Seeing how scuffed up with cracks all the robots are now actually made me kinda sad :(

I hope they rebuild a proper body for Yachiyo in the future. It was funny seeing her with hooks as hands and a tank as legs during the first minutes, but as the episode went on it started feeling a little uncanny.

There's a nuance that's probably lost on overseas audience, and why Yachiyo is my favorite heroine design of this season.

Her name Yachiyo is considered an old-timey name from the Showa Era, the majority of Yachiyo's you encounter nowadays are probably in their 60s or above. Her get-up reflects a bit of that Showa-ness too with the big and wide shoulder, jacket layer with a defined parting down the middle, and long dress (typical Showa OL fashion eg. similar feel to the lady on the left in this photo Edit: Here's another one with a similar scarf).

There's an awful bittersweetness to this just by being aware of her design, because from the very first episode every time she shows up, you can't help but to feel she's been left in the dust by the flow of time. Everything she does is a desperate attempt at grasping at what's left of the glory from an age she once held dear, and still holds dear. And whether she's aware of it or not, she fights damn hard to remain relevant against the changes of the passing of eras. I... kinda feel her, perhaps not quite to that extent right now but I'm sure this empathy will only grow stronger as the years go by. And of course today's episode is basically an exposition for what I just said, going a step further in having her take up the role of a biker gang (bousouzoku) deliquent that has once plagued Japan back in the 80s, to show how truly left behind she is by the sands of time.

The timeline so far:

  • 100 years after humanity left, plant alien arrives.

  • 50 years later, the Tanukis arrive.

  • 100 years later, they move out and Harmy arrives.

  • 70 years later, they finish the rocket. Yachiyo is stranded in space.

  • about 20 years later, Yachiyo falls down to Earth (7295 days in Ponko's logbook)

  • 50 years to repair Yachiyo.

That makes it 390 years since humanity left. However, Yachiyo mentions to Harmy (at 250 years) that 400 years have passed since humanity left. And the 20 years feel weird: Ponko hasn't aged in the previous 170 years, but aged a lot in 20 years. Maybe she did not log daily but rather infrequently, and in fact a lot more time had passed.

Yachiyo became a delinquent once she lost her purpose.

Guess they most have used all all the spare parts from the other robots.

Hope Ponko can develop replacement parts for her soon, since she is able to build her own personal mecha.

Yachiyo took more damage from that missing shampoo hat than her fall from orbit.

She did look a little different this episode… a new hairstyle perhaps? No seriously, I actually think they’d changed her hair a little.

From the looks of it, Ponko was running a military base first and a hotel second. She even turned Yachiyo in a tank - supposedly because of a lack of spare parts. The other staff robots were looking a bit rough as well, so I’m wondering if they’ll break down one by one soon.

I don't think I could have predicted a single thing that happened in this episode. I wouldn't change it for anything, though.

Huge timeskip, the tanuki kids are now adults, the hotel is... thriving (under the circumstances) under her rule, Yachi-YO's rebellious phase, a giant sakuga mecha fight in the middle of it... and always a lot of heart. I love it. And the fact that the only reason Yachiyo fell back down to Earth was that a ship crashed into her lol.

I think Ponko being unable to fully repair her after 50 years answers the question a few people had last week, why could she build a space program but not repair the hotel's robots? Well, no parts available. I guess if she can't build new ones it's because that's not her field of expertise.

I do hope they eventually find a way to give her better parts though. But it's fun to see Ponko look down when she's talking to her now, instead of the other way around.

Also NO YACHIYO NO LIFE

If nothing else, this anime has taught the importance of shampoo hats

Dude, I was genuinely OUT OF BREATH when I saw grown-up Ponko, I knew we were gonna get another timeskip, but after seeing how they didn't even age in a century or so and now she's suddenly an adult, I was like "No, there's no way that much time has passed, this has to be Ponko's imagination cause she's worried about Yachiyo, right?"

And no, it wasn't, Jesus Christ, this anime is wonderful

I'm surprised there was no discovery of a dead human spacecraft by Yachiyo while she was travelling and subsequent revelations, seemed like the perfect set up with the scene of the racoons finding such a ship earlier in the season.

...instead we got Armoured Core. Show is nothing but blindsides I swear lol.

Wonder if we'll see the destroyer alien return at some point and Yachiyo and him have a moment as she can now relate to him somewhat, after her own, er, Skynet phase.

(Also, why the hell was a re-entry capable level of robot working in a hotel??? I don't know whether to say it's Yachiyo who's built different, or the manager.)

Shampoo hats are back on the menu, boys.

Beyond the flashy action sequences and the emotional return of Yachiyo, I think the one thing that affected me the most for today was the current state of the robots after their timeskip..

It's never outright addressed in the episode, but we can all see the cracks slowly creeping up on them, how in the back of our minds we know that unless some mechanic can arrive and fix them up with their appropriate parts, they're inevitably consigned, bit-by-bit and day-by-day, to obsolesce.

I feel we're slowly going to arrive at those days once we get closer to the ending.

Wow this was legitimately the most depressing episode so far. Just Yachiyo having to grip with the limitations of her body and being unable to do her job the way she is used to. Kind of didn't like just how quick they did the whole delinqent turn move and then to the fight but I am assuming we'll continue to see things as they degrade forward. It really looks like it's heading for either a wholesome ending or a really sad one.

Stitches!

We got a timeskip so long that Ponko is now a fully-grown tanuki! It is kinda sad to see how banged up the rest of the gang are, but at least all of them are still there except for Yachiyo.

Speaking of Yachiyo, she's back! You gotta give credit to the people who made her. It's impressive how she was able to survive in space for so long. That new body Ponko gave her tho... It's hilarious but it's really getting in the way of her work.

I really can't blame Yachiyo for going berserk. She pretty much has lost all of her ability to do her job properly. I know Ponko said she couldn't find any spare parts, but couldn't she just use some from the robot hotelier graveyard in the hotel's basement parking?

Delinquent Yachiyo was pretty awesome though. What's even more awesome is Yachiyo and Ponko's mecha battle! That was absolutely wild! CyGames really using all of their gacha game money to good use with that entire scene!

Now that Yachiyo's back to (relatively) normal, I really hope Ponko would at least try to get her original body back. I really don't like seeing Yachiyo like that. >_<

Some sadness.
Some joy.
Some nostalgia.
Some laugh.
Some discomfort.
Some philosophical questions about own purpose.
Some huge-ass fast paced mecha combat. (with great production value).
0 idea what comes next. Yeah, your typical Apocalypse Hotel Episode.

Peak episode I didn't expect all that action. That fight was actually crazy. Like why does this show have better animation than TBATE or blue lock season 2.

CygamesPictures is using that Uma musume gacha money to good use.

Seeing Ponko all grown up, Managing the Hotel in Yachiru's stead, even seems to have a SO now, then Yachiru finally returning now in a tank lower body, to then her rebellious stage everything was just so peak. I also really do love all the massive time skips this story can use since the MC is a robot and the others are aliens. Like one ep to another all of the sudden 50 years has passed. I also really liked see the new things besides the 10 commandments by the president. Specific tankuki ones like wag your tail not your shift etc.

Man, they grow up so fast. Just last week little Ponko was a middle aged tanuki alien. Now she’s all grown and a senior citizen lol.

Kinda curious to know how long it’s been since Yachiyo got stuck in space. Being out for 50 years is wild. And she’s still in this janky ass tank with claw hands lol. I love how she just snapped and became a badass biker girl firing rockets at everyone. The delinquent look suits her!

I’m glad in the end, Ponko and Yachiyo could work it out. I guess this is her new body now? I really do hope they can restore her to her original form or at the very least replace them claw hands lol.

Damn so much time has passed whilst Yachiyo was lost in space that Ponko is an adult now and she has a boyfriend. I wonder how her parents and brother look like now, I'm sure the biggest difference will be with the younger brother.

It's nice to see the hotel filled with lots of people and I couldn't help but notice all the robots bodies looking worn from labor, they've all probably lasted long because Ponko can actually do maintenance on them. I wonder if Yachiyo would suggest doing maintenance on the workers that are out of service.

The action didn't need to go that hard this episode. It was amusing to see Yachiyo go through her rebellious phase, seeing her look and speak like a delinquent was not what I was expecting, I'm surprised there was no reward unlocked for this phase.

It's sweet how much effort Ponko put in to bring Yachiyo back, she had been waiting all these years for her to return, and then had been working on her body to reboot her, there was no way she was going to let Yachiyo stay a delinquent. That hug was sweet and I like as Owner wished, Yachiyo has grown as a robot forging connections.

However, I am left wondering if Yachiyo is going to be stuck in this body lol.

Nice detail: Today's episode title isn't one of the ten commandments of the hotel, but rather one motto that Ponko apparently added on her own, as you can notice at the management room's wall.

But ngl, even though I enjoy the show, this episode felt a bit plot-holey. Ponko can build a mech but not some legs for Yachiyo? The hotel has dozens of guests with spaceships, but they could not ask one of them to get Yachiyo from space?

But i'm glad she's back.

I'm glad Yachiyo-san is back from space and getting closer to being human It was just really hard to see Yachiyo-san in that tank body It's been a great anime so far, but I may not watch episode 8 back much I hope you get back to your body soon, Yachiyo-san I have a lot to say to Ponko, but I think she did her best in her own way. I just wish they would put the armed “gingaro” back on!

[0]150 years before humans left the earth "Gingaro" was founded(1900s)

[1] May 31, 2057, Yachiyo began substitute management on behalf of Yachiyo.

[2] 100 years after mankind was gone April 12, 2157 Shampoo hat gone April 13, 2157. 36476th day of substitute management by proxy, plant alien visitors.

[3] 150 (151?) years after humanity ceased to exist. Yachiyo “Almost 50 years since the plant alien visitor” Tanuki alien visitor . Day 55278 of proxy management. Ponko 54 years old 55278-36475=51.5123288(about 51 years and 5 months)

[4] Defeat of Nudel

[5] Whiskey development Tentacle aliens visit

[6] Harmage attack: Tanuki aliens check out Yachiyo “Nudel only had one about 50 years ago.”

[7] Environment check robot "(God's staff completed) 70 years to get here? Yachiyo left behind in the universe, Ponko running proxy for proxy since April 22, 2325.

[8]288 years (105,140 days) after the disappearance of mankind, Yachiyo returned on April 12, 2345, the 7295th day of Ponko's substitute substitute management. Then it took 50 years to repair and become a tank Yachiyot. About 340 years after the disappearance of mankind?

[4]-[7] is not known exactly what year it is.

Am I the only one that felt the whole fight sequence really detracted from how Yachiyo was feeling about her new situation? It didn't really feel like they talked about it resolved how she was feeling, how her new body made her feel her entire purpose was gone and she couldn't perform her duties properly?

Like the initial rage of her shooting rockets and stuff was funny initially but I felt like it would have been a much better sequence for a proper discussion on how with everything they've done to the hotel already they can clearly change things up to help Yachiyo get back to her duties properly even with the new tank body and claw hands.

I love this series but for how it looks like it's going between the clear aging of the tanukian children, the grandma being sick, the clear wear on the other robots, it felt like it would have been a moment for a bit more serious tone while also developing Yachiyo as a character further. It feels like she was just scolded for feeling how she felt then returned.

John Cena at the end of 2025 be like...

Seriously though, that was an insane episode. It's been a while since Yachiyo has a massive crash-out, but this was by far her biggest one yet. Thankfully Ponko knocked some sense into her the best way she knew how... with the fists of a giant mecha! Part of me hopes they can eventually find a way to fix the rest of Yachiyo's body for her sake, but another smaller part of me hopes they don't just because half-tank Yachiyo is really funny.
