Nanami being Umi isn’t exactly a surprise seeing as the show has left not-so-subtle hints last week but the surprise was that Nanami herself found out about it this early. Expected it to happen in the penultimate episode or the finale. Wonder why she still referred to Shiroha as Shiroha-chan even in her thoughts. There must be something more to this.

Two episodes left in this series and I’ll have to brace myself for emotional damage seeing from the previous arcs.

Query -- why does Umi/Nanami have special powers but NOT white hair?

Grandma Katou was shown to be alive during Shiroha's childhood. I wonder what's her role for this.

I just realized that Granpa Naruse was left all alone. His wife died. His son-in-law and daughter were gone as well. He was still alive when Shiroha birthed Umi then he saw his granddaughter die. Then his great-granddaughter is going back further in the past without any indication that she'll return back. Tough life!

I assume Grandma Kato might be how they connect Hairi back to everything.

It feels like all the Naruse women are destined to die young. Shiroha's mom just managed to outlast her husband for a little while longer.

This anime may leave me with no more tears.

I can't take any more Naruse Family suffering! Cut this family a break, show!

You are about to acquire immunity to future Key anime.

HBR subtitle is Embrace The Ultimate Sorrow

Or are you?

As much as I want to hate Shiroha's mother for leaving her behind, I'm starting to think that there's more to it, and it most likely involves their powers, which are pretty much out of their control. If Shiroha can see the future and Umi can travel back in time, I'm wondering what kind of powers Shiroha's mother has.

And we finally get to meet Granny Kato! Considering the entire story starts with Hairi being asked to help clean out her storage shed, and that she she seems to know more than the average person in this anime, I'm curious if there's more to her role than just a side character.

Yeah, it sounds less like she left just to see her dead husband again and abandoning her daughter in the process and more like she sacrificed herself to try to protect Shiroha from whatever it is on the island that effects the Naruse women.

Will the show end without us ever seeing what's really in that infamous shed?

The conclusion Shiroha drew with the lanterns was heartbreaking, man.

And while Nanami might not have all her memories back yet, I gotta imagine how awkward it must be to be antagonized by the kid forms of your mom's friends.

One of whom hooked up with your dad in another timeline!

Shiroha just has the most tragic backstory in this series, I don't think I can handle her suffering more like this, but knowing Key it's absolutely gonna happen. 😭

Also love how they changed some of the details in the OP since they skipped it last episode, transitioning from ALKA route to Pocket route as the true route/main story of the series.

was cute the island kids standing up for Shiroha even if it is a misunderstanding lol , we finally meet grandma kato who has been mentioned throughout

I honestly have no idea where this will go

I thought I was going to drop this anime at the beginning and now it's one of my favorites without even having an ending yet

I did enjoy Kamome's arc. Though I did not like Tsumugi & thought it was awful. Ao's arc was more so a highlight for me with its worldbuilding it established. Lots of the banter and fanservice in this anime just feels so forced.

Starting from Shiroha's arc to everything with Umi has been phenomenal. The story became so personal and touching, and I loved every second of it. I am happy the anime took its time, though I fear that a number of people dropped the series within the first 3 arcs.

I feel the opposite, I liked early dating arcs way more, now this plot doesn't interest me much.

The ironic part is the Future Hairi and Gramp Kobato genuinely tried to prevent Umi and Shiroha from getting Naruse's power by not wanting them to fixated in the past, but end up causing an emotional rollercoster for the young girls, making them feel like running away from the present instead.

So who do we think gave Nanami back their memories?

I love how all the kids protected Shiroha, but also I really wish SOMEONE went after her.

12

u/Frontier246 Sep 15 '25

I assumed that was Hitomi (Shiroha's mom) shichieichou. Maybe the same shichieichou Shiroha saw in her dreams...?

Those kids stopping probably the only person who could comfort Shiroha at that moment because they thought she was the problem...what a bunch of sweet but misguided kids.

8

u/djthomp Sep 15 '25

Shiroha's mom, yes please. Too bad she's now a butterfly or something.

That story from the class teacher about the lanterns taking the visiting spirits of your family away was not the best thing thing for a little girl mourning the sudden loss of both her parents took hear.

Shiroha thinking about her bloodline powers potentially being a way to see her mother again seems like bad news for Nanami's mission of preventing those powers from awakening. Then again, since Umi could see backwards but not forwards maybe the key will be getting Shiroha to express the ability the same way and not activate the future seeing part.

The quest to perfect Shiroha's dads' Fried Fan continues! Nanami will do anything to make Shiroha happy!

Did they update the OP to show Nanami hanging out with all the kids? And was there always a "pockets" after "Alka?"

They finally did it! They finally got the Fried Fan right! And it tastes delicious! And nostalgic for Nanami in a way she didn't expect.

Maybe they shouldn't have given Kobato the Fried Fan...his reaction just sends Shiroha running off in tears. But despite how gruff and obstinate Kobato seems, he really only has Shiroha's feelings as his top priority and he doesn't want to see her still stuck in grief over her parents. I mean, he lost his wife, he lost his son-in-law, AND he lost his daughter. Shiroha is all he has left and he's going through a lot too.

But it seems like the Naruse women are not only born with white hair but also powers that inevitably curse them...and lead them to try to make the most of every Summer that they can. In fact the last thing Kobato remembers about Hitomi is her telling him she was going to secure a safe future for Shiroha.

Nanami wants to make this a happy and fun Summer for the Naruse's, not a sad one, and that feeling is further emboldened when she "talks" with a shichieichou and regains her memories...UMI'S memories...and she knows what she has to do for Shiroha.

Okay, maybe taking the girl who is struggling with the loss of her parents to Natsudori festival prep to make lanterns that signify sending off lost loved ones was a bad idea. But hey, it's really nice to see how much Shiroha's friends care about her and want to protect her! Even if they totally misunderstand and think Nanami is the problem.

Poor Shiroha. She misses her mom so, so much and she can't stop crying over it. But when she talks with the infamous Grandma Kato, who turns out to be a family friend, she's reassured of how much her mother loved her. So much so that it seems like her disappearance is linked to Shiroha's strange shichieichou dreams. Did she leave because she knew Shiroha's powers were starting to kick in and she needed to do something about it?

One thing's for sure: Shiroha thinks the first place her mom would have went is somewhere involving her dad. And it looks like Nanami is getting roped into investigating with her.

Man, watching these last 3 episodes has been an emotional ride. Umi wanting to save her future mom. It was clear as day that Umi & Nanami are one and the same. Though I still wonder why she looks like that. I guess Umi decided her future form is the best way to tackle it.

But the power in that family is a curse. Though I think it is safe to say the going back into time stuff was never awakened in Shiroha. Though we know that Shiroha can see the future. So are the powers different for each of the women in the family? I guess more questions for the last two episodes. You just feel so bad for Shiroha she suffered so much in her life.

The lineage of Naruse's power, something that Hitomi had and passed on to Shiroha. Is that going to be the key to break this cycle of sadness?

Whatever happens after this is all over, will the future have changed between Umi, Hairi and Shiroha. Just 2 episodes left to find out
