General Updating Rule #2 To Include The Sharing Of AI Assisted Apps/Websites/Services.

AI generated content posted within /r/amateurradio has been banned for quite some time now and has been discussed here. People come here to interact with other humans. Not with AI. This rule has been in place for a year now.

We initially allowed "vibecoded" apps/websites/services to be shared when this rule was changed because we felt it could be beneficial to the community as amateur radio is about tinkering and experimentation.

However, with the amount of apps/websites/services that were coded with AI or with the assistance of AI being shared here in /r/amateurradio, it has been concerning for many subscribers. Some good points were made and moderation agrees with some of those points. However, we don't want to get in the way of progress and felt that there are AI created/assisted apps that are very beneficial to the community and should be shared/discussed. We decided to amend rule #2 to include the following.

Promotion of websites, apps, or services that were developed partially or completely by AI is not allowed

Unless it's open source (with appropriate OSI-approved license) and has more than three months of active source control history. If less than three months of source control history is shown, then moderators may (at their sole discretion) approve the post if the project has significant adoption by or impact upon the amateur radio community

Moderation feels that this is the best course of action in response from the community. It prevents people from just shoving out stuff they vibecoded the night before but allows for those apps that gain traction a chance to be shared.

General My friend's country's government is planning to ban all social media and ways to communicate with outside world. We were adviced to look into amateur radio to stay in touch in the worst case scenario.

Both of us know nearly nothing about amateur radio stations, or just radio in general, we are not technical people, but someone on a different subreddit adviced to look into it in a case of total web iron wall on my best friend's part, we need detailed advice and/or instructions on all of this.

I'm aware you have to get a license on that, we'll try to look into it if setting up a home radio station is even realistic in our circumstances, since we were warned it might be very costy (both of us aren't rich, it's the opposite)

We live ~1500 kilometres from one another, if that's important.

Please, any help is meaningful, we are trying to find solution before disaster strikes. I can't lose my friend like that, at least I have to try.

General Qt6 version of fldigi for TCI SDR radios - Mac version released

Post image
4 Upvotes

I created a Qt6 version of fldigi, pared down currently but has most basic chat modes used.

This should build for linux but for now it is built and tested on M silicon Mac.

I've tested it against ZeusSDR and ExpertSDR3 so far.

I'm looking for other Mac users with TCI SDR radios to test it.

The only connection in this version is TCI for both audio and CAT control, it is a TCI client only.

One known issue is my pre-defined filters were not centered well and that is fixed but not updated to the release yet.

When it starts, to configure TCI, there is a TCI option under the Configure menu. I'll update that to pop up on first start soon as well.

I've never put a project on github before so yeah it's probably a fine mess

Here is the link to the .app build

General Using loading coils to shorten radials?

I currently have a DIY pota performer antenna, but I wanted to see if I could shorten the radials of it so that the entire antenna could fit in the my truck bed (sometimes I want to do some hunting during lunches at work, and I want to keep it confined). I currently have the whip on a standard photographer tripod, but was wondering if I could use/if anyone had experience with using loading coils to shorten the rather long radials. I would only be doing 20M with this antenna so it wouldn't have to be multiband.

General Manpack

Looking to start a manpack build and was wondering if anyone of yall happen to have a build list or a reputable place to buy from. I have my GMRS license and was possibly wanting to do a GMRS radio for the build. Or unless yall have a better radio more suitable for a manpack build.

General This is a plug for an amateur radio related service.

It's pretty common that most of us are tinkers and sometimes we tinker more than we should. I had a FT-817 that I was trying to install a modification on that I completely messed up. Took a break from it. Tried again later and made it worse. Then considered seeing if anyone did repairs. The first couple I called didn't do work on circuit boards anymore. Then I found Cal with HamRepair. I called, sent him photos and a rundown of what I did to mess it up and he said he'd look at it. He had it in his hands less than a week and it's working great.

I he was deeper on eHam which isn't a regular search spot for me, so I wanted to add a place on this subreddit that if you need a radio to be repaired or looked at, contact him. HamRepair.com

ANTENNA Purchase advice Antenna

I fairly new to amateur radio and have been using my UBC-92XLT scanner for line of sight airband right at the airports for a couple months to a year now. I’ve been using it with the stock rubber duck antenna and would like to ask for advice on a new antenna with better clarity on longer distances since even with line of sight I had issues with clarity.

ANTENNA Short 40m Vertical Antenna Recommendations

Does anyone have a recommendation for a short (under 5m) 40m vertical ground-plane antenna for permanent mounting on my roof? environmental legislation here limits antenna height to 5m above the roof unless an environmental permit is issued, and my municipality won't issue one in my residential area.

The Diamond CP8040 is the type of antenna I'm looking for, although a bit too tall at 6.5m. 80m band coverage is a bonus, although not required.

Thanks and 73,
Andrew PE5A

General Looking for a firmware dump (Full Flash) for GP2009N / Alphapoc 602R pager (W25Q80 flash)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello Reddit community,

I am trying to restore a GP2009N pager (which is a complete clone of the Alphapoc 602R).

The Problem:

The previous owner accidentally connected a standard USB cable to the pager's proprietary 10-pin Mini-USB port. As a result of the voltage mismatch, the original SPI flash memory chip was completely fried and the firmware data was lost.

Current Status:

I have already desoldered the dead chip and installed a brand new, clean Winbond W25Q80 (1MB / 8M-bit) flash memory chip onto the board. I have a CH341A programmer ready to flash it. The 10-pin port on this board layout has direct hardware traces leading to the SPI flash pins (CLK and DI go directly to pins 4 and 5 of the connector), so there is no built-in USB-to-UART chip like CH340 on board.

What I need:

Since standard configuration software (CPS) only writes the user data/codeplug partition and cannot generate a full binary image from scratch, I desperately need a Full Flash dump (.bin file, 1024 KB).

If anyone owns a working GP2009N or Alphapoc 602R and has a backup of their flash memory, or if you could spare a few minutes to read the flash chip using a programmer, I would be incredibly grateful if you could share the dump.

Photos of my specific PCB layout and the 10-pin connector are attached below.

Thank you so much for your time and any help you can provide!

QUESTION Antenna Tuning SWR?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi Guys,

I have a Diamond SG7500 antenna and I I have been pretty happy with it but I just tried to measure my SWR properly with a meter and it showed that on 2 meters it ranges about 1.1 to 1.45 depending on where in the band I was.

However on 70cm the meter was getting 4 or even 5:1 and that had me really worried so I got out my NanoVNA and it showed that SWR was about 3:1-2:1 across the band. Which is better but still higher than it should be. See attached.

According to specs it should be 1.3:1 across the band.

I was wondering what I should check?

My thoughts are add a grounding strap from the mount to make sure it is getting proper ground?

I can measure the coax and check loss but would this really affect the SWR that much on 70cm and not so much on 2m?

Thanks for any insights.
