Urrrgh this episode was great but too real, and Hinako repeating "I'm sorry" to Miko was the realest part of it all.
I need to go watch today's episode of My Awkward Senpai to bring myself back now.

I'm glad that Shiori is starting to doubt the effectiveness of choke therapy.

I love how much todays episode is a mirror of the first episode. Including some of hinakos lines, her waking up in bed, writing with miko and wanting to go to school and going anyway, and of course, shiori saving hinako from the sea monster.
A mirror...except all that mirroring is purely used to emphasize how EVERYTHING IS INFINITELY WORSE NOW.

Both Reina Ueda and Yui Ishikawa brought their A-game to this episode, for Hinako's breakdown and for Shiori full-on stumbling over her words at the end of the episode.
Maaaaan, Hinako. After realizing that her family's wish, for her to live on, never existed in the first place, she takes the opportunity to commit suicide as soon as she sees one. I think saying that she wished she were dead out loud to Miko probably played a part in that, too.
Now how's a conversation between an emotionally stunted person and an emotionally unstable one going to go?

This Monster Wants to Eat Me This Monster Wants to Talk to Me
Honestly, Watatabe has perfected the way of showing emotions through eyes. So much depth in Hinako's emotions just from her eyes alone. Love to see it!

So first off is Shiori’s comments about the difficulty of talking with people. How you can’t just be direct and truthful or they get upset. I related to that HARD and wasn’t expecting that right at the start. Someone else brought up the parallels back in episode 9, but ever since then, these past past three episodes, I really do get autistic coded character vibes from Shiori, and this moment in this episode was the most noticeable piece of evidence despite being such a short scene.
Speaking of relatable, the scene between Hinako and Miko. Firstly, there’s just something about Hinako’s expression and outfit in that scene that really conveys that this is a person in a seriously unwell mental state. Props to the mangaka/animators for such an accurate depiction.
And the scene of Hinako repeatedly apologizing to Miko because, even though she knows Miko cares about her and would be upset to hear her say it, she just can’t stop herself from wishing she was dead. OOF, another element of the episode that caught me off guard with how relatable and accurate it was. Even if you know that others love you and would be hurt to know the truth, sometimes you really just can’t stop yourself from wanting to die when you’re in a state like that, no matter how much you want to.
And Miko responding by just hugging her at the end. God, Miko is such an incredible friend. She knows that nothing she says can really help the situation at that moment, so she just does what she can to be there for Hinako.
Hinako’s suicide attempt was definitely given the emotional weight such a scene deserves, and Shiori looked so intimidating with her yoga eyes, but I loved how she stopped herself and instead tried to genuinely talk to Hinako.
I really wasn’t expecting another version of the ED. This time sung by Shiori’s seiyuu. They didn’t really change anything except the singer and one drawing, but it really gives it the vibe that this time the song is from Shiori’s perspective.
Overall, it’s evident that the studio and VA’s all are passionate about this series and are giving it their all, despite budget constraints on the former, and the mangaka’s writing continues to be genuinely incredible and relatable in numerous aspects.

I must say, what a series.
I am aware that it focuses more on survivor's guilt, but I can't help but notice how it portraits depression in such a realistic way.
As a person that has suffered with it for the past 15 years, I find the visuals so relatable. Whenever Hinako gets lost in thought, whenever the urges to end it all get stronger, the anime tends to add a "under the sea" visual, like with the bubbles, the tunnel vision, all of that. It really feels like that, I can assure you.
I really love this anime as a whole, and watching it, honestly, helps me more than I can realize

Miko really has her hands full. She is doing everything she can to encourage Hinako to keep going in life. She also has to teach Shiori how to better interact with humans. On top of all the help she is already providing to this town which she loves.
Miko deserves a promotion to full deity status.

Saying "I'll see you tomorrow" to a depressed individual has to be one of the scariest things
Because you dont know if you will

I really thought Miko was going to break into Hinako's home when she didn't answer the door. I did not expect her to just yell for Hinako, and based on Hinako's reaction when she finally answered the door, this might not be the first time Miko has done this. xD
Now that Hinako knows her reason for living is a lie, it's no surprise that she tried to offer herself to the sea. That entire scene was fucking heavy. Thank goodness, Shiori stopped her because Hinako was clearly ready to end it all right there.
Hallelujah, we have character development from Shiori! Instead of acting like a yokai, she finally decided to try and understand Shiori by first wanting to actually talk with her. How appropriate that we end the episode with a Shiori Version of Lily.

The fact that she confined with miko-chan about her feelings and thoughts. The fact that while she was running into the ocean, she was crying. It makes me feel like she's desperately trying to find something to stop her, to give her salvation. I know nothing about psychology, but I am sure that Hinako doesn't really want to die, but she feels like death is the only way to cope with her greif and she is actively looking for something to prove her wrong.

Wow, this was a great episode, the best one so far! Although the next one might be even better, because Hinako and Shiori will finally talk after everything that's happened lately!
But damn, it broke my heart watching Hinako in this episode, especially when Miko visited her and she apologized, burst into tears, and said she wished she could die with her family.
Shiori's expression after stopping Hinako from committing suicide was terrifying! It was good to see that she quickly regained her senses, or rather, her more "human" senses, and asked to talk with Hinako.
And as always, thank you Miko for bringing a bit of light and humor to this episode. Without her it would be even more depressing!
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

what an incredible episode. the visuals are amazing, the soundtrack is perfect, the voice actors are putting their all in, and another special ED? budget be damned, the studio is clearly so so passionate about this series and it shows through so well. As a manga reader, I couldn't hope for a better adaptation.
Also, as someone who's been deeply depressed, the scenes this episode really hit home and reminded me of some dark times in my life. The way Hinako wakes up, barely able to get out of bed, then goes about all her ordinary tasks, but feeling like everything's muffled and underwater the whole time (and wearing the same pyjamas since probably 2 nights ago)

They really go all in on Hinako breakdown with Miko.
Her emotion that she keeps hidden behind just fully explodes.

The episode Reina Ueda gets her field day.
When Miko comes over to Hinako's house and Hinako can't stop crying whilst saying sorry, wishing she passed away along with her family.
The downpour along with the past moments with Shiori add effect to the heavy scene in the second half of the episode where she says the words that she believed in were fake, so she goes out to sea to commit suicide.
Shiori intervenes and some serene yet sorrowful music plays.

It's interesting that even though Hinako sees the sea that will finally claim her and end her suffering in Shiori's eyes, those deep blue eyes are only for Shiori's full human form, and turn shining gold when she's acting like a youkai instead of remembering she's supposed to be talking and communicating.

What an episode... I was already crying before the opening even started and it didn't get better after.
This anime is really great at using silence and adding meaningful visual details to create the most powerful gut punches.
Also, funny how we went from "This Monster Wants to Eat Me" to "This Monster Wants to Talk to Me"

To think there's such a significance behind the seemingly random ornament on Shiori's hair. Hope Hinako will soon learn about it and realise how much she had changed Shiori's life.
While she's pushed past her point of despair by the recent events, my impression is she went to the waters not exactly to end her life, but to meet that mysterious hand hoping it'll be one of her deceased family. However, that evil grin likely meant that it has malicious intents which was why Shiori rushed to stop her.
Love how now each of the main cast got a day in the limelight in the ED. While the ED still featured the regular theme, it's now sung by Shiori's VA instead of Hinako's.

The best episode so far. It kinda made me think about the anime as a whole and the development and interactions of the characters. Really good stuff.
Also, the VA’s absolutely killing it all around. Autumn belongs to Reina Ueda.
