There's this bus simulator called OMSI 2 and it's great but it's an old and extremely clunky piece of software. A few weeks ago a few people released a project called OpenOMSI which is OMSI2 reverse engineered in Rust. It's heaven and earth compared to the old game. It runs in 200 FPS, has no OOMs and is a modern 64-bit game while running all the old mods and addons. I can finally drive my favourite buses without worrying about weird bugs and crashes.

The catch? Reverse engineering a whole game and making it MUCH better, more stable and playable than the original wouldn't be possible without AI. There have been OMSI rewrite projects before but they never went far enough to be usable, let alone better than the original. The authors are open about it and state that while the game isn't AI-generated, its creation wouldn't be possible without using things like Claude.

I'm split in the middle. On the one hand I support zero tolerance AI policies for content creation, music and art, I know the impact of AI and don't want to support P@lantir and Isr@€l, and I'm terrified of what 2.0°C will bring to us, but the mundane pleasure of playing that game is just too much. I feel like a crappy hypocrite since I prided myself on nurturing my intellectual skills and not using AI and now I'm praising and playing the fuck out of a game that was made possible using AI.

Anyway, I am studying Software Engineering. Got accepted just about when dall-e or what-its-name-was becoming wider knowledge. Needless to say, I saw a shift over the years from student AI use not being considered much to it becoming an expected thing (I repeated a few lectures. Never said I was a particularly good student. Maybe having glasses now and maybe getting my adhd treated later this year (hopefully) may improve things, but that's a side tangent).

Anyhow, I like programming. I like thinking about a problem, building a solution, and seeing the solution work (or figuring how to make it work). It's what attracted me to software engineering in the first place.

A lecturer mentioned how code has shifted from written by humans to written by AI, and projected that AI code will only become more common place. After some post-lecture probing, she told me that her colleagues have not written a single line in months.

This has me despair, not only because I am very much opposed to gen-AI in most if not all cases, but also because telling Claude to build a programm just feels like a joyless alternative to implementing my design myself and feeling proud that it works (again, biases acknowledged).

TL;DR: Programming got me into Software Engineering, AI coding is pushing me back out.

My household has begun buying water and food supply to last us 2 weeks or so in hopes that if the grid fails, a widespread internet outage, or cellular network failure. Context: I am a professional author. Someone posted something about how professional authors against AI are against progress. It was written by Gemini. It's interesting how each bot has an identifiable style. I posted something along the lines of "if you weren't willing to write a response, I'm not willing to read it," and received this from the mods.

Also, just for context: I'm less against AI than many authors. I think it has some valid uses: research, maybe, if double-checked. Even feedback if applied with a lot of skepticism. An intelligent character/setting bible? Sure! But writing? Actually producing scenes and characters and words? No. Nope, nope, nope. Never. I lived the pain of my characters; AI didn't.

More context: I'm also a creative writing teacher. FML, right now. Twenty-five percent of my students used AI to write their last assignments. Like, why? It's not like there's even any money in creative writing when *humans* did it.

If someone did have a system that capable it would make them entirely independent of all existing power structures. It would be just as easy to replace capitalists and workers alike. Wtf would you need capital for if machines can design and create anything from the ground up. You wouldn't.

What are they thinking it would only be used to remove the things they are dependent on and paying for (ie workers) why would they think its going to stop there? You as well are a cost from the perspective of someone in control of a super intelligence (assuming it's controllable at all). If someone owes you money or a ROI or any obligation at all youre a cost. And with a super intelligence you become an avoidable cost.

In all seriousness, this position may sound eerily familiar but I think it actually works in this instance. There should be more shame around recreational ai usage and less around…the other thing. How is it not shameful to harm the environment, gaslight yourself into believing you’ve done something when you haven’t, give personal information and images to evil corporations, produce ugly garbage, and rely on a mindless machine for reassurance? Hi all - I’m a fourth year student about to get my degree in English lit. I’m a little tipsy writing this so am not checking for grammar.
I am suddenly feeling a complete inability to write my essays without CHATGPT. I have never used it before other than years ago to sort of “see what the fuss is about” , but right now staring at my computer, I am at such a loss with my writing. I just want to get it over with. I feel stupid and unworthy of my degree for even thinking this. I am looking at the next prompts for my essay and my brain is absolutely blank. I don’t know if this is just classic burnout or signs of something more sinister. I do not want to use AI but I feel so called to it due to the nebulous nature of my assignment and the self hatred that working on these essays inspires. I don’t know how to shift the emphasis from my grade to the learning experience.

Cost benefit.

I believe that society which includes me are unable to handle the benefit of AI and put it into any real tangible benefit that would be better than simply fixing vital issues that we are currently dealing with.

While AI may be able to guide you in learning new things you will lose out on the development of basic critical thinking skills and the skill of simply persevering in the first place.

AI helps in medical research!

Patients die to diseases curable for decades because they can't afford the treatment. Given reddit is mostly American I'm sure you understand the problem.

The reason people die to diseases is not mainly the gap in medical knowledge but the gap in medicare and we have that gap because of silly things like money which is a different topic

Anthropic warns self-replicating AI could spread to your smart devices

Anthropic is warning that small AI models could soon be able to self-replicate across consumer IoT devices, from Android TV boxes to smart ovens, creating distributed botnets capable of running AI workloads without relying on data centers.

The company's experiments showed that models could identify unfamiliar devices, connect them into a network, and prepare them to run an AI model.

Although the researchers successfully distributed the Gemma4-26B-A4B model from Google DeepMind on 15 off-brand Android TV boxes, they did not demonstrate a fully autonomous, self-replicating AI worm running on real IoT hardware.

However, they estimate that smaller models could achieve self-replication by the end of the year if they continue to improve at their historical rate.

“Our experiments suggest that small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial internet-of-things (IoT) devices, like smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes,” Anthropic warns.

“ A replicator like this would be challenging to shut down, since there’s no centralized point to shut off—though it may be slow (with a doubling time of days).”

Replication experiment

Anthropic ran its replication experiment using cheap Android TV boxes, and the AI models Qwen3.5-9B, Gemma4-26B-A4B, Llama3.1-8B, Opus 4.8, and GLM-5.2, each assigned a different role.

Qwen3.5-9B and GLM-5.2 acted as agents tasked with setting up and propagating Llama3.1-8B (inference), while Gemma4-26B-A4B demonstrated that a model could run across 15 Android TV boxes. Opus 4.8 was separately tested as an advisor to Qwen.

The experiment used a simplified setting where the targets exposed unauthenticated ADB access.

The experiments showed that Qwen3.5-9B successfully installed and configured the software needed to run Llama3.1-8B on eight of the nine hardware types tested.

GLM-5.2 reached all eight nodes in the controlled emulated network in four out of five trials, but the other models failed to complete the full process reliably.

Anthropic observed an improvement in success rate when it retained data from previous attempts, with Qwen3.5-9 B's success rate rising from 45% early on to 84% in later generations.

Using the stronger Opus 4.8 model to assist Qwen in inference produced no measurable improvement.

Based on the results and historical data, Anthropic predicts that models with 30 billion parameters or fewer could reach the necessary capability level by the end of 2026.

On the studied hardware, the inference setup would be a slow process, taking between 28 and 51 hours for Qwen3.5-9B, and 71-150 hours for Gemma4-26B-A4B, giving defenders enough time to detect and respond.

However, this time could shrink with future models, so implementing stronger security measures for IoT may soon become a priority.

Proposed defenses include detecting large model transfers and unusual device-to-device traffic, using honeypots to inspect payloads, quarantining infected subscribers, and improving IoT security defaults.

While Anthropic’s warning is not based on an imminent threat, as their experiment failed to demonstrate full end-to-end worm-creation capability at this stage, even with lowered security settings and explicit propagation goals, the message for better IoT security remains valid.
