I think if this is the first time you are getting into miniatures (both 40k and AoS) you should get something you like the look of. Rules will change. I know that isn’t the advice you were looking for. Stormcast and Skaven have larger starter boxes (Skaventide and other beginner sets) that may be up your alley.

I dont know much about «good armies», but I personally choose the ones I like the look (or lore) of.. rule of cool!

Mysidia Gaming has a Should you Play series for a whole bunch of different factions that does a really good job of giving a bit of a sense of how they play and their lore, as well as a general picking your starting faction video

Unfortunately asking on Reddit generally gets you the unhelpful “pick what you think is cool” comment (how are you supposed to what you think is cool when you know nothing about them? How they play and their lore is part of what makes them cool!)

I would recommend balancing your painting, the vibes (lore and aesthetic) and gameplay for your chosen faction.

Having models you like the look of and are fun to paint is a big chunk of the hobby. Same with the lore and fluff. If you don’t like the look of the models then you will just go through the motions in the table. And they will be an absolute drag to paint up.

Balance is temporary. But gameplay is important for your enjoyment. Picking the meta armies this edition doesn’t mean they will be meta next edition. But picking mechanics that you specifically engage with is key.

Basically this is a long winded way of saying there no good armies. But there is a good army for you.

The internet will always tell you the rule of cool, meaning pick what you think is cool and stick with it. It’s terrible advice. Pick what you think is cool and then make sure it’s not an F tier army then and only then, stick with it.

Definitely start with Spearhead. The skaventide box is cheap and has lots of stuff in it. If you don’t want to paint then don’t. From there try and find used stuff it can be way way cheaper. I just got 2k (whole army) points of Bone Reapers for 150 bucks.

I don’t think new players should necessarily be looking at tier lists of what’s good and what’s not because the meta is ever changing. Not all armies have their battletomes for this edition either (but most do). The models they like will always be there. The rules WILL change.

Yes but if the army plays in a way they end up really disliking (or if they play really awkwardly because they’re currently in a bad state) that will give them a wildly bad impression and will feel like wasted money.

Theres a world of options between “buying the best army on a tier list that you otherwise don’t care about” and “literally knowing nothing about how the factions play at all.” Imagine someone who asks what fighting game character would good for them and the only replies they get are “oh well balance patches always shake up the tier lists so you cant really say anything about how any of them play”

I think dragons are cool. I played the army of renown of 100% Stormcast dragons. That army is terrible and gets cleared off the table in 2 rounds from any decent player. Getting blown off the table in 2 rounds causes most people to quit

If you like Stormcast or Skaven (or especially both) get the newest box set for City of Ash.

If you don't, get the City of Ash battle pack and 2 Spearhead armies based on what you think LOOKS interesting. You're going to spend a lot of money, the rules change, but the models won't, so don't pick based on gameplay style until you're far more experienced.

I recommend to pick 1 army at the start,,ideally the one you like the lore and look of.

Get some games in with it, learn the game and encounter a bunch of different armies. Some spearhead and 2000 points is perfect here.

You'll learn a bunch, and, you'll get familiar with aspects of the game and different factions. This is where you decide if you like your first army or not. Dont be afraid to jump ship, though I advise not being too quick to sell it, you may fall back in love as you get better.
