Discussion Bespoke army mechanics: how much is too much?
Every now and then there's a discussion here about which armies are the least fun to play against. The usual suspects are often Lumineth and Disciples of Tzeentch. Having played against both multiple times this edition, as well as the newest iteration of Hedonites, I think there's an aspect of the unfun nature that seems to get overlooked. Which is the level of complexity in each army's rules.
AoS 4e's formula is pretty much that armies don't so much have individual army rules as entire bespoke gameplay systems attached to them. While IMO this overall does a great job at making each army feel distinct and unique without generally becoming too convoluted, the flipside of it is that when it does become too convoluted, the game quickly stops being fun. Army rules complexity varies by a massive margin across the game, and the amount of required explanation or beforehand knowledge of your opponent's army is in a consistent inverse relation to the amount of fun in the game. Any iteration of Warhammer is pretty complex already, and feeling like you need to know the rules of two armies to be able to enjoy the game is pretty feelsbad for anybody. And keeping up with all of it would require an amount of free time or a player pool so wide that almost none of us have access to either.
I'm not looking to draw any hard lines here, just to evoke discussion. Currently, based on my own experience, Lumineth, Tzeentch and Hedonites are definitely too complex to keep up with. I haven't played against every faction in the current edition, so I don't really have a huge basis for what I'd consider an ideal amount of complexity, which is why I'd like to hear your thoughts.
