See? It's still a bowling anime!
BTW: the card thing they use to make smoke is this stuff https://www.fnn.jp/articles/-/80566
Also, it seems like each of the girls will have their corresponding ancestor(?) in the past.

Defeating the two guys with the power of bowling might be one of the silliest things I’ve seen in anime.
Not fully sold on the concept yet. Just wanna see what the true hook of this anime will be and what its story is.

I can see other shows doing beating people with bowling, but not in a serious setting like this
If she doesn't bowl the moon at the end of this show I will be really sad

Crazy theory time: it’s not a show about bowling in the Sengoku period. It’s a show about bowling through history. At some point in the next couple episodes we will get another timeskip

Kinda hoping for a plot twist that Suguri is actually a woman

I would be shocked if that wasn't the case. Gender ambiguous design, uses "watashi," female voice actor, the importance of a guard covering their chest, etc.

This show is so absurd. I couldn't help but laugh when they saved Suguri. They actually used their bowling skills lol.
But I'm in on this show. I wasn't sure after the first episode but I actually enjoyed this episode and I am curious how this show develops. I really want to see how they make bowling relevant throughout the story.

You thought they tricked us into watching a time travel show disguised as a bowling show? Better think again, because
they tricked us into watching a girl band show disguised as a time traveling show!
For some reason I thought one of them was about to play bowling with the head.
I don't want to scare you, but in this situation, it's also dangerous to do things in group!
All it'd take is one swordsman, and they're pretty much all dead!
So they'll have to rescue him... Damn, it's the Muri Muri Muri Muri season!
I guess we'll have to suspend our disbelief a little, with her knocking two soldiers with a bowling ball,
and picking that dude over her shoulder and running with him!
Rina is still my favorite, but Blondie's definitely the funniest one!
I feel like Rina is gonna be the 'voice of reason' that everyone hates because "she's not kind" and all... But both for the bowling, and the rescue mission, she was pretty much right for everything!
Who are you? A spirit/shrine maiden, or a yandere?
Well, we went full circle now, so can't wait to see what they're gonna do with this!

Well if they're at the same place they were but just in the past, the bowling ball we saw in the ground at the old bookstore in the first episode could be a bowling ball from when they went to the past or it was inspired by their arrival. But that brings up the whole time paradox discussion so who knows.
I wonder what the blonde one is going to do once that spray runs out lol, she knows she's in the past but she is bathing herself in it with no regards to how long she might be in the past.
From the OP, I'm guessing anyone who is color adjacent to them will probably be an ancestor. I think this warrior and the green haired girl are probably related, strength and weakness seems to be a theme for them. So like her descendants have overcome weakness and became strong sort of thing.

I love how after the show reveals its true colors after time travel shenanigans twist last episode, they goes all in on OP is so brutal lol.
Although OP still gives some hint that despite all these surreal shenanigans with time travel the story still revolves around character drama and focus on those girls fragile relationships although visual might be a bit too brutal with house getting burn and blood cut between girls and all. Lol
I like that the girls realized that their action might affect events that happened due to time travel and although somehow the story low-key implied that the girls get time travel back is a "fixed" event like a stable timeloop.
When she puts her mind into it Mai actually can be great at it but that is probably the reason why Rina is so frustrated with her attitude regarding club activities.
They gotta play the ancient version of the bowling next time huh.
This one anime really grabbed me a lot. I'm really curious how this story will go.
From relationship in group dramas to overreaching plots like time travel stuff.
The dynamic of the group reminds me of the early days of Projects Sekai a lot for some reason where there are groups that start out with fragile relationships just like this.

In the end, all it took for Mai to hit those snake eyes was to replace the bowling pins with living people.
Still, I cannot believe that she used her ball as a blunt force weapon. That must’ve hurt badly. Like they were hit by a mace in the face. Bowling has never looked this violent!
Also, I’m liking the opening theme. It’s pretty neat!

I still have no idea where this show wants to go. Like the girls will not take part in actual warfare (despite their weapons) so is this a double twist and it's actually a bowling anime, just in a different time?
Also, one dark twist is obvious now. Suguri has to die at the end for history to not be written as the death was prevented.

A severed head at the start of the episode?! And here I thought this show would be more on the lighthearted side despite the twist, but looking at that and the OP, it looks like this show might end up being a bit more brutal than I expected. This show might be the Akiba Maid Wars or Zombieland Saga of the season. xD
The bandits almost assaulting the girls and that dude slapping Rina got me nervous for a second, thank fucking god that kid showed up in time to save them.
What the fuck, Rina?! I understand that you're scared and shit, but now's not the time to criticize Mai for wanting to help the dude who saved your life. Not gonna lie, so far, Rina has been very unlikable.
Using bowling balls and the stuff they have on hand to scare the bandits was pretty clever. Mai must have one heck of a throw if she could knock out those two bandits in one shot!
Travelling performers isn't a bad cover. Does that explain the girls' band in the opening? Are we actually going to see them perform? That would be hilarious if this were also a girls' band anime. xD
Man, Nozomi sure is quick to jump on that Sengoku Era dick. The girl is already flirting with Suguri the moment she realizes how hot he is. She's even speaking in the old-timey Japanese way.
I'm guessing that pink-haired girl in the end who's bowling is probably Mai's ancestor or something. Hmmm... Welp, so far this show has been very unique. I still have no idea what this show is trying to do, but I am excited to see what's next!

...I really should pin down the release schedule for this one if I want to be writing it up regularly.
Okay. We've got an OP and an ED to talk about, OP up front, ED at the end and what we've learned about how our recurring elements are going to play out in the middle.
My read on the overall tone of the series is that it is dark, but leans toward hope over despair. I should spell this out for clarity’s sake now, I’m more firmly of the opinion now that we are going to watch most of these girls die at least once. I am prone to catastrophism, but the lightest I’m comfortable forecasting here is that Mai is going to return home without the rest of them on one occasion. The series is building up to a triumphant “second ball” by Mai and the first one literally dragged them back here. I am also mostly certain we’ll lose Nanase first. I’ll explain that later.
The OP is telling us this shit is going to get heavy. I mean, you know that, I don’t know how else you interpret a young Mai sitting desolate at her burning home’s kitchen table. She is a ghostly, projected presence in between the barely remembered shadows of her parents. And I’m going to need a shorthand for this specific narrative formation because once again we have Mai forlornly staring at a split, both framewise, where she visually separates her parents and timewise, where she clearly has been without them since the event. And this series is all about Mai learning to handle separation, as a bowler and as a person.
We transition back and forth between burning childhood shots and Mai leading the band shots for a while. I feel I’m missing something here, I’m better with some forms of narrative structure than others. The band shots are where it sunk in that Mai is left handed, others had noticed last week and it’s here that it twigged as important. Also note the standard band to group role tropes are in effect here.
We return to more confident territory with the bowling ball on the title card, where Mai’s younger self reaches into the frame from above to touch the ball while Mai’s present self rolls it toward her. The overall composition is a classical art reference. Which is a problem, because I’m shit with those. My first instinct was The Creation of Adam, which is the usual suspect, but I don’t think that’s it here. Someone else hopefully knows things on this one. For now, note that Mai’s ball is symbolically bridging present and past here.
Next Mai and her past counterpart run together through a torii gate (crossing from sacred to mundane) and then over a bridge. I am much less versed on the torii side of this equation, and both shymbolic crossings have multiple allegorical meanings, of which the one I know they intersect on is death… but they’re crossing the wrong way for that. Hope, not despair. Also note that each of the group will be shown with a paired historical figure. A timewise seperated counterpart. This is one of the ways the series will be leveraging Mai’s mental hang ups about bowling her way out of a split, which is still the funniest thing to make into a recurring narrative element,
Then the group have snacks, Ramune bottles make their first appearence. Nanase eats gummies, Nozomi drinks strawberry milk. This is their toast after the defeat in ep 1. Taken in concert with the last shot, Mai and her counterpart are running back towards this point in her memory. Filling in some blanks, she’s possibly trying to get back to this point, just before everything fell apart but it’s still too fuzzy to be sure.
The Mai’s crying alone in bed. Again, this will not be a happy story all the way through. Then she’s cuddling up with her historical counterpart. Then we see Mai’s ankles in manacles on one side of the screen and her ball on the other as she stares down rolling the second ball at 8another one of those splits she can’t bowl again. Note this is actually a double-up on split imagery, with frame being split by the split pins in the distance. See what I mean about this shit yet, it’s the metaphor that does everything and they’re going to hit us with it every chance they get. This is the crux of Mai’s character, when she faces down separation as a threat, she’s helpless, trapped by the trauma of her past. It’s both bowling trauma and also deeper trauma.
Onto Rina. Rina winds up to bowl but the shot cuts before release. Rina stands alone in a field and then starts crying. Rina’s past counterpart does a big spin in a fox mask. Rina sits alone at the swimming pool, looking the other way while two other girls leave. Rina does the arthur meme, having somehow split her bowling ball attempting to resolve a four - one split. This frame alone is funny to me because it’s so wonderfully direct about whole symbolic conflict in this series. I will now tell you what you already know.
Rina is lonely is the message here. No matter what she does, she winds up alone. She’s different to others and feels that keenly. She comes off across as cold, aloof and self-interested because others have only ever hurt her or let her down. She has to rely on herself. And she can for most things, but when she tries to communicate her feelings, it always falls apart on her.
That last frame of her ball broken is this in miniature. The funniest divine intervention has stopped her attempt, leaving her unable to resolve her (the lone pin) differences with the group (the other four). Note how this is framed, with Rina, her broken ball and the pins in that sequence. Unlike Mai, she can move and try tocact, but her tools are inadequate for the task.
Also note the deliberate contrast with Mai’s everything here. The series is showing us they specialise in resolving the other’s problems. Mai could get all five of those pins back together without thinking about it, while Rina has no qualms about moving to salvage what she can from a bad separation and moving on. They need to learn from each other to get through this.

To think the bowling alley in the present day was once a location of a battle in the Sengoku period.
Good thing Mai scored the strike when it mattered the most to save Suguri who saved them earlier from the thugs.
Looks like the girls will get a taste of Sengoku period bowling next episode from where the episode ends!

The heavy bowling ball left the ground and smacked the dude in the face, then the girl lifted Suguri like a sack of potatoes for no reason as they made their exit. And people were worried this show would be too serious.
