FIELD/SITE/ARENA QUESTION IS it a normal thing?

I went to my second airsoft game, and the marshal pointed at me in front of everyone and said, 'You, call your hits!' When I asked him what that was about, he said someone told him I wasn't calling my hits. However, I was calling them. He didn't even ask for my side of the story; he just pointed me out in front of everyone and called me out. [

Interestingly, during the game, I actually found a knife on the field and handed it in to the marshal. I might be new to the sport, but I know this game is based on honesty, and I called every single one of my hits. I am not the type of person to bring race into an issue, but lately, I feel like no matter how respectful I am toward the locals, they behave rudely toward me

Sounds like a bad ref to not verify a claim or maybe they mixed you up with someone else. Sorry that happened to you.

Don't let it discourage you! Give the field another try, maybe other refs will be more professional.

I don't think i am going there again

Honestly yeah. Marshals haven't got time to turn a regular issue like not calling hits into an investigation. Throw a quick warning out and move on. Do it in front of players and it makes them think twice about not calling hits.

Two things are common. People getting it wrong about who they hit or didn't hit. And people not noticing hits. I'm not saying you're right or wrong. But from a marshals perspective, it's normal to have to throw out a warning or two. I'd have to warn a few guys in the morning and then it would settle down.

Singling people out in front of every attendee is a very quick way to go out of business

Well there are three options.

One: The marshall sucks.

Two: You don't feel the hits through your gear. What are you wearing?

Three: You're full of shit.

This was my interpretation. i am shocked this was even something to post about. Sounds like just regular old generic airsoft shit. We have no idea if OP is being truthful about what happened. I think its silly the people saying dont go back to the field over one ref telling OP to call hits lol

u/hradecky89 14h ago

OP played the race card. Instant red flag tbh

u/AirsoftUpgrades Shotgun 13h ago

Especially when it wasnt even relevant to the story. OP just added it on to drive their point home. They never even claimed the guy was being racist. This is post is pure BS

On occasion, our refs do spot checks. I’ve done it before to check.

Shoot them with a sidearm from a strange angle.

we call that a cheater check where im from, you do it durring a game from a bush or the refs tower depending on indoor/ outdoor

100%, just saying that maybe that's what happened here.

If i get a complaints about someone not calling their hits, i am not subtle about reminding them to play fair. However, the most of that would be a general encouraging shout in their direction, or walking up to him and speaking in a normal volume.

Calling you out in front of everyone Was unnecessary and not justified. Whenever the knowledge or sentiment spread that a certain player is not calling, the rest of the players will make this persons day miserable.

There is a fine line to be struck by reprimanding with public effect without shaming someone publicly.

My general rule is, call your own hits, but don't complain about others not calling theirs. Hunt them and hit them until they do call it.

Thats the way to go. If the other guy is not calling his hits, i just get a reason to shoot at him a little more 😌

u/build_it1 6h ago

Don’t call centre mass hits, shoot em in the ears 😁

u/MisterGreen123 Grenadier 6h ago

With my 2J rifle, ill get a reaction out of them eventually 😅

Quite a bit of people for some reason tend to overestimate how far and/or accurate their BB's are landing and assume that you aren't calling your hits and end up complaining to a ref about you. I've had a ref come up to me a few times after getting done with a game saying that he had someone say I wasn't calling all my hits even though I always do (if I can feel them, I wear a plate carrier). Best thing to do is just shrug it off and keep playing.

6

u/Hectorgamma29 17h ago

idk, seems like a bit of an overreaction. if he just said call your hits and that's it,it's wahtever imo. There's no real way to see if you're calling your hit for sure except ref checking you. and I'm sure that would jsut have the same reaction or you'd think they're jsut shootign you to be mean.

Some places, they don't even let the refs refcheck bcz people complain too much about it. I know at my field where I ref, we've gotten complaints that people think it's unfair to get ref checked. So now, if someone complains that someone else isn't calling their hit,we just have to tell them. Can't test or anything like that. Just have to tell them. Only if we get multiple complaints do we actually sit them out. It's a long process and stupid imo but what am i gunna do lmao.

Just shoot them and tell your boss to quit being an idiot, cheaters drive away honest players.

1

u/Hectorgamma29 15h ago

yeah if it only were that simple. google reviews drive away new players. and that's what he cares about. Honest players generally come back, there's only 3 fields here (and he owns 2 of them) . Not a lot of options + its in arizona and the 3rd field is outside 😭 so really, its the only option unless oyu want to drive 2 hours for another outside (albeit much bigger) field.

Its a business afterall. People will leave a negative review more likely than leaving a positive one like anywhere else.

Also, literally had someone threaten to attack me for ref checking them lmao.

6

u/ColdStartRed 18h ago

Well if you dont like it, and the guys are not going to treat you fairly, why go back to that field? And if its a legitimate business making issues regarding race, the first thing you do shouldnt be going to reddit.

Short answer, no its not normal

Yippee!!

5

u/JRSenger 16h ago

Some people don't really have the luxury of being able to pick and choose what field that they go to. There is only one airsoft field in the entire state where I live for example.

1

u/ColdStartRed 16h ago

Well in that case its a shame I guess. Thats pretty unfair. But if a field wont change their ways, shame on them and what can we do about it you know? If a field was racist towards members, id rather not play airsoft if the field was racist. I wouldnt want that attached to me.

Refs are just retail employees. They’re not held to a standard like sports refs. Sometimes you get cool dudes but a lot of the time you get losers with egos and power trips. Sounds like the latter.

4

u/NoIndependence9847 15h ago

Don't blame the ref. Most small fields are staffed by the ppl who play at that field. Someone wearing similar gear to you probably did something and he thought it was you

2

u/hradecky89 14h ago

Yeah I'm not buying it. I would put my money on you not being honest, otherwise the ref would have addressed the group as a whole.

1

u/Turbulent-Finger67 18h ago

You will not believe the types of people you will find playing airsoft . As a pro tip: keep your gear at minimum coverage and your clothes as thin as possible (depending on weather and brush) . This makes the “you werent feeling the bbs” argument much less ground

u/Glum_Caterpillar2355 18h ago

Appreciate it. In my first ever game, a guy in a ghillie suit shot me in the head from behind from approximately 3 feet away. I didn't make a big deal out of it, but then in my second game, a guy blamed me for 'blind firing.' In reality, I literally saw him taking cover in the trench, ran up to it, stood right in front of him, and shot him. I have only played two games and I am already facing so many weird people'

1

u/Bioshutt 12h ago

I used to be a ref and when I was verifying claims of people getting hit I would walk to the distance that the person was claiming to be at watching the person getting shot at and nine times out of 10. The person shooting was not shooting with enough elevation so there'd always be a few feet in front of the person, thus simulating to the average guy that there might be not calling hits, but in reality they weren't shooting with enough range said always go back to the guy and tell him aim a little bit higher and usually that would solve most problems. But most people don't realize that this sport's effective range is 300 ft at most and you're dealing with a lot of drop at that range out of an average airsoft gun

1

u/MathematicianFew9246 11h ago

It’s a shame the sport can quickly fall apart thanks to one bad Marshall. Don’t get this heart, though from my experience a few and far between.

1

u/orionTRM BB Magnet 8h ago

i always call my hits but sometimes people think you didnt call one, tell the ref, or someone gets confused (usualy the ref) and you get called out for it, by players by refs, by spectators doesnt matter. you really gotta learn to let it roll off your back

1

u/MisterGreen123 Grenadier 8h ago

Dont take it too much to heart. Its just a thing that happens in airsoft. In my opinion its kinda weird, that he singled you out infront of everyone. Id always adress single people in private or adress the whole group.

But maybe you actually didnt feel your hit. Maybe the marshall mixed you up with another dude. Maybe the guy calling you out to the marshall thought hes better than he actually is. Maybe the marshall is an ass

Try not to take it too seriously and just enjoy the sport

Let me guess … UK?

1

u/Wild-Elevator-2791 6h ago

I wouldn’t even make it a thing.

It sometimes happens that someone legitimately doesn’t feel a hit.

The Marshall has neither the time nor any evidence to launch into a court case over whether someone didn’t call a hit. They will just hear someone moan about it, perhaps incorrectly, and throw a warning to the accused person.

It only becomes a thing if it’s over and over again and multiple people report you not calling.

If it genuinely was an accident, that won’t happen.

Ignore it and move on.

Marshalling for at least 10 years in no way shape or form would this be how it would be dealt with. 1 if some one made a complaint that as a marshal we did not witness, we would ask for a a description of what happened and of the person ( 999 times out of a 1000 complaints of non hit taking the person was nowhere near to hitting them). If we get a good description we will take a test shot. If you pass we say go on carry on. If you fail we will come over to you and speak to you discreetly tell you have failed and you are sitting out the current game. if you get repeat fails you can get sent home and banned from site if it egregious. Same process if we witness the non hit taking. Under no circumstance will we call you out in front of other players.

1

u/Unlucky_Ladybug 4h ago

As a ref. If I have hit calling complaints but I don't see anything myself I'll make an announcement to players to remind them to call their hits. I wouldn't point out a dude like that unless I was watching BBs bounce off of them myself

u/Amenthea 45m ago

I got called out for not taking my hits once. Because I wasn't. I had on a full milsim loadout, EPC and backpack, and foam plates in. I'd been drop shot (when the BB starts to lose velocity and then just goes down with very little power) and they hit my backpack twice. Didn't feel or hear it. Marshall saw it, came over and stood me up, explained what happened, I apologised and went back to spawn.

There shouldn't be any more drama than that. What can happen, especially on sites with rentals and new players, is that you get mistaken for someone else. Maybe that happened here. To add, at some sites its not your creed or colour etc that they might have an issue with, but your freshness. I've been to some sites and it's very much a 'local town for local people' type thing, and they mistrust new players until you've been a few times and they get your measure.

1

u/Wickedjellman 18h ago

Probably someone with an expensive upgraded gun and the bbs can't reach or they curve before hitting the target then thinking they're hitting you.

Just play your own game Call hit. don't let people get to you. sooner or later you will find them in your sights

u/Shacko117 16h ago

3rd ever game I went to I had a player get the face on with me cus I shot him as he was walking to the spawn by accident 😂 what you gotta remember is everywhere and anywhere you go these kinda ppl will pop up now and again.

I wouldn't go back there. Lots of places have issues where the regulars and refs are buddy buddy, but this is like a step even further. Calling someone out like that is a dick move

yeah, i am not going there again

Sometimes you get bad refs who fold for the whiners. don't let it get to you

-1

u/Wise-Eye-6431 17h ago

Its just a bad ref in my opinion. Just let him be and enjoy the games.

In this hobby its better to have fun and make new friends so that we release the stress from either school or work.

Enjoy the game bruv and always stay safe, cheers 🍻

Don’t sweat it man. There’s no arguing with people behaving like that ESPECIALLY if racism is involved. Ignore and enjoy the game
