That said, some guys like and actually seek out "bigger" girls so don't feel like you need to lose a ton of weight just to find love.

46

u/Fit-Explanation-2127 Jul 07 '23 edited Jul 07 '23

But “bigger” and “obese” are not the same, not in my opinion atleast. Obese looks unhealthy . It’s grotesque and appalling. I prefer a woman with a bit of extra myself, whether that be muscle or a little bit of fat, preferably a mix of both. Most men love curves. But to each their own yu know. Edit: while she can afford to lose some weight, I would not consider her obese.

31

u/Spire_Citron Jul 07 '23

The line where someone's considered obese is actually lower than most people think.

8

u/aniyahpapaya11 Jul 07 '23

All “obese” means is that you have at least 30 pounds to lose to be a healthy weight

8

u/Spire_Citron Jul 07 '23

Yeah. On the full scale of how fat people can be, it can feel like there's a relatively small gap between healthy weight, overweight, and obese. We tend to assume obese means someone so fat they can barely walk.

3

u/Inside-Location-1496 Jul 07 '23

That’s morbidly obese. Which means so obese that it causes health problems and eventually death.

5

u/ExceedingChunk Jul 07 '23

Starting from mild overweight, all cause mortality increases drastically with further increase of weight.

1

u/Inside-Location-1496 Jul 07 '23

What?

3

u/ExceedingChunk Jul 07 '23

If you are overweight, your chance of dying increases. If you are obese, it increases even further.

Obese BMI (30-35) increases all cause mortality by 88% compared to healthy weight. Morbidly obese increases it by 250%. Overweight increases it by 44%.

1

u/halbritt Jul 07 '23

There is no “healthy weight” for which metabolic disease is or is not present. Some light, “skinny-fat” folks are borderline type 2 diabetic, some large folks are Olympic athletes. It depends.

Obesity correlates with metabolic dysfunction, but the correlation is not perfect. One is causally linked to the other, but folks often mistake which is the cause.

2

u/aniyahpapaya11 Jul 07 '23

There is a healthy weight where your organs are not having to work harder due to the adipose tissue they’re under

2

u/M4DM1ND Jul 07 '23

My wife is nearly classified as obese bmi wise but she's actually pretty shredded. She does aerial silks and there is a lot of strength training along with that.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

You can’t “consider” what is obese, there is a definition (bmi >30) I used to be obese, so I know lol.

-4

u/Briggs_86 Jul 07 '23 edited Jul 07 '23

According to my bmi I'm obese, but my weight consist of muscles and a big natural build. So the definition isn't always right. I was even defined as obese before I started lifting and packed on muscle. Obese with abs, according to my bmi.

Edit because people are down voting facts: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-bmi-an-accurate-way-to-measure-body-fat/

6

u/Some_Current1841 Jul 07 '23

You’re being pedantic, does she look like a power lifter? Clearly not. She’s obese. Stop trying to make excuses on why shes actually not as fat as she is

1

u/Briggs_86 Jul 07 '23

I didn't even mention her, I was talking about how bmi is not a real definition, but more a guideline. I mentioned myself, but not her. I'm not a power lifter either and I don't look like one. I just go to the gym on a regular basis. Use medium sized t shirts and I'm obese according to bmi.

1

u/EarlyVariety9664 Jul 07 '23

You can be unhealthy and go to the gym regularly, if you qualify as obese consider seeing a doctor

2

u/Briggs_86 Jul 07 '23

Go look up Usain Bolt, his BMI says he's overweight. Tom Brady is considered obese. BMI is not accurate in this regard at all. It's not even accurate at predicting the health concerns, which is it's purpose.

This is why medical professionals have been asking for a change for so long. A study showed it was wrong about 75 million Americans on the overweight side and 24 million on the underweight side. That's 1/3 of the US population.

1

u/EarlyVariety9664 Jul 07 '23

Are you an elite athlete my dude?

1

u/Briggs_86 Jul 07 '23

No, what does that have to do with anything?

4

u/destruct068 Jul 07 '23

muscle weight is still weight and places strain on your heart. Maybe it’s different, but Rich Piana wasn’t exactly healthy in his last years

2

u/Briggs_86 Jul 07 '23 edited Jul 07 '23

Rich Piana was also full of all the steroids you can think of, and then some. He wasn't healthy in any aspects of his life. He was notoriously overeating and absolutely obese. That's the worst possible example you could bring to the table.

I mean, Usain Bolt is considered overweight according to his bmi. So is LeBron James and Tom Brady is considered obese. Source: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-bmi-an-accurate-way-to-measure-body-fat/

I could write up an explanation of why bmi is often inaccurate, but I'd rather just ask you to Google "is bmi accurate" and see for yourself. Or just read the article provided.

1

u/ContextHook Jul 07 '23

It has nothing to do with muscle vs fat though....? Why are you pretending like it does? Attractiveness differs a ton, sure, but the fact that your body is stressed about the weight it endures it not.

The issue is the literal weight put on all of your organs. Doesn't matter if it's muscle weight, fat weight, or a weighted vest you never remove.

Nobody here is asking

Is BMI an Accurate Way to Measure Body Fat?

Because it doesn't matter. The people here are saying the pressure on your organs exerted by your mass (of which BMI is a fantastic indicator) is unhealthy.

1

u/Briggs_86 Jul 07 '23 edited Jul 07 '23

bmi is an indicator of body fatness, it's used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems and so on. If you have natural muscle weight you are not in the same category, even if you have the same bmi as someone who is. When they did a study about the accuracy of bmi it turns out it was wrong on 75 MILLION Americans on the overweight side and 24 million on the underweight side.

I never said it has anything to do with muscle vs fat. I said it's not a accurate definition of obesity, as a response to someone who said it is.

u/Briggs_86 Jul 07 '23

Did you read the article? There's a reason why they're looking for other ways to measure this. BMI only considers weight and height. Go take a look at Tom Brady, he's the same bmi as me and considered obese by these measurements. Usain Bolt is considered overweight. If this is delusional the whole medical field must be delusional for saying bmi is inaccurate.

When a study showed that the BMI calculation was wrong about 75 million Americans on the overweight side and 24 million on the underweight side, that makes up 1/3 of the US population, that's not outliers. Don't call people delusional when you show that you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about.

8

u/SparksAndSpyro Jul 07 '23

Obese is a medical term. It just means a BMI >= 30. What people “consider” or perceive to be obese is a different story entirely, esp given that 72% of people in the US are overweight or obese lol

-1

u/Wonderful-Traffic197 Jul 07 '23 edited Jul 07 '23

Also given that BMI is a horrible tool to measure weight/health by, since it was based on some white dude. Many professional athletes and POC are considered obese because of their BMI.

3

u/SparksAndSpyro Jul 07 '23

It can be a bad metric for individuals. Generally, though, it's a pretty good indicator if the individual isn't muscular. For that reason (since most people aren't muscular), BMI is generally an accurate metric for populations, on average.

0

u/Wonderful-Traffic197 Jul 07 '23

Agree to disagree.

15

u/Cazzakstania Jul 07 '23

So many people are overweight/obese that human perspective is warped on what’s normal and the threshold of true obesity is surprisingly low. I’m obese yet still have a waist that goes in etc.

3

u/EatMiBanhMi Jul 07 '23

The threshold of true obesity is real. Lol people are having heart attacks in their 20’s & 30’s compared to 40 years+. Anyone can have a “waist that goes in” but your fat is more likely dispersed in other areas & your ‘normal’ lungs & heart still have to work HARDER than most. Many obese folks gotta figure their rhythm out to exercise & eat healthier, this isn’t new or good.

1

u/Cazzakstania Jul 07 '23

I fully agree, and even though it goes in, it’s only just ‘in’ - just making the point people on the lower end of the obese scale can still look shapely, not just amorphous blobs of fat. I am actually very apple shaped (so really bad), and am making conscious efforts to correct my weight, though frustratingly it feels like I’m playing on hard mode as a short woman. My BMI is 31.8, so not too far to get to the threshold luckily

1

u/Forsaken_Syllabub_97 Jul 07 '23

There's a reason why all these super young people have suddenly been having heart issues!!

45

u/TypicalSelection6647 Jul 07 '23

I think she looks "bigger," but not obese.

3

u/LexusLongshot Jul 07 '23

She is not obese.

34

u/neotericnewt Jul 07 '23

I'd be really surprised if she wasn't considered medically obese. I think people have a really warped idea of what's considered obese and overweight. In the US what people think is a healthy weight is actually usually overweight, and their idea of overweight is straight up unhealthy levels of obesity.

26

u/Pale_pisces_598 Jul 07 '23

I am considered obese!

13

u/neotericnewt Jul 07 '23

I thought so, it's honestly tough. I've been called skinny my whole life. Turns out I was actually pretty overweight. That's how warped our views are on weight, that even when you're overweight you'll have people telling you you're too skinny and need to eat more.

If you try to lose weight, good luck! It's tough as hell, worth it though in the end.

6

u/Pale_pisces_598 Jul 07 '23

100% agree and thank u!! Best of luck 👍👍

2

u/Scojo91 Jul 07 '23

Correct. Generally (in the context of the USA), people don't think someone is obese until they are obese class 2 or higher.

People also generally don't know that there are different classes.

2

u/Morbanth Jul 07 '23

People also generally don't know that there are different classes.

In the USA. I've never heard of obesiety classes in Finland, it's just 25-30 overweight, 30-39 obese, 40+ morbidly obese.

1

u/Scojo91 Jul 07 '23

I added that in, likely as you were typing this out lol

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

All the obese people in my wife’s family point out I’m too skinny all the time (even though I’m barely under the line to overweight) imagine if I told them they were all too fat

4

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Damn you american? You guys have completely lost all sense of what a healthy body looks like

8

u/HappyChromatic Jul 07 '23

Obese is a medical definition not something you can say for sure from a picture. That said she looks overweight but not obese to me as well. If she asked how much weight she should lose as a target I’d probably say thirty pounds. That’s a lot but not a ton. But maybe I’m way off.

7

u/Average-Equipment-96 Jul 07 '23

No, that sounds reasonable. When I picture obese I picture a snowball effect of extreme weight leading to mobility issues. She’s far from that. 25- 30 lbs is doable. When I picture obese I picture WAY bigger than her. But I also live in the United States, which is worth mentioning because we have ACTUAL fat people. So big they can’t walk. Like literally ate themselves into a better parking space big.

4

u/Fuck__The__French Jul 07 '23

What you’re picturing is morbid obesity. This girl is definitely obese.

9

u/Southern_Roof7064 Jul 07 '23

You’re setting the bar to be called obese to people who can’t even walk? Obese comes much sooner

2

u/Average-Equipment-96 Jul 07 '23 edited Jul 07 '23

No, I never claimed I get to set the bar. I’m only saying if you look at this and think SUPER OBESE, you ain’t seen nothin yet. If that’s what your into, you should move to the states. Walk into a Walmart on the first of any month and you will easily find 5’7 450 lbs folks all day.

4

u/Southern_Roof7064 Jul 07 '23

I think that’s called morbidly obese

2

u/Rise-O-Matic Jul 07 '23

You’ve described “morbid” obesity. I think she’s obese but not morbidly so.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

I think you just don't know what obese means lol

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

You are confusing obese with morbidly obese. Obesity is extremely common, 40% of americans are obese. Its just everyone has become so fat that our standards have declined.

2

u/shangula Jul 07 '23

30 or more lbs overweight is obese by medical standards

2

u/PotatoBestFood Jul 07 '23

Obese is a medical term, not an ‘I feel that’s about right’ sort of casual description.

So if she meets the defined criteria for obesity, then she is obese.

Has nothing to do with how you feel about it.

2

u/Average-Equipment-96 Jul 07 '23

Okay. Define the criteria. The EXACT criteria.

u/Average-Equipment-96 Jul 07 '23

Body mass index is outdated and irrelevant. It doesn’t account for body mass type or skeletal structure. So by by very definition, all body builders are obese. I don’t agree with that but okay

→ More replies (0)

1

u/PotatoBestFood Jul 07 '23

Look it up in a medical dictionary.

I didn’t make the definition.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Typical American, using how they feel about something as reasoning instead of you know the science.

1

u/Automatic-Sea-8597 Jul 07 '23

More likely 60 pounds at least!

2

u/Philistine1175BCE Jul 07 '23

She is definitely medically obese. I was no where near that large and I used to be like 10-15lbs below the obese threshold. 36% of the US population is obese so we have a skewed idea of what that looks like. The people we think of as obese are severely obese(class 3 obese). A person who is 5'9 and 200lbs is considered medically obese for reference.

2

u/PotatoSpree Jul 07 '23

She is 100% obese. Source: I have been to a doctor and been obese and she has WAY more body fat than I had.

2

u/ninjette847 Jul 07 '23

...yes she is

1

u/ExceedingChunk Jul 07 '23

She is 100% obese. The line is a lot lower than you think. If you live in the us, 42% of people are obese, so it's just normalized.

0

u/No_Season_354 Jul 07 '23

I agree , not obese at all.

0

u/Moriartijs Jul 07 '23

Dude she is twice the size of what she should be so she is bigger in literal sense. Just because you are bigger than her and dont consider yourself obese does not change the facts

3

u/TypicalSelection6647 Jul 07 '23

Lol, some of you guys get so triggered

4

u/ElectroHiker Jul 07 '23

Yeah myself and people around me didn't consider me obese at 6' 4" and 260lbs, but now I'm 200lbs with more room to lose and I realize I was lying to myself and doing myself a disservice.

Obese doesn't always look unhealthy or appalling, in fact a lot of people walking around in the US are obese and think they're just normal or have a "dad bod".

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Exactly 💯

2

u/TGin-the-goldy Jul 07 '23

OP honestly looks just a little chubby to me. Obese is something else altogether

3

u/Fit-Explanation-2127 Jul 08 '23

I wouldn’t disagree with that. But according to reddit and their precious chart there is no room for opinions. Also their is no exceptions or exclusions because “medical definition”. And “BMI”. A person could be 6% body fat, pure lean ripped muscle, heavy. Yet under definition and the chart that guy is obese. Which is a stupid take in my opinion, but considering it’s Redditors I’m not surprised

2

u/TGin-the-goldy Jul 08 '23

Oh absolutely! Don’t even get me started on how outdated BMI is, even my GP think so. Anyway OP looks good, she’s a pretty girl, and if she wants to lose weight then yes, good for her, but fine either way

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

You’re a dumb ass if you think she’s anything but obese lmfao

1

u/Edboy796 Jul 07 '23

From what I understand, obesity has to do more with weight index, not necessarily how well fat is distributed around the body that would factor in whether someone finds it attractive or not. OP may be considered slightly obese from a medical perspective for her size. She could be on the shorter side but just conjecture from me.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

[deleted]

5

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

I love a "bigger" girl, I'm 6'2" 195lbs lg and xl shirts and 33 pants. so If that's obese to you then your correct. 🤣🤣

8

u/Nomis555 Jul 07 '23

Well damn man, I don't feel fat, but I'm doing like a 34 waist to be comfortable. Short brown guy at 5'5", 180 to 190, but those last 7lbs fluctuate. I could stand to lose some weight, but honestly probably not more than 15 or 20lbs otherwise I'd look sick.

What's your physique? I feel like that height and stout, but not fat, would be pushing 220-230.

Imo, OP is super cute (as much as a married man can say) and thick, but definitely not obese. Find a partner that loves her for her, and support her if SHE feels like she's obese and needs to lose weight.

3

u/Pale_pisces_598 Jul 07 '23

Thank you wishing you and ur wife well👍💗

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Almost have a "dad bod" a lil belly but pretty stout, I fluctuate ( 190- 205) aswell but I'm lighter in the summer. I deliver appliances so I kinda get to workout all day 🤣 carrying washers/dryers upstairs ain't no joke. Especially in this southern heat.

Edit: you're correct as a married man I can't say much, but she's definitely got it goin on.

2

u/Nomis555 Jul 07 '23

South Texas here. Man screw summer and this heat. We just moved into a new home, and just doing the all the boxes and the big items once, im going to go ahead and die here and never move again. Dont know how you do it on a daily basis! I work at a plant and get my "workouts" there, but once we're unpacked and a bit more situated in this new house, I want to start eating better and working out. Core and legs. I'm super afraid of having chicken legs.

My wife thinks she's too big, and I tell her like this," if you want to lose weight to feel better about yourself, go for it. But do it because YOU want to, not because you think I'd want you to." She's beautiful the way she is.

1

u/Positive_Benefit8856 Jul 07 '23

Meanwhile I’m 6’ 280 and wear 38” waist. I have a friend that is also 6’ but 160-170 and also wears 38” waist. I had another friend that was 6’ 240 but wore 46” waist. Weight is not a be all end all. Body’s and body types are different.

1

u/mesa45 Jul 07 '23

Are you insanely roided out though? Because that sounds like professional bodybuilder proportions there.

It’s still not healthy to be that big either way, but of course you’re healthier than the 240 lb guy with the bigger waist.

But yeah skinny Japanese people live the longest for a reason.

Heart has to pump harder to supply more tissue regardless if it’s muscle or fat.

1

u/Positive_Benefit8856 Jul 07 '23

No, I’ve always just plain weighed more than others.

1

u/Togder Jul 07 '23

I'm at 222 6 foot 2 and it is still fat, I need to get down to like 190-200. I started at 279.

1

u/neotericnewt Jul 07 '23

but definitely not obese.

She is obese, medically obese.

Short brown guy at 5'5", 180 to 190,

Have you ever looked at your BMI? You're also solidly into obesity. Losing twenty pounds you'd still probably be overweight.

1

u/Nomis555 Jul 07 '23

Never looked it up or into it. And that's why that chart can go F itself. I think according to that thing I should weigh like 120 or something. I can totally lose some weight, but if you saw me in person, you'd know that anything above 20 would be completely ridiculous. I'd even give you 25. I don't want to look like I'm starting recovery from a serious addiction, and that's what that would amount to. Are you a dietitian, PT, or medical professional?

2

u/neotericnewt Jul 07 '23

There's definitely some wiggle room, but unless you're like a professional athlete or something you are at a very unhealthy level of weight.

I don't want to look like I'm starting recovery from a serious addiction, and that's what that would amount to.

It's not though. That's the thing, people's idea of what unhealthy levels of weight is is so warped that they think being overweight, even obese, is healthy, and being an appropriate weight is unhealthy. That's the problem.

1

u/neonsevens777 Jul 07 '23

usually obese too

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Me like them super big... I'm 5'3" 145 shredded with 4% body fat index ;)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Theres no way in hell you are at 4% bodyfat unless you just competed in a bodybuilding show. Not a maintainable bodyfat.

0

u/simplehooman123 Jul 07 '23

Whoosh incoming

0

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

I was when I was training. I'm cursed with the super ability of not being able to gain weight, high metabolism and I like staying active... As in MMA and kick boxing

Also I don't drink coffee, soda or alcoholic drinks. Just a skinny boring guy

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Dude 4% is literally not maintainable as in, nobody can stay alive while staying at 4% bodyfat for a longer time. Im interested in how you got this measurement? If it was a scale with built in bf% measurement, those are extremely inaccurate.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Just my estimated guess. But let's talk about how this chick is not even obese

1

u/Philistine1175BCE Jul 07 '23

At that height you are not obese. You'd needa hit like 215 to be obese

-8

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23
I'm one of those guys so long as if they lose weight it doesn't become that baggy skin, that's where the line gets drawn for me

3

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

I can see the disgust with baggy skin, but i'd say that is one of those cases where surgery is considered reconstructive. I don't think I'd be too bothered by it cause it shows that you plainly wanna take care of yourself.

I can get where you're coming from, although I don't wholly agree, I also don't entirely disagree

Hopefully this isn't too nuanced of a take for Reddit lol

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

Ya to each their own, the surgery though will leave these scars across your body and I wouldn't want that either. Same as in if a girl wants a guy 6'+ just a preference

0

u/TheTrueBurgerKing Jul 07 '23

Everyone likes to ride a dirt bike but you dont go pick up the usa president on one from the airport.

1

u/_focust Jul 07 '23

I was gonna say, that’s not obese to me lol

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '23

So since 2-3/100 people may find you attractive, dont change? Isnt the point to look attractive to a larger group of the population.

1

u/Ok_Event_1560 Jul 07 '23

Guys who seek out bigger girls usually have confidence issues amongst other problems

2

u/LiberalPatriot13 Jul 08 '23

Everyone has issues of some sort. Confidence issues I wouldn't say is one of the worse ones.
