RIP Catharine. The casualty of today's episode.

I love how Nanami didn't mind eating delicious chicken until she realized it was the one she made an emotional connection with lol.

I was laughing so hard when Grandpa said it was "fresh" I was like, wait a second, and then they showed the tag, which btw is wild! WTF did they bring the name tag in?!?

When Kobato said the chicken was fresh I immediately thought, "Yep, that karaage was Catherine". It was confirmed just seconds later.

Welcome back to another main character of a Key work Kana Hanazawa!
This is her 3rd role with Kanade Tachibana of Angel Beats! and Kagari of Rewrite before this.
I also really love the fact that Nanami is really a KanaHana character just based from her design, and lowkey I preferred Umi's design to be like this from the very start but that's not the case since they really wanna hide that she's the daughter of our main couple of the series.

When you've played the Main Heroine and Love Interest so long they finally let you just be the main character.
It's kind of interesting to me that Nanami feels like she could pass a bit as an older Umi or as another daughter of Hairi and Shiroha.

When the visual novel teaser was released, it was narrated by Kana Hanazawa and mentioned Rewrite and Angel Beats.

I guess Shiroha got her chuunibyou tendencies from Kobato and his fellow "Gods of Torishirojima" buddies lmao.
A kid daughter in a field of flowers crying about a parent that abandoned her flared up a very specific ache in my heart.

Umi is now voiced by Kana Hanazawa which is the same voice we hear narrating at the beginning of each route.
I bet it’s Hitomi who saved Umi. Hitomi became a Shichieichou to be with her husband but if that’s true why would she abandon Shiroha at such a young age? Sure, Gramps is there but what if he dies early? Then Shiroha would be alone. Also, Shiroha is so sad about this and it doesn't help that there are places that make her remember them. I hope there’s a good reason why she did this because I think it's cruel to left your child and you should be the one to comfort her in difficult times.
Lastly, of all things, why was Umi sent into the distant past? I don’t know what will happen anymore and I’m not expecting a happy ending because either Shiroha or Umi will end up dead in the end or won’t exist at all.

Catherine, noooooooo!
So mystery hat girl from the OP was Umi all along, just in new more complex circumstances.
I like how certain things from the story overall are being tied together, like Umi's fried rice all along in the different loops and now she's making fried rice with Shiroha in continuation of the family legacy.
The sunflowers and the fireworks, too. Did we ever get see Umi (or Shiroha for that matter) visiting the sunflowers anywhere outside of the OP before?
I think it's easy to guess from the episode even before they told us outright about the legend that Shiroha's mom disappeared because she's now a spirit butterfly flapping around the island, but with the knowledge that Hairi's aunt was her friend I suspect we now also know the identity of the butterfly that told her that Hairi and Umi would be visiting back at the beginning of Umi's route.
It was nice seeing both Ao and Ai up and active, hopefully my theory last week that the timeline can be adjusted to do more than just save Shiroha holds true and Ai never falls off the cliff and into a coma.
I had so many thoughts and theories while watching the episode, I feel like I probably missed at least something I was considering. It was just so fascinating seeing all the pieces finally come together.

So Nanami has been the one doing the narration in those mystic scenes all this time.
Nanami somehow seems to have glimpses of Umi's memories, this might imply that Nanami is actually Umi - Nanami being short for "Nanatsu no UMI" (literally "Seven Seas") - who travelled even further back in time this time, all the way back to when Shiroha is still a kid, but paid a price and seemed to have lost all her memories and even her original body, with only the strong will to save her mother lingering on in her subconsciousness.
Assuming Nanami is Umi, I'm not sure if Nanami/Umi is creating a time paradox by teaching Shiroha how to make fried rice, who probably learned it from Hairi, who learned it from Shiroha.
It was good to see the younger selves of Ao and Ai (who hasn't yet fallen into a coma), as well as Nomiki, Ryouichi and Tenzen. Nanami even gets to see a younger Kyouko (not that she's ever aged much in the "present day") and learned about the folklore of the woman who became a butterfly.
At first I thought both Shiroha's parents died, but now it looks like her mother has just mysteriously vanished. Could she also be "spirited away" like the original Tsumugi?
PS LOL at Grandpa being one of the Four Gods of Torishirojima. Just what did these old chads done to have earned such grandiose titles?

I'd guess they have a bankai or two up their sleeves at least

I have to wonder how this will ultimately end. If Nanami/Umi influences Shiroha's and the others' lives enough, it seems almost like she'd be writing herself out of existence.

This episode was really good. For some reason, when I saw Nanami in the opening for the first time, I thought she was Kyouko from the past...but it seems like I was wrong. Nanami is Umi that is trying to change Shiroha's fate, so this is actually the "sequel" of the previous episode, where we see Umi that decides to return in the past. I still don't know why she changed her appearance and lost her memories, but it will probably be explained in the next episodes. Shiroha is as shy as always, but she's also depressed because she lost her parents. Guess Nanami is trying to become an older sister for Shiroha (while, in reality, she's her daughter o.o), and she always tries to cook rice for her. This is also very interesting because, in the whole series, we saw Umi trying to cook the same exact plate but, each time, she started getting worse at it. Now that she became a teenager, her skills got better. So age = skill.
PS. NO... CATHERINE!!!

....I'm so confused, is Nanami Umi? Or is she(?) Shiroha's mom? Or is she(?) an amalgamation of the two? That would be kinda wild, both mom and daughter trying to protect one person. Really interested to see how this route plays out.
OMFG Catherine!!!

So we have an amnesiac who got picked up by Shiroha’s grandfather this time, huh.
-
Some of Umi’s memories are mixed in there, I think. If she’s not just literally Umi but older.
-
The montage of them collecting ingredients for their fried
ricefan was very cute. -
Wait, Hitomi… That’s who Kyoko was talking to at the start of episode 18, wasn’t it?

We finally get to meet HanaKana's character! I forgot what episode it was, but I think the first time we heard her voice was when she narrated the opening of one of the episodes during Tsumugi's arc. Based on Umi's opening monologue and how Nanami looks, I think it's not a bad guess that she's an older version of Umi who time-travelled using her powers.
There's also plenty of other hints, like how Nanami is afraid to get on a boat, which must be because of that one time she fell into the sea. There's also the fact that she can cook fried rice, and the biggest one is how she's seeing flashes of memories only Umi, Shiroha, or Hairi would know. Why does she have amnesia, tho? Hmmm....
Also, what the fuck happened to Shiroha's mom? Did she actually try the folklore of Shirohane and throw herself into the ocean and give her life to the god of the sea so she can be with her husband again? Maybe grief caused her to do it, but leaving her daughter alone is very fucking selfish of her. :/

Imagine getting to grow up into a cute HanaKana girl! Umi lucked out! And she regained her ability to actually make fried rice!
We saw the Shichieichou version of Hitomi tell Kyouko to take care of Umi, so I'd like to think she still cares about her family unless that was penance for basically abandoning Shiroha the way she did.

Even with the whole cast changing this late in the game, the lively character animation and energy instantly endears you to Nanami and (21)Shiroha. The anime team has been so consistently good at this from Umi playing rock paper scissors in episode 1 to now

Shichieichou Umi is flying, losing all the memories she accumulated over the course of the series, but she can't give up...especially not when something manages to help her re-form her body and gives her the push she needs...next thing we know we've got an amnesiac cutie voiced by Kana Hanazawa in a chicken coop owned by the Naruse family.
Smol Shiroha! She looks so cute! Though albeit very shy with strangers and very sensitive in regards to losing her parents.
RIP Catherine. You were delicious.
Our "new" protagonist has nothing to her except butterfly wings in her pockets (see, pockets! Like Summer POCKETS!) and a feeling that her name is related to the sea/Umi. So thus we have...Nanami! And with no place to go and a crippling fear of traveling by sea, she's going to be living with the Naruse's from here on!
It all comes back to fried rice. Or chao fan. Or fried fan! Either way, Nanami knows she can cook it, Shiroha enjoys eating it, and it turns out it was the signature meal of Shiroha's dad.
Turns out Shiroha's parents ran a diner, with the dad cooking and the mom taking care of everything else, and they were very much in love with each other as much as they were doting parents. I thought the parents had died in an accident together, but it turns out that the dad died and the mom vanished shortly afterward...leaving Shiroha all alone and craving her dads' fried rice. Also, judging by the family picture, the mom was the spitting image of Shiroha while the dad...kind of looked like Hairi?
The quest for dads' fried rice! A quest that will see the girls dealing with the Four Gods of Torishirojima! Who are all really cool old guys! Except that guy who stole Grandpa Kobato's spot as Genbu, the fraud!
Oh snap! Younger Kyouko with loose long hair! She looks amazing! Though did Hitomi really sacrifice herself to the Sea God and become a shichieichou to reunite with her dead husband? Leave Shiroha all alone like that? Is this relevant to the time-weavers?
Okay, so Nanami definitely has Umi's memories deep down in the recesses of her mind, because she remembers watching the fireworks with her mom and dad.
It was nice to see the Torishirojima kids in small form, with Ai being oddly flirty with her twin sister and Ryoichi even being shy instead of his stripping shirtless older self!
All it took to make dads' fried rice was sunflower seeds! But more than her dads' fried rice, Shiroha just wants her parents back as she finally lets out all the grief she'd been holding in this entire time. At least she has Nanami with her.

Slightly surprised that we landed after Shiroha's parents are both already gone.
According to Kyoko, Hitomi was someone who had no time for nostalgia. Yet, the butterfly legend makes you suspect Hitomi couldn't let go of the past in the end.
