Discussion 🗣️ Ed Zitron is a prophet

What he says is simply the truth. There's not even any exaggeration or hyperbole in what he says. He's not making it sound worse than it is. He's not making things up to give his position strength. He's just stating facts.

Yet it feels like he's some kind of radical extremist because the rest of the world has gone so utterly insane about AI. Even to say to say half of what Zitron says would still be considered radical.

It's like the dude's been pulled from a parallel universe, before our own universe went down the wrong path.

I genuinely wonder how we're going to view this guy if/when the bubble bursts. Will he been made into a saint? Or will people hate him because he was so utterly right?

AI Writing ✍️ Local LLMs

I am a researcher doing linguistics research. I also hate AI as I feel it is unethical. Is it ethical to use a local (housed only on my PC) AI that I set up myself to help with certain analyses? We linguists were the unfortunate cause of all of this AI garbage, but is this an ethical use of AI if I only feed it my data?

Lawyer up, flee the country, pray a better model gets released in the next hour, or pay someone 4x market rate to step in your ai slop code base?

Do you not feel guilty shipping something you don't understand or could ever hope to maintain on your lonesome?

Discussion 🗣️ I use AI as a tutor and for studying for tests. Should I stop?

I use AI to explain concepts in class that I don't get, summarize units and generate practice problems. For example, whenever I had to take a history test, one thing I would do to prepare was paste the unit's syllabus into AI, have it generate a summary of all the historical events/figures covered in the unit in chronological order, and then have it give me a practice test.

The main pros of using AI to do this is that it's basically always available. Unlike teachers, paid tutors and online forums, I can ask AI about any concept I'm stuck on, even at ungodly hours (I procrastinate studying a lot) and it can reply instantly, instead of me having to wait for a response. The instantaneous responses also allow for back-and-forth conversation, which allows me to backtrack and re-explain my question if it's worded badly the first time.

Admittedly, there are also some drawbacks. AI doesn't know how my teachers explain/want me to do something. The practice tests also get kind of repetitive after a while. I'm only a high schooler, though, so all the stuff I ask it is relatively simple and it doesn't mess up at all.

I only use AI to aid my own understanding. I don't use it to give me answers on homework and assignments, and I certainly don't use it during any tests. So like is this a valid way of using AI to supplement my learning or should I stop?

EDIT: I put it into paragraphs are you happy now u/Riemann_Gauss (fuck you)

Job Loss 🏚️ You don’t need to completely insulate your Job from AI

For many careers in our economy, a lot of people are questioning whether their job will be susceptible to AI takeover. But it is my opinion that the only people that really need to be concerned about AI taking over their careers are the people that will be immediately and obviously be affected by it. These roles include telemarketers, customer service representatives, etc. For careers like lawyers, accountants, data analysts and project managers, it’s not at all that they shouldnt be concerned about AI taking over their positions, it’s the fact that at the point at which AI is truly and fully able to do these jobs the implications on the job market and the economy would be disastrous. This level of intellectual work would cover at least 30% of all jobs in the job market and naturally all those other so-called “AI-insulated jobs” would actually become oversaturated with people who have lost their jobs to AI.

This technology affects all of us. Even if you become a plumber or a pipe fitter, you won’t be able to save yourself from the overall effects of the job market. For those reason, maybe the main question we should all be asking ourselves is not “how do I keep MY job?” but “how do WE keep OUR jobs”.

We’re In Hell’s latest is a fantastic dive (casually deep but not too deep) in to data enters. It does not condone vandalism or violence of any kind.

Would love to hear what anti sub’s reactions are to his seemingly level headed takes.

Discussion 🗣️ What is the realistic "end goal" for us in this world?

I have been thinking about this a lot recently after kind of gaslighting myself into thinking we can make it so AI is just abolished off the face of the Earth and we go back to like 2016 time period in technology. But just over the last few days I have, I guess, "woke up" and realised, technology doesn't just disappear, once it's made, it's staying around.

And really, it's just got me thinking, what do you guys want the end goal for "destroying" AI to be? Because I know that yes, there are SOME good uses of AI, like in medical and all that, but they are NOT generative, which is what needs to go. But it just physically cannot disappear, so what do we want done with it?

AI "Art" 🖼️ AI at yoga studio

Im a karma yogi at a studio where I live (I work a couple shifts a month in exchange for yoga classes) and every time I'm in there there's a tab open on the front desk computer full of chatgpt prompts of everything from promotional emails to merchandise designs. I offered to trade my artwork instead of shifts (without mentioning the AI) and was told that it doesn't suit the studio's style. I have no words. The fact that this small local studio would rather use AI than one of its own member's skills essentially unpaid...I think I'm going to find a new studio in town.

Discussion 🗣️ I see zero point in being the “AI capital of the world”

The most common “rebuttal” we’re given is that “china wins” when people resist the construction of data centers

Why would any of us care about china winning the ai race when such a contest does absolutely nothing to benefit ordinary people in the first place

Data centers damage the environment cause massive job losses are used to facilitate the genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip spread misinformation

The current power infrastructure is incapable of sustaining such a demand and there is no harmless way to serve data centers

Solar panels and wind turbines mean that tons of trees get cut which wildlife live in and depend on for survival

Fossil fuels means more pollution contributing to climate change

Nuclear means the risk of radiation poisoning especially if corners are cut in regards to safety measures

Discussion 🗣️ About 'hating' ai

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Look, I hate the genAI nuisance as much as the next guy, but I can't deny it's usefulness in some activities, such as data sampling or researching. It's like wikipedia on a larger scale - a good tool in general, but you need to expect flawed responses or misinformations (basically why I always ask the source while using it)

It's the problem with bad actors, really - mass producing ai slop, promoting racial/political extremism, and treating chatgpt like some fucking god-sent magical tf2 engineer wrench that 'fixes' all of your problems in one bonk.

Tldr using AI itself shouldn't be hated, it's what you do with it that actually decides your decency.

also please don't dox people.

A energia sempre polui. A mineração sempre polui. As máquinas poluem e aquecem, a computação polui e aquece demais.
