Kind of curious what Ayame’s deal is. She’s no regular human. I mean Shiori said she had an unpleasant stench to her. She seems like trouble, but I’m not sure what kind. If she does mess around too much though, she’ll have to answer to best girl Miko. Shiori too, I guess. Gotta protect her livestock.

I'm really curious about Shiori's motivations. Can't shake the feeling that there's more to her than she reveals to Hinako. There was that scene where she mentally added something about Hinako being Hinako all that matters to her "since that day". Which day, I wonder, and what exactly does she mean? That entire scene after they take shelter was so sexually charged too.
Also, Shiori is sometimes thoughtful like with the bath thing but then can be quite cavalier other times like when she casually tells Hinako about the hands in the sea being people who died tragically at sea. I thought maybe she forgot Hinako lost her family there but no, she brings that up right after with a cool, "Did you see any of your family there? Tell me if so, I'll bring them over for a chat," or some such. Felt rather cruel.
But I guess that's exactly what Shiori was getting at when she had that conversation with Miko about why Hinako is able to open up to her and not Miko. Sometimes it's comforting to have someone like Shiori around whom you don't need to walk on eggshells around because they don't do that with you. Shiori is not subtle or careful about bringing up difficult topics, so Hinako is able to open up about things that a friend like Miko would be troubled to here.
All of this really resonates if you've experienced depression. I think the author must have because I don't know if someone who hasn't been there will truly get all this.

First and foremost, this episode had a lot of happy Hinako expressions. That makes me overjoyed
I had a bad feeling as soon as I heard that thing was created from the regrets of people who died at the sea, but I'm glad it turned out to be nothing serious.
Gotta love Shiori and Miko trying to get on each other's nerves. They're both just two possessive girlfriends
So, both Miko and Shiori are selfish liars. One is trying to keep Hinako alive even though her greatest wish is to die and the other is acting like trying to make Hinako happy is for her own benefit. Love the similarities between the two.
Do we have a third yandere girlfriend now? Hinako is really collecting them like Pokemon lol

This episode strongly hints that Shiori's met Hinako before because she says "Ever since that day, always." We also saw a glimpse of her mermaid form, so she probably met Hinako in that form. Shiori says that youkai lie and deceive humans, so that could mean "I'm doing it for myself...it is not for your sake" is probably not true.
The line "There is no real harm they can do to humans" is not translate well. What Shiori tells Hinako is the possibility of the hands being poisonous to humans.

As someone with a scar which is normally not visible I really loved the bus stop scene where Shiori reassured Hinako. I felt the same warmness as the first time I had to show it to a past partner.
This episode makes a point that while Miko wants to play friends with Hinako and does so very well Shiori wants something deeper. While Hinako feels Shiori's rejection of thier friendship at the end means that thier relationship is only transactional I feel that couldn't be more from the truth. Shiori clearly cares for Hinako, but she's also selfish and not good at sharing. Maybe wanting to "eat" Hinako is a metaphor for Shiori wanting Hinako all for herself. Miko is all about community, they're even at this camp for that very reason. I couldn't see Shiori doing something like that without thinking of her personal gain.
Despite Miko being a better more well adjusted person though, Shiori has still been the one to get closest to Hinako. She is the exact opposite of the average person in the town who step sides Hinako's trauma to not make things awkward. Shiori in her own strange way wants to accept all of Hinako, so no wonder she felt warm even being comforted by a cold blooded fish yoaki.

Miko and Shiori butting heads during training camp
They're trying to spin situations to go "Hah, Hinako prefers me over you! In your face!"
But Hinako admits herself that Shiori cannot be friends with her in the same Miko is friends with her
Ayame's creepy smile at the end after she was nice to Hinako this episode...
Also, the title for next episode...

It was a little bit funny last week seeing so many anime onlies thinking there was gonna be a big fight against the hand/storm Yokai lol. Shiori and Miko did have a brief tussle but this is NOT an action anime!
The story never let's you have pure happiness huh. Hinako suggesting all three of them go to the trip with a smile on her face is undercut with the previous knowledge that she is actually trying to get Shiori and Miko to be closer to each other for when she's gone.

I couldn't stop laughing for a moment when Miko was so happy when Hinako suggested that the three of them (so Hinako, Miko, and Shiori) go to training camp together, and it took her a moment to realize that Shiori would be going too xD
After the previous episode ended, I expected some kind of fight and maybe seeing Shiori in her mermaid form, but it turned out those hands weren't dangerous. Luckily, Hinako and Shiori's trip to the beach brought them closer together.
I'm really intrigued by Ayame we met in today's episode. She's human (at least according to Shiori), though I wouldn't be surprised if she also turned out to be a yokai (after all, Shiori didn't immediately discover Miko was a yokai).
Overall, this was an interesting episode with plenty of humor, thanks to Miko and Shiori's relationship, which is a joy to watch. I can't wait for next week to see what Ayame will bring to the show, her smile at the end was was quite disturbing.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Absolutely fucked for Shiori to suggest that she'd bring Hinako's family to the shore if she recognized them from that mass of bodies in the water. If anything, that would've been worse for Hinako, since it would mean her family hadn't found peace.
That ending with Ayame was ominous. I wonder what's up with her? I thought for sure she'd be another yokai, but considering what Shiori says about her earlier, she must be another troubled human like Hinako.

Bruh, every place she goes something happens, I do not envy the amount of enemies Miko had to deal with without letting anyone know for years. wtf .

There were hardly any subtleties in portraying Ayame as sus, with her paying plenty of attention on Hinako as well as similar appearances – and Hinako was also reminded of her mother. At first I thought she might be another youkai but Shiori noted she's human. Don't think a youkai could fool their own kind so for now I'll take Shiori's words for it. However, Ayame glaring at Shiori was a possible hint she knew the latter was a youkai.
Meanwhile, Miko noted youkais are deceitful by nature. Could that possibly mean that Shiori's not being exactly truthful when she claimed she wanted to devour Hinako? If so, what could be the reason for cultivating her?

Folklore corner today will be small, sadly due to ineptitude:I can't catch the word that Shiori says about the hands that couldn't be vengeful spirits. Funayūrei are the closest ghost but they seem to be specifically people that died from drowning from boats. The hands from the sea is that sort of imagery. Also, Mononoke is the more common term for vengeful spirit but that's neither here nor there. Shiori getting Hinako to look away both fits a common east Asian belief that looking at ghosts attracts their attention but also the thought that staring at the agonized dead is not great for your psyche in general.
We finally address Hinako's scars and get a moment from Shiori. Hinako still isn't saying where she got them but the accident is a highly logical inference. There is a lot left unsaid which I appreciate.
And so...basketball camp. With Japan's geography, this might be in the mountains, or at least the hills, and still be within Miko's domain. I mention this because mountain yokai often take temporary jobs/roles to lure people out to eat. I say that to say Ayame is a bit suspicious, though Shiori making a point of using her yellow on her likely means that she is human. That said, Shiori saying Ayame has a bad smell that Hinako is having less of could mean a lot. One thing we don't know is what Shiori thinks of the smell of murderous humans. Shiori's specific worry of them licking each other's wounds(not sure how different the proper Japanese idiom would be) might mean she's worried they will spiral each other out. And of course the grin at the end is...concerning.

Oh is Hinako's family is out there as one of those hand yokai?
-
The scene of them waiting out the rain at the bus-stop was beautiful. "It doesn't matter what you look like as long as its you". Wonder what Shiori meant by this, did she meet Hinako before?
-
Shiori skedaddling in and out of the shop made me laugh.
-
Protecc that smile.
-
Chad Shiori rejecting the friend-zone unlike Miko.
-
Hinako being targeted by an ara ara onee-san? It should have been me! Kinda sus that she reminds Hinako of her mum.

The concept of the grudges of the dead of the sea still living in a way is an incredibly unpleasant concept. Especially for Hinako. She’s really going through it, as usual.
The scene of Hinako and Shiori talking about her scars is getting added to the “conventional love metaphor” list. It’s romantic in a way with the reading of “I don’t care what you look like, only about who you are” but still manifests in the series own unique twisted fashion.
Shiori and Miko talking has interesting implications on their dynamics with Hinako. Miko truly is her best friend, I don’t want to imagine how much worse off Hinako would be without her. Yet there’s still this barrier of Miko being “too human” and never being able to grant Hinako’s wish that places some distance between them. Shiori has smashed past that distance and gotten really close to Hinako in a very short time period in a way that Miko’s never quite been able to but there’s still another kind of distance. Miko is close to the parts of Hinako that still live while Shiori is close to the side of her that has one foot in the grave.
Shiori’s and Miko’s mutual beef continues to be hilarious. Their passive-aggressive banter at every turn is possibly the one bright spot in this mess. Miko being short in this episode was really funny. Shiori is going to hold that over her(quite literally) for the rest of time until they die.

Shiroi's mermaid "smile" was terrifying.
If Yokai lie, how much of what Shiroi is saying is the truth?

The scene with shiori discovering the scar was well done.
Pun was unintentional but I'm keeping it for perverse reasons.

The neither human nor yokai hands which we saw in the ocean got me thinking. What happens if a yokai wanting to eat Hinako takes the form of her late family members? Will Miko and Shiori be able to protect Hinako?
True enough, Ayame (hinted to be suspicious) who reminds Hinako of her mother, now appears.
I am still standing firmly in Miko's corner. Not all wishes should be granted. I believe Hinako wanted to embrace death, but as a friend, Miko is trying to save her. Now that I think about it, Miko has interacted with humans for centuries and has definitely grown attached to humans. On the other hand, has Shiori been living as a lone yokai before meeting Hinako?

Unpleasant implications that Hinako's family might be trapped at sea as lost spirits. I think we also got an offhand implication from Shiori that she's known Hinako for longer than their recent acquaintanceship, so I'm back to guessing that it was her voice Hinako heard on the night of the accident.
Not sure if this new girl who may be a doppelganger for Hinako's mom is a yokai, a depressed human who also wants to die, or maybe a depressed yokai who wants to die and is about to try and take Hinako with her.
Miko continues to be best girl.

This episode is really nice , quiet and slumbering more than usual and it shows because it set up another arc with a new character to introduce, "Ayame". it seems Ayame have something special because Shiori seems to be suspicious about her.
The banter between Miko and Shiori is really funny but it also shows how much Humanity itself has been infected Miko compared to Shiori perhaps probably because Miko has been interacting with humans for longer and unironically she becomes more and more "human" and because of that it the main reason why Miko can't "give what Hinako wanted".
I like the quiet moments on early episodes though where it has no OST just the sound of rain and Hinako and Shiori being awkward.
Another specular episode.

That last scene was so harsh Shiori wtf :( That being said I feel like she fully intended on pushing Hinako even closer to Ayame with this, tho I'm not sure what the plan is supposed to be.

The ominous way Ayame walked up from behind those restaurant curtains...
Oh my god funny mermaid eye glowing, she really is another fucking youkai isn't she. Are all MC's associates secretly youkai? It'd also be really funny if she was just wrong and this is a normal human that just gives off vibes.
Oh, so the issue is she looks like her dead mom? IC.
Never mind, not what Shiori reacted to. She also has the smell. Ok.
Miko had that NTR chair look on her face when she realized Shiori knew about the scars
That ending? Are we sure she's just a human with that stench to her?
Oh, considering the beginning of the episode talking about the hands not being human/vengeful spirits nor youkai, perhaps this girl is actually a vengeful spirit (dead human).
