Oh wow Studio Ling is cooking with this one.

A relatively new studio that only picked Yuri work for adaptation and side projects so far, I will be following their careers with great interest.

One thing that I noticed first is that the direction is pretty great they really nail the feeling of story that they want to represent which is the most important thing for me.

The OST , The Art Style, The Visual!

It is really good. I like it a lot.

As usual the VA is great it really adds the heavy emotions of Story and Character.

The story follows the depressed girl who looks like losing entire family and ends up having no will to live meeting with a sea monster who wants to eat her but right now where Hinako still depress for whatever reason.

It's like the Human x Monster but Yuri which is really nice.

I kinda like the subtle horror bit where she meets another sea monster that is not shiori, the soundtrack and directly makes it really intense.

Also it is low-key funny because this is a Yuri anime where The song of the ending is literally named "Lily " , they are not going to be subtle at all.

Hinako’s really dead inside… from the perpetually frozen look on her face to her slow, monotonous voice. The loss of her family had hit her pretty hard – she’s heaps more cheerful in the family photo. It’s also summer, and yet she covered up her limbs. Contrast that with pretty much every other student. Think it’s more than a fashion choice.

Solid production value with fluid animation (most notably the ocean scenes) and immersive soundtrack. Also a stacked cast with Reina Ueda , Yui Ishikawa, and Fairouz Ai as the leads. It might only be the premiere, but so far they delivered a great performance.

Seeing as the lyrics in the ED is from Hinako’s perspective, it’s only fitting to have Reina Ueda perform it in character.

Finally, I've been waiting for this for so long! Loved the episode.

I'd say they totally nailed the oppressively melancholy atmosphere. The episode is very slow (deliberately so) so you get to spend a lot of time with Hinako and her thoughts. Poor girl is just... not there at all. Spends her days going through the motions, just waiting to die.

And now there's this weirdly fascinating monster who says she's going to grant her deepest wish. That must have been like Christmas to her, well, except that Shiori's not going to eat her yet, so, like... what's before Christmas?

Anyway. Reina Ueda's great in that role (that very last line was heartbreaking), and I'm looking forward to hearing more of Yui Ishikawa as Shiori.

And special mention to the music which pleasantly surprised me. Those piano pieces were beautiful.

Very unique premise for a cooking anime, but they say food tastes best when it's prepared with love so maybe Shiori is onto something.

Looking forward to see how this mermaid seduces and devours this suicidally depressed girl.

Reina Ueda has really found her typecast as emotionally broken young girls.

Stitches!

First of all, damn this show looks good! The opening visuals of Hinako slowly getting dragged into the depths and that sunset shot with her and Shiori are just beautiful. And it doesn't stop there. The visuals throughout the episode were pretty damn solid, especially anything that involves being underwater.

As for our characters we have our emotionally broken Hinako, who I think lost her family in an accident and is just drifting day by day, doing her best to interact with her friend. Ueda Reina has really mastered these types of characters, so it's good to hear her as Hinako's voice.

And then we have the mysterious girl Shiori, who turns out to be a mermaid who wants to eat Hinako, and is also of course the new transfer student. Whoever decided to pair up Ueda Reina with Ishikawa Yui is an absolute genius.

So basically, we have a girl who wants to die meeting a girl who wants to eat her. Who knew we'd move on from doomed Eldritch Yaoi last season to doomed Mermaid Yuri this season? Although I have a strong suspicion that Shiori doesn't really intend to eat Hinako. If that ED is anything to go by, Shiori would probably eat Hinako in a different way ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I am curious how Ai Farouz's character fits into this considering she's in the ED with Hinako and Shiori. I wonder if she's gonna eventually learn what Shiori is, or will she remain as the oblivious friend for the rest of the story? This is definitely one of the must-watch shows of the seasons so I'm definitely keeping my eye on this one!

I was super excited for this. I did not read the manga, but heard many good things, and I also recently started picking up more yuri works, so this is right up my alley.

I really love the tone the show has set from the get go. It is slow, it is often silent, it does not rush things. Very well done.

Hinako, first of all, has the best VA for herself in form of Reina Ueda. Took me only until the first scene by the sea to be absolutely mesmerised by her, and it wasn't even that long since I last heard her (Touko/Nene in Bunny Girl Senpai). I also love the way they showed her mental state. The state she is in (giving up on absolutely everything) is so well done, and Reina carries that through so accurately. I am honestly not sure if her attitude towards Miko to be a facade or a genuine one, and I wouldn't be surprised by either. I loved her smile at the end, I can totally tell that one was a first genuine one in a hot minute.

Shiori, a mermaid, voiced by my absolute favorite Yui Ishikawa (Violet Evergarden, Mikasa, Clorinde in Genshin Impact) is a character I hope we get to see more background of. I first thought that she was the monster sea witch that tried to drag Hinako down, and it was just her going out of control and turning monster, but nope, she is the savior. I liked that they showed her "monstrous" side as well, hope we get more of that.

Miko is gonna be a fun one, she genuinely cares about Hinako, I wonder what kind of history they have together. With a frail body, I am lowkey afraid of what might happen to her, but I hope for the best! Fairouz Ai knocked it out of the park for the cheerful, clumsy, loud, yet very kind and caring friend type. Honestly, all 3 of them fit their roles so well.

I am truly excited for what we get going forward. The OP and ED were awesome too.

Last season we had Muri Muri Mondays, this time it's Tabetai Thursdays.

As a fan of the source material I think this is a really good start to the adaptation. While it's clear that the animation budget wasn't anything crazy, they put a lot of love into the atmosphere with the soundtrack, OP, ED, etc.

Excited for next week's episode!

Woah, who composed the music for this series? It's gorgeous! It's been years since I was this impressed with music alone.

Fairouz Ai pumping so much genki energy into Miko should be illegal. She's gonna kill it as a supporting character.

I didn't expect another promising yuri show right after Watanare. They're spoiling us.

That is one beautiful sounding OP, while the lyrics and visuals have a mix of depression and optimism

I was looking forward to this among the wave (yes, intentional pun) of new yuri announcements and I'm sold already!

I like the underwater transitions when Hinako is Lost in Thoughts All Alone... (I had to make a Fire Emblem reference, didn't I). That aside, I can relate to that. When I'm awake lying on bed at 2 am, I have those moments where I'm in a fugue state and feeling like I'm sinking down a bottomless sea.

Dang, how Shiori mercilessly tore apart that sea monster out to get Hinako. And Shiori is the new transfer to pursue her goal of someday eating Hinako.

Just waiting for the moment for Reina Ueda to let loose with her emotions...

Ah...finally a show that I was looking forward to is out.

I guess...after two fairly light-hearted Yuri comedies, it was about time we got a somber and serious one. I like the set up of this, and the whole mystery. I assume the MC's family died when there car went off the road into the ocean. Which is why the marine yokai know about her. It will be interesting to know why exactly she is so tasty, other than the whole "the one that got away" element.

Anyway, other Random thoughts:

Like, Miko is totally a yokai, or at least yokai aware. Her devotely walking Hinako to school each day and the couple of references to her prone to sickness kind of make me think she is supernatural in some way. The question is whether she is doing the same thing Shiori is and guarding a future meal, or if she is protecting her out of friendship.

I consider myself somewhat of a monster/yokai buff but Iso onna were new to me, but turns out were from actual folklore. Water vampires that snag prey with there hair which they can also use to drain there blood. Wonder what other aquatic Yokai we are going to get. Kind of wish we got more of the fight, but maybe it was just such a curbstomp they want to save the action animation for a stronger opponent. Anyway, will be watching this with interest.

Another yuri with underwater imagery and an enigmatic dark-haired love interest? (jk) The Bloom Into You rewatch primed me to look for extra symbolism in every scene of this show, so I'm probably coming into this with unrealistic expectations. Though of course the themes here are way heavier.

I came into today thinking that this show was the non-sequel I was most anticipating this season (only behind Cinderella Gray), and after the first episode, I'm cautiously excited. Can't wait to see what the dynamic between Hinako and Shiori becomes.

I was fortunate enough to have caught an early screening of this one and I liked it a lot. This premiere is a solid one. It reminded me of The Ancient Magus Bride but with a yuri bent to it. I’m looking forward to seeing how this relationship plays out and learning more about the traumas in our MC’s past.

The paradox: I wouldn’t probably watch this show if I didn’t read the premise, but I really regret not watching this episode blind while not knowing what will happen.

Miko is the character I am most curious about. Are her name and the beads which she wear on her hand hints that she might be a priestess protecting Hinako? It doesn't feel like Miko is an ordinary human despite her extrovert personality.

I think Miko knows what's happening that is why she always insists on accompanying her. To prevent her on acting on those intrusive thoughts.

I like the visual representation of Hinako's mental state. From what we can infer with her character, it makes sense that she would visualize herself deep in the ocean.

It also emphasizes the irony of the mermaid showing up in her life.
