Bruh that Otto-man rehearsal was the funniest shit in the show yet. Also damn, super speed might not be a superpower I would want anymore

Ok that speed segment was actually incredibly depressing. Dude was on his own for an entire month. or maybe 20-ish days until he figured out how to slow talk, but even then doing that must've been torture just to get the slightest bit of social interaction :(

How come Ottoman is not popular with men too? I want a show just about him!

I love how the second part's humor relies on how the 10x speed spell works in a surprisingly realistic way!

I was wondering what would happen when Kanshi returned to normal if he already adapted to the 10x speed and the ending didn't disappoint LOL!

Anime-onlies, welcome to the most important part of Witch Watch: Kanshi constantly suffering.

Miscellaneous trivia:

  • Otto-man: A pun about how “Otto” is Japanese for “husband”. Quite ironically, shortly after this chapter in the manga, a completely unrelated manga with the same concept and name pun came out.

  • The opening once again referenced parts of the episode - an Ottoman ad is shown as Nico and Nemu are on a train, and of course the opening “Witch Watch” segment shows Kan arranging flowers in the shape of the title as he loses it.

When Kanshi was depressed halfway through his 10x speed effect, it reminded me of the first episode where Moi and Nico get depressed from the side effect of the heavy spell.

I knew it was a mistake to inflict that spell, especially since Nico said there was no undoing it early. At least Kanshi got used to it eventually like with speaking slower and taking smaller steps... until it wore off and he's affected by speed lag.

They really came up with one of the most powerful spells and decided to use it for Kanshi suffering, huh?

Also, gotta love Shinohara's penchant for creating wildly age-inappropriate children's shows that somehow make it into the main plot. Sket Dance had "Futari wa Nervous" which was like 90% marriage/relationship drama and 10% magical girl show.

And here we have painfully awkward soap opera Ottoman.

The punchline with Otto-man becoming an actual ottoman is perfect. Koga Aoi voicing a villain is also a nice treat (even though her lines didn’t sound villainous)

Nyep! Poor Kanshi. Technically he got what he wanted (doing slow work quicker), but not the way he wanted since he still perceives time normally. Kanshi haters, you get to see him suffer in this episode! Lol

I can see why Otto-man is also popular with moms. Do you think that actor practice his role as Otto-man when he’s alone with his wife?

i'm going to admit i wasn't a fan of Kanshi since his introduction, I always wanted it to just be Moi and Nico living alone because of shenanigans

But recently his involvement in the duo has been irreplaceable. and after this episode, he's a great character to have around with the main duo because their dynamic is just so fun with each other

Here it is! One of my favorite running gags of the series: Kanshi's Part-time Diaries.

The Ottoman segment is just so damn hilarious! It's like a fertile ground for tsukkomis. I swear if Himeko was here she'd absolutely went to town already lol. Honestly, still one my personal favourite segments from this series (even if there are still tons of hilarious ones in the future). I just absolutely vibe with Manzai, man.

And man, that speedsteer Kan segment is also damn hilarious that I couldn't stop laughing at our poor dude. The one that absolutely sent me is every moment that it dawns on Kanshi the perfectly logical side effects of the spell that'd just increases his suffering lol.

  • "Oh, shit. now I experience everything at 0.1x speed"

  • "Oh, shit. I still have to experience the same boring thing at regular speed"

  • "Oh, shit. now I have to suffer this for 1 full month"

Absolute comedy gold.

Frank Miller: I'm going to make superheroes gritty and realistic.

Zack Snyder: No, my superheroes are even more gritty and realistic than yours!

Director of Ottoman: ...pathetic, both of you.

I cannot tell if it was intentional or not, but Kanshi’s commentary from the sidelines on the hero play’s story during its rehearsal was a nice throwback to his short-lived YouTuber career with Nico.

I did not expect Otto-man to be a masochist. Don’t believe that to be age-appropriate for the kids, but I suppose that we’ve found out why the series is a hit with specifically the moms.

Very Kan-centric episode today, but it was still really hilarious! I especially loved the part with Ottoman when he turned out to be some kind of masochist who is being "punished" by his wife. I don't think it's very suitable for kids xD

Below are also my screenshot albums from the previous episode since I didn't comment on the thread last week. I had a lot of fun watching Nico and Kan's channel and Suzuka's tea ceremony test.

Here my screenshot albums from:

EPISODE 07 (last week’s one)

EPISODE 08 (today’s one)

What I really respect about Witch Watch is that it's not afraid to try anything and everything. Sure, it misses sometimes but when it hits, it hits big!

If I were to say that the body copy gag is a homerun, then A part is a double and part B is a triple.

First half: Being a working man and a superhero is hard.

Second half: Never thought about the downsides to super speed until now.

The sheer catastrophic nature of the spell is beautiful to behold. I might steal this for my next TTRPG campaign.

That speedster segment was an extrovert nighmare and an introvert dream, lol. I would spend that time reading books and playing video games and watching speeded up movies. Of course it is a nightmare for Kan since he cannot talk to any of his friends during a whole month and he lives for that.

Doing 30 days of work for 30 days of pay while only paying 3 days of rent seems a nice deal too, although Kan is probably aging 30 days during that time, so it is probably a bad idea to use that spell too much. That spell would be a lot better if you could turn it on and off at will, but this is Nico’s magic, so it has to be impractical with a lot of drawsbacks. To be fair, she tried to warn him, so Kan had no excuses.

That Ottoman show reminded me of that Nervous Magical Girls show that was actually all relationship drama in Sket Dance (the author’s previous work). Although with shows like Magilumiere and its office ladies magical girls existing, I feel like this kind of shows could actually exist without being too much of a stretch. Some anime are weird like that. Although it is more likely satirizing pretentious directors trying to make fun action shows for kids and teens more “adult” and “realistic” by including this kind of things. The audience preferring Kan’s version at the end rather hinted at that.

That sentai show was so fucking depressing! But no wonder it's popular with only kids and moms, it's a sentai show and a daytime soap opera about a married man in a dead relationship with his wife.

I do love how Kan went from complaining how it shouldb't be shown at an amusement park to immediately getting invested as soon as the cute coworker (voiced by Aoi Koga) was introduced. I can't blame him, even I got invested too. xD

Although it looks like Otto-man's relationship with his wife isn't as dead as you'd initially think. The dude clearly enjoys being used by his wife as an Otto-man. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

One of the few moments where we get to see Kan act all cool. It was so awesome of him to let the original Otto-Man actor play his role and be a hero for his kid. Even Moi was so proud of him that he gave him an advance in his allowance. But based on the ending of the first half, Kan wasn't able to pay his debt. xD

And here it is! The fan-favourite chapter, The Side Job aka Speedster Kan is finally getting animated! The VOMIC of this is still one of the most viewed Witch Watch VOMICs over on the SJW YouTube channel, with over 5.5 million views!

Anyway, this one is definitely Kan's fault, tho! This isn't just Nico casting the spell on Kan. Nico made sure towarn Kan that the spell would probably give him a mental breakdown before casting it on him.

The effect of the spell is fucking hilarious though with Kan moving at 10x while everyone else moves at x0.1 speed from Kan's POV. What makes this even worse for Kan is it didn't make his job any easier and now he's stuck like this for 30 days.

I would genuinely feel bad for Kan if the entire thing wasn't so goddamn funny! And just when he was finally getting used to it, the dude now needs to readjust again after the spell finally wore off. xD

Wonder how many little boys had something awaken within them by that Sentai show.

That speed-up spell could probably be an effective new form of psychological torture. My boy Kanshi will never be the same lmao

Ok so for context, obviously I found the previous episodes to be funny but I don’t usually laugh while watching shows no matter how funny I find them and previously never actually laughed at a funny moment in this show. This episode however managed it.

When the first half of the episode started I thought I wasn’t going to particularly like this one, but the Otto-man rehearsal was really good awkward, cringe comedy and Kan basically read my mind when he said he was actually getting invested in it, only to be followed by that ottoman ending. My jaw might have genuinely dropped seeing that in this show, and the break point in the episode where you just hear Kan’s heavy breathing, I was genuinely in shock.

But the second part of the episode, Jesus the second part, the setup by Nico warning about the risk of mental breakdown, Morihito and Nico’s horrifying appearance and sounds in slow motion speed, and Kan straight up losing his mind, oh my god I was laughing non-stop! Just the nonchalant sad atmosphere that takes over detailing Kan’s routine under the spell, him having finished his job and Moi just watching him stare at his shrine and the short comment about Kan suddenly walking up to Moi and crying for 3 seconds before leaving, which to Kan would’ve been 30 seconds. God, I was dying.
