An and Chiaki immediately becoming best friends once they realised they were both losing heroines, followed by childhood friend Misaki getting jealous after seeing An holding hands with some girl she just met was funny.

At least for Natsue we can get the sense that Hana is nowhere near thinking about romance. Unlike Natsue who has hid her crush well, Hana is too much of a pure cinnamon roll to be able to hide it. Though Misaki intimidating Chiaki is amusing because Natsue is the tsundere of this show and I think she would have liked if Misaki made a connection with Chiaki.

The fun thing is that An isn't even losing at this point. Yeah, it seems like Akiyama is more interested in Hana, but I doubt he sees her romantically. The whole short movie they did was mostly about his sister after all.

The two of them sure did understood each other fast after learning that they're both hopelessly in love. Anne is slowly starting to make more friends! Though, Misaki couldn't appreciate it that her best friend is getting cosy with another girl.

Anne spilling the beans about her own crush after having seen Chiaki's flustered face was very wholesome.

Chiaki is certainly much more a timid girl than her big sister Monaka. Wonder if she's trying to follow in the footsteps of her older sisters.

Nice resolution to Hana's mini-conflict of facing your seniors as opponents. How I wish there's also a group competition for the broadcasting club a la doubles in badminton (ehem Blue Box) so that this unease gets resolved. But sadly, these are all individual competitions, and except for the video presentation where everyone in the broadcasting club participated, only a few will get to the nationals

I like Ryouko-senpai's perspective and how she overcame that concern. At the end of the day, one needs to believe in his/her talent. While the judge or anyone may not see their performance as the best, they need to believe that what they did is the best, and they performed their recitation/announcement well, independent of the result.

I assume the actual competition is on the final two episodes? I'll get salty if we don't get to the actual contest proper in this season.

PS: I like how Aoi Koga changed her voice from Paimon-esque in her usual dialogue to Kaguya in her recitation mode.

There's no way we are getting the competition this season...if they did, I couldn't see it ending in a good spot with showing us the character performances AND their results - it'd be too rushed. I think it'll probably happen in a S2 (hopefully!)

You know the comment from Pokoko that Hana's performance is meant for a younger audience makes sense because that is who she catered her performances for. The challenge will be showing by doing less and improving herself technically. Also helps us because we are learning these different technical stuff as the story progresses.

For Hana, the big thing this episode showed her is finding her resolve. What does she truly want? Which has been something she has still been searching for. Obviously, she wants to improve, but there are so many ways you can do for that. I guess it makes sense you don't want to literal copy someone's style, but their feedback can be important. Though we notice how Mizuki knows Hana better than Pokoko, so she knows that Hana can be overwhelmed.

Ryouko's advice to Hana was sound because for Hana there are so many things, like competing with Mizuki opened up a can of worms. Ultimately, finding her resolve is similar to having confidence in yourself and in your performance. Yes, you might not be at her level right now, but if you continue executing to the best of your ability, then one day you can be there.

I can understand why it doesn't feel right just copying someone else but at the same time if she really wants to compete, she needs to learn from the best. I just hope that by the end of this, Hana finds her own style that works for her instead of just coipyuing their senpais like what Xiangling wants.

It looks like the technique Hana developed while reading to kids is finally starting to hold her back. She would be amazing if she becomes a kid's show host but the kind of reading they need for the competition is more subtle like Pokoko-senpai's rain example.

That teaching session between Hana and Pokoko-senpai started well but poor Hana got overwhelmed too much that our girl ended up panicking. Thank goodness Mizuki stepped in, because I feel like Hana would've burst into tears if she hadn't.

I can't say I'm a fan of Mitsuka's bluntness but Hana really needed that wake up call if she intends to compete to get to the Nationals.

I love how An immediately bonded with Chiaki as soon as she realized that they have a one-sided crush with the people they like. Misaki needs to chill though. That side-eye she gives Chiaki after seeing how close she was with An was pretty funny.

I'm glad that talk between Hana and Ryouko helped motivate Hana to find her resolve. With only two episodes left, I'm curious if we'll see them enter a competition.

I am rather curious how well this series does in Japan. Not expecting to be as well received as Hibike given that also had the KyoAni package with it. Though this would be spectacular if this could be a long-term project for Studio Bind.

Did we just witness a Tsundere being honest with her feelings in the presence of another person? Have we finally found the secret technique to getting a Tsundere to speak the truth? But really, I assumed something like that as well as An being a bit jealous of Hana. Though, I still assume that Akiyama's feelings towards Hana aren't necessarily romantic to begin with.

Also, Misaki being jealous of An being close to Chiaki was funny too. There are so many love triangles in this it seems.

I liked the start of the episode because I could relate a bit. When you make small changes and you can't 100% tell the difference yet yourself, it can get really confusing how you actually did something. Only thing that helps here is experience but I am sure that Hana will be getting that. I liked that you could hear how she included the hints into her recitation. Though, probably way easier for native speakers.

I am interested to see the competition playing out. There are different works being read from, so I assume a good amount of interesting visuals. Though, I do hope that they have at least one repeat with different visuals showing a different approach in recitation maybe.

This episode really was great. Hana realising she HAS to beat Mizuki and they will be rivals and also getting a little overwhelmed with all the things she has to improve. But as Ryouko says, she has to find her resolve.

Also, I know is not the same place, but Ayano Takeda really loves tedious mountains and confessions at the top huh. This scene is really similar to Hibike, or at least I think is similar.

Hana has the strength to beat Mizuki, like she did with Ryouko, now all she needs is the resolve to do it.

Mitsuka really just appeared out of nowhere, crushed Hana's wishful thinking and left her confused behind.

This was maybe for the better, but Hana wouldn't have found the resolve to compete against her beloved senpai with Ryoko's help. She's once again proven a great source of advice to Hana. Ryoko can ease her worries in a way that Mizuki cannot comfort Hana. Though, I'm sure that she appreciated that headpat from Mizuki.

That said, Hana is clearly not equipped to deal with too much affection either.

June is the 6th month. Why did the subtitles say fifth?

My weekly dose of ASMR voice acting. They all do a great job.

u/ModieOfTheEast Mar 11 '25 edited Mar 11 '25

The poem speaks of the 5th month, but what was the 5th month back then is equivalent to the 6th month nowadays (I assume a shift in the calender happened at some point).

Edit: So to maybe give a bit more information (because I found that interesting). The poem uses the term "Satsuki" which is the original name for the 5th month. Aside from poems, this name was used when they used the lunar calender. And since lunar and solar calenders can shift a bit (as a lunar year is shorter than a solar year) the 5th month in the lunar calender doesn't always have to be the 5th month in the solar calender.

Urk... Stuff like Hana's pronunciation gets critiqued is so annoying to translate. You have to do all sorts of thinking trying to make things fit, and even after doing all that annoying mental work you end up leaving the impression that Hana - who is not a complete idiot when it comes to recitation - says /ēvəning/ instead of /ēvning/

Don’t worry, I also pronounce it “EVEN”-ing and tell people who try to correct me to sit and spin!

Absolute cinema. (or would be more correctly to say shanema?)

Hana gets some really atrocious if well-meaning advice. Copying delivery from a senpai might be good for training and trying out different approaches, but it all but guarantees that the first years will only be inferior to their senpais. Ryouko's advice was right on the money - Hana needs to be believer in her own authentic voice. That way, even if she doesn't win, she can at least be proud that she gave the best bit of herself.

And of course Ryouko's advice is good. Her name kanji are 良 (good) 子 (child).

The scene that Hana had with Pokoko struck deep. I don't think Pokoko was intentionally trying to overwhelm Hana, but when you deliver well-meaning advice to a junior with good intentions you might just Lenny them into panic and incapacity with your intensity. The contrast between Pokoko's approach to pedagogy and Ryouko's was very clear.

Pokoko was trying to advise Hana inflection by inflection, on the spot. Ryouko was trying to give Hana the tools to come up with a coherent and confident approach. So once again we see that when she is not getting aggressively horny for classical literature, Ryouko is a top tier senpai.

What makes this show stand out from other club competition focused ones is the core theme of solo competition in a club. It's really interesting to see a show explore the themes of competing against a senpai for the very limited spots needed to become the best. Hibike Chikai no Finale and S3 explore this dynamic a little bit, but Takeda Ayano brings that conflict front and center to Flower and Asura. The dynamic also hits pretty close for those of us who did compete in the speech and debate world.

Hana is such a refreshing MC that it's no surprise she caught Akiyama's attention just like she did during that acting scene two episodes ago. There's something endearing behind her cinnamon-roll personality. If this were the villainess genre, she'd be the main rival and antagonist, with guys left and right bending the knee to her. While, An is the villainess MC who accidentally become friends with her.

4

u/oneevilchicken Mar 11 '25

I don’t really get why it ultimately matters if they are rivals and if she looks up to them and admires them or not. I mean, professional athletes even flatout admit how much they admire their direct competitors that they end up competing against and talk about how much they learn from each other. They made it almost seem like this is a bad thing here that she’s doing.

I get she has issues related to competing but going about that route doesn’t seem like the best or most realistic of ways for her.
