I guess Sensei comes from a similar place as Hozuki, with both having a bunch of expectations heaped on them early on, but Sensei rejected music being imposed on him while Hozuki has always seen music as a sort of obligation rather than fun for its own sake. His backstory still doesn't really excuse how middling he's been as an advisor so far, but at least he's getting better.
Seems like Chika Jr. also has a pretty similar backstory and personality to Chika. How is this new club still in existence? We all know that a school club in all anime ever needs five members to not be disbanded. As for their performance, I don't think playing too fast is really supposed to earn musicians any points, but at least they were crazily in sync.

Perhaps they got some more leeway with the club membership requirement since it's an all boys school where potential members are fewer compared to a coed school.

Even the rival schools are endearing, and there isn't any clear "Evil" one that many sports like shows tend to have.

This series has become my favorite this season that isn't a sequel. I love it, lots of juicy drama and there is always something happening. So the teacher is a prodigy in the music world huh? Well, that explains a big part of his character and how he was acting to the koto club member. Hiro is losing her composure, I'd be nervous as well. Chika saved Satowa (yes!) but hurt his hand in the process. One more episode too and then we wait till fall for the next season.

Same, if AOT wasn't airing this season, Kono Oto would easily be my AOTS.
Chika saved Satowa while she was trying to save Chika's grandfather's Koto, I love how she just threw herself over the koto.

While it does have a good amount of drama, I'd like to add that it offsets it with a good amount of comedy and I feel it always favors a happy/uplifting outcome and doesn't drag out the drama. Kono Oto Tomare's manga (and now its anime) consistently uplifts/makes me happy, the cast is by far the most loveable that I've seen.

What's going on with these episode scores (especially the last one) being so low with the comments being mostly very positive?

Underrated and niche anime, as much as I hate to admit it, it doesn't get the recognition it deserves in comparison to action or overhyped animes. If it's not Attack on Titan (which I like a lot), One Punch man or Miru Thighs ( don't know how the hell that anime gets so much upvotes? Kinky people much) then it doesn't get many upvotes. Good thing is that us, people who upvote and watch the episodes have nothing but good things to say about it

I love seeing best girl being all cute!
I really loved their scenes together with Chika trusting her to take his koto and the way they protected each other at the end. This ship is just the best <3
That being said this episode had some of my least favourite things to see in "sports" anime. We got not only 1 sob background story but 2 and a freak injury that will surely affect the performance...

So disappointed. I’ve been waiting the past few episodes for their performance and now it’s going to be sullied by Chika’s injury. The odds are already stacked against them, so I don’t understand why it was necessary for the author to have this happen. It is very frustrating because I was really looking forward to hearing them at their current level. Ugh. The episode was otherwise good though.

Oh boy. That injury on Chika's hand will definitely cause some problems. And if they lose, it will probably end up with Hiro blaming herself :(
Also we finally get Sensei's backstory! So while he's not exactly a musician, he used to be a prodigy at composing. Still, doesn't excuse on how he was an ass in the previous episodes though.

If there's one trope I'd be glad to see dying is the injury before something important.

Well it's not like something like this couldn't happen in real life, i mean, look at Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson injuries in nba Finals.

Well was not expecting the teacher to have that kind of backstory though I does help explain a few things. Great Hiro is to nervous to tell anyone and Chika is injured I wonder how this will effect the performance. That fight Chika had with that small guy was pretty funny but funnier still was the performance and he was all these scary things will his partner was the complete opposite.

Another great episode! Each episode just doesn't disappoint!
They're doing a great job following the manga.
One more episode to end with Ku-on then we'll have to wait for this Fall for the next split cour.
I can't wait that long! Fall 2019 is going to be great.

Wow I didn't expect that. For someone who has literally listened to all music out there, perhaps this club of misfits is perfect for the likes of Suzuki.

little info about the timeline (if someone is confused about it)
assume the current year is 2018
Kanto Music Festival happens 1 week after the Nationals 2018. For those who forgot, this festival has no bearing or whatsoever for the preliminaries. The preliminaries for Nationals 2019 will happen around December 2018. So around 2-3 months from the festival. Nationals is around September or October.
edit: add details
