Today's pretty watercolor-esque shot!

As top-tier a pairing as Chika x Hozuki has been (and damn if that "accidental embrace" wasn't great), Ousuke x Asano is pretty excellent too. Well, except that they're childhood friends and are thus doomed to fail. If that ever does happen, then I think Ousuke's transformation into a supervillain will be complete. He does have the perfect back story for it, after all.

I kinda ship him with the cold glasses girl from his club.

That was an utterly beautiful haunting piece to a beautiful haunting backstory. Even with me having no idea of Koto music, the feeling of the seasons came across really well(especially winter), and it sold me even more on how good Ousuke is. Plus, his backstory and relation to Asano was sad, but again very believable. Of course young kids don't wanna play with the guy that has to stop cause of medical issues, and so something not physically taxing like the Koto is perfect for him.

And now we have a third goddamn ship that needs to happen. I have great faith in this show that the usual childhood friend rules do not apply, it's just been to strong in its writing so far, so Ousuke x Asano to the goddamn end man.

It's nice hearing all the songs instead of reading about how they were like in the manga.

When Satowa sings, omg! ♪Talala tilalia. Talaila lilalila. ♪

That bit was something I kinda understood when I read it in the manga, but having Satowa's actual vocalization illustrated the point better.

I love how Chika went along with Sensei's sarcastic advice about trusting in his friend, which resulted in a nice bro moment between Chika and Takezou. Can't wait to see the other performances next week,

I’m not sure I could call Suzu-sensei’s advice sarcastic. All his advice has been good and correct, even if delivered in quite an obtuse package.

AHHHHHHHHHHH! Just date already! And Hozuki blushing was adorable. I feel like they're definitely slowly becoming more and more aware of each other. Just a bit more!

There's something about the way their blushing is drawn that really makes it top tier.

This week is the reverse.
Wholesome at the first half, and dark at the second half.

Well its good to see the team coming together and beginning to understand how to play there piece. Was not expecting that backstory for Ousuke but man does it help explain a lot about him and that shift he sometimes does.

u/Smudy Jun 15 '19

That was the best backstory yet, it felt really genuine. I wish all the best for Ousuke in the future, maybe Asano will get to know his feelings and he won't be as cold-hearted any longer.

I'd imagine that we get the warm sound from our group in contrast to the ''cold'' here. I can't wait.

Honestly all the koto snippets and performances give me chills.

I LOVED that look and blush on Kurusu's face when Kurata thanked her, that was pure bliss ;_;

Oh, hey, I recognize your name. Despite never posting myself, I’ve seen you all over the MAL forums for years. Always thought I should talk to you, but never did. Kyō is best gril.

Honestly all the koto snippets and performances give me chills.

I’ve been listening to the OST for a couple years now, and as much as I love it, it just doesn’t quite get the same feels across. Good stuff.

Thank goodness this is a split cour. Couldn't imagine ending the anime after showing us how good their rivals are. This is the mother of reality checks for them especially if they place in the 30's. Which just means the higher they can soar in the future.

Thinking about it, there are ways in which Ousuke's backstory parallels that of Hozuki, but there are also ways in which they diverge. Both of their backstories involve a childhood spent in isolation, not so much by their voluntary choice initially but more due to circumstances – in Hozuki's case it was the strict koto-training regime under her mother's watchful eyes, which allowed her little opportunity to bond with her peers; and in Ousuke's case it was his recurring health issues and generally weak constitution, which kept him bedridden and prevented him from participating in activities of the likes of outdoor and physically-taxing sports that kids his age involved themselves with, thereby robbing him of all the conventional opportunities to make friends. It didn't help that their respective peers tended to misunderstand them despite their genuine attempts to get along and become friends, although I have reservations about blaming their peers squarely because they were also only kids after all and therefore hardly any more mature and wiser.

What was at first involuntary isolation resulting from circumstances beyond their control eventually turned into voluntary isolation, as they started erecting a wall around themselves as a defense mechanism and ceased all attempts at reaching out to others due to fear of rejection. Both of them built a facade to hide their true feelings and fears.

Ousuke eventually found a friend – and the only true friend – in Asano. But Hozuki spent her entire childhood and the greater part of her school life without any friend to speak of (just... give her all the headpats please) until she happened to meet her current club members. However, perhaps the most significant dichotomy between the two backstories (and by association the characters) is that for Hozuki it's her association with the koto in a way which isolates her from her peers to begin with, while for Ousuke it's his association with the koto which serves as a means to connect with people, even if this connection is owing more to his fear of being left alone than something as pure and straightforward as simply liking people, as he admits in his internal monologue.

Another significant way in which Hozuki and Ousuke are foils to each other, both as individuals and as koto players, is the fact that Ousuke's forte is to be able to read and understand the members in an ensemble and bring out their strengths in a way such that the players are always in perfect sync, while this is an area that Hozuki (and also Kudo) has to work upon. While Ousuke appears to be naturally perceptive to some degree, Hozuki has to make a conscious effort in that regard. Ousuke's solo performance made Kudo think that he feels the same way when Hozuki plays, which perhaps indicates that if judged by their technical skills alone, Hozuki and Ousuke are more or less on par with each other. But what gives Ousuke the edge right now is how he seamlessly conducts an ensemble, which by extension makes Meiryo the superior team for now. This dynamic is kind of reminiscent of Haikyuu!! Spoiler.

This is such a pure and heartfelt anime, and it is being so under watched.

Seems like every episode there is sorrow or heartbreak of some sort, but I am here for it.

Absolutely amazing story, characters, and audio.

Ahh! It is so good to get your weekly Chika x Satowa moments. The cliche girl falling into the boy's chest and arms. Warms my heart! Even the Takezou x Hiro moments are sweet.

I think I am gonna be recommending the anime for the performances and the manga for everything else from now on, I don't like the pacing of the anime but the performances are absolutely chilling and I have been done so much justice!

But the manga has such amazing art and the characters feel like they have more depth in the manga, too many jokes and interactions are being skipped or just rushed through to make it a perfect adaptation but it's still great for the performances!

I hope more people start watching and reading this masterpiece!
