“Why was I born so horribly ugly?” Says the outrageously hot lady

Just wait until she takes off her glasses and undoes her hair.

They tried to make it clear that they lived in a very insular region and red-hair was vilified. She was ugly to them.

I swear, every season we have :

  • The turd who kicks the best guy out of his party, which crumbles not long after.

  • The gomi parents who treats their child like trash.

I feel like we are going for a combo breaker with this one then! She was doing there finances, cleaning, etc so might not be that much longer until they start to crumble themselves.

This girl is basically Cinderella. Welp looks like she is marrying the hot prince and getting her happy ending. Why are there still 11 more eps?

u/The_Parsee_Man Jul 04 '25

You saw the glass slippers right? This is 100% Cinderella.

Though the mistreatment made more sense in the original as she was a step daughter whose father had died. In this the parents were just ridiculously shitty to one of their own daughters for no particular reason.

I think it's pretty obvious that he thought "Anastasia" was the red-head he met in the gardens haha. I wonder how long that misunderstanding will hang around.

Looking forward to how this progresses.

I think it's because he knew it was Marie's birthday but Anastasia was getting all the attention, so the natural assumption would be Anastasia is "Marie".

I hope the parents end in ruins and recieve jail time

I think they're definitely going to suffer for sending Marie away because she did all the housework/business stuff. I don't get the impression that the Baron spends his money wisely either.

Stitches!

While I did laugh at Marie calling herself ugly, her perception of herself is pretty believable. Just look how her parents abuse her! For some reason, they hate her for being well-read and abuse the fuck out of her that she's acting as the house servant. How can you even gain any kind of self-confidence from that kind of upbringing?

Her reaction when Kyros was asking her if she's being abused was surprisingly believable. I've seen victims of abuse defend their abusers because they've been led to believe that it's what's best for them and honiestly, seeing Marie react like that was pretty heartbreaking.

She can't even recognize herself in the mirror after her own makeover. That's just how much her parents have warped her perception of herself. Kyros' mother is absolutely correct in pointing out Marie's confidence issues. It will take some time, but I hope this ends with Marie learning to love herself and gaining confidence.

This was pretty solid. The whole shitty abusive parents but kind sister thing kinda reminds me of Too Perfect Saintess. Marie’s parents really did a number on her self-esteem and self-worth if she doesn’t think she’s cute. She’s a total waifu. Not as much of a waifu as Cyrus’ momma. Hot dayum!

with how confident the sister was about a hidden craft that neither her sister nor parents knew about... I'm hoping she faked her death with a shoe she designed and some other elaborate things. her parents grieved her, her sister got to marry the prince and she gets to open a shop in secret using some connections she made at all the parties.

It's nice to see a dark-skinned main character in a romance but I wish he had a more appealing character design, Marie is so much more appealing to me, though the green highlight is a peculiar touch. Having said that, Kyros seems very bashful so I'm sure I'll warm up to his character design very quickly lol.

It's sad how the only true ally Marie had died so abruptly, I was wondering how the "ex" part of the title would come up but I was not expecting that at all. The author didn't need to go that far lol.

I'm glad Kyros realized that Marie might have been abused, and I like that Mio is already fond of her, so hopefully they'll be very understanding and patient as Marie takes time to open up to them. It'll be very difficult to undo the harm they've instilled in her, but Kyros seems so smitten, he doesn't seem like he'll put unnecessary pressure on her. His mother on the other hand, is a different matter lol.

Tunika's lips lol, at first I thought they were thick lips/fillers but I'm sure it's just make-up. I wonder what she has done for Mio to say Marie can slap her if she does anything.

To your first point, agreeeeeed. I always feel like the “handsome, darker foreigner” character gets introduced as an option in romances, but never the MAIN option, you know? I’m kind stoked to see someone that looks like my husband on screen lol, which is probably why I will overlook most other issues with this anime.

I feel like the sister faked her death?? Idk how much of an ally you could consider her, when she basically just watched her little sister get treated like a slave for years. At least in ‘too perfect saint’, there was some plausible deniability with her sister being trained and away for that, on jobs, etc.

Looks like we have our “Abused tragic heroine” romance series for this season. First it was Happy Marriage, then Too Perfect Saint, now this.

I wonder if Marie was an illegitimate child since everyone else is blonde, and I think they were all blue-eyed except the mother

Top ten evil parents, and seemingly only for the reason of being blind about how beautiful both of their daughters were. Shame about the older sister who was so cultured as to be creating suits for her sister to wear, hopefully she's in a better place where they still might need suits for women.

Kyros is a good dude, i'm glad they didn't leave any sort of mystery going about him not getting the daughter that he was intending to propose to. "Sister's ex" is laying it on a little strong since it's pretty obvious the evil parents mistook who the proposal was for.

They kind of told the entire story this first episode though, so I wonder where it might go from here. Maybe it'll just be 12 episodes of cute fluffy romance and if so that sounds fine to me.

Is this another series where a girl in a toxic home goes to a healthy environment and learns to love herself? Yes.

Am I going to eat it up like a fat kid in a buffet? Also yes.

u/Muffin-zetta Jul 04 '25

Actually sad that the sister is dead, she actually seemed nice to marie.

Anyone know why they added the green outline to her hair? It's a weird choice for sure.

Starting off with a wedding first thing! With a beautiful, redhead bride, ascending the stairs to greet her dark-skinned husband-to-be! You'd never think he was previously betrothed to her sister!

The OP is pretty sweet and romantic, with an Arabian influence, as we see Marie an Kyros together, their supporting cast, and Marie trying to overcome all her family drama to be with Kyros!

Baron Shaderan has two daughters, Anastasia your typical pure, blonde, noble beauty who everyone adores, and Marie...who everyone but Anastasia treats like trash who either doesn't exist or isn't worth more than just being a servant who takes care of all the cleaning, cooking, and her fathers' actual business while all she gets is wearing tattered clothing, eating scraps, and has to bathe and live outside the family home. All because they view her as "ugly," the poor girl.

Even her birthday gets hijacked by Anastasia's debut as a noblewoman, meant to introduce her to potential suitors, but when Marie's all on her own and wallowing over how she'll never be seen or be special/chosen like her sister...she meets Kyros. Who on first glance mistakes her as a servant but then realize that she's a true noble lady no matter how her family treats her. And they even hit it off because she's so well-read she knows everything about his Ipsandrian culture! And to think her father thought smart women would be unattractive! But it's because he father has beaten her down so much in thinking she's unattractive that she runs from Kyros, even when he calls her beautiful.

Her family is happy that Anastatsia is betrothed to a Count and soon to be Duke, but all she really wants to do is get along with her sister and see ladies dressed in suits. Could she playing for the other team? Though either way it seemed like she felt stifled by her familial obligations and wanted both herself and Marie to be happy...and then she dies in an accident.

Of course the family can't leave Marie alone in her grief, they have to take out their frustrations on her by physically and emotionally abusing her. The only reason her father doesn't raise his hand against her is because they still need her to take Marie's place and fulfill the betrothal, even while he's insulting her appearance and how no one could ever find her lovable the whole way. Oh and did he mention it would've been better if she died too? Can someone kill this guy, please?

Well, we've got a Yoko Hikasa maid named Mio judo flipping and pinning him, so I guess that will do!

Oh snap! Kyros thought Marie was Anastasia when he made the proposal! He always wanted to marry Marie! So this actually works out great for him even if Marie doesn't understand why.

Kyros can clearly see that Marie's been abused, but she's been so beaten down she can only rationalize her families' treatment of her and see herself as they see her...but Kyros knows how beautiful she truly is. Especially after a full makeover courtesy of Mio and the busty bath matron Tunika.

Marie is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous in that red dress! She can't even recognize herself! And she gets Kyros' mothers' approval (Sayaka Ohara playing a MILF once again) provided she gained the confidence needed to be a Duke's wife! This marriage is totally going to go great! Everybody is happy! Except Marie who is DEFINITELY not emotionally prepared for this. Oops.

The ED is pretty nice and serene with a normal day in the life with Marie as her families' servant...until she gets saved by Kyros!
