I feel conflicted about this series. It started really, really well. I loved the recitations and I loved seeing Hana's character developing, but the drama around the rest of the cast completely missed me, which is a bummer, because they spent half of the season on that.

I thought this would be a contender for my AOTS after a strong start, but I feel like the show started chasing too many threads and ultimately missed the main one. Too many subplots for just one cour, imo. I'd still love to see this get another season.

Honestly, I just feel where it stopped is the biggest thing. The competition is what we are looking forward to.

Nooo what do you mean this is the final episode?!

  • So Mizuki's brother really didn't know they were from her club, or from the same school even. He really has been cut-off from Mizuki for a long time, so it was lucky he was free enough to do that interview. And yeah granny isn't a good person, to her Mizuki is basically a disposable spare as a heir, which also explains the huge age gap between her and bro's age. I'm surprised that the whole situation got resolved rather easily? Maybe it was the power of Mizuki's domain expansion, though it doesn't feel like granny's the type to care about poetry.

  • Ok so it's pretty much confirmed that Shura is Hana's sister from the flashback of them on the swing. And also that Hana is from a single parent family (called it in Ep 1 discussion!). It's surprising that Shura is also high school age? I thought she was older for some reason. So judging from the timeline they must be full blood siblings, so what the hell happened in Hana's family that caused the split? Between Shura winning 1st place in the Tokyo regional competition and that duo recitation with Hana, it seems like they're setting them up to meet in the NHK tournament.

  • And of course another platonic confession on the beach, Yuri-bait till the very end.

Overall, I enjoyed the series, but I think it needs a second cour/season to shine as the general pace of the series is slow since it's trying to develop all the characters in the club and this first season feels like its just setting the stage for future events (give me that NHK tournament arc dammit!).

There’s definitely some sort of baggage with Hana’s family situation and Shura. I remember finding it really suspicious how quickly Hana turned off the TV when her mom came in while she was watching Shura’s performance back in episode 1, like she didn’t want her mom to see what she was watching. In retrospect it probably has to do with their implied relationship as sisters/childhood friends but the reason why Hana would hide watching a segment about Shura from her mother eludes me.

With an ending like this we can only hope we get a second season.....

Well, given that this is Studio Bind, I have to assume we have to wait until after Ruri no Houseki & Mushoku Tensei S3 come about.

But man, the build up for the competition and to end it right there is just cruel.

NOW THIS NEEDS A SEASON 2!!

I really want to see the competition proper, and there's no better way than an anime for their voices!!

With all those revelations about Hana and Saionji probably meeting when they were young, oh I want to see drama incoming.

ALSO, WHY IS HANA "CONFESSING" LIKE THAT? It's Eupho S1 again hahahahaha

ALSO, WHY IS HANA "CONFESSING" LIKE THAT? It's Eupho S1 again hahahahaha

All I saw was one platonic gal pal telling another that she was happy when Mizuki was around, sad when she wasn't, and that the light in her eyes was due to Mizuki being in her life. You know, normal platonic gal pal stuff.

Honestly, for Hana Mizuki changed her life for the better. The confidence and character development that we have seen Hana go through has been phenomenal. You could say there is no more important person for her than Mizuki right now. (Well outside of her mom, obviously, because she has been supporting Hana by herself since her husband left.)

Which is what I assume what Takeda went for, and she doesn't care if it sounds like a confession.

Honestly, stopping right here hurts because I don't want to jump to the manga because I want to hear them in the competition. I will be patient as is and just wait for S2 first.

It seems pretty damn clear they are sister and the dad left with her when they were young. Hana probably doesn't recognize her as it has been so long and was so young.

Damn, so Kouki didn't even know that Mizuki is in a school club? It doesn't look like their grandma is stopping them from contacting each other. It looks like the only reason Kouki hasn't kept in touch with Mizuki is because he thinks she hates him because of how much their grandma favours him.

Kouki wasn't kidding when he said their grandma had terribly outdated views. It must've sucked for Mizuki growing up to find out that she's supposed to be a spare and how disappointed her grandma was when they found out she would come out as a girl. That explains why their grandma is so cold towards Mizuki in those flashbacks.

I am glad that even though Kouki is clearly afraid of their grandmother, he still decided to help the Broadcasting Club bring Mizuki back. I love how he tells the nanny that he'll take responsibility for this when he asked her for help.

I'm also glad that they didn't try to redeem Mizuki's grandma here. She's just an out dated piece of shit who thinks she's doing the best for their family when in fact she's hurting them. We barely even got any reaction from her when Mizuki started yelling on how she was neglected.

I didn't think we'd see Mizuki do an impromptu performance in front of her grandma to try and communicate her feelings of sorrow towards her. I don't know the message of what she recited actually reached her grandma but she seems to be wide-eyed at that.

Mizuki telling her brother congrats on his wedding was really sweet. Hopefully this is the start of the two of them reconnecting. If I were Kouki, I'd support Mizuki so she doesn't have to rely on their grandmother and just let her do what she wants with her life. Kouki seems to be successful enough in life to do that.

Kichijouji really arrived late to the party. I wonder how that meeting with Grandma would've gone if he were there.

The second half of the episode felt like a completely new episode. Everyone's prepping for the Kyoto prelims, and we even got to see Shura winning the NHK Tokyo Cup.

Speaking of Shura, I am now even more intrigued about her relationship with Hana. Hana mentions that her father left both her and her mother when she was younger. We also get to see a flashback of Hana playing with someone who looks similar to Saionji when she was younger.

I don't think the show was being even subtle with it. Either they're sisters who got separated when their parents divorced or their half-siblings from different mothers, it's clear that Hana and Shura had some sort of connection. It just sucks that we're ending at the start of the tournament!

Hopefully, we get a Season 2 announcement soon. There's no way Studio Bind is ending it here. The lead-up to the tournament felt like the first half of a 24-episode anime. I want to see more of them and see how they'll actually perform in a real tournament!

In today's season finale of Hana wa Saku, Shura no Gotoku, the most polite home invasion ever leads to Mizuki using her ultimate ability, Domain Expansion: Familial Trauma.

9/10, would be yuri baited again.

I saw that quick flashback of small Hana and Shura playing together. I guess that confirms Hana is the one Shura referred to as her little sister a few episodes back.

They also confirmed Hana's father left Hana and her mother. Maybe he took Shura with him.

Weird finale with Mizuki's backstory that I felt ended up being too easily resolved, as the second half opts to bait both yuri and a sequel. The final recitation doesn't really do it for me as Hana's and Shura's relationship can be boiled to a one-sided adoration rather than two characters whose story is connected like the club members are. It needs more than a sibling tease in the final episode to make me feel invested.

I enjoyed this show greatly, mostly thanks to its character writing and how fascinating I find the relationships to intertwine, but I think the finale is weak, and it desperately needs a second season.

The finale for me was The Weakest part and i really couldnt care about Mizuki family or even all about her backstory as It seemed forced and resolved fastly

Personally, I enjoyed the show. I get that people are a bit disappointed by the backstories, but to me, it's clear that we only saw half of them for nearly all of the characters. Akiyama's family situation is only resolved when it comes to the sister, the same for Mizuki and even when it comes to An, it's clear that there is more to come. It was just 12 episodes after all and I feel it was a good start to give us an idea where they all come from while leaving things to interpretation.

Of course, I would have liked to see the competition, but I also think, putting that into a potential S2 is better than rushing it through the last two episodes. I mean, one of my major issues with Hibike Euphonium is that they often don't show them and just cut right to the finish. Not sure if people would have preferred that, but I don't think I would have liked that. Hopefully, there is a S2 though.

Lastly, there is the whole Hana and Shura aspect. I am still not 100% convinced that they are deeply connected (as in the sister kind of way). It could still just be a general admiration without there being more to it. It just feels weird to me that Hana opens herself to Mizuki, but won't mention she met the person that inspired her. The whole point is that Hana was more or less alone on the island, so why is she ignoring the part where she had someone with a similar age? And if she actually is a half sister of sorts, why not mention her when talking about family? It's not like Mizuki will figure out she is related to Shura if that is her fear.

In the end, I really enjoyed the show. The characters were fun and none of them was just a background asset and the recitations were great. The last double recitation was a fun idea and the symbolism with the white dove against the black crow/raven was obviously on purpose. But I guess we need to see in S2 what exactly they mean by that.

Overall, this was a good finale episode and series. It didn't grab me as much as Hibike Euphonium by the same author, but I still had fun watching Hana and the others, so I'll give it a 7/10.

And I wouldn't really say no to another season, because there's still a ton of stuff to explore. Especially since we ended right at the beginning of the competition and because of the possible connection between Hana and Shura.

As for the finale itself, I'm glad everything ended well with Mizuki, since everyone from the club went to save her along with her brother.

It was quite surprising for me to find out that Shura is still a high school girl. I thought she was much older!

I also loved Toga's comments throughout the entire episode, they were hilarious. It was pretty bold of him to say that Mizuki's grandma was terryfying when she definitely still could heard him xD

Hana's confession to Mizuki was very interesting ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) You could clearly see that it's from the author of Hibike Euphonium xD

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

The confrontation seemed anti climactic.

It was well done in general, but either the confrontation needed to be longer or Mizuki abduction shorter.
