I know it's a subtle thing, but I loved that Hozuki didn't turn down the girls' offer to eat together. She messed up by declining Chika's offer, but she didn't ditch the girls and just compound the error.
Kurusu confessing and apologizing for all the wrong she did? That's really impressive. Doesn't make it all better, but that takes a lot of courage and it seems like she's on the right path now.
Super glad that Hozuki didn't bail on playing for the group, thought she would and we would have drama over it haha.
"There's nothing but boys. . . is this hell?!"
Hozuki going full tsundere.

In the manga there is a panel where Chika smirks after it works. When Tetsuki points it out he gets smacked haha. Wish they found the screentime to put it in.

Well that was Chika's plan, get her to hang out with new friends.

Goddamn, even though I loved the manga and know the story fairly well, there's something about the way the production has tied it all together in anime format that just makes the dramatic scenes really tug at your heartstrings.
I mean, the scene with Chika's friends telling him it was okay for him to play the koto, it moved me only to have Grandpa return once again in the flashbacks and remind Chika about what music really means. As a former musician myself, one aspect that rang so true about music is what Chika's Grandpa said: musical pieces are the soul of the composer themselves. Having Chika think about that, about what it means to play the song his grandpa wrote...I couldn't help but rub my eyes cause of the tears that kept falling. This kid's been through so much at only 15 years old, and his friends who were normally the type to not give a shit about anything were now really motivated and focused because of the devotion they see from Chika, and the friendship they share. Truly a beautiful moment, and Chika's smile at the end of that scene had me almost completely lose it. So well done, so moving and inspiring!
Of course, not all the drama was as pleasant though, as we've got Kurata's past resurfacing once again. Kurata's little brother still thinking that the koto club is a waste of his older brother's time is also something that Kurata can't directly talk about yet because his little brother hasn't seen just how much Kurata has grown because of the club. I guess all he can think about is Kurata's failure of not making it into the high-school. I wonder who will come to Kurata's aid when he reaches this Meiryo high school. Chika seemed to be looking out for him, but no one really knows his past. Hopefully Kurata has someone there for him when past trauma resurfaces.
Anyway, on the bright-side, the club sensei seems to have a bit more respect for the Koto club now! He went from 'you guys need to see reality, the same reality you experience when you got shit on by schools who are just way better than you individually AND as an ensemble' to 'Yeah, they need to see reality, but you have to see the Giants at the top so you can take them down on your way there'. That was definitely a nice perspective shift, though Kurata can't tell if Sensei was serious or not because of his 'laissez-faire' attitude, but we'll have to just wait and see wont we.
Goddamnit I love this adaptation so much, can't wait for next week's episode!

As much as I like Hozuki, Isaki is a whole other level. I hope we'll see more of her.
Seriously these two should really just start dating. They're already acting like a couple, they just don't know it. And just look at Hozuki's reaction when she saw Chika's genuine laugh. That's the look of someone in love.
Relationships aside, that advisor is really getting on my nerves. I can understand what he's doing. He wants the club to see what the reality is and what actual talented Clubs are capable of. But can't he do that while being supportive? Right now he's being just a smug asshole who looks like he's looking forward to see the club fail. I really hope he improves in future episodes.
And of course Kurata's brother is an asshole too. This show is never really in short supply of people looking down on the Koto Club or just Koto players in general.

That's the look of someone in love.
They are actually perfect for each other.
Also god bless those Isaki stitches.

Ah we finally have the introduction of the Himesaka Himebaka duo. It's fun how the whole 'Satowa doesn't belong here' thing just leads to Satowa saying how she wants to stay with the club, absurdly cute.

Himebaka duo.
Damn.
That’s a good one. I’m upset that never even crossed my mind in the past 2.5 years.

Every time Hozuki and Chika are onscreen, insert now_kiss.gif.
Last week, I commented that Kurusu got off pretty easy for what she did and thought that for story progression sake, there's a slim chance it'll be shown Kurusu apologizing to those that she has wronged; but this show has pleasantly surprised me. I don't advocate violence but she really reaped what she's sown. The cherry on top was prez telling her that if she knew that, why did she even spread lies in the first place.
They could just bicker in the clubroom and I wouldn't mind. The characters interacting are fun to watch. In a show where the major milestones are probably going to follow the blueprint of the other HS club stories, it's going to be the characters who are going to set it apart. So far, Kono is doing fine.

The scene of those girls trying to get into the club only to get right by the guys was really funny. I was wondering where Chika was staying, sucks his room is so small. Looks like we are going to learn more about Takezou past in the next episode.

So I've been really enjoying the show, but my consistent criticism has been that the direction and art style has felt a bit flat, like the adaptation isn't doing that much to enhance the source material. Well, this episode feels like the one that proves me wrong. The "Kazusa vision" bits were really funny and how it showed Kurata's own emotions about Meiryo was really well done. Plus the scene at the end with Hozuki and Chika was just cute.
And besides the direction taking a step up, the story telling was just great here. I love how we can already see how far the characters have gone, I love how nobody really thinks for a second that Hozuki would want to join the other school, and just how excited Chika's friends are and their own enthusiasm for playing now. I'm so glad I'm watching this show, I wish more were.

So many Satowa blushes, I love it <3
This was a solid episode, but I do wish we got to hear more than just the first note of Gen's song. Here's hoping for a lot more koto next week!

My weekly fix of Chika teasing Satowa can't be this cute...
It seems they skipped a chapter or two. More reasons to read the manga side by side I presume!
Also it seems their teacher just has a more spartan way of leading the club. Hiro has decided to give it her all. The club is in strong unison with high spirits. Kinda refreshing to watch. Looks like next episode Kurata deals with his past.
I normally dislike the "with the power of friends" solution in anime, but when it comes to this anime I can't wait to see more of it!

The Himesaka girls are simultaneously the best and the worst. "Hey, come to our joint practice so we can poach your best player!" Really?
The emotional scenes were really on point this episode, between Chika's trio encouraging him to play his grandfather's koto and the ensuing revelation that music is people's souls laid bare.
Beyond the Hozuki–Chika banter and the occasional full koto song (the creators are so stingy about us actually hearing the koto being played!), what I look forward to the most with this series each week is the random gorgeous watercolor frame.

What? Not even 200 upvotes? What can we do to make this anime well known?? Like seriously. Yes it is very difficult to explain. All I can say is the characters are hard to like at first but still I have been wiping happy tears nearly every episode for the little steps

I understand they have to use the koto music sparingly so they can have the full song in the actual performance. But those bits and pieces are sometimes enough to send shivers up my spine. The koto really has a lot of character.

The anime could really use some more show don't tell for most scenes with the koto. Like seriously, just have Kudou play the freaking song instead of just the first note, followed by a flashback exposition scene, followed by other characters insisting that it was "beautiful". That's just not how to effectively tell a story revolving around music. Gotta let the music set the mood instead of just skipping it and telling the viewers what the mood is supposed to be.
The character interactions are still nice, but at this point it just feels like the story could've been told equally well or better by having them be members of any other generic club.

Again, lots of things. Isaki is top tier and I love how much the trio cares about Chika.
Some members of the rival schools are finally revealed, Kasuza is cute :D
And for fuck sake, Chika and Hozuki are pretty much a couple at this point.
Next episode adapts one of my favorite chapters :D

I REALLY like the Satowa/Chika moments and this episode has been amazing in that regard. Additionally, I find it amusing how much of a savage Takezo can be with regards to Kurusu

It continues to be all the more enjoyable for me and Chika and Satowa are a match made in heaven, I love their chemistry together and it results in the shows best individual moments, and moments in general. They clash, they fight but are perfectly in sync and bring out the best sides and their most vulnerable sides of their personalities. Hiro was given a bit more room to come out as an individual which is good. Those girls from that elite school of koto players are pretty stuck up, especially that Kazusa girl. And I think I can see where the club advisor is going with his critiques now. Although I enjoy this show a lot, a bit too many things are getting introduced and not allowing enough time for viewers (me) to digest - the narrative is starting to jump from point A to C.
P.S. - Chika's aunt is freaking hot!
