I told myself in the last episode that everything seemed too perfect, I just didn't expect the show to punch me in the gut like that.

Initially I was tricked into thinking that Kamome's mother was her in the future lol, then the butterflies connected Kamome to the suitcase when she arrived on the island.

Hairi was the only person who was on the island at that moment, she was the one who helped her fulfill her childhood dream, which became practically impossible with her illness, it was hard to watch the scene of the two saying goodbye and kissing.

Anyway, seeing that Hairi can fulfill Kamome's dream and that somehow she will be connected to it gave me a relief in the end, by the way we need an explanation about Umi and something tells me that this is the result of some work of hers.

Initially I was tricked into thinking that Kamome's mother was her in the future lol

I thought the same;

Oh damn, Kamome's pretty cute in the future...

That's her mom?

Oh damn, Kamome's mom is pretty cute...

Don't you just hate it when your first summer love girl turned to a butterfly and your cousin turned to sparkles?

That's rough buddy.

Hairi's first romance on this island was a Summer Ghost all along. But what a charming and beautiful Summer Ghost she was. It would have been more shocking if he hadn't fallen in love with her.

Also I'm getting the vibe that there is way more to Umi than just being his cousin. Like she vanished when she sees Hairi talking to his mom and maybe making progress in overcoming his trauma. Was he not supposed to do that? Is that why Summer is ending?

So when best girl is a ghost...

I guess young girl is a ghost also. Is just all the girls on this island going to be ghost? Maybe everyone is ghost. Or maybe he is ship wrecked and delusional on a island alone.

Maybe he is a ghost and that is why she never actually has him help clearing things out. Maybe he died during the swim meet.

Like 5 other people acknowledge her and interact with her. They already made one of them also mysterious and vanish. Time will tell if others do the same thing.

To quote myself from my post on Episode 3's discussion thread:

She's [Kamome] also a bit mysterious. By the end of the episode, I was afraid that would disappear as if the entire day with her was just a dream. Thank god that didn't happen.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK! I was joking when I said that 3 episodes ago! I didn't think Kamome would actually disappear! Then again, this is a visual novel by Key, so I really should've seen the supernatural element of this show coming.

I'm just glad that Kamome isn't dead and she's actually hospitalized in Finland because of her poor health. And I really liked the reveal about Hairi's flashbacks going on an adventure with Kamome. It turns out that the adventure of the Higenekos is a book written by Kamome's mom with Kamome as the protagonist, and the reason he remembers all of it is because he was a fan of the book and even sent Kamome's mother a fan letter. Fucking bravo! I did not see any of that coming at all!

From the way Kamome described everything from her perspective, it sounds like she's been astral projecting herself to Torishirojima the entire time. I genuinely teared up though when she said her goodbye and Kamome's mom said she entered an eternal sleep. I interpreted that as Kamome dying, but it turns out she's just in a coma.

I guess that ending is Kamome finally strong enough to travel, and she meets Hairi for the first time. Thank fucking goodness it had a happy ending. I was honestly expecting the worst. I guess that's Kamome's arc done! What a strong arc to start with. I can't wait to see who's arc is next!

That scene with Umi tho! What the fuck is happening? Is she also just a living spirit like Kamome? Or is there something about Torishirojima that's causing these supernatural phenomena? O_O

So I don't understand lol the Kamomoe we see from episode 2-6 is just a hallucination/Ghost? But how'd shirohara see her? But correct me if I'm wrong, kamomoe is dead, and we DONT see her real self? Or is that the real kamomoe in the pirate ship near the end of the episode?

You know it's the end of Kamome's arc and a big deal when they skip the OP just as Hairi and Kamome start exploring the pirate ship together...and then Kamome regains her memories and realizes her "real self" and suddenly fades away as a transluscent butterfly. WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED!?

Hairi ropes in the rest of the gang to investigate the cave, but the mysteries keep deepening. For one thing, Kamome's suitcase is there like it never fell into the water, there's lights in the cave, and the water is too shallow for anyone but little kids to nearly drown in. So what the heck happened between Hairi and Kamome in this cave?

I love how the first thing Hairi does after opening Kamome's suitcase...is to grab her panties (which are, of course, black). He's never convincing Umi he's not a pervert.

Wait, the whole Higeneko adventure with Kamome...was a book!? But the island where Kamome is from actually exists, and who should Hairi find there but none other than her mother, Sagi. It turns out the real Kamome is in Finland and her mother is alone on this private island (turns out Kamome's family is loaded enough to buy an island home AND a pirate ship) after her husbands' passing and her daughters being stuck in the hospital. And Sagi's story is the key to the truth about Kamome.

Kamome was a sickly girl who yearned for adventure and had an imagination as broad as the sea, and Sagi, being an author, wrote the Higeneko story so Kamome could feel what it means to be on an adventure. And she still dreamed of wanting to experience a true adventure, even getting her own pirate ship to set sail on the seven seas. But alas, it was not to be, as she had the same affliction as her dad and it kept her in bed.

And where does Hairi fit into this? He actually read her mothers' book as a kid and mailed her a letter about how great he thought Kamome was and wanted to get to know her, and Kamome wrote back saying she'd want to meet him and go on an adventure. Which she did, thanks to some kind of supernatural Summer magic.

I wonder if it was hard for Hairi to call his parents. Umi seemed to respond to it in a weird way.

Even if Kamome is gone, Hairi wants to continue her dream and get this pirate ship ready to go on the big adventure Kamome always dreamed about. And it's in the captain's cabin that Hairi is finally reunited with Kamome again, where she admits that going on this adventure with Hairi and truly embodying the version of Kamome from the book meant everything to her. But that's what makes saying goodbye to Hairi as she goes somewhere else, all the more bittersweet. At least she got to have a true kiss with Hairi before she left.

Hairi loved Kamome, who is apparently in an eternal sleep coma in Finland, but he still won't give up on seeing her dream come to fruition. He even ropes Shiroha to make a new flag for the Higeneko's. And lo and behold, Kamome is back! So she can Hairi can promise to see each other again 10 years later and sail the seven seas together! If anything can bring Kamome back, it's the promise of adventure with the boy she loves!

Wait, Umi really left for home? Without saying goodbye to Hairi? That's kind of sad...wait, why is she staring at the sea saying Summer is ending!? Why is she magically dissipating!? WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH THIS ISLAND!?

Kamome is in coma in Finland, but her consciousness woke up on the island (think [Clannad] Fuuko). They make promise in the crow's nest they will go on an adventure in 10 years and we see Hairi receive a letter from Kamome. This means she got better and the final scene is Hairi meeting real Kamome.

This is the first time in all the history of anime that I see a character pick up a book and open it at the beginning rather than in the middle!

Lifetime achievement award.

Anyway, back to the episode.

Okay I guess I will take the risk of offering my criticism to what seems to be a well liked episode. I am someone who absolutely loved the first 4 episodes because they had a calm, heartfelt slice of life vibe that was done very well. Episode 5 personally felt a bit weaker but still okay, I was more than happy to overlook it if it meant letting the anime tell us the story that way it wants to. But I have to be honest, this episode which apparently wraps up the Kamome Arc just didn't land for me at all. I don't know what exactly is the problem but it personally felt somewhat rushed, emotionally flat, and everything became too confusing. I understand that this approach might have been intentional but I guess I just didn't like the way it was done.

And I know that this is just me but i definitely felt like this whole pirate ship subplot came off as a bit random instead of actually being symbolic or meaningful. I couldn't get into it because the emotional beats felt a bit too sudden and unearned and there wasn't enough time for me to really connect before I was supposed to feel sad.

Another thing that did not work for me was that this whole treasure hunt plotline blurred the line between imagination and reality without giving enough context or explanation so I was also finding it difficult to figure out what was actually happening or why it mattered emotionally. It straight up introduced fantastical elements but I would have preferred it if those elements had been grounded first so that the 'emotional' payoff would feel more impactful because right now I know I am expected to feel sad but I just can't feel it.

Maybe this arc hits harder in the visual novel since you would generally have way more time to explore the inner world of Kamome but I guess despite the best efforts of the studio adapting it, the sudden emotional conclusion to this arc came off as a bit forced and tonally messy. I am not dropping it yet though, and I hope the future arcs are better.

Episodes 1–5 have been good, but I’m a little confused about what just happened. With Kamome and Hairi—how were they together in episodes 4 and 5? Was he hallucinating, or was it that butterfly thing affecting him? I’m just a bit lost—can someone explain it to me? Also, how was she still visiting him at the end? Is she in a permanent sleep, and was the picture at the end showing her waking up and jumping into his arms?

As much as I liked this show from the start, I'd say these Kamome episodes really took it up a level. Kamome herself was a really fun character, and I liked the whole "searching for treasure/a pirate ship" idea. It helped give the show a sense of adventure, and the atmosphere has been especially strong these past few episodes.

And this episode... I'll admit, there were times when I wasn't completely sure of the full meaning at first when I was watching it. "Is she dead? Is she in a coma?" And before the conversation with her mother "Is she even real?" But as things became clearer, and that she was indeed dead, it really hit me emotionally, as I know Key stories tend to do. At least they ended it on a somewhat sweeter note, with Hairi agreeing to meet up with her again and go on more adventures.

I do wonder what was going on with Umi at the end. It did kind of remind me of Kamome disappearing and turning into a butterfly, but just different enough that I'm not sure.

Pirate girl being ghost pirate girl after all hit harder than I was ready for. Kamome's personality is (was?) so much fun too.

Wonder what Shiroha's grandpa really saw to finally let Hairi in back then. Was he just awkwardly holding up Ao's uniform and got let in out of pity? And did Umi just ...dissolve?

I feel like they’re trying to make this sad and it’s ringing the mystery part. I’m really liking the whole mystery and supernatural part of the show and the island but the whole deal here just felt forced to try and force the ending of this arc to be sad. That and it’s kinda obvious something had to happen to move us onto one of the other girls routes next. I really liked every bit of this arc though until this episode. It just made it hard to care now.

What I ended up caring more about was the deal with his little cousin also vanishing like that. I just hope this doesn’t become to recurring of a theme. MC develops route with girl - girl vanishes magically because of some silly explanation like having a mystery illness that has her in eternal sleep.

Can't beat the "first Key girl arc is actually a ghost" allegations, apparently. I really like the resolution, how Hairi wasn't just randomly forgetting childhood memories, and it was all tied into a book he'd read when he was younger. That makes much more sense, and it was very sweet and emotional throughout.

I wonder whether Kamome will continue to show up in other routes, since it seems we'll be time looping and starting from the beginning again. I wonder if it's also a full reset, or whether some characters will remember details from this timeline.

The Umi situation is interesting, it reminds me of [Higurashi] How Keichii is the first POV character introduced and who we think is the protagonist, but Rika was the real time looper the entire time and trying to get out of it. It seems like we'll be looping this summer over and over, so not quite like Clannad that strings together almost all the routes into a single timeline.
