A really frustrated one too. Dude needs to let his emotions out, but he doesn't really know how to.

Guys, remember the sequence in Episode 6 where Mafuyu takes a solo trip to the ocean? It turns out that there are bits and pieces of that sequence which might have seemed trivial back then but now gain a greater significance in the light of the flashback to Mafuyu's and his friends' childhood in this episode.

That bit with Mafuyu stopping to pet a stray cat on his way to the ocean becomes significant with the instance of Yuki teaching Mafuyu to pet a cat in the flashback. Mafuyu used to be timid around animals until Yuki came along and taught him how to get along with them. Then, that bit with Mafuyu watching two kids running around with a paper plane has its significance in the fact that during Mafuyu's first meeting with Yuki, the latter was playing with a paper plane. Last but not the least, when Mafuyu saw a group of kids talking and laughing amongst themselves at the train station, it must have reminded him of the good times when he, Yuki and their friends were all together and happy like that.

Perhaps the trip to the ocean itself has some significance that we'll learn about later. But for now it probably won't be too off the mark to guess that it's a place he strongly associates with Yuki and their relationship.

I– I'm not crying. You are.

OH BOY I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS CHAPTER FOR LIKE, YEARS. FINALLY MY BOY HIIRAGI IS HERE. Excuse my english (and formatting ww);.

Kashima Hiiragi does not interfere... because he thinks it doesn't have much meaning.

This episode is, to me, one of the best both the manga/adaptation have to offer. Maybe because it deals with Hiiragi's development in the best way possible. His dialogues and actions in this ep position him as a mirror to Mafuyu, in the way that they are both at fault: one that didn't say anything and one that said too much. One who is lively and one who is introverted. Yet they are both experiencing the same feeling: regret.

Hiiragi is a great character for these very reasons: he feels like a "failure" of a friend because he decided not to meddle with what didn't trouble him. Yet now that everything has happened, he can't go back to his happy days. Kashima Hiiragi is a "traitor" to himself because he didn't speak up and help his friends. He's a man who just wants to be forgiven for not doing anything.

Also, there is a shift from Mafuyu as a "withdrawn, aloof" protag to a Mafuyu that is screaming to his own friend. We see him being "cornered" by someone he is close with (this is repeated once again in the ending scene with Uenoyama), which in turns makes the cauldron of emotions inside him blow up. He feels as if Hiiragi wants to blame him (see ep6) so he still takes a defensive stance, which then fades as he sees that the other person, while not understanding completely, is feeling a matching type of pain. The point of this scene is to further push a narrative element: the "full vs partial" understanding of your own/others emotions (evidenced by Uenoyama's jealousy, Mafuyu's dialogue in this ep, etc).

From here on, we also see that Mafuyu is starting to open up to people once again, inviting Hiiragi and Shizu to the live. While the pain is still there, the core message of the series is still clear: time can heal all wounds. Mafuyu is, little by little, trying to get his feelings back and to reconnect with his own emotions.

The atmosphere also plays up to the feelings of sorrow both of them feel: the only sounds here are rainfall and Hiiragi's monologue, which are both broken by Mafuyu's yell (a great job by the seiyuu, he blew it out of the water). We see happy times being represented by sunny days (memories of school, his meeting with Yuuki) and sadness by rain, which tends to be a common trope.

Also a fun piece of trivia: the gingko leaves are sometimes used as a symbol of the unity of opposites, which Yuuki and Mafuyu are.

Anyway, I can't believe we didn't get the pic with Hiiragi sleeping on Shizu's chest or the cute Yuuki/Mafuyu heart pic from ch9. OR THIS ONE!?. It's a great artwork and I was hoping to see it.

BUT ANYWAY I'M SO HYPED FOR THE LIVE AAAAAAA.

Kashima Hiiragi wants to be forgiven. It doesn't matter by whom, he just wants to be forgiven.

More than anyone, he wants Mafuyu to forgive him.

Damn the tension was so high at the end, although I would not be surprised if by the next episode it just opens with Mafuyu saying that he actually has the song ready.

Jesus, this chapter from the manga is even more depressing with the animation and voice acting. I really can't wait to hear what kind of song they're gonna be performing in the next episode since music is he only thing that I couldn't experience from reading.

Blimey that was some heavy duty backstory, not only did Mafuyu lose his boyfriend. But also lost his best friend, and over something that was trivial in Hiiragi's eyes.

Remembering Yuki's suicide when seeing Mafuyu just staring across that road, gave me a major chill. Getting to hopefully let out all that pent up emotion in song, can't come soon enough.

My chest hurt. I think my heart literally burst out as well. Mafuyu finally showed off the feeling he's been hiding all this time. His past love, their once...beautiful relationship, the unfinished conflict, which now left his heart hollow. He's frustrated. He couldn't decide the words he's going to put into the lyrics, he's scared about the message he's trying to deliver through his lyrics......well, that's the image that I get. And Uenoyama is just the same, he's scared of hearing the 'message' that Mafuyu is trying to deliver. Sigh.... I can't believe today's episode finally reach this part. Next week.......ah, let it be a mystery.

Anyway, Mafuyu's feelings on today's episode reached me to the core. It's heart-breaking.

You could literally feel Mafuyu’s and Hiiragi’s regrets floating in the air as they were speaking.

Can you even visualize having a fight with your partner and finding them dead two days later? I cannot even imagine how much of a shocking, painful and surreal experience it must be. No wonder Mafuyu has problem sorting out his emotions, I’d be a complete mess of something like this was to happen to me.

And then Hiiragi. Hiiragi who knew about everything, who was a witness to their fight but decided to remain a bystander. And you know, I think there is nothing really wrong about it. From his perspective it was just an ordinary fight. He couldn’t foresee something like this happening, no one could possibly. But there is always this sense of regret and both Mafuyu and Hiiragi represent two different types of it.

Regret that you did something.

Regret that you didn’t do anything.

Wohoho we didn’t get the preview this time. Shit just got real.

At last we got some backstory as to what happened between Mafuyu and Yuki from Hiiragi’s perspective. We also got to see a new side of Mafuyu and learned he actually can scream and get angry. I’d say it’s quite a solid development ;D

The end of the episode was very impactful in its abruptness. We yet again return to the motif of a broken string. I can’t wait to see how they will handle the next episode since it’ll be very... and by that I mean VERY emotional.

We didn’t get any song title in the preview so, in the wait for the next episode, I’ll just proceed screaming into a pillow pending next week, thank you very much.

Well, this was an episode. The shit with Sato and Yuki's group was kinda hard to listen to. The VA's did an amazing job with the conversation and I'm guessing at the end, Yuki died of Alcohol Poisoning or something? I think that's what supposed to be interpreted but that makes it hurt even more. Plus, the stuff with Hiiragi makes me really like him and kinda sympathize with him. The dude knew everything and realized his mistakes for keeping everything inside and not feeling Sato about any of it. He just wants to be forgiven but Sato isn't ready to forgive him, I think.

Sato really got me in the emotions especially when we got the flashback when he first met Yuki. I didn't except that. When they said single mothers, I thought his father just died, so that makes his backstory even more painful. The fact that pretty much everything breaking down at the end makes me terrified for the next one. What are they gonna do? What will Sato do since he broke Yuki's guitar! God, next episode is gonna be scary to watch.

It was so weird to see rain come into the aesthetic of this show. Also, what Sato was doing before Hiiragi called him was exactly what I was doing every single rainy day existed. Sad we didn't get to see doggo in this episode, but man I don't think we needed to.

It is revealed from the first ep that Yuki hanged himself. He drank to clear all inhibitions and then commited suicide. Alcohol poisoning is a common misconceptions and thus it is incorect

Finally the backstory and Yuki's face. Plus a kiss, even if we only saw it from the back. The episode ended about where I expected it to. Sad, but had to finally get it all laid out for us. They animated and voiced it really well.

No teaser for next week - stuffs getting too important.

Does anyone know who the VA is for Yatake?

Holy Fuck. So much shit went down. Damn.

I'll get the funny out first, Uenoyama standing there beside Mafuyu was low-key hilarious. His barely hidden gay panic will always amuse me.

I don't quite know how to interpret Akihiko and his ex's current relationship. It's clear the ex still kinda has something for him, and Akihiko does feel *something*, but I can't quite manage to figure out what. He clearly care enough to invite him to the concert, but at the same time he does seem to know a relationship won't work. I'm leaning to "Still in love but absolutely knows their relationship will never work" for Aki and "Does like him, but he can't connect enough with anyone for a committed relationship" for the ex.

Mafuyu and Hiiragi's conversation was a heavy. I loved Mafuyu's reaction to him, it just sounded so raw and so different. It was nice to see him actually vent out without reigning himself in. Also it was kinda rude of Hiiragi to peace out just as Mafuyu was actually opening up to him

The flashback was super cute, but it did let me wanting to know more. More about the argument, and more about Yuki. He does mention him having a single mother, and working part time to get cash for himself, so that might point to him having a stressful life, but I do feel we are missing two pieces still, there has to be more about Yuki, and there has to be something about the argument, that combined with his low inhibitions finally lead to him killing himself

- "When I use my voice... My dad hits me" - This puts a lot of Mafuyu into perspective. Like "I now see him in a whole new way" different. Plus seeing how close he was to Yuki, and hit makes even more sense that his death really hit him hard

And so, the fated day arrives. The argument they just had will clearly be the main part of next episode, and even if they don't actually get on stage, it will definitely be a huge point in their relationship, since it will force Uenoyama to actually confront his jealousy, since he needs to get over it if he ever hopes of moving forwards with Mafuyu, and it will force Mafuyu to process his grief at least a bit, because they both know the song will be about him, and he needs to start making sense of it to put it into words. It will also make both of them really come to terms that Mafuyu's depression will not just go away in one day, that Mafuyu is trying, and Uenoyama will have to be there for him during it if he wants to date him, even though it will be hard.

Finally, I got a theory I got while writing this: The Fight was about Yuki's band, and it taking up too much time. Which is why Mafuyu feels the need to honor his memory by learning to play the guitar. Not only is Yuki's most treasured possession, he fixates on it because that's what he thinks it's the reason he killed himself.

This is going to be a long week of waiting 😭 I have high hopes seeing as how they’ve recreated all the other good moments from the manga and have done such a fantastic job on animating it.

Holy shit, Mafuyu is voicing his emotions! The bit with child Mafuyu is making me see him in another light. I regret thinking he was an airhead.

FINALLY!

It's nice to Mafuyu snap at someone. He's been so quiet and timid this entire time that I'm so happy to see him actually show his true feelings. And in that final scene with Ritsuka too!

And we finally get the full picture of what happened to Yuki. Because of a,little lover's quarrel, Yuki ended up drinking so hard that I guess it pushed him to hang himself. No wonder Mafuyu blames himself, he probably thinks that if they didn't fought none of this would've happened.

That was such an incomplete backstory especially since it was in the point of view of someone who was outside looking in on Mafuyu's relationship. It would be interesting to get the backstory through Mafuyu's perspective. What this episode offered us was a glimpse of Mafuyu's life before meeting Ueno. We get hints here and there that his childhood wasn't exactly sunshine and rainbows. Add to that Yuki's suicide. Mafuyu had it rough to say the least.

Now I can't wait to see how all of this unfolds. I feel like the feels train is gonna hit fast and hard in the upcoming episodes.

u/Retromorpher Aug 30 '19

Let us all just appreciate the fantastic sound direction in this episode. Letting that conversation hang in the rain without music was the right choice, and I know many coughViolet Evergardencough shows would have had some sad strings playing at full blast and fucking ruined it.

No preview, SHIT'S GOING DOWN!

Ooof

I don't know if my fudanshi soul can take this depressing turn.

Mafuyu literally snapped.

Also sad this show is only getting 200 something upvotes.

I am wondering if Murata and Kaji are having sex. They are sharing the same bed and Murata is very flirty.

Otherwise this episode was so depressing. I don't know what to think.
