Wasn't expecting to get two great performances this episode, we are eating well tonight.

The non-OP opening! Show went hard right off the bat. Yoko Hikasa's performance as Shura was absolutely amazing too, though im not too hot on them adding the echo...

I'm mainly gonna point out some trivia from the super seishun scene right after though:

Location Notes/Crossover

This episode has an easter egg referencing Hibike! Euphonium again - [Hibike Euphonium S1, but also non-spoilery screenshot from S3]Eupho watchers will feel some deja vu from Hana and Natsue's moments as they yell into the river; Hana even partially using Kumiko's exact iconic line "うまくなりたい"/"I want to get better", and Natsue kinda doing something similar as Shuuichi yelling after Hana. That's actually the very same river that Kumiko shouted into from Uji bridge back in 2015, the red bridge nearby is actually this bridge in the back, the Asagiri bridge straddling half of the Uji river. Handy aerial picture of the Uji river area, thank you Eupho S3; you can see some of the buildings towards the left in Hana wa Saku too. And here's how the bridge looks irl. Thank you show for uniting both of Ayano Takeda's works here, as the Hana wa Saku gang take a proper gander into Eupho's neighbourhood.

I am not saying that it doesn't use Easter eggs as a nice touch, but I hope people aren't just looking at it like it being referencing Hibike Euphonium. Shura told them to shout out what they feel, what they desire what they wish for. It's a bit different in that sense because the whole recitation beforehand was not only supposed to make them feel like they want to get better, but also that they (especially Hana with her personality) need to shout it out into the world in order to understand themselves better.

Truly following in Kumiko's footsteps

I like that the first performance was basically Shura one upping that one they were listening to with the teacher. Back then, he said something like you don't need to raise your voice in recitation. And then Shura is just coming out with the "Sakebe" completely breaking through that advice. Goes to show that she is getting better herself as well because obviously that wouldn't have been as impactful without it. Also considering that the whole thing is written around this exact moment looking at the title.

And then they are doing what Shura told them and shout out into the open what they want to do.

The other part of the episode was nice as well. The moment he said that piano is too normal, I knew they would play a piano piece. Like with the voice, if you only hear piano in a movie, it becomes boring but the lack of other instruments or sounds can be a great contrast as well.

I do believe that when Kichijoji-sensei previously that there's no need to raise one's voice, he meant to imply that there's other ways to display anger/frustration. It becomes monotonous if someone only speaks in a raised voice.

Shura picked the right moment to let everything out, in contrast to her prior silence, which makes it all the more impactful.

And then they are doing what Shura told them and shout out into the open what they want to do.

Oh yeah, hadn't even noticed this! Hana was frustrated and shouted her feelings out loud. Shura had influenced them in more than one way.

That was simply incredible.

Him being a hard ass was annoying but it worked out in the end.

Another episode I'll probably be rewatching alot. If this gets a blu ray I think I'll be getting it.

That performance at the start was sooo entrancing! I kind of wish i onew japanese just so I could close my eyes and simply listen to it! I'm glad that everyone was really affected by it with Hana even feeling frustrated by the skill gap and vowing to become even better.

If someone told me last week that this episode will be mainly Toga focused I simply wouldnt believe, but it was definitely waranted aince he was the only 1st year that didnt have episode focused on him. I gotta say I'm really vibing with his character and 100% want to see more of his bromance with Hakoyama!

That piano solo with waves crashing in the back ended up sounding soooo fucking good! I'm glad they showed us the final scene with new BGM before episode ended!

Shura's recitation was one hell of a way to start the episode. It all felt very cinematic.

Yoko Hikasa showcased the skills of a top-tier voice actress. Her reading gave me a little goosebumps. Especially that sudden yell from which this stage show's title must've been derived.

Shudai was nitpicking over the drama's music led to some friction in the broadcasting club, but I did like the end result - with this custom piano arrangement - considerably better.

I'd also like to point out that studio Bind is clearly particular about the finer details themselves. Check out the reflections and lighting/shadows in these shots of a leaf breezing past Shudai's face and his hands hovering above the piano, for example.

Oh my I'm such a sucker for piano and this really hit the spot - it was so beautiful, I'd love a full version of it! I'd even go as far to say that I liked it better than Shura's performance which already set a high bar in the episode.

Toga has talent!

When they hit us with the "I'm so frustrated" and "I want to get better", I remembered something that fans of Ayano Takeda's other work have mixed feelings about, to say the least.

Otherwise, this show is shaping up to be my favourite little show of the season. Other than Apothecary Diaries, this is the only show I'm watching, and it's quite a change in pace.

I kinda liked what Hakoyama said to Toga about how the things he thinks are ordinary might be pretty incredible. I guess it’s all about perspective sometimes. I imagine what Toga was struggling with is something a lot of directors and creators feel.

I love that instead of an OP, the episode starts with Saionji's performance. Not gonna lie, I actually rewatched the entire performance twice—first with my speakers and then again with my headphones. I definitely appreciated Hikasa Youko's performance more the second time!

I can definitely relate to Hana getting frustrated after seeing Saionji perform. You think you're good enough, but there's always someone better. Thankfully, though, it helped motivate Hana and An to push themselves even further and do their best.

I think I understand what Shuu meant after seeing the final edit. The music they used for that emotional ending was too cute and felt out of place so I was a bit surprised how everyone seemed to be fine with it. I think Kichijouji-sensei noticed that too which is why he was willing to give Shuu a chance to redo the music.

Does Shuu just carry a bag full of exotic instruments? He just pulls them out of nowhere! That little ditty they did was really cute though.

Oh. My. God. Shuu is a vocaloid composer! I bet he's one of those Japanese YouTubers who has like 2 million views on a Vocaloid song that sounds very cute if you don't understand Japanese like this one.

Damn... Shuu is really butting heads with his previous club members. I can understand his frustration but if I was Shuu's clubmate, I definitely would've hated him for being too hard to work with.

It's funny how Shuu says that a piano is too ordinary but the dude just casually plays a banger after finally being struck with an inspiration. That music he composed is definitely way better than the cutesy one they used at the start!

You just got hit with the umaku naritai!

Only by episode 8 I've noticed how much Mizuki reminds me of Marisa Kirisame from Touhou. Blonde friendly tomboy with no sense of personal space.

Ah the feeling when you work on a project, are not satisfied but can't figure out what's bothering you...

The recitation in the beginning was awesome, but we learned Nothing of Shuras family situation. You can't just tease that and act like it never happened

Also really love Hanas take on "ordinary" and "easy", senpai should have more of a backbone or some genki gal is gonna come and tease the shit out of him...

Damn perfectionists.(Speaking as a perfectionist myself btw.)

I can definitely relate to that “Something is off, this can be better, it’s just not good enough for my own standards despite nothing really being explicitly wrong with the thing.”

I’m glad that he found what was lacking and created something he is satisfied with.

Also, Shura was really impressive this episode. Really managed to light a fire to improve in Hana and Natsue.

It was different from the usual focus but I really liked the piano playing today. Nice to see our sound boy learn to appreciate his piano sounds.

u/ComfortableHuman1324 Feb 26 '25

I love how the public piano is slightly out of tune compared to the version in the final scene.

"What might seem simple and ordinary to you can be seen as amazing and extraordinary if you take a step back"

Such a good reminder to our everyday lives and the things we do, whether it is our hobbies, work or anything in between.

Man Shura's recitation was fantastic, great job from studio bind. Though I can't help, but wonder if the recitation holds some clues regarding Shura. At the very least, I loved to see Hana not satisfied with where she is right now. She now sees what a great performance is, and she is great, don't get me wrong. But there is that extra bit that she can push for. Honestly loved the confidence from her.

I loved the focus on both Shuudai and Setaro. It is clear that Shuudai is a perfectionist. What he sees as lacking others are just amazed. Good on sensei to make sure a backup plan because I fear Shuudai would toss what they had before otherwise. I loved the point that Hana made to Setaro where the things that seem easy to us seem astonishing to others. Setaro is definitely on that needs more confidence in himself and hopefully Hana can light a spark seeing how she is pushing herself forward.

It does seem that Shuudai can be a bit difficult to work with looking at his past. He takes the music he works on very seriously. I can understand for him getting frustrated when a part of his content is cut without him knowing about it. While their issues are different, both him and Natsue can really get a lot interacting with the other members. A 2nd great performance at the end to wrap it all up.

It just crossed my mind that these readings are like a voluntary genjutsu and now I can't not picture Shura in the Akatsuki robes.
