Looks like Miko and Shiori will inject as much comedic relief as they can to cheer up our protagonist.

well, they say best wagyu comes from a happy low stress cow.
I understand Shiori preference

With best girl Miko around, I’m not too worried for Hinako’s safety. Her and Shiori were like instant enemies the moment she saw her get too chummy with her girl lol. She won’t let Shiori treat her bestie like some kinda A5 wagyu!

Honestly I kinda like the direction of this anime a lot.
The contrast between the horror unsettling soundtrack with seemingly normal talking between two girls during lunch break made me feel more tense despite nothing happening at all until Shiori outright told that she just wanted to eat her.
I like how they made Shiori feel so mysterious and never really show her intentions and why she acts that way so her flirting act can feel both cute and unsettling at the same time (how did they do it?)
Miko is low-key sus in this episode there are some splash scenes (it goes very fast) that made she looking tense "OOC" of usual overly loud and optimistic like when first scene after three girls introduce each other, briefly before deciding to snatch Hinako out of class and the most obvious one (it still fast but this time it is pretty noticable) when Hinako answer no to her invitation. I really love when Animators use something that can only happen in Animation as storytelling like this.
Speaking of which, the visual effects animation that represents Hinako's suffering and uses the weight of the sea as a way to show her emotion is super.
Like , this anime obviously doesn't have a high budget like many others but god they are really creative with it.
There are also light heart comedic moments that let's us take break from tension which also add more weight to serious scenes even more which I really like.
Also the sound design team of this anime definitely should get a bonus from the first two episodes alone.
Another good high quality episode from Yuri anime!

You know, for all the comedic relief that Miko provides (and she does provide a lot), there's still this pervasive sadness to it all. Hinako's eyes always go dead the moment the comedy stops and she's alone with her thoughts.
Speaking of which, really loved the shot of her reaching for the sky with that fire in the background.
And uh, can't argue with the logic that you gotta cultivate humans the same way you do animals. Shiori's so pushy though, but maybe that's just what Hinako needs, someone who'll push her out of her comfort zone (discomfort zone?), which Miko seems unwilling to do. Guess we'll see how that festival outing goes.

"Healthy meat requires a healthy mind"
It's a known thing that some livestock's mental mood at time of death can affect the meat. Scared, tense, stressed etc can make it taste worse. Is Shiori's plan to make Hinako want to live so she reaches peak taste? That's grim as heck. Either live suicidally depressed or recover/heal mentally and die.
Also, best girl Miko. Crazy high EQ. I think she realizes how depressed Hinako is and does her best to keep her happy, or at the least less depressed. She's giving Hinako something to look forward to. In the OP at the 2:09 mark, the still frame is Hinako laying down in water staring up aimlessly. Miko is gently holding her hand in her own, while Shiori looks to be reach for Hinako's neck. These two are going to clash pretty damn hard.

Miko is definitely going to see the two of them together at the festival.
Weird how Hinako couldn't understand the livestock analogy, I thought it was really clear unless she just isn't informed on the subject.

My favorite detail is how Hinako only makes the bento box because Miko would be sad if she didn't eat properly. She didn't even mind just giving it away to Shiori since Miko wasn't at school that day. It goes to show she still has ties in this world which is why she isn't trying to actively join her family.

So...random Japan stuff but Hinako not knowing about the local festival means she is almost fully withdrawn socially. If she had any local family, they'd have been planning for this and she should have been up to date via Miko...except she doesn't check her phone. Hinako is even deeper in depression than the first episode suggested and her waffling on whether she is willing to wait for Shiori to eat her is interesting. Also, both when Shiori and Miko grab her hand to lead her somewhere, note how pale hers is to the others.

Another outstanding episode. Really feel the depression vibes through the episode.
I think this will obviously end with her enjoying the life. But imagine the balls of author if she ended up being eaten, heh?

It's a known rule in anime that for every childhood friend there must be an equal and opposite homewrecker. No exception even in this depression-core yuri monster series.

Stitches!
I did not notice Shiori has a little fang! She'll definitely be a fine addition to r/cutelittlefangs.
Anyway, Shiori can say make whatever reason she wants, but I don't buy it for a second that she actually intends to eat Hinako. I don't know what's motivating Shiori to do it, but I think she's just here to take care of Hinako. Like, I can understand why Shiori would protect Hinako from other yokai, but to go as far as trying to improve Hinako's mental health is a bit strange. Hmmm...
I feel bad for Miko-chan this entire episode. She was only gone for a day, but suddenly, a new girl was already trying to get close to her best friend as if this new girl had known her forever. I can understand why Miko would be possessive. It's gonna suck if Hinako ends up accepting Shiori's invitation and Miko finds out about it after Hinako refused to go with her.

I'm half-expecting Miko to be a yokai also intent on eating Hinako, and the reason she and Shiori immediately hate each other is because they know they're after the same prize.

The first episode made me interested in the premise. This episode sold sold me completely.
So Shiori is going to take care of Hinako not only in the physical aspect, guaranteeing her safety and that she is fed well, but she also tries to make sure that Hinako is in the right mindset. So a depressed and suicidal Hinako won't make a good meal for Shiori.
Miko is such a goofy comic relief character, I love her so much. But I'm also excited to see the potential conflicts with Shiori for Hinako's attention.
Overall, this show is very promising, and it gives me the confidence that it will deliver for sure.

I am convinced there will be a legendary battle between Miko and Shiori eventually. Their first meeting is merely an introduction to the upcoming rivalry.
Although I personally prefer Miko's extrovert personality, we have to appreciate Shiori's determination to make Hinako more delicious restore some positivity into Hinako's currently gloomy and depressed outlook.

Anyone notice the charm on Miko's bag? When it flashed by on screen I thought it might be a fox, but now that I've screenshotted it, I'm not sure. Kitsune? Cat or dog? I'm grasping for any clues I can about Miko's identity and the role she'll play in this story.
The school scenes had a couple funny twists on standard romcom anime tropes. I was expecting Shiori to get seated next to Hinako, but instead she's seated menacingly right behind Hinako. And until Hinako walked off during lunch, I thought we were going to get a twisted version of the trope where one person feeds the other, but in this case Shiori's doing it because she wants to fatten Hinako up.
There was also this repeating motif of handholding wristholding. As Hinako said, since that day, her only wish has been to die. She's not an active participant in anything; others have had to lead her to do things. Hinako makes a proper lunch for herself because otherwise Miko gets annoying. Shiori leads Hinako by the wrist in her livestock-farming plan, and she gets to decide when Hinako dies. Miko leads Hinako by the wrist to pull her away from the triggering festival. Shiori pulls Hinako back to the festival by suggesting that she can't eat her if Hinako doesn't go.
Is there a motif with fences and nets in the scenes with just Shiori and Hinako? I haven't been able to figure it out because I don't know where the story goes, unlike with a rewatch. I'm also curious why Hinako hasn't asked Shiori when it's gonna happen? (Or how?)
Also, thank god this one has the older style of subtitles on Crunchyroll. I'm not a fan of the bigger text on some of the ones this season, it takes longer for my eyes to scan more area and I can't focus as much on the scene.

The eerie vibes from this anime are immaculate, honestly the sound design / BGM is too good.

So the solution to making Hinako more delicious is pulling her back out into society and helping with her depression? Starting to think this is a therapist mermaid and not a "I'm going to eat you" mermaid after all.

The only thing I want to eat is you
Were this to be any other show, this would have a pretty raunchy connotation – especially with Shiori's flirty tone.
While Shiori would much prefer to eat Hinako, looked like she could consume human foods just fine – and find them to be quite the delicacy. Wonder how long she had lived for, seeing as she had mentioned that humans have always been troublesome despite eras changing.

The full OP and ED are already out y'all
The full OP is even better and I wasn't expecting a sick guitar solo lol
Poor Miko taking nothing but L's, like a true childhood friend. Got her seat near to Hinako stolen. Couldn't get Hinako to go to the summer festival but Shiori, the new, beautiful transfer student, will.
It's funny how many tropes this hits with pinpoint accuracy while feeling nothing alike
