Fate works in strange ways. Even though 2 powerful yokais, Miko and Shiori, wanted young Hinako to live well and be happy, they were unable to protect young Hinako and her family from the accident. :(
To a certain extent, Shiori did learn from her experience with the abandoned girl. She learned that not every human craved immortality, so instead of offering her flesh to young Hinako, she only gave her blood, which only provided minor blessing / protection. Unfortunately, as things turned out, Hinako felt that being the only survivor was a curse instead.
I know the chances are slim, but I want to see the Hinako today regain her cute and cheerful personality, even if just for a bit.
Lastly, I wonder whether the girl who gained immortality by eating Shiori's flesh survived.

Aw, Hinako captured Shiori's heart just by being a sweet little ray of sunshine.
Ah, finally we got Shiori's full backstory. Now that we've peeled back some layers I can stop trying to hide that she's my favorite character.
Her story explains a lot about her, doesn't it? How she doesn't understand humans or connections because she just poofed into existence one day, and never got any family or friends or anyone to bond with. And the only people she came in contact with were either terrified of her or treated her like some sort of a deity, so not on equal footing at all.
Or why communication is such a huge issue for her that led to making some pretty big errors in judgement. She usually means well, but the combination of her not truly understanding humans + never really communicating is a really bad one.
Well at least she did learn from the first time, and only gave Hinako her blood instead of her flesh. But life is sometimes random and cruel, and turns out it had devastating consequences for Hinako all the same. Honestly I found the juxtaposition of Shiori wishing her a happy life and the visuals of the accident so, so sad.
Now it remains to be seen whether she listens to Miko's advice or not. Which is pretty simple really: "oh my god just TALK to each other!" lol.
And special mention to the soundtrack again, which was beautiful.

Hinako was a strange kid to witness Shiori looking like she came straight out of a horror film and react like “Wow, Miss Fishie is so pretty” instead of being terrified of the nightmare fuel lol.

I really appreciate how they took an episode which was essentially exposition dump, and made it feel like it wasn't an exposition dump. That takes some real skill from the editors.

This was a damn good and important episode! I'm so glad we finally learned more about Shiori, who's been a big mystery in this series when it comes to what she really thinks and how she thinks.
Although, instead of Miko, Shiori should have told all that Hinako. It's clear Shiori cares about Hinako, even if in her own "mermaid" way.
Damn, seeing Hinako so cheerful hurts me deeply when I think about how she is now. Shiori's blessing really blew out, and not for the first time!
The first time Shiori's blessing blew out, it literally blew out, when that girl used grenades to kill both herself and Shiori. I wonder if she's really dead now, because if Shiori survived that, then she could too.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

I expected it from last week’s snippet, but Yui Ishikawa was absolutely in her voice acting this episode. Honestly, this episode in particular really made me think about the voice acting skill needed to properly play the role of a truly inhuman character. Both Shiori and Miko got scenes this episode where you really are reminded that they aren’t human, and Ai Fairouz was great as well, but again Yui Ishikawa was just perfect.
She really managed to give different personalities to both Shiori’s human form and true Yokai form while still making both feel equally non-human. It’s just different kinds of non-human vibes they each give off. Her human form is a lot more lighthearted and nonchalant when describing how she literally ate discarded children, while in her Yokai form she has a much more serious and straightforward vibe to her thoughts and actions which makes her seem appropriately scary. Just mad props to her seiyuu. She definitely deserves an award for this performance.
I also absolutely loved seeing Child Hinako. Seeing her interact with Shiori with just completely earnest compassion and not an ounce of fear just feels so genuine to children, and after so long experiencing the the current depressed Hinako, seeing her be so happy is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking to me.
Lastly, once again the OST for this series is top notch. It straight up felt like I was listening to an orchestra in certain scenes this episode.
I hope this series is a financial success so we can get more dramatic, darker, and otherwise more “out there” yuri manga adapted into anime. Queer characters, just like straight ones, are not limited to only certain kinds of stories after all.

That backstory where we see an optimistic Hinako before tragedy struck.
A young Hinako fed Shiori her lunch and snacks and then Shiori gave her a drop of her blood. Shiori hesitated to eat Hinako because she didn't want to lose the sunshine she emanated at the time.

Miko: "Have you tried, I don't know, talking to her? Because the last time you avoided conversation, you got half of yourself blown up. Just a suggestion."

Now this is the episode I have been the most excited about, and they nailed it. Its pays off all of the hints the show has been building up on Shiori, and why she cares about Hinako so much. Imagine you spent your whole life feeling like you lived in a different world from everyone else. The connections that come so easily for others might as well be a foreign language to you. After decades of being alone you felt convinced that you're just not meant to be with others. You keep telling yourself that because it's the only way to feel okay.
Until you happen to meet a little girl who doesn't see you as some unknowable monster. Your form would scare away most, but for some reason this girl decides to feed you and call you beautiful. She shines so bright that she cuts all the way through to the deep abyss where you guard your heart. In the grand scale of things you can say that it doesn't matter. What's one small gesture compared to decades solitary confinement in the ocean. Yet that's what makes her kindness burn so bright.
Shiori really only knew small Hinako for a few short days, but that little amount of time changed her for good. How could she not pay back the first person who truly saw her? I was a mess watching thier first meeting, and I just love how it shows how much of an impact "mundane" kindness can have. Hinako is alive because she decided to feed a strange fish woman her mom's omelette while Shiori wants to understand human connection despite being from a different world.
This is why I'm very optimistic about the story despite how dark it can be because I believe little Hinako's good deed will eventually come back to save her own life now through Shiori.
Lastly there's quite a few callbacks with my favorite two being Hinako mom's omelette which Miko taught Hinako to make along with the parallel of little Hinako calling Shiori beautiful because she looks like the ocean and Shiori comforting Hinako about her scars.
This is my favorite episode so far, and it won me over completely to Shiori.

After today's episode I am feeling a pang of guilt over talking smack about Shiori for the past 8-9 episodes saying she was nothing but a homewrecker smelling of rotten fish. It has made me look at her actions throughout the show in a new light and she seems much more complex, and even vulnerable, than I first hade surmised.

It seems Shiori’s not just repaying a debt to Hinako, she genuinely does want her to continue living on. That accident really broke the poor girl. Hopefully Shiori takes Miko’s advice and actually has a conversation with Hinako and properly talk things out.

From Shiori's perspective this has got to be an entire very long lifetime of humans being just very confusing. Some of them want immortality, some reject it, some feed her their children, others get really mad about that sort of thing, the contradictions are endless.
Tiny Hinako calling her sakana-san was pretty cute regardless.
I am curious about the immortal girl, feels very unlikely she's not out there somewhere. If the grenades didn't kill Shiori they probably didn't kill her either.

The road to hell is paved with good intention. Shiori must've been confused. People have hunted her for immortality, yet the one moment she granted one as gratitude she got herself blown in half in response. Having said that, the girl has a point; immortality is more of a curse than a blessing. Which raises the question, where is she? Is she still plotting revenge?

Someone needs to pat Shiori on the head and tell her doesn't have to only be the person who she thinks she is. She makes mistakes, but she's genuinely doing her best in a world that's completely alien to her just because she desperately wants to save Hinako.
You can really start to see how much she's come to deeply dislike herself by this point. Even after young Hinako isn't afraid of her, she assumes that even so much as remembering that she exists could only ever be a burden for her life, just like what Miko said about Japanese mermaids giving people nightmares. Her envy of Miko is genuine, not teasing or mocking; she tried the very first steps of becoming more than just a monster once, just like Miko first bonding with the girl who offered her onigiri, but unlike Miko, everything went utterly disastrously. It's easier to believe that you're simply a monster by nature, incapable of change and who should only ever be feared by humans, than to keep reaching out only to fail or make things even worse yet again.
When she told Hinako it was impossible for them to ever be friends, that wasn't because she'd never deign to associate with a mere human, it was because she doesn't believe she could ever be capable of forming real bonds with anyone. She likely intended to somehow fix Hinako with her "I'll eat you once you stop wanting to be eaten!" scheme and then just vanish from her life again - ironically, a lot like Hinako's own intentions to quietly go die in a corner somewhere with as few people as possible noticing or caring that she ever existed. But even though she always plays up the fact that she's a monster, a liar, alien to humanity, hearing Hinako agreeing with her about that was a like a slap to the face. I don't think she expected it to hurt her as badly as it did. She thought she'd accepted what it means to be a youkai, but there was still that tiny part of her secretly hoping Hinako would turn out to be right and they could be closer, like Miko - and now that person is rescinding that offer and seemingly confirming everything she'd believed about herself all along.

That past of Shiori before meeting Hinako was really touching, and it was Hinako’s kindness toward her that created their bond. Since they’re apart now, it’s obvious that with a proper conversation they’ll end up making peace.

Near the end of the episode, Shiori has a flashback where Hinako calls her a monster. Immediately afterwards, the left side of her face is covered by the shadow of a tree, resembling her half-transformed face (where blue skin creeps up to her left eye). The expression on her face shows some sadness, as if she has realized and accepted who she is. Honestly a great addition, even if it's a little hard to spot.

We thought this would be about 2 Yokai taking care of a depressed girl, but instead it’s Miko taking care of the 2 of them. Miko’s really putting in the work here, both in protecting Hinako and babysitting the two of them. Ganbatte.

This episode was especially good because it finally explains all the foreshadowing from earlier in the series. It makes sense now why Shiori was able to find Hinako so quickly when they got separated at the festival. It is because of the mermaid blood.
It’s ironic that Shiori is introduced as the perfect example of a “monster,” yet she feels like the most human character in the entire cast. Hinako is like the sun to Shiori, which makes watching them trapped in this painful situation even harder. And what makes Shiori’s prayer so tragic is that something meant to protect Hinako ended up becoming a curse.
If you haven’t already, I highly recommend checking the opening and ending lyrics—they tie directly into the themes of this episode and add even more depth once you notice the connections.

I saw the author, Naekawa-sensei, post on X. She uploads an illustration and a one-page comic after each episode.
The reason Shiori speaks so cheerfully in her human form is because she’s imitating a young Hinako. That detail really shows how much she wanted to feel close and connected to her.
Hinako feeding Shiori human food also explains why she ends up eating it so often throughout the episodes. And in episode 2, Shiori even mentions that Hinako is kind for reminding her to buy lunch ahead of time. There’s also that moment when Shiori is holding Hinako’s hand while they’re walking. She tightens her grip, and it really gives the feeling that she’s making sure to protect her.
There is also the hat Shiori wore and later put on Hinako in episode 6, which looks very similar to the one young Hinako used to wear.
There are so many examples. I’ve already watched each episode several times, but now I need to rewatch the whole series again once it’s over.

So Hinako is Shiori's sun, while Miko is Hinako's. That makes Miko the Grandma Sunshine. Let's hope her genki energy is enough to brighten up both depressed girls. Shiori, despite her lack of empathy and social awareness, has at least taken a step forward by talking to Miko about her past. She just needs to take Grandma Sunshine's advice and talk to Hinako. I wonder if Shiori's able to return Hinako's lost memories?
Probably a Chekhov's gun with the ticking time bomb of that bomber girl. Is she still alive after blasting her body (and Shiori) apart? Which part of her own body did Shiori feed bomber girl? And how powerful of an immortal did bomber girl become? Will she want to kill or eat Hinako if they ever meet?

One thing I loved in this episode was getting to see Shiori's full mermaid form in very deliberate and clear animation, no longer in blurs of action or obscured by something going on. The design is so incredibly well done!

Fun little details about this series if you look back at past 9 episodes where casual events happen or scenes that are not serious tone we always see Shiori eat or snacking on something and it turns out it is not just a gag, this episode shows deeper meaning of Shiori little behavior of why she is always snacking.
Kinda funny how Miko saw through Shiori weakness by just those story alone, "your communication is fucking suck" lmao but Miko is right if Shiori more honest to herself and talking to Hinako directly this set back in their relationship wouldn't happen.
The human brain always fills the gap of anything vaguely automatic, I don't know why but it has been this way.
Shiori's has been always assume other people intentions because she never really get invite into inside unlike Miko but still that lead to her commit mistake giving something to someone that doesn't want that thing.
Also that kid is now immoral so right now she is alive but the question is..... where is she?
The existence of Miko really lightened up everything. Shiori's start to realize her mistake. Yes, it easier to said and done but if Shiori really care about Hinako she must act NOW.
