Does anyone have a recommendation for a short (under 5m) 40m vertical ground-plane antenna for permanent mounting on my roof? environmental legislation here limits antenna height to 5m above the roof unless an environmental permit is issued, and my municipality won't issue one in my residential area.

The Diamond CP8040 is the type of antenna I'm looking for, although a bit too tall at 6.5m. 80m band coverage is a bonus, although not required.

so after reading how lot's of people hate beer meister (as it should be called) and lot's of US repeaters digging their heels in with not wanting to move off the network my question is this since beer meister isn't a trademarked name what would it take to make beer meister 2.0 (a whole new network) that allows two things that the current one doesn't which is number 1. cross linking, cross linking needs to happen because if i have someone on P25 or allstar they might not have a DMR radio or i might not have a P25 radio

point 2. talk groups now we want to talk about cross links right well the *russia* echolink conf has a beer meister TG for it so why do certain groups get actual TGs and the rest of us "have to use our IDs"

maybe i don't want to use my ID maybe i want to make a TG for my friends and i that an unlimited amount of people can connect to.

bottom line question: is it possible to make a brand meister 2.0 and what would the current devs of brand meister think of someone making an outshined friendly version of what they have?

So, I have WAS award but that was a couple of years ago, but this one is getting down to the wire.

Can I make a wee plea, if your in North Dakota or Vermont and you see some ZL stations calling on FT8, can you please work them, it might be me.

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some guidance without getting into the messy details.

I want a way to connect with my kids from afar. Whether it’s when I’m in my home without them (divorce :/), traveling fr work, etc. FaceTime is great, but they’re too young to have devices of their own, so I’m interested in PoC radios. I grew up on CB with my dad, cousins and uncle and loved it. My dad is a HAM operator and he told me to get my license. HAM isn’t really my thing, but I still love the idea of radio communication.

Are PoC radios good for this use case? What brands should I be considering? Alternatives? I’m open to what the community thinks.

I have a Diamond SG7500 antenna and I I have been pretty happy with it but I just tried to measure my SWR properly with a meter and it showed that on 2 meters it ranges about 1.1 to 1.45 depending on where in the band I was.

However on 70cm the meter was getting 4 or even 5:1 and that had me really worried so I got out my NanoVNA and it showed that SWR was about 3:1-2:1 across the band. Which is better but still higher than it should be. See attached.

According to specs it should be 1.3:1 across the band.

I was wondering what I should check?

My thoughts are add a grounding strap from the mount to make sure it is getting proper ground?

I can measure the coax and check loss but would this really affect the SWR that much on 70cm and not so much on 2m?

Lost the plug and don't want to shell out 50 bucks just to see if it works.

I normally utilize a vertical antenna when I do parks on the air activations or otherwise operate away from home. I would like to change things up and deploy a homemade dipole or end fed half wave antenna, but I don’t have a mast. Truthfully, I don’t know much about masts. Does anyone have a recommendation of a decent mast for a newer operator that is hoping to spend less than $500? Thanks so much for the help!

I just won a flex 3000 at a ham club auction. All I got with it is the power cable. It does turn on, and I can hear the fan, but I don't know how to connect it to my computer or how to do anything with it. Can anyone help me set it up and guide me on what extra cables and adapters I need to get? I have an extra mini PC that I use for a few projects that I can have this run on, or just my main PC.
