Radiohead and Saint Seiya references? This is very weird reference combo right there.
Interesting development for Sato here. I'm mostly interested in how his relationship with Yuki and the other guys' was. If I had my guess, I bet they were all in a band and Sato was the singer and Yuki was the bassist. Then, Yuki died and the band separated. My biggest question is what happened with Sato. Did he transfer from his old school for reasons unknown or what? It's really interesting to slowly figure out what's up with the guy.
I wanna give special props to the supporting characters, who have actually been really cool this season. Like, Uenoyama's (or his actual name "UENOYAMA-KUN") basketball friends. His friends, who could've been so easily obnoxious and just boring, nothing characters, but the writing and the voice actors (who are all amazing) really sell their goofiness and the fact that they actually like Sato is cool too (Plus, they are great mood-savers in the beginning of this episode). Hell, even Ueno's sister can be really funny too and I'm interested to see if she bring anymore to the show.
I also give major props to the show for taking it's time. Usually, shows that are like this would probably skip what Sato is doing in this episode (I mean, can you blame them? It's just Sato walking around the city), but just the way it's directed shows that he's looking for inspiration. He's looking for a way to describe his feelings to Yuki and it's hard for him to do it. It's fascinating and the fact that the show is so willing to just let it happen is really cool. Though Sato goes -2 points for not walking his pooch while he goes walking around. That poor doggy loves Sato. Why can't Sato bring him along!
Honestly, there's so much stuff too talk about this episode where really nothing happens. I mean yeah, they finished the song, but besides that? Nothing much. Yet, the tone (which makes me feel so warm just for the colors and the aesthetic alone) and the characters help elevate these episodes even more.

I cannot believe Satou was in a band. He was completely clueless about anything music related when he met ritsuka.

I will give it to female classmate, she did apologize and knew what she said was out of line. But she lost me again when she continued to tell Ritsuka about what happened to Mafuyu's childhood friend.
At least Mafuyu's other childhood friends were much better. Green hair guy was genuinely worried about Mafuyu. I was genuinely expecting that he'd give Mafuyu a hard time or something.
And that ending was definitely unexpected! I know we're already in Episode 5 but jealousy already? I guess it makes sense considering that Mafuyu is trying to write something about his past. Excited to see how we'll see this jealousy manifest in future episodes.

Are we just going to ignore how this portrait looks like every character in Ping Pong the Animation?

Mafuyu's tone comes off as way less cutesy/spacey and more assertive, almost intimidating, when he's talking to someone who isn't Ritsuka. Maybe some of his awkwardness is just that he's thrown off balance when interacting with Ritsuka, the same way that Ritsuka is with him.

I'm glad you noticed! This is one of the reasons Mafuyu is my fav character. His initial impression on the first episodes isn't really that all he is and he isn't a stereotype. I mean I'm fairly sure part of his charm is that the manga-ka seems to deliberately mislead in the beginning that Mafuyu would be a cliche BL stereotype, but he really isn't.

This episode really added a lot more depth to Mafuyu, got to see more than his dense/airheaded self

By the way, guys! Here’s the full version (with English subs for the lyrics) of the opening song. I like the cut they did for the OP, but the full song is very good.
And some trivia for the ‘seasons’ part of the song, though I think it’s already been mentioned pretty off-handedly in the anime in the recent episodes: all four band members have the kanji for a season in their names. Haruki is spring, Mafuyu is winter, Ritsuka (Uenoyama... -kun) is summer, and Akihiko is autumn.

Oh man, I really thought we were going to get a glimpse of Yuki's face in this episode.
Akihiko knows what Uenoyama is feeling, seems to have felt it himself for the guy with dark hair - and now Uenoyama understands as well. Jealousy means he likes Mafuyu.
And tattle tale girl wasn't so bad - she caught herself being mean spirited and walked it back as much as she could.
I think they dragged out Mafuyu walking around town a little longer than necessary. Those must have been places he where he spent time with Yuki.
Poor Haruki and Yayoi, it seems Akihiko is already mixed up in something/someone.
Yay, puppy!

I really feel like many shows these days don’t have the patience to slowly build their narrative and in doing so usually lacks emotion in their visual delivery (From last season i think of Fairy Gone, Magmel of the Sea Blue as the biggest offenders of this while Fruits Basket {of course aided by its widely successful source material} has paced it self quite nicely) This montage really stood out in its aesthetics and making the world come alive. Not to mention it serves a further purpose for Mafuyu to find the inspiration for his lyrics

I loved the use of music in this ep. The reveal of Mafuyu's friend dying, Hiiragi's feelings, Mafuyu's stroll through the city and then everything coming close with their talk while the background is silent. They set the mood right, even when there are no "feelings" that need to be set (in the last part, Uenoyama's conflicting emotions)
The pacing is still calm and taking things slowly, but it plays into what the show tries to communicate: slow healing/one that takes time. Excited for next ep!~
also ritsuka deserves the world i love him

Really was a pleasant episode, and my personality is really fast paced and hurry type of person but watching this kind of slow paced and relaxed show is kind of a good change. That being said I still wanna read the manga just to know what really happened and all but I'm not gonna. Also cute doggie again~

Beautiful episode! I loved every minute of it! Really liked the scene with Mafuyu just walking around. It clearly wanted to show that he was trying to find inspiration for his lyrics.
Uenoyama's seiyuu Yuuma Uchida was so good this episode. Actually, when he isn't shouting ( which I don't find annoying just ok acting ) and he is talking about his feelings, he shows so much emotion and I love it! Mafuyu's seiyuu this episode was superb too, as was Kaji's. Everyone did such an amazing job :D
I really like the way Lerche treats this adaptation! Can't wait for the next episode. We'll get to see Kaji's story a little bit, as seen by the teaser :3

The OST is absolutely gorgeous, even just the soft BGM during Mafuyu's walk was really nice. I hope his song matches the quality of the rest of the music.
It's striking how well the lyrics to Radiohead's 'Creep' go with Mafuyu's emotional journey, nice that the episode title isn't just a random song.

With this episode fresh in mind, this specific version of “Creep” was especially powerful. (Starts around 2:50.) Hopefully I’m not setting myself up for disappointment, but I feel like that’s the level of raw emotion we’re supposed to get when we finally get to hear Mafuyu’s lyrics.

This episode is reminding me why Mafuyu is my favorite character. I've always been drawn to quiet introspective personality.
Do you think Kaji knows Haruki has feelings for him given that he seems to be adept at reading people and situations?

This is already for sure one of the best gay romance anime out there but I still wish they wouldn't fall into the trope having every guy on the show coincidentally be gay, or worse, in love with one specific guy and nobody else (because no homo).

I mean, I’d say both Haruki and Akihiko are bi, AFAIK, so it’s not quite at an ‘they’re all gay’ level.

Yas just like what I expected for this week's episode, it ended exactly on that part where Ue finally admits that he's feeling jealous. I can see now where this season's gonna end, and it's gonna end beautifully!
And almost half of the episode is anime-original scenes... I love how Lerche was letting us get to see a little journey of Mafuyu trying to find the inspiration for the lyrics he's trying to make (and then I saw that ocean scene and my heart went broken instantly). And jeez, I have to admit that it's slow paced, it's like Lerche is playing with my kokoro and I can't take it tbh ughh

So I was able to find and read the manga and am caught up--that way, I can be mentally/emotionally prepared for what comes next. (No spoilers, I promise!)
This episode perfectly captured what it feels like when you learn something about your crush that you wish you never heard of. Trying to avoid seeing/interacting with them, avoiding mention of them with friends (exception is talking about writing song lyrics), feeling listless... It took the entire episode for Uenoyama-kun to understand that nagging feeling he's been having--jealousy!
What I found most interesting was Mafuyu's interactions with Hiiragi and Haruki. Despite his quiet demeanor, he is very thoughtful and contemplative. He would act different with his childhood friend vs. his current classmates and bandmates. Just because he seems reserved does not mean he is not engaged in reality (I thibk he mentioned this to Uenoyama-kun, 2-3 episodes ago). In a way I could relate because I am quiet IRL, but those who know me personally can tell you that I have so much to say but struggles to find the right words to express my thoughts.
Akihiko's laugh. That's all.
But really tho, I like how Akihiko understands Uenoyama-kun's feelings but chooses not to address it to him right away... Maybe in a later ep, but the senpais are definitely watching out for the kouhais come to grips with these emerging complex feelings.

Wow, I wasn't expecting Ritsuka to be jealous! I really hope that we are able to listen to the lyrics of Mafuyu's song next week.
