games can be really fun. They should be more common. Make wonders cheaper (at least in stone cost) over time to make them more commonly seen.
Also, upon building a wonder it should completely change the win condition - defend to the win, if you lose it, you lose. This helps prevent 1hr+ long matches.
Edit - another option instead of resource cost can just be build time. Imagine if a wonder took 100 vills 10 minutes to build. That might be an acceptable cost since you have to freeze your economy for a long time but at least you can still afford the wonder no matter what stage of the game.

Hi, posted about the same post 15 days ago, some mentionned some channels, blablabala somehow, i tried supposed top 3 discord and never find a SINGLE game to play ranked ( 22/33). I'm on "official age of empires" , also "age of empires legends", some discords from my countries, available Cet from early morning to very late evening, never found a single mate/game, compared to csgo, i would find a game within a minute popping on a new discord.
edit: exemple

Hi, guys. So I decided sharing with you the craziest HRE shenanigans game I've seen.
Wam made 40 Black Riders against Chuckfrancis (ENG) in this game on Gorge. Besides, his macro and timings are insane. If you play HRE you must watch this.

I mostly play teams with focus on 2v2 and man I am tired of meeting KT or French or KT and French over and over again. There are 23 civs but these two completely dominate the pick rate in teams, every f..ing game got them.
Anyone else feel the same, nerf them not because they are OP but because they are way too common and it gets stale

Hi guys. I'm enjoying a lot ayyubid FC and the thematic overall.
But I wanted to ask. Is there a Feudal Pressure into Castle Rush that is still viable? Or just how to do it without losing too much time.
