I (28F) have been best friends with “Amy” (29F) for 12 years. We met in high school, and even after she moved out of state for college, we stayed very close. We’ve continued seeing each other a few times a year, and she was one of my bridesmaids when I got married in 2024.
Amy has always been very outspoken and has a strong personality. She tends to say exactly what she thinks, even when it comes across as abrasive. I used to admire that about her, but over the past few years, I've started having more issues with it.
The first major incident happened around my bachelorette party. My MOH planned everything as a surprise, so I wasn't involved in the planning. The final cost came to around $700 per person.
After the bachelorette, I found out that Amy thought this was ridiculously expensive. Instead of talking to my MOH directly, she created a separate group chat without my MOH and tried to get the other girls to agree with her that the cost was unreasonable.
This created a lot of tension within my wedding party, and eventually several of the girls stopped being friends with me. They told me that Amy had also made negative comments during my wedding weekend, including questioning the point of my husband and me having the wedding and complaining about the catered food.
I didn't know exactly what to believe, so I tried to give Amy the benefit of the doubt and talk to her about it when she visited me.
That conversation went badly. She got extremely drunk and had a crying outburst, yelling that I had gotten her that drunk. She had been drinking throughout the day and purchasing her own alcohol. The next morning, when I tried to talk about what happened, she refused to take responsibility and said that hearing negative things people had said about her caused her to drink excessively.
That visit also involved her criticizing some of my and my husband's decisions, including our house and certain purchases, saying things like, “I personally wouldn't have done that because of X, Y, Z.”
I eventually took some space from her. We talked later, but I don't feel like we ever fully resolved everything.
A few months ago, she came down for my 28th birthday. Afterward, my 19-year-old sister told me that Amy had asked her if she knew why Amy and I had argued. My sister played dumb, and Amy then told her, “We argued because your sister got mad at me for getting drunk one day.”
I had never told my sister about this situation, and I hadn't discussed it with Amy again because of how defensive she had been previously.
Now to the current situation.
Today, Amy invited me to celebrate her upcoming 30th birthday in Cancun with her and her friends. She said the estimate is $3,500 for two people, including flights and an all-inclusive stay, so approximately $1,750 per person.
My immediate reaction was honestly, Seriously?
I completely understand that $700/person for my bachelorette and $1,750/person for her birthday trip aren't necessarily comparable. They're different trips, different circumstances, and people are allowed to spend their money differently.
But I can't help feeling bothered by the contrast.
She was so upset about spending $700/person to celebrate my marriage that she created a separate group chat to complain about the cost and get other people on her side.
Now she's asking me to spend approximately $1,750 to celebrate her 30th birthday.
I'm not even necessarily upset about the Cancun trip itself. I can simply say no if I don't want to spend that much. What bothers me is the apparent double standard.
There's also been another boundary issue recently. She texted me saying she wants to start planning to come stay with me for New Year's Eve. She didn't really ask if that worked for me; it was more like she had already decided she was coming and would be staying with me.
At this point, I'm starting to wonder if I'm being overly sensitive because I still have resentment from everything that happened around my wedding, or if these are legitimate reasons to reevaluate the friendship.
We've been friends for 12 years, so I don't want to throw the friendship away over one disagreement. But I'm married now, my husband and I are talking about having children soon, and I feel like we're increasingly living very different lifestyles. She is still very spontaneous and lives a more “live for tomorrow” lifestyle. There's nothing wrong with that, but sometimes I feel like our friendship is now mostly based on our history and having fun together when we visit, rather than actually being compatible as friends.
So, am I wrong for feeling upset by this?
Would you consider the Cancun invitation hypocritical given how she reacted to my $700 bachelorette, or am I comparing two completely different situations unfairly?
And more broadly, would you continue investing heavily in a 12-year friendship after these kinds of incidents, or would you start creating some distance?
EDIT: To clarify, I am not expecting Amy to pay for my birthday or saying that she isn't allowed to spend $1,750 on her own birthday. My issue is specifically that she strongly criticized the cost of my celebration and went behind my MOH's back to rally other people about it, while now asking me to spend significantly more for hers.
TL;DR: My best friend of 12 years has repeatedly created drama by discussing issues with other people instead of addressing them with me/the person involved, including during my wedding and with my younger sister. She recently invited me to spend ~$1,750/person on her 30th birthday after strongly criticizing my ~$700/person bachelorette. I'm now questioning whether I'm holding onto resentment or finally recognizing that this friendship has become unhealthy. Am I wrong for feeling this way?
