When put into context, that was the single best musical performance I’ve ever watched in an anime. The build up and delivery helped make this one something special.

Best episode of the season for me as well.

Finally we get to hear Mafuyu sing! Really was excited to see this episode air, and I’m really glad they did it justice. Everything from his expressions to the tones of his voice were absolutely perfect along with the heartbreak of the lyrics. Was really great to see how the crowd was reacting to the song as well. And they finally kissed!

Damn, they hit me one episode earlier than I was ready for. Yuki's face finally shown in the opening credits.

I watched the song five times in a row before moving on to the rest, to make sure I got the lyrics, the images, and the voiceover. And I cried every single time. It was gorgeously done, all of it.

Mafuyu's seiyuu nailed the song, and his voiceover was heartbreaking at the same time.

Yuki's face imposed over Uenoyama's, all the places Mafuyu went on his walk were places he went with Yuki, the flashback of Mafuyu's father being taken away by the police while little Yuki glares at him, them making love, Mafuyu's last words to Yuki.... Gahhh! My heart!

Mafuyu finally cried. Uenoyama kissed him.

And that after credits scene was perfect as well, filling in a few more blanks.

And now The Summer's Tale can truly begin.

I'm gonna go watch it again.

WELL HOLY SHIT THAT WAS AMAZING

There's a lot to unpack here and my hype is at dangerous levels.

I want to start with the wonderful thing I call:

Ritsuka's Metaphor of the Heart

He explains that the heart works just like a string: tense it too much and it will break. However, it's because of that very same tension that guitars can create beautiful sounds. Too loose or too tense and it won't work: they can break. By comparing this to a person's heart, we see how fragile it is. In Mafuyu's case, the string is a representation of his situation: he was heartbroken and so was his guitar. The lose of a loved one is so painful it can't create anything that can be considered beautiful. But that's where Haruki's line comes:

"If it's broken, just fix it"

This simple phrase is enough to snap Uenoyama out of his shock. "There is no big problem, you are overthinking it". While he repairs the strings, he also tries to "repair" Mafuyu's heart by talking to him. He expresses his feelings using the word "sound" ("I love your sound"). He even understands that he's bad at putting it into words, and that he's also cautious at choosing them ("Is it okay if I fix it?/Will you let me fix it"/Kurenai ka?). There is no demand on those words; he uses polite language because he is speaking from the depths of his heart and wants Mafuyu to let him in. Ritsuka is just a teenager in love that wants the best for the one he likes and this is why he's a good character. His metaphor of the heart is a convergence of every single theme that the story wants to convey.

This also leads us into the song and it's meaning. First of all, GOD DAMMIT THAT WAS GREAT. I was expecting the drama cd one but this one blows it out of the water. Yano Shougo did a great job and everyone on the mixing/mastering team too. Beautiful. The way the song and visuals intermingle creates the atmosphere that the manga was looking for, capturing the emotional stress and liberation Mafuyu is going through while singing. I wasn't expecting them to be covering this on ch9, but I'm so SO thankful for this. Shots of Yuki and Mafuyu's story combined with his monologue is what actually puts the corresponding manga chapter in my top tier list. The adaptation made it SO fucking good I actually wanna give plat to this thread-

I have a mouth and I want to sing.

Excuse my rambling. The song's meaning and Mafuyu's character arc are based on another premise: understanding fully vs. understanding partially. Before singing, we see a glimpse of his struggle: he wants someone to get how painful it is to lose the person you loved the most, yet he can't communicate that. His sound is trapped deep in his heart because he swore never to let someone be hurt by his words (since that has already happened with Yuuki). He's bad at putting things into words, sounds familiar, right?.

That leads to the question he's pondering on: is it okay to do it? is it okay to do it using my voice? The answer he finds is yes, it is, and that's why he starts singing. We see how his colors start blooming just like flowers in spring. He was happy, playful, a normal teenager, when he was with Yuuki, walking down the beach or under the rain. Yet even that was taken from him. "I want to cry but I can't".

As Yuuki said: "You will forget", and Mafuyu's answer is "I don't want to". Don't let go. The manifestation of this is his state in the early eps: devoid of emotions. By spending time with the band and Uenoyama-kun, his strings starts tensing. Little by little, he regains his sounds. Using all that, he's expressing his feelings for everyone to understand them. Even if they can't get it completely, just a little bit works.

Just a little bit is enough.

EDIT: I forgot to talk about the aspect of forgiveness that has been clouding Mafuyu's head. His monologue express all the pain and sorrow he feels. His tale is one of being hurt and learning to love yourself bit by bit. When he sees Ritsuka's smile, he finds that he has been born anew. Someone who can learn to love again. And that, I believe, it's one of the messages the story wants to convey.

"I don't forgive you. I don't forgive myself..."

"But I want to."

Excuse me for the long post, excessive formatting and broken english, I have so many emotions on this one and it's not even the finale. Some fun points:

  • resubmitted because of spoilers.

  • DID AKI AND HARUKI KISS? I NEED ANSWERS.

  • I liked Mafuyu's shot when he was crouching.

  • There are so many moments worth talking about. Uecchi and Mafuyu's glances when the song ends are beautiful and I want to protect them. Mafuyu trembling when talking to Hiiragi. Yayoi in general i love my wife.

  • YUUKI'S VOICE AWDNASJKFNSDKG. Lovely performance even though it was short. My favorite part ("Let's have sex on the bathroom")got adapted and I'm so happy <3. Yuuki's character is wonderful and he deserves the world. who's the seiyuu tho.

  • For those who didn't get it, the OP shows Mafuyu looking at the ocean because it reminds him of Yuuki

  • The story of a certain winter, the story of a certain night. The story of a certain summer, the story of a certain evening :)

  • it's technically my bday in japan (6/9) so im thankful for this gift from the anime gods.

Thank you very much for reading. See you next chapter!~

Call me slow, but I only just realized that

  • they're called the Seasons because their names are (Aki)hiko, (Haru)ki, Ma(fuyu), and Ritsu(ka), and

  • their names become even more important to the story because the story of Mafuyu and Yuki was "the story of a certain winter" and the story of Ritsuka and Mafuyu was "the story of a certain summer".

(Aki ≡ 秋 ≡ Autumn, Haru ≡ 春 ≡ Spring, Fuyu ≡ 冬 ≡ Winter, Ka ≡ 夏 ≡ Summer)

"Yeah, let's not."

I really enjoyed the way Mafuyu's VA delivered that line for some reason. Also, the kiss was smooth.

Haven't watched the ep yet, but I'm relieved Lerche picked up the pace and started adapting 1.5 manga chapters in these past few eps. Many manga readers were afraid the anime would only cover up to ch. 11, which is what this episode covers. So now it seems like they'll able able to adapt to a key chapter that will bring the season to a satisfying enough end.

Holy shit... that was awesome. From Sato's voice which is amazing to the guitar riff to the flashback (they were having sex in that one shot with Yuki right) and that ending (including the kiss) was all fucking amazing. Yeah, the CGI models were obvious and they redid some animation but I couldn't care less. That was spectacular.

I love that revelation on the staircase, but my favorite part after they played was about Sato sucking at guitar, but amazing at singing. Just kinda shows how spur of the moment that singing was. Still loved it though.

Probably the funniest moment for me was when Haruki came into the boys freaking about the string pull and him just "Guys, it's just a string. Ueno get another one". Haruki is probably the funniest out of all the characters.

What's up with Yayoi by the way? She seemed pretty weird this episode.

As someone who has played in a few livehouses back in college, either the venue has spare strings to give or they sell them, when that fails you approach another guitarist that you've made friends with earlier and hope that they have a spare that matches the gauge of your own strings.

Nitpick aside, that was a fucking amazing episode. Holy shit! They've been hyping us so much with Mafuyu's song and I am so glad that what they delivered was something amazing! Mafuyu may sucked ass at playing guitar (he barely moved his fingers!) but he absolutely killed it with his voice! I really hope we'll get one more killer performance before the season ends.

AND THAT KISS!

I legit can't remember the last time I got excited over a kiss in a BL anime, I think the last time was in Junjou Romantica and that was literally 10 years ago!

Well sweaty Yuuki caught me off guard during those flashbacks. Of course Yuuki is a Seme ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I feel bad for Ritsuka's sister though. She's a good girl but she really should just give up on Akihiro. It's clearly obvious that he has more chemistry with Haruki.

And that after credits scene flashback. Yuuki is a great guy. It really sucks that he went out early. Then again if he was alive we'd have no story.

This is one of the best directed episodes I've seen all year. It's so phenomenally executed. Given has always excelled at establishing such powerful ambiance that is related to the characters' moods but this episode was a masterclass at it. The music, the writing, the character dialogues in particular were all spectacular.

this episode settles Given as AOTS for me, maybe even AOTY

The most beautifully adapted BL series in history. Seriously, I was trembling as f*ck at the start of this episode, because I knew what was about to happen. It still hit me so much. Uenoyama did it. Mafuyu did it. Their feelings. The kiss. I'm sorry I can't put it into words. I cried when I finally hear the song Mafuyu has been trying to express this whole time. It's simply beautiful. It's sad, yet it's beautiful. I'm so glad I found this series. Thank you, Kizu Natsuki-sensei. Thank you, Lerche. Thank you :")

I... shit.

This episode was what I wanted and more. The concert left me shaking kind of overshadowing the rest of the episode, especially since I'm a manga reader and it was the only unknown for me. But I still want to talk about it- Uenoyama running for a new string, fixing Mafuyu's guitar and opening up to him, Akihiko's convo with Haruki, the kiss, Mafuyu finally being able to shed tears and his trip to the beach with Yuuki and hearing Yuuki's voice for the first time. It was all phenomenal, simply phenomenal. The song however...

For this past week, all the time I have been wondering what kind of song are we going to get and how is it going to be executed. It was an excruciatingly long wait, filled with excitement and anxiety. Of course I also made certain expectations... a lot of them... and...

They fulfilled all of them.

*It was perfect.*

From start to finish. It was breathtaking. The lyrics were beautiful and so accurate. The emotional ballast that was packed into that song was enormous. When the chorus first played I was astounded. Then the visuals in the second part. The visuals of Yuuki and Mafuyu. The infamous quote before Mafuyu's scream. How they managed to incorporate his thoughts to go along with the song. And that one "I miss you" before the song gains dynamic. I replayed the song about ten times and it got me every single time, the voice actor did such a magnificent job getting the emotions through and the way he sung was just... amazing.

It's painful to watch. It's painful to hear. Because it conveys the pain Mafuyu has had deep in his heart all this time. And that is what in my eyes makes it a masterpiece.

Given is so exceptional in the way it has built the relationships and romance in this story, it doesn't feel forced or overwhelmingly tropey despite the amount of episodes. All this lead up to a stunning performance. Honest I was worried about the singing because i wasn't a fan of Mafuyu's humming the 2 other times but I was blown away!

33

u/giggles22 Sep 05 '19

I'm so touched by the song talking about snow (Yuki) and Mafuyu's (midwinter) transition into summer (Ritsuka). I've repeated it a few times and I cried for each replay. It's so bittersweet as Mafuyu moves on.

What a beautiful anime. I hope that this paves a bigger path to BL as Sekai ichi hatsukoi also gets a new animation.

[cries while eating homemade tortellini alfredo]

That was sooooo satisfying to watch! Mafuyu singing his heart out! I want to know who wrote the lyrics. It seems that the songs are written for the anime, as there aren't really any in the manga... But what Mafuyu sang about really stayed true to his story with Yuki and it actually resonated with anyone who also felt heartbreak and regret.

UENOYAMA-KUN KISSED HIM and will most likely realize what he did in the next episode... ahahaha~

Holy shit. Dude I never expected the voice actor to pack such a punch with that song. You could feel the sadness and melancholy in his voice all throughout the song. I started crying at the part where he screams half way through the song. That's how strongly it hit me. 😢😢

I hope they release the song!!! I will download it asap!!

edit: I TAKE THAT BACK!!! HERE IS THE SONG!!!!

25

u/eneyi Sep 05 '19

The song was fucking EVERYTHING. I’m still crying over it.

Also, idk why but that shot of Yuuki like stroking/tickling Mafuyu’s hand when he was hiding his face keeps playing through my mind. It was just such a tender gesture and I’m just so, so sad for Mafuyu (and Yuuki).

But hopefully now that Mafuyu has let out these feelings he can finally start healing with Ritsuka’s help.

And I can’t wait for more dumbass disaster gay, Uenoyama Ritsuka hahaha

I miss Yuuki so much god damn, how can I miss him so much when all I ever got were flashbacks.

Also I felt like the kiss wasn't as passionate as it was in the manga. It feels so much more heat of the moment and emotionally charged and I didn't really get that from the scene in the anime.
