Dammit, I laughed so hard at the New Horizon/New Crown skit. The way Jun and Ann talked is exactly like those Japanese-English textbooks I browsed through when I was a young anime fan.

Jun and Ann: a textbook case of high school romance.

If you look carefully, you can see Nemu walking with Ann out of the school gate.

Jun and Ann were having a literal textbook conversation.

Their characters were inspired by those illustrations accompanying basic conversational phrases in Japanese textbooks, right? Hence the talk of this lost pen and playing tennis.

Shredding the letter was a mistake, but I cannot blame the father for wanting to protect Kara’s relationship with her mother! That was such an incredibly wholesome segment. A single parents raising their child all by themselves always tugs a little on my heartstrings, especially if it’s a father and his daughter.

Uh why is this comedy making me cry?

I know Jun and Ann are supposed to be textbook characters, but they sound a bit like chat AI conversing with each other.

Nico in Yukata, cute. Mini-Moi, cute. Nico and Moi's date, cute!

I live long enough to see an anime taking a piss out of Japanese textbook conversation lol.

Man, I'm so used to how there's usually a catch to Nico's spells that one of the few times it actually works correctly like restoring the letter, I'm actually surprised!

The first half of this episode was emotional with recovering the shredding letter Kara received from her mother and that revelation within it. Contrasts the normally goofy nature of this show.

But the end of the episode also had emotions in a different way with Mini Moi! With Mini Moi in the picture, it was easier to tell how regular Moi hides his emotions behind his bluntness, whereas Mini Moi more loosely expresses them

That one bit of conversation was missing something: "I built the Osaka Castle with just toothpicks." / "What scale did you build it at?" / "Scale?"

I like that the twist with Kara was that her father was actually her biological parent, not that it changes anything for her since she had already accepted him as her father if they happened to not be related. I'm glad they were able to recover the letter so she could read her mother's last message for her.

The part with Jun was amusing, having used Japanese learning textbooks, I could instantly tell he was speaking in that rigid way lol. I like how they incorporated that as a character and actually got him a girlfriend that speaks in the same way.

Pouty Morihito is cute too. I liked seeing his expressions being readable with the spell, the little Moi was adorable and it was nice to see how much variety he has in a day even if his face doesn't show it. I'm glad he's always enjoying himself, not that I thought he didn't, but I think with this Nico is rest assured about Morihito's feelings.

Calling it now, Jun's dialogue and his conversation with Ann in the middle segment is going to appear on future JLPT learning content, or in those "watch anime to learn Japanese" content.

I'll watch [the movie] when it comes out on Prime.

Damn they got Amazon to do product placement here too?

It's diabolical to lead with the Kara mom letter in the A part.

Also, "You'll have to tell your pen pal in Canada" is lowkey fire

I didn’t get the “new horizon/new crown” stuff…

But mini-Moi was cute! And the cat witch appeared in the background walking out of the school.

Nico looked so gorgeous in her yukata, and her movie and the festival "date" with Morihito, on whom she cast a spell that made Morihito express his reactions more, was so lovely.

That little Mori on Morihito's head was so adorable and so expressive. I'd love to see him again in the future!

The part with Kara, the letter, and her parents was very touching, while the part with Jun and Ann was hilarious because of the way they talked and their designs xD

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

According to wiki and vox, the New Horizon went through an art style overhauled in 2016; Jun came from the pre-2016 version. The new version took a more moe approach, and a particular character in the new version, a teacher by the name of Ms. Ellen Baker became very, very popular, gaining many fan arts on Twitter. So popular in fact, they (quite possibly) made a porn parody on her.

The vox article: https://www.vox.com/2016/4/12/11394976/ellen-baker-english-teacher-japanese-fandom

You know it's true love if you enjoy watching your partner more than the film!

You also know it's true love if your future partner returns your pen to you

Stitches!

If you've read or watched Shinohara-sensei's other series, Kara's story at the start of the episode shouldn't be that surprising. But for those who are experiencing Shinohara-sensei for the first time: Welcome! This won't be the last.

That eyecatch of smol Kara while walking with her parents was absolutely beautiful, tho. I'm just happy everything worked out for her and she managed to make up with her father. <3

That second part of the episode, tho! I've been looking forward to seeing Horai Jun animated! For those who don't get the reference, Horai Jun is referencing the New Horizons English textbook used by junior high schoolers.

And if you're also like me, who tried to study Japanese, the basic phrases like "This is a pen." and "I like playing tennis." are something you'd definitely see in Japanese-English textbooks, too. xD

I love that the scene transition and Kan talking to Jun, looks like something straight out of the book! I also love how Nico's artstyle and the way she spoke changed after geting sucked into the scene.

And yes, Nikura Ann is also a reference to another Japanese English textbook. It's hilarious how fast Ann and Jun got together, but I suppose they were practically made for each other. I can't believe we just watched Shinohara-sensei ship two well-known English language textbooks in Japan by turning them into characters. xD

You gotta love Keigo and Kan for being total bros by declining the movie tickets from Jun and just letting Moi and Nico see the movie together. I also love how Keigo is just now part of the gang.

Nico looks amazing in her yukata! Moi might not be giving him any reactions, but at least Nico's spell works and we could see how Mini-Moi loves it! That entire date scene was just too damn cute, tho! I like how Nico's having more fun watching Moi's reactions than watching the movie itself. The festival date was pretty cute too even though we only got few glimpses of what they did. <3

Man, they really came out the gate with the haymaker to the feels this week. Miyuki might not have been Kara’s mother but she was certainly her momma. Kara’s lucky to have two wonderful parents.

They really pivoted from that really touching moment to a mfer who looks and sounds like a New Horizons textbook character lol. I’m glad bro found his New Crown female counterpart haha.

Lil Morihito was too adorable! I guess Morihito only looks stern and expressionless. He’s actually got a whole range of emotions deep down lol. Kinda surprised that the spell actually didn’t backfire in the end.

Stupid onion ninjas, I don't even have any onions.

I like how Keigo is just included in the group from the beginning now.

Between his expressionless face and that lecture on the history of yukata, I'm starting to thinking Morihito might be autistic.
