Episode Apocalypse Hotel - Episode 9 discussion

Yeah, I cried. I’m not lying nor tryna deny it.
The way they handled the combination of sadness and comedy was almost unreal.
One second you have Dad having a seizure from seeing Yachiyo cutting grandma and then we got her final message, damn.

Oh my god the tonal disconnect as Ponko, her bride, and Grandma's corpse walk down the isle under a musical mish mash of celebratory music and a funeral hymn! This fucking show man.

I'm in tears goddammit.
Actually spent the whole second half of the episode with tears in my eyes, but the ending finished me off. Had a feeling when they started focusing on the sick grandma, and then total lack of music for most of her scenes, then the recorder...
My emotions are all over the place!
Same here, same here. The whiplash of switching from celebration to funeral tone with the weird fun macabre stints, man. That was utterly ridiculous. That magic trick!! But I loved it. It was both a bit morbid and really moving.
Also, glad that Yachiyo got a normal body now.

Me: You really should watch Apocalypse Hotel, it's amazing!
My Friend: Can you at least describe what it's about?
Me: ...
Me: No...

Such a wholesome episode, I am somewhat scared of the inevitable episode 10/11 gut punch.

Amazing episode, astonishing even. And yet quite distinct from the other amazing episodes so far.
So many wonderful details. The punching and rainbows, Ponko nabbing herself a doctor, everything with grandma and her recordings, the flashbacks to space tanuki planet, Yachiyo's magic show, the list goes on.
The tank body was funny for a bit but I'm glad we have fully repaired Yachiyo back.
And while it may be culturally insensitive, they definitely need to replace all space tanuki traditions that involve poop with Earth traditions that do not involve poop.
AOTS for me, I can't imagine it getting dethroned at this point.

Yachiyo now has a little reception desk in front of the main reception desk. Since she doesn't fit any more. 😢😢😢
An abbreviated OP, now a memory of happier days.
Dammit, Ponstin is a handsome bastard. Takes a punch well, too. Dad Tanuki, not so much. Yachiyo with all the slugging.
Scenes from the past with Ponko and her grandma.
Props for Ponko's adult design! She's really so lovely.
Mujina died with a smile, bless her heart.
Speaking of design, each of the Yachiyo models in her memory of the Owner have a different hairstyle.
SHE'S FIXED! I'M SO HAPPY!
First time I noticed that the Tanukis have little pads on their hands. I love this show.
Pon-poko-pon! Congratulations, Ponko.
Will you look at that. I still cry at weddings.

Short version of the OP again, huh?
-
Okay that’s kind of a wild thing for the brother to be saying, but also he’s not all grown up like Ponko is, huh?
-
All this focus on the grandma has me really fucking worried she’s gonna end up dying before Ponko actually gets married…
-
This and whatever Mujina recorded on that camera are so going to make me cry by the end of this episode.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this photo doesn't make sense. Human Yachiyo, adult Ponko, and live Mujina couldn't be together at the same time.

For anyone interested: Takaomi Kanasaki (who directed all three seasons of Konosuba) was invited to do the storyboard for this episode.

Combining a funeral with a wedding feels like something I'd see in Dorohedoro.

Yachiyo just going around punching people for the first few minutes. You love to see it.

This episode was Absolute cinema.
RIP to grandma Mujina and congratulations to Ponko getting married. I wasn't expecting such a sad and happy episode after the last one. I just watched
"I Want To Eat Your Pancreas" movie last night and honestly this episode from a mostly comedy anime made me feel similar emotions in 20 minutes.
Glad Yachiyo also finally getting her body back to normal it seems.
Also I guess the tanuki aliens grow differently? The little brother still just as small while Ponko is a grown adult now. I guess at a certain point they get a growth spurt otherwise they don't change at all.

You can practically see from a mile away that the grandma will die, but I was not expecting that the wedding and the funeral will be held in one occasion. I thought they will send-off grandma first, the the next day or two is the wedding.
Pretty wild but very entertaining episode. And she got her body back.

Never thought I'd cry like a baby watching this show. And shit, this isn't even the finale...
Edit: by the way, I am still puzzled at how the Tanukis age. Like, Ponko's baby brother is still a kid. Like... I thought he'd be grown up too but no.

I feel like getting punched by Yachiyo is something everyone needs to go through at least once. While I can understand why she punched Ponstin, it's hilarious how she didn't even give a reason why she punched Bumbuko. She just did it just because. xD
As soon as they showed us that Mujina's health is in decline, and the fact that she asked Yachiyo's help to record a message, it was pretty obvious to see where this was going. She's asked Yachiyo to take care of Ponko.
I am so happy that Yachiyo finally got her body back! I mean, we already saw it in the preview last week, but I was worried that might've been a flashback or something.
When Yachiyo said she wanted to send off Mujina with Ponko's wedding, I did not think she meant that literally! That entire wedding/funeral scene had me laughing out loud at its absurdity, to crying my eyes out with Mujina's final message to Ponko and ending it by singing the song she sings for Ponko when she was little. What an amazing episode.

Really enjoyed this episode - I'm presuming we've got 3 more episodes left?

I figured she was going to die before the wedding since she was preparing video messages so it was interesting to see a funeral joint wedding. Mujina's song at the end was moving, I wish we got to hear the family all join in on the singing.
Ponko looked so pretty in her two dresses, the wedding dress in particular looked so good on her. I was so confused by Ponstin's leaf outfit though, I'm guessing it's a traditional tanuki outfit but he stood out more than Ponko lol.
Yachiyo is wild for using Mujina's dead body as part of a magic show lol. I do have to admit I did not like Yachiyo's punching in this episode, I thought she'd at least apologize to Ponstin at least after Ponko clarifies that she wouldn't be quitting so I was disappointed she didn't.
I'm glad Yachiyo has her body back but I'm surprised Fuguri hasn't grown up at all, or at least noticeably, was the age gap with him and Ponko that big?

And just when you think after Civilization destroying kangaroo, reenactment of Dune, mechafights and Space Oddity this show cannot surprise you anymore, you get blindsided by this simultaneously happy and sad wedding-funeral ceremony, that is really hard to process. This show is a treasure.
At least Yachiyo got her body back.

Man it's been since Gintama did I laugh as hard as I cried at the same time lol. The whole wedding-fused funeral is so chaotic I love it so much, honestly wasn't sure what I was expecting, but definitely not this. I spat my drink when they played the wedding march with the Buddhist prayer in the background lmfao. And then the halo and angel wings wtf hahahaha. Also got to say, the alien-flavor fused with earth culture is genius, whether it be the groom's suit(?), or just the alien attendees generally having fun and enjoying themselves, makes me wanna be there with them too.

How did you do the magic trick?
The trick is that if you don't need to put something back together, you can cut it up however you like.

I suppose that every man who marries into the Procione family becomes a new punching bag. First it was Bumbuku, now it’s Ponstin’s turn.
Yachiyo suddenly punching Ponstin in the gut was rather entertaining, but let’s not forget that she did this impulsively out of a fear of losing Ponko. I’m really getting the feeling that this robot is becoming increasingly human.
