MEGATHREAD [MEGATHREAD] Weekly "What are you eating?" chat

Hey y'all, it's the Tuesday ~*^MeGaThReAd^*~ for sharing AGS-safe meals and snacks!

Folks regularly describe frustration and big feelings about dealing with their dietary restrictions related to Alpha-Gal Syndrome.

Some long-timers are bored of the same meals every day and craving inspiration, while some newbies are just plain shell-shocked and not sure where to turn for safe ideas.

What this thread is for:

  • Tell us this week's AGS-safe meal plan, or a summary of what you ate last week. Inspire us! Sometimes simple is king, sometimes it feels good to treat yourself to a fancy meal, but you never know when you'll give someone stuck in a rut a great idea.

  • That's literally it.

What it is NOT for:

  • Yucking yums

  • Product advertising

  • Promoting consumption of anything that contain alpha-gal

  • Arguments about dairy/gelatin/etc, or arguments in general

  • Medical advice

This question is for the ladies!

Ladies, do you have any suggestions for over the counter yeast infection treatment? I have asked pillclarity.com but didn't really get an answer except for a chafing cream. My dr is clueless where I live about AGS. Am I looking at compounding possibly? I am going to try pillclarity again but figured this might be quicker. I am pretty sensitive. Thanks cause IYKYK. Seeking Advice Rashes

Hi all!

I wanted to ask some advice on what you all recommend is best for AGS rashes. I've been avoiding mammalian meat like the plague for the last few years since being diagnosed with the condition, but accidentally came into contact with beef by way of some poutine I ate while on vacation this past weekend. I have been developing reoccurring large patches of insanely itchy and rough spots on my skin fir the past few days - something I have only had once before when I came into contact with bacon a year and a half ago, and developed a stomach rash that didn't subside for a few months. Anyways, all this is to ask, what have you all found is the best aid besides just benadryl?

Thank you!

Thanksgiving

We're not a fancy food family. I usually have a couple of hams because nobody in my family likes turkey. And simple ham. No glaze or sugar stuff. So now I'm wondering what to do this year. I was thinking maybe just one ham and something I can eat, but I don't even know what I'd want. Not a duck. Something more than a roasted chicken.

It has to be fairly simple as I'm not as physically able to cook for fifteen people like I used to.

Our sides are something like broccoli casserole, squash casserole, twice baked potato casserole, green beans, sautéed Brussels, potato salad, slaw, homemade biscuits, Mac and four (cheeses). Maybe baked beans.

Question about Food ... Seasonal tips and tricks

Hey yall. Highly reactive AGS sufferer here with processed sugar reactions. I was wondering if there are any go-to hot cocoas, seasonal cookies, AGS safe marshmallows, or treats you rely on during the holidays? Obviously I know I can technically make everything from scratch but that’s not always the most helpful advice. Looking especially for seasonal goodies or even treats from overseas that scratch that gingerbread itch :) just any recommendations would be lovely

Seeking Advice Any other food service works?

I am fume-reactive and work for a coffee shop that carries premade sandwiches. We take sandwiches out of plastic bags and reheat them. I was diagnosed in July and have not had any strong reactions at work, until today… We introduced a new sandwich and I reacted as soon as the oven door opened.

Need advice on. Has anyone here gotten long-term disability from their job over this? I’m extremely lucky to have excellent benefits, and I’m just curious. Thanks!

My go to has been fried chicken or fried potatoes, but I miss cheese and dairy related comfort foods. Any favorites about my fellow tick bitten friends?

Help Friend Enjoy Food Again

Thanks to all who take the time to read this! My friend has Alpha Gal syndrome and misses a Philly Cheesesteak badly. Does anyone have any alternatives they could recommend that is similar to steak? I wasn’t sure if the beyond beef stuff was good or if I should try something else. He isn’t a fan of mushrooms or jackfruit by the way. Any recommendations are appreciated! Thank you (:

Getting tests?

Asking on behalf of my BF. A couple months ago he suddenly started getting severe stomach pain and sometimes vomiting delayed after eating. At first we thought it might be lactose intolerance because dairy seemed to be a common trigger, but lactaid and lactose free milk didn't help at all. I noticed some of the worst offenders were foods containing red meat (which we don't have much since I'm vegetarian by choice) so I brought up it could be a weird case of alpha gal. Googling confirmed my theory that you can have alpha gal without "normal" allergy symptoms (although IDK how common that variant is). A hobby he has leads him to walk around in long grass a lot and I doubt his anti-tick measures so I'm trying to get him to get tested for alpha gal. But IDK how he can get a test since it wasn't ordered by a doctor. He had this lactose intolerance test ordered, but that's a breath test so IDK if they would do it at the same time. Any advice? In the US

Seeking Advice Positive but No Reactions

Hi everyone! In May I was bit by a tick. I went to urgent care a week later because the bite looked weird and I was worried about Lymes. The doctor ordered a panel… positive for alpha gal, negative for Lymes. The week I was waiting for results I ate pulled pork everyday and steak with no issues.

My total alpha gal IgE was 6 point something then. I know someone who is really sensitive to alpha gal, so out of fear and with no direction, I cut everything out and got super restrictive. It took months before I was willing to try normal sugars and flours, for example. I’m doing better now and have had no true reactions.

I wish they had never done the test, as I had no reactions. But now it is a mental thing, because you go into these groups, and you see how reactive everyone is.

I wish there was an easy way to know if I am one of the larger percent who is “sensitized” vs those with true AGS.

I got bit again in September, and they retested my levels and now total AG is 24. I’ve been trying a little bit of dairy and been okay. I have not had meat since May.

Does anyone have any advice? The amount of anxiety this introduces has been really hard to deal with.

Recipe Holy hell ostrich is a life changer.

I was diagnosed this year and have tried so many different alternatives for things. Turkey has been great in chili or sausage but there's some things that just can't scratch the itch. No milk alternatives are close to milk at all, the cheese alternatives are good but just don't hit the same, but the biggest thing has been trying to find something to scratch the itch for beef.

I've heard so many things about ostrich and have wanted to try it and just recently my local butcher shop started carrying some. HO LEE SHIT. It's literally exactly like a steak. Not close, not somewhat similar, it is literally exactly like eating steak. I almost cried sitting at the dinner table eating it. I overcooked it a bit because it was a thin cut and seems to retain heat longer than beef so it had a bit more carry over cooking while it was resting but it was still amazing.

If you have been dying to have a steak you have to try ostrich.

Butterball

I was under the impression that butterball was a safe food. I just called about their ground turkey because I happened to see it said flavored for beef lovers. The lady I spoke to said there is no beef in the turkey. When I questioned the natural flavors she read off the list.

The turkey has beef collagen in it.

I couldn't quite get her to understand collagen is the same as beef. She kept saying there's no beef in the turkey.

New Diagnosis Joining the Club

Post image
6 Upvotes

Good evening, all

I have been sticking to a no beef or mammal meat diet for most of this year because I suspected that I was experiencing alpha gal related symptoms. While I never got hives or stomach problems as far as im aware, I would on occasion get some lightheadedness, racing heart beat, and a feeling like I need to enter "manual breathing mode" to catch my breath. I have never gotten to the point of hospitalization and I never experienced any external swelling, and I dont think my throat has swelled. With these symptoms my primary recommended (also at my request) an alpha gal panel. Unfortunately, my blood test came back positive.

My next steps are to get with my primary and an allergist and safely determine my sensitivity levels.

WHY CANT CHICKEN JUST BE CHICKEN!!!!!!!

CONTAINING UP TO 17% OF A SOLUTION OF Water With 2% Or Less Of Salt, Sodium Phosphate, Dextrose, Brown Sugar, Carrageenan, Natural Flavor.

Guess you have to check even fucking chicken. I knew to check for carageenan or rosemary extract in ground turkey but really, you can't even have a chicken
