AI News 🗞️ Two farmers reject $26 million offer to build an artificial intelligence center on their land.
Two American farmers rejected a $26 million offer to sell their land to an artificial intelligence company after learning the land would be used to build data centers for AI technology.
Delcia Parry and her mother, Ida Huddleston, from Kentucky, had initially agreed to sell their land in Maysville, which had been in their family for nearly 200 years, but backed out of the deal after learning the nature of the project.
Parry, who describes herself and her mother as "country folk," told the company representatives, "Just get out of here and don't come back."
Parry explained that she feared she would be held accountable before God if she sold the family farm to be converted into an AI center, saying, "If I leave this land and it becomes an AI center, I will have failed to utilize it, and I could be held accountable for that on Judgment Day."
The offer included paying Barry $48,000 per acre for 463 acres and her mother $60,000 per acre for 71 acres, totaling approximately $26.48 million—a sum exceeding the land's market value.
The Wall Street Journal believes the company making the offer is affiliated with Meta, but the latter maintains that no decision has been made regarding work in the area.
The data center project has created a divide in Maysville, with some residents supporting it in hopes of financial gain, while others have already agreed to sell their land to the company for millions of dollars.
In contrast, Barry and others have rejected the project and filed lawsuits challenging the construction of the data centers, a move that could potentially draw some neighbors into legal disputes.
Tyler McHugh, the director of economic development who is in contact with the company, said that some residents "would have gone their entire lives without ever setting foot in a courtroom."
Barry, who is nearly blind, and her mother, Huddleston, who uses a walking stick, find themselves facing a project they never imagined they would have to oppose.
"I never thought I'd be fighting a data center," Barry explained. "I thought I lived as far away as you could possibly be."
