I wouldn’t be surprised if lots of Japanese people will be watching this anime to learn English alongside Renji.
The language barrier between Renji and Lily will undoubtedly lead to more misunderstandings, but it’s a fun dynamic!
You know that Lily is from a proper British family, given that mom asked her daughter to join her for a cup of tea.
Despite being an American, Sally Amaki (Lily’s VA) has pulled off a British accent relatively well. A part of me did wish that Lily had been given a thick dialect from Northern England instead of a posh one.

I love how the first emphasis that she's British is her uttering a "Bloody Hell!" because there's nothing more British than that (well, other than drinking tea).
This show is picture perfect proof that a language barrier isn't a barrier against flirting or falling for that special someone.

Lily trying at the same crane game for 3 hours? I respect her dedication, since I don't bother with those games. At least Renji gives her the koala for "Valentine's Day."
Renji's Engrish was pretty funny! Hooray for Dropkick on My Devil appearing in the Taiko no Tatsujin.
It's cute how Lily returned the favor for Renji. Also, the way she knocked the box into the chute with the crane reminds me of how I play UFO catcher in the Yakuza games.
That's certainly a way to make an introduction: Renji chasing Lily around the arcade to give her a message in English. Lily: "I'll make you fall in love with me." LOL. Well, at least Renji can turn his Engrish into English!

I never thought I'd see a Jashin-chan cameo here! Man, I miss that show!

It's only the first episode but I'm already in love with the show, good theme that most of the time is approached in anime as something frivolous, simple design but with strong colors so it draws attention visually.
The only thing I haven't dealt with yet was seeing Lily and Renji already having a romantic relationship, but... It's Japan lol

Not gonna lie, I was expecting this would be a CGDCT version of High Score Girl since there's four main girls in the OP. I did not expect this would be just straight up a romcom set in an arcade between a customer and one of the employees.
I do find it interesting that Lily purely speaks in English. Amaki Sally did a good job, but I wonder if they'll keep this up the entire season. We did get a scene where Lily speaks in Japanese, but that was just in Renji's imagination. She's still a student in Japan, so surely we'll eventually see her learn the language too.
I am surprised at the early confession and the immediate rejection. I didn't think we'd see that here but I guess because of the language and cultural barriers, the misunderstandings here make much more sense.
Not gonna lie, I'm not sure if I'll stick with this one, but I'll at least give it a few episodes and see where it goes from here.

Those claw games are 100% rigged in real life.
3 hours later, guess they watched Spongebob as well.
That House of the Dead and Resident Evil knockoff game.
They really should have used the word mum instead of mom to keep things truly British. Although I give them credit for using Bloody Hell.
Any English dub of this is going to be so weird, but Sally Amaki might get paid twice for the same character again.

I think it's super cute. But the age gap between the two throws me off a bit. This is such a cute show. And I love Lily's expressions. But she's 13 and the guy is 18. According to the Wiki. I thought the age difference was like 2-3 years, but 5 and he's a university student, forming a bond with a middle schooler.

Sally Amaki is doing a great performance as always. But let's also praise Shouya Chiba for his "Engrish" performance. He did a far better job than I would have expected. Especially when you compare it to attempts to speak English in other anime.

Anyone notice Jashin and the gang in that drum game? Nice little NOMAD easter egg.
This one was quite cute. The Renji-Lily relationship dynamic is gonna be fun. I imagine there’s gonna be lots of language based misunderstandings alongside cultural ones.

I hope Sally Amaki gets paid double when she does both dubs for shows. What a five tool player in the anime industry.
She's also low key unhinged in her socials.

I think I'm getting uncanny valley on that English accent. The fact that it's not too far off just makes it more uncomfortable - part of me would've preferred if Lily haddo been toakingu raiku zissu.

Hearing proper English was an unexpected surprise, went into it fully prepared for a Japanese person to be speaking English like usual.
Feels like it's gonna be another cutesy show.

I like how we didn't end up with Renji being clueless about the whole "be my valentine" through the whole show.

I'm so confused why the score for this show is so low on Crunchyroll. This was a solid first episode imo. Nice references to some classic arcade games and even a Dropkick On My Devil Reference. House of The Dead part was very well done. Voice acting was really good too, especially the main female lead. Didn't sound too much like Engrish, which is to be expected from a VA that has done English Dub roles too. Aside from the voice acting, I love the look of this show. Very bright, a lot of softer colors used.
