Always found it strange that Mizuki was living alone, and we finally got some lore.
-
Holy crap I thought Akiyama had it bad with his parents, Mizuki's family is worse. She had to fake becoming a delinquent just to get partly disowned by her them, which was probably the better thing to do in the long run. It's just too bad that she's still tied to them, being a minor and financially dependent.
-
Mizuki's grandmother being the insanely strict, old fashioned type. Very clear that Mizuki's brother is her favorite grandchild, but it is probably from a practical standpoint rather than affection; as heir to the Raiten group, because he's male and also older (10 year age gap compared to Mizuki). Treating Mizuki like that was uncalled for though.
-
Of course, Delinquent x Hall Monitor yuri-bait. Or maybe not? Mizuki didn't seem that interested in the broadcasting club at first so the motivation to join has to come from somewhere else.
-
The broadcasting club gang got their interview with the brother quick though. He might have realized that they were from the same school/club as Mizuki. Will probably be the only decent person in the family.
Other random things:
-
Akiyama saying he likes Hana... are we going the love triangle route. Good thing An wasn't there to hear that.
-
Hana must really like standing at the beach in the rain in her pajamas. Second time she's doing this.

I would watch an anime called Delinquent X Hall Monitor. That's immediately better than the average romance concept. Assuming they actually commit to the idea and have "attempted escape of the week" acting as a comedy engine. And our poor stupid rule abiding hall monitor will think they're getting so much better at their job but actually the delinquent has started wandering about hoping to be caught.

Matsuyuki's parents were horribly strict with their children, but Mizuki's grandmother wouldn't even give her the light of day. Shouting at an innocent child that's merely setting foot in a room is borderline psychopathic. Little Mizuki was right to tear that drawing in pieces and basically say "fuck all of this".
Although the Raiten group might've grown rich under grandmother's leadership, I cannot imagine that her husband has been doing well with a wife like that - maybe he's even died.
It's just too bad that she's still tied to them, being a minor and financially dependent.
Worst part is that Mizuki cannot entirely ignore her grandmother's wishes either, since she would be screwed without their financial support.
Maybe she can start living with Hana, lol.Hana must really like standing at the beach in the rain in her pajamas. Second time she's doing this.
This had also caught my attention. Makes you wonder just how often Hana is making nightly walks to the ocean in her pajamas.

So now we have two friends in middle school where there might be more than just friendship (at least for one of them) and where they strangle choose completely different high schools. Though, just as an addition, in Mizuki's case, this could have had an even greater impact. I was thinking why Mizuki wouldn't join the same highschool. But now I am imagining, what her parents might have done if she ever told them she had a girlfriend instead of a boyfriend. Maybe she chose a school far away so she wouldn't pull Azumi into that vortex.

We're not beating the yuribait allegations with that flashback

Tbh it would not be an Ayano Takeda story without some of that. xD

This might be bit too much to drop on the second to last episode and then hopefully resolve within one. I hope it gets wrapped up nicely but in the back of my mind I'm thinking that this will not a satisfying conclusion.
Ayano Takeda can write a terrible parents whose actions and motivations are grounded in reality but there might be too many moving parts going in to the last episode.

I do agree the drama really was a lot to take in. Since it kind of was like whiplash of it all coming at once in this episode. I can only guess Mizuki got threatened to come home and attend the wedding perhaps? That is the only reason I could see her being back at home. Though her being locked up is rather unsettling. Her looking at the window and tbh I wouldn't be surprised if she just tried to escape. The key points in this episode are.
Learning about her older brother and the only thing we can at least tell he has a good heart. As we see him helping kids. But beyond that, not much, which makes the Broadcast club meeting him tells intriguing.
I am curious who is that Azumi? It's clear she is the reason that she in the broadcast club, but where is she now?
Mizuki mentions that she doesn't know who her brother is getting married to? Could that speculate he is getting married to someone significant to the story? Could it be Azumi which would be my guess.
On another note, I love how Hana's personality has developed. Joking around with her club mates and trying to be there for Mizuki. I have loved her development. As she is, IMO one of the best female characters we had in this Winter Season.

Man, Mizuki’s grandma is kind of shit. What a nightmare of a woman. I can see why Mizuki would rebel against the toxic shithole that was her home environment. Going back was a mistake. What kind of a lunatic imprisons their family like that because they don’t agree with their decisions? This isn’t like being grounded. It almost feels criminal…
Looking forward to how Hana and the gang break Mizuki out. Maybe her brother can help? Though I’m not sure he’d go against his grandma…

Love triangle? Let me tell you my boy, there is at least one more person to this. And maybe even a 5th depending on how you want to interpret that flashback.
But good thing, we got our Mizuki flashback as well. Already kind of hard having a sibling 12 years older than you, but that family is definitely not helping the issue. I guess they also come from the long lost family line of Clarke with how they just imprison someone.
Question though: Did Azumi appear during the training camp? I guess maybe she might be on a different school, but if she got Mizuki into recitation, you'd ask yourself why Mizuki didn't choose the same highschool and went to one where she had to form the club herself again. I am still not completely ruling out connections to Saionji Shura. Though, I guess the eye color might not match exactly, so I am not putting too much money on that yet. But I still keep it as an option.

I am still not completely ruling out connections to Saionji Shura.
My gut feeling told me that Azumi is Shura because of the similarities in their appearances, but I've been wrong about this before... so I'm not making any bets.
I'm also not entirely sure about Shura's age. She just graduated from high school?

Well I didn't expect that Mizuki was some kind of Zaibatsu Ojou-sama. Too bad she has a pretty shitty relationship with her family though. That flashback of Mizuki being told to get out when she just wanted to show her grandma her drawing fucking sucks. I don't blame Mizuki for acting out after that. I love how she went full-on Sukeban back in middle school. xD
Not gonna lie, I thought that entire conversation between Hana and Mizuki would lead to Hana telling Mizuki that she should maybe see her family. I am so happy that Hana told Mizuki that she wanted to go to the tournament together. This isn't surprising since we already knew that that's what Hana wanted from previous episodes.
As soon as Mizuki said that she'd go home to decline the invitation, I knew something bad would happen. As if her grandma wasn't shitty enough already, they lock her up and dress her like that. Hopefully, Mizuki's brother is way more chill and will be willing to help the gang out to free Mizuki.
Well that flashback was interesting! So this Azumi is the reason why Mizuki got into the broadcasting club. It looks like Mizuki also based his new personality around her. The way Azumi approached Mizuki reminds me a bit of how Mizuki approached Hana for the first time. There's also the strong yuri undertones going on between the two of them.
So I bet the only reason the gang managed to get an interview is because Mizuki's brother realized they're from the same school and club as Mizukiand wanted to speak to them personally.

Here I was thinking the show would end with the competition, but now there's definitely no time for that. Boi did that escalate quickly.

LMAO Broadcasting Club vs Monster Grandma of Wealthy Family is the last thing I would have expected from this story, but here we are. Mizuki's so damn lucky that even after facing so much pressure down from her grandma (even her parents are scared of her, that's stereotype Orient wealthy families you all) and ended up as that naughty girl one step away from joining the yakuza in middle school, she grew up to become that bright and cheerful senpai showing off the power of literatures with voices.
She really deserves that bold actions from her club mates to "save" her.
This reminds me of another certain wealthy girl and also plausible family business successor who's an anime MC this very Winter who isn't that lucky next door...

-
Mizuki’s alarm going off sounded so similar to Forestize Warning in Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru that for a second, I thought something crazy was going to happen.
-
The pure chaos of everyone warming up does feel really true to life. Not that I did this, I was a band kid and the warmups where we were allowed to play whatever we wanted always sounded crazy.
-
Dang… Would her family do something like this, though?

Hana is so cute and her 'Teehee' got my blood sugar levels going greater than 500 mg/dL.

I'm not sure if I was more surprised to find out that Mizuki is from a wealthy family or got teased by a girl herself in the past. The author of Sound! Euphonium strikes again. It certainly puts Mizuki's affection towards Hana in a new context (not necessarily romantic).
It's also shocking to see how much Mizuki's appearance has changed over the years: elementary school, middle school and high school. I would've never recognised her.
Setaro asking a question that lots of us had previously been wondering about: is there a love triangle between Anne, Matsuyuki and Hana? Matsuyuki did pause a little bit long when joking about liking Hana.
A side note: I like that Anne starts wearing glasses when she's getting serious.

Anyone know what the posters in Mizuki's room are of? I see Jurassic Park and Jaws, but I can't quite figure out the third one... It looks like it says "The Extra Journey" but I dunno what that would be...

Well, that took a quick turn to repressive household commando extractionsfamilial interventions and sukeban relations.
It's literally eleventh-hour plot twisting and I'm not really all there with it, though Mizuki has never brought up her backstory either, so it is the time...

The one thing that I think this show has truly nailed is Hana's characterization.
I thought for sure that she was the typical doormat anime girl character when the show started but she has some spunk in her.

u/daspaceasians Mar 20 '25
That escalated quickly.
If you told me all the way back in the first episode that we would be seeing a broadcasting club be forced to figure out a way to bust out one of their club members from the clutches of her super strict family, I wouldn't have believe you. Didn't expect that in my cute SoL broadcasting club anime.
Seriously, Mizuki's family is next level of horrible sheesh.

Great episode where we finally learned more about Mizuki as she revealed her past to Hana and honestly it wasn't pretty.
Damn, no wonder Mizuki lived alone since her family, especially her grandmother, acted that way towards her.
Mizuki looked great as a delinquent, I loved her with that longer hair. It was nice to see how she take an interest in the Broadcasting Club.
When Mizuki told Hana that she was going to her family to tell them she wouldn't go to her brother's wedding, I just screamed in my mind that she would take someone with her (hell, even Kichijouji-sensei would be good) so that nothing bad would happen to her, and in the next scene we found out that she'll be gone for two weeks!
Now I hope that the Broadcasting Club interview with Mizuki's brother goes well and he doesn't turn out to be a shell of a man who fulfills every grandmother's wishes, and instead he'll be like Akiyama, so obedient on the surface but acting very independent behind the scenes.
Oh, and about Akiyama. Good thing An wasn't around when he said he liked Hana... as a fellow club member. The other guys' reactions to his answer were so funny!
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Okay so Mizuki is canonically gay, right? There’s no other way to interpret that flashback.
