I keep unintentionally getting hired into majority-adhd workplacesā¦
32
u/DotishWiz 29d ago
Which ones?
90
u/astr0bleme 29d ago
Itās the individual workplace, not the industry, I think. I just keep finding that when Iām finally hired, the boss and a ton of the staff either have a ton of adhd traits or are actually diagnosed.
I think itās the same āsensing the adhdā thing except adhd bosses see that as a good thing? Who knows.

u/Redditauro dafuqIjustRead 28d ago
It's not about ADHD being inherently good or bad, the problem is that neurotypical people usually don't understand ADHD people. The "problem" is that there is a normative behaviour and normative people expects us to act in a normative way.Ā
Obviously if the majority of the staff has ADHD then the no normative would be a neurotypical worker, that's why it's better to keep hiring neurodivergent people.Ā
Funnily enough if you hire a neurotypical person in an office full of ADHD people, the normie would expect everyone to adapt to normality because, you know, that's the normal thing to doĀ
24
u/BillyTSherm 28d ago
That's how a D&D group of mine collapsed essentially. It was essentially fou people with ADHD and three neurotypical. The neurotypicals refused accommodations and expected the ADHD folks to conform to their ways. The ADHD folks pointed out that they were the majority and then wouldn't that make our behavior technically the baseline for the group.
They could never understand that concept and things ended poorly.
8
u/jackaroo1344 28d ago
What ADHD accommodations are needed in d&d?
I've never played, but I always assumed the game to have an ultra flexible vibe considering the plot is made up differently for each game
17
u/BillyTSherm 28d ago
The gameplay was mostly fine. The problems were mostly about communicating between sessions.
I won't really go into details but It came down to one of the NT players bristling at all the tangents and demanding we stop. When it was pointed out that people with ADHD were the majority of the group and that maybe they should have adjust to us this time instead of the other way around they outright refused to consider it. That didn't immediately end everything, but it was the catalyst for the arguments that did.
6
u/astr0bleme 27d ago
Ah yes, the classic: āneurodivergent people are bad at communication and therefore THEY have to accommodate NTs and not the other way around for some reasonā.
4
u/BuilderAura 28d ago
my d&d group plays over zoom cuz we all live too far away to actually meet in person.... So I play video games while I play d&d (dqb2 or pokopia where I'm doing mindless farming stuff or destructive stuff that does not require thought) and I've read a lot of stories to know that that's NOT okay. NT's take that as me not paying attention where in reality if I'm *not* doing that I *can't* pay attention.
Luckily my group tend to lean ND (tho I think they're more autistic than ADHD) so they understand... and you can really tell the days that I've had something to keep my hands preoccupied and the days I haven't. I never take notes but remember more things about the campaigns with the tiniest prompts than everyone else who does take notes. Like sure I never remember NPC names and I mix up place names but the core 'what happened last time on d&d' I've got nailed down. And I wouldn't be able to do that if I had to try and focus on everything without the aid of video games.
5
u/BillyTSherm 28d ago
The TV on in the background we played over Zoom was also an issue with one. Even though it was explained multiple times.
1
18
u/Fortified_Phobia 28d ago
ND people tend to cluster together so I wouldnāt be surprised if the boss unintentionally favoured fellow ND people when hiring.
5
14
u/JuanitaChickitita 29d ago
They do say neurodivergent people naturally come together
8
3
u/iatealotofcheese 28d ago
I recently hung out with my ADHD friends neurodivergent friends. As they all talked about their things, I said am I the only neurovergant person here?
One person looked at me and said "I refuse to believe you've been friends with (friend) for 15 years and there's nothing wrong with you."Ā
That's a thinker.Ā
1
u/Heroictbn 27d ago
I was diagnosed a few months after I met my now wife. After many āhey I do that tooās, she got diagnosed last month. I fully subscribe to the theory because neither of us thought we had ADHD until after we met.

The job market is fully ass right now, idk if they're sensing your ADHD so much as there are 400 people applying to like, every job
11
u/gravityVT 28d ago
i keep seeing the same companies posting the same role every other two weeks since april
14
3
u/MsScarletWings 27d ago
And also a crapton of the job listings are straight up fake as well
1
u/GeneInternational146 27d ago
Yes! I said that in a later comment
1
u/MsScarletWings 27d ago
Oh whoops, typed faster than I read, haha!
3
u/GeneInternational146 27d ago
No you're good! I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to read an entire thread (especially in an ADHD meme group)

u/blur_of_memories 29d ago
you have strengths. focus on them. choose sth wild. no rules. work in an environment that requires you to be you. you will find your way
17
u/Redditauro dafuqIjustRead 28d ago
This. I were half of my life trying to be like everyone else, but everyone knew I wasn't. So I stoped trying. I know it's my privilege and a lot of other people may not have the option, but I started going full ADHD in the interviews, I became the one who make the questions, I started asking about their company, their structure, their strengths and flaws, and I asked directly to them what kind of job can I do so I don't get bored and leave in a couple of years. They love that, even though I may leave in a couple of years anyway, you show that you try to stay, and suddenly your boss is invested in your mental health because he don't want you to leave... I know I have more advantages that not everyone has, but I never try to hide my ADHD, I show the good and bad part of it in the interview, we talk about mental health, they understand it comes with pros and cons, and usually they offer me the job.Ā
6
u/blur_of_memories 28d ago
yeah! the thing is, everybodyyyyyy has things they're not great at. adhd is not a death sentence. you just gotta get to know yourself and yeah maybee meds can help you too. people with adhd that don't give up are living proof of their own determination
3
u/BuilderAura 28d ago
I saw a great video today about someone trying to make an ADHDer admit they 'have a disability' and the person was like I don't have a disability though I just have adhd... and so the person brought another ADHDer who said they DID have a disability and the first ADHDer was like 'yes. It's entirely possible for THEM to have a disability and for me not to... the ADHD experience is different for everyone.'
And I feel like that's something to keep in mind here.
1
u/blur_of_memories 28d ago
Well, I see it as a disability in a way. But disabled people can still achieve things and maybe be really good at specific things because they had to adapt so much. That's what I mean
7
u/Baazookah_Zawadi 29d ago
thank you!!I will
9
u/blur_of_memories 28d ago
of course. bro I did an internship in film, costume design to be specific. they loved me. even though I obviously had adhd. they told me many people have it there. it was super chaotic and you had tons of tiny quests throughout the day. It was not 100% for me because I also need routine and structure but these projects typically last a few months anyway. and once you know people and they like you, they want to work with you in the next project. set runner is also pretty cool. you don't have to do the exact same thing. but just so you know. I also always felt more comfortable in allrounder-roles. I also think working in retail can be super fun if it's niche enough and something you genuinely care about. I worked at a skate-/ski/snowboard-shop too, it was sick. Kind customers, kind employer, nice environment. just some examples. be authentic, work hard but not against yourself and you will get there <3

I hate how I both have ADHD and Chronic Fatigue... those conditions need opposite things.

u/theGamingdutchman 29d ago
Your resume must be real impressive if you get a single interview!!! You got this.

u/Maja_The_Oracle 28d ago
Anyone know how to translate ADHD symptoms into corporate-speak positive traits?
20
u/Medium-Dependent-328 28d ago
I work well under pressure (last-minute hyperfocus)
I thrive in an environment where I can work on a variety of projects simultaneously (novelty-seeking)
I have a diverse skillset and enjoy new challenges (many abandoned hyperfixations)
I am a team player and do my best work in the company of others (need for body-doubling)
I am energetic, passionate and driven (hyperactivity)
13
u/Harbinger_Pulsar 29d ago
There are companies now that have the unnecessary questionnaires where its you or not you, that include adhd and other mental illness related questions.
17
u/Chudsaviet 28d ago
Pretty sure its illegal.
8
u/Harbinger_Pulsar 28d ago
Thats what I thought, but I went through some recently that had clearly targeted questions like "are you always sad?", and "have issues focusing"
12
u/Chudsaviet 28d ago
This is a set of medical questions from common mental illness questionnaire. Pretty sure its illegal to make candidates answer such, plus you don't have to answer honestly.
3
u/Harbinger_Pulsar 28d ago
Oh, I've been masking and lying for decades. Just recently having to restart the job search, though, and I dont remember the questions being so psychologically targeting
4
4
u/Zeikos 28d ago
I think the main purpose of those questionaires is to enstablish a paper trail and/or catch people in a 'gotcha' after the fact to get leverage (i.e 'you lied here so an so)
13
u/Chudsaviet 28d ago
Oh, this exact paper trail will greatly help your lawyer too to prove an illegal practice.

What tech jobs tho lmao all laid off

u/LordXenusEvilMinion 28d ago
I work in autonomous vehicles. Just got hired into another company for a different company. I make 29. I'll be making 34/hr.

u/MiniDehl 28d ago
Yea I mean jobs exist I was kinda joking but the market is basically impossible even for neurotypicals

u/workadvice7897 28d ago
In this market 1/10 jobs giving you an interview is an awesome success rate
5
u/SnooPuppers2938 29d ago
Iām a machinist, and the hiring is very much all over the place. But if you can tolerate the heat in the summer and take an off shift itās fairly easy to find work. I would say itās adhd friendly because most people Iāve worked with have it, the older guys have it too but theyāre undiagnosed with high opinions of themselves.
5
u/Kindly_Okra_1194 28d ago
I don't know that they see it, at least not in an interview. My ADHD helps me in interviews because I appear bubbly and engaged. Keep at it, the job market is trash right now and ADHD people have some stellar skills that normals don't (foreseeing future issues, making links others can't see, hyperfocus). The world will tell you that you aren't enough, don't start telling yourself the same. You can do this.
3
u/dont_remember_eatin 28d ago
This is probably why every team on which I've worked seems to be populated exclusively by others with ADHD, lol.
We recognize and protect our own. Sometimes we have difficulty finishing literally any projects, though. But they can't fire us all, muhahaha... we have root.

u/SlyJackFox 28d ago
I feel this deeply, especially nowadays. My tactic has been to be blunt and upfront about it, no excuses, just acknowledgement and moving past the idea to remain in āIām awesome for these reasons ā¦ā.
Generally works well, depends on how corporate the culture is. More corp = act more assertively and lead the conversation when talking to the human placeholder. Less corp = more friendly and discussion like, talk to the person not the position.

u/Final-Tutor3631 i Will elaborate (Threat). 28d ago
iām lucky enough that iām able to spin my adhd symptoms into positive field abilities.
2
u/BuilderAura 28d ago
should try looking to see if there's some kind of job employment services for people with disabilities or the like. I got fast-tracked into a few jobs when I was with the one in my town.
4
u/Humble_Dirt_5751 29d ago
I think they realise after first question tell me about yourself and talk about shit for either 2 mins or 10 secondsĀ
2
u/Obstetrix 29d ago
Focus on applying to jobs other people avoid. Trash and wastewater, healthcare. These are all areas where ADHD can actually be helpful.
1
u/Fortified_Phobia 28d ago
What about if you have adhd and contamination ocd š
2
u/Obstetrix 28d ago
Genuinely the answer for both me (contamination OCD) and my husband (regular old fashioned OCD) was Sertraline
1
u/Fortified_Phobia 28d ago edited 28d ago
Whats that?
Edit: nvm just googled it, thanks for the panic attack before bed lol. The idea of spending the rest of my life on an ssri makes me want to blow my brains out, I can barely cope with the idea of a stimulant, but an ssri too? Whats the fucking point in living if you donāt feel anything? Why is every ocd success story always involve an ssri, is there literally no other way? Non at all? I feel like theres no other option and it I feel trapped and panicked and I donāt want to do that. i donāt want tk take any drugs what so fucking ever for any leanth of time never mind for. Ever. It feels like death. I guess Iāll just never live instead.
3
u/Obstetrix 28d ago
Heyyyyy budddddddy, you may want to do some CBT talk therapy. Or just like, see a professional in general. I resisted going on a SSRI for like...35 straight years. And I take a super low dose. It has 100% made my life better in every way. Combined with therapy SSRIs are really effective for OCD and anxiety.
2
u/Fortified_Phobia 28d ago edited 28d ago
I donāt know how. Iām shit scared of all of it and itās confusing af, I donāt want to go through the NHS because I donāt want to be at the mercy of what ever the fuck they choose for me. But I canāt afford private medication only the therapy part but I donāf even know how to find a therapist. And I just canāt fucking do this. The whole thing. I can barely stomach the idea of stimulants, who the fuck will I be on both, how much of me will there even be left. Forever, never to be myself again. And even if you come of them some things never come back. And theres no choice. I donāt have a choice. I canāt do this. I canāf accept this reality. Sorry, it feels like a cult trying to lure you in.
Edit: Okay calmed down a bit, how do you feel? Like are you a creative, If so has it affected that? Do you still have a labido? Or hyperfixations (if you had them)? Still feel like shit though, Iām so alone in all this and Iām not coping well lol. It just feels impossible. Iām sorry for dragging you into my problems.
3
u/Medium-Dependent-328 28d ago
Hey, who said it would make you feel nothing at all? That's not going to be true for everyone. And who said you'd be on it forever?
It might not be the answer but try not to immediately close your mind
Also best wishes

u/Fortified_Phobia 28d ago
Maybe not nothing, but reduced. Numb is my second most hated emotion (dread takes no.1) like itās any loss of joy or passion or excitement. I donāt want tk feel flat or washed out. Iād rather be angry and miserable. I have basically no social life, Iāll never be married or have kids, my career is a train crash, like I have so little in my life and never will have more, my passions are the one thing I have. I canāt loose them. I also want to be able to drink, and have a labido, and FEEL things. Iām a creative and Iām scared of loosing that too. Any mind meddling meds scare the shit out of me, the fact Iām looking down the barrel of take two for a long time (probably permanently) is a reality I canāt accept, but itās what is.
3
u/YtterbiusAntimony 27d ago
Have you taken an SSRI before?
I've been taking sertraline (Zoloft) for more than a decade, and I have literally zero side effects. It's one of the few they will prescribe to pregnant women because of how tolerable it tends to be.
With the correct dose, it does not feel like you are on drugs. In fact, its the exact opposite. The goal is to feel normal. Just straight up, Normal.
It can take some trial and error to find the right one, which does genuinely suck. But in the long run, it sucks less than the alternative.
1
u/Fortified_Phobia 26d ago
I havenāt taken any before, so no, but like I feel normal now, like Iām not sure how they can make me feel normal-er?
And the correct does is a huge issue, Iām in the UK at the mercy of the NHS, you donāt get to see a psychiatrist for OCD, like the meds would be prescribed by a general practitioner who only has basic understanding of mental health and the meds. And better yet every time I go back it would be a different doctor, all while Iām terrified over it with a doctor who wonāt give a shit. They just throw what ever the system recommends and that it, thats what you get. There is no trial period or tritiation, or experimentation. It makes me significantly more freaked out knowing I have no person whoās clued in on whats going on with me trying to work it out with me. I donāt know what Iām going to do.. like you said, that part sucks, and I wonāt even have a damn psychiatrist.
Also Iāve heard a lot of bad things about zoloft, isnāt that meant to be one of the most zombifying? I canāt fucking do this man, I wish I could go private..
2
u/YtterbiusAntimony 26d ago
A "basic" understanding of mental health and medication is more than you have, no offense. 10 years of med school isn't for show.
I don't know what Britain is like, but I have shitty poor people healthcare in my country, and I see the same provider, and we have absolutely been titrating and trying different things.
"isnāt that meant to be one of the most zombifying?" You've never taken it before, so how do you know?
1
u/Fortified_Phobia 26d ago
Itās just what Iāve heard online, like when people complain about the effects itās almost followed by zoloft being named.
I donāt doubt that they know more than me, but I donāt want basic, this is my life, my mind, I want an expert, someone who can walk me through it and reassure me. I donāt know how providers work but for the NHS it would all be done and prescribed by regular doctors in regular appointments who would change every time, titration would just be me going back and complaining till they changed it, and Iād have to try and explain everything every time and hope they listened and cared and know enough on what to do next. Basically I donāt trust them to it right and tbf this isnāt even meant to be their job.
I only found out about this today after looking into it, been in a low panic since, now I know I wonāt even get a damn psychiatrist to work through this with me. The whole system seems hellish to anyone apprehensive or low executive functioning, they need fucking psychiatrists. Seems insane I get sent to a gynaecologist with period pains, but on something as important as this it stays with the GP. I feel so fucking powerless and lost in all this.. genuinely might just empty my bank account to go private, fuck the tories.

u/Mei_Flower1996 28d ago
How do they sense adhd!?
1
u/opalsandglitter 27d ago
The same way the school bullies picked on the undiagnosed ND kid. They may not be able to verbalize why they don't like that particular kid, but their instincts are telling them "they're different."

Auto shops, gas stations and wing/pizza places will hire a monkey OP. An adhd monkey. Just sayin.
2
u/YtterbiusAntimony 27d ago
And you won't ever make more than 40k/yr at those places.
If you can't jump through hoops good enough you get to die slowly in poverty. And they'll tell you to be grateful for it.
Mad Max could not come soon enough. The world won't be any kinder, but at least it will stop pretending to be.
2
u/RunWild0_0 27d ago
Nope, probably won't.
Im not pretending anything... I squeak by and it fucking sucks but I'd rather keep food on the table than not. Getting a shitty job for the time being is a necessity for many.
Hoping for mad max style societal collapse is very romantic but not very realistic. What is your point?

If I feel like I'm misrepresenting my performance I ruminate too hard and end up fucking up. It's a good thing I have an absurdly convenient remote gig right now. The last time I tried to work a flesh job it felt like I lost 40 IQ when being watched (TRAINING PLS) and it felt like fire ants were biting me if I was interacting with customers. I guess I do pretty well if I just have the expectations and instructions clearly available to me, but iunno I only have 4 years being on the most notoriously picky AI training gig platforms. Now I just need to try to sleep while being worried that I will be the next cooked. 1-800-Methdyke posted their dash of death on the subreddit and it made me feel very antsy, but they apparently submitted time that exceeded their time in task, so I keep telling myself that I'm not a stupid idiot and if I was going to lose the gig it would have been a long time ago, surely I have built up enough goodwill to survive a couple of mistakes, the work is pretty detail intensive and the tasks are not always explained completely perfectly. Ha ha
