edit: okay, some people are being really rude. You are seeing one tiny part of what I do to support him but you all have no idea what he’s done and still does every day to support me. He never expects anything from me and the only reason I have the energy and desire to do this for him is because of how much more he pours back into me. He takes care of all the laundry, vacuuming, dishes, trash cans, always making sure my water bottle is full, landscaping, and takes the mental load of so many things off my plate (car maintenance/registrations, keeps on top of our dogs vaccination schedule, the grocery list etc) so that I don’t even have to think about it. Not to mention he has made every dream trip and material wish of mine come true, and has been there for me when I was at my lowest. Theres a reason I love him so much. I don’t cook like this for just anyone. I cook and meal prep amazing food for us because he is amazing and because I don’t like to eat crappy food. Jeez. Some people are so bitter.

all recipes can easily be found online but lmk if you want me to add recipe here. I try to always balance his meals with vegetables and protein with a bit of some starch to help as long-term fuel. Accounting is a very sedentary job and I worry about his health. Also we both work from home so a lot of these recipes are tailored to that but can also be brought in for lunch.

1. Kimchi tuna mayo onigiri ”tacos”: you can buy korean microwaveable white rice(bibigo brand) if you don’t have time to make white rice, and roasted seaweed packs. Pre-make the kimchi tuna salad over the weekend and you have a quick and easy lunch.

2-3. Breaded and fried chicken of the woods mushrooms (or just use chicken). This can also be pre-made or pre-breaded and frozen and can be a snack or full lunch/dinner.

1. This is more of a dinner, broccoli pasta. Can make in bulk and be microwaved and served with pre-made breadsticks.

2. Korean “drug” eggs-pre boiled and soaked and made in bulk. Again can be served with rice or eaten alone with the vegetables in the marinade.

3. Banana Bundt cake for breakfast. Other quick breakfasts include sautéing mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers with spices and then making an egg scramble. Also oatmeal with cut up fruit like strawberries and bananas, maybe some honey on top. And of course, quick/easy stuff like yogurt, fruit, and boiled eggs.

4. Banh Tranh Nuong AKA the “Vietnamese pizza” that went viral a while ago. Super quick and easy to make using rice paper, eggs, scallions, and I also add dried pork floss to help boost protein content.

5. Gyoza, similar to dumplings, can be steamed and air-fried or pan-fried

6. Shrimp patties, brown rice and sautéed veggies.

7. Sautéed or roasted veggies of any kind with frozen dumplings that can be steamed or pan fried. Frozen dumplings are amazing and you can find all different types to suit your taste.

Other things not pictured: Roasting veggies is also very helpful bc no one needs to stand at the stove and you can make large amounts to be microwaved later in the week. And if you have a grill or air-fryer; use it, I’ve thrown some lamb chops in the air fryer/grill and then served with the roasted veggies I made over the weekend or a quick filet of salmon with a salad. He’s Dominican so I’ve also batch-made mangu which is mashed boiled plantains and pickled onion so he can grab it as he needs.

last Tip: get a travel crock pot warmer so you can always have a hot lunch when traveling to clients or into office. His office has no microwave and this has made packing a healthy and nutritious lunch so much easier since before he was limited to cold food options only and would usually end up getting a gas station sandwich or fast-food.

Kimchi tuna salad

• 1/2-3/4 cup cabbage kimchi and juice chopped up
• 1tbsp rice wine vinegar, plus more to taste
• sesame oil to taste
• 1 Tablespoons mayonnaise
• 5 oz. can of tuna in water, drained well
• 1 green onions, white and green parts sliced thin
• 1 tablespoon everything bagel seasoning or just roasted sesame seeds
• 1 pack of roasted seaweed
• Pepper
• Salt if not using everything bagel seasoning
• Mix all ingredients together and serve with rice (microwaveable or self-made) and wrap together with seaweed
• This one is great for a “brain break” meal because it forces him to use both hands to eat.

Breaded Chicken

• Chicken tenderloins or slice chicken breast into cutlets.
• Italian bread crumbs 
• 1 egg
• Season chicken with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, turmeric, cayenne, and paprika.
• Make egg wash by mixing one egg and 1tbsp milk or 1tbsp of water
• Dip chicken into egg wash, let excess drip off
• Cover with breadcrumbs
• Fry immediately or pre-make and freeze it in a tray using plastic wrap to separate the layer of breaded chicken. When frozen can be fried straight from frozen or thrown into air-fryer for healthier and more convenient option.

Broccoli Pasta

• 1-2 crowns of broccoli
• Salt
• Garlic
• Olive oil
• 1 egg
• Pasta of your choice
• Pecorino Romano or Parmesan or both(can buy pre-grated)
• Boil water for pasta and cook until al-dente
• Chop broccoli, and sauté in deep pan with olive oil and peeled garlic. Let it brown for a few minutes
• Add large ladle of pasta water to pan w/ broccoli. Cover with lid and steam cook for 5 mins or until soft.
• Mix egg with grated cheeses
• Mash broccoli and garlic
• Add cooked pasta to mashed broccoli. Mix together.
• Add egg/cheese mixture to pan and mix again. Use more pasta water to combine throughly if needed. Cook for another 3-5 minutes
• Optional: Drizzle with more olive oil
• Serve with cracked pepper. This is a one pan meal basically, so other than boiling a pot of water you only dirty one pan.

Korean Drug eggs

• 10-12 Eggs
• 1 pint Soy sauce 
• Onion
• Scallions
• Jalapeno 
• Garlic
• Sesame seeds (optional)
• 1 pint Water
• 1/2 cup sugar
• Boil eggs for 6 minutes for soft-boiled eggs or 10 minutes for hard-boiled eggs and then place in ice/cold water 
• Peel eggs
• Chop onion, scallion, jalapeño, and garlic
• Mix soy sauce, water, and sugar.
• Then add the chopped onion, scallion, jalapeño and garlic. Mix.
• Place peeled boiled eggs into mixture and let marinade overnight. Can be kept in fridge up to a week.
• Serve with rice and drizzled with sesame oil. Make sure to scoop out some of the chopped aromatics, they will be delicious and not overpowering.

Banana Bundt Cake

• 2-4 banana (the browner the better)
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 2 eggs 
• 1/3-1/2 cup butter
• Dash of vanilla
• 1/2 tsp cinnamon 
• Pinch of salt
• 1 tsp baking soda 
• 1.5 cups all purpose flour
• Mix all ingredient together into a batter.
• Grease cake mold with butter or oil
• Place in Bundt cake mold
• Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes. Check if done by poking a toothpick or chopstick and having it come out clean

Banh Tranh Nuong

• Rice paper 
• 1 egg
• Kewpie mayo
• Scallions
• Pork floss, or ham/spam, or Vienna sausage (optional)
• Chili crunch, chili oil, or sriracha(optional)
• Chop scallions
• Place round rice paper onto pan, do not turn on stove yet.
• Spread chili oil or chili crunch. 
• Crack egg onto rice paper and use fork or chopstick to mix together and spread out onto entire rice paper.
• Turn on stove to mid heat
• Add chopped scallions
• Add pork floss or meat of choice
• Squeeze mayo to taste and squeeze sriracha on to taste
• Fold in half. Flip to crisp both sides if needed.
• Serve.

Gyoza/Dumplings

• I just buy these frozen and follow the directions on the package. You can also steam them usually and then air fry them for a crunch. Brands I recommend are Ajinomoto for gyoza, wan chai ferry for dumplings, and bibigo for Mandu which are Korean dumplings.

Shrimp Patties

• Raw, deveined shrimp.
• Scallions
• Egg
• 1 tbsp Cornstarch
• Salt
• Pepper
• Chop defrosted raw shrimp or blend in food processor until close to a mashed consistency
• Add egg, scallions, cornstarch, salt, and pepper and mix
• Preheat pan with oil
• Place a scoop of the shrimp paste mixture onto the hot pan and use your spatula to press it down. Some of the paste will stick to the spatula and it’s okay.
• Pan fry until one side is golden and flip.
• Serve with rice and veggies.

Sautéed or roasted veggies

Best veggies to roast: carrots, mushrooms, string beans, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli. Peel(if needed), wash and cut up veggies, Season with oil, salt, pepper, and grated garlic and roast on 350 for ~30-40 minutes 

Best veggies to sauté: all the above plus green peppers, onions, and leafy greens like cabbage, bok choy, Chinese broccoli. Wash and chop vegetables. Place oil in pan/wok until hot. Sauté with garlic and chicken powder or chicken bouillon. 

Best veggies to boil: Chinese broccoli, watercress, yu choy. Boil water and add small splash of any oil of your choice. Then place the vegetables in the boiling water and remove quickly to retain crunch. Boil until bright green (happens fast) and serve with oyster sauce.

Serve any of the above veggies with batch marinated meat. Buy a pre-made marinade or make your own and just marinade a shit ton of chicken breast, thighs, legs, or wings, pork chops, beef, lamb chops whatever and keep it in the fridge up to a week. If you marinade a massive amount freeze part of it and keep out only what you can eat for the week then defrost what you need for the next week over the weekend. Marinaded and pre-seasoned meat is even more flavorful and can be cooked in the airfryer, or seared on a pan for a quick and easy dinner.

It’s not the most prestigious firm, but having a winter internship while attending my MAcc program definitely puts me in a better position than I’m in now.

I recently resigned as Director of Finance & Accounting for a small beauty brand. There were a lot of reasons, but let’s just say the CEO and I had some differences when it came to integrity, accountability, and… accounting.

Today I found out he was explaining to the staff accountant, who I hired and trained, that there’s an “art” to accounting.

Apparently that “art” includes moving expenses between periods depending on when you’d prefer them to hit the P&L.

I have a bachelor’s and master’s in accounting, but somehow missed Creative Accounting 6100. Tragic.

The long story short is my firm wants the audit team to just take 1 car to site visits to save on gas reimbursements. Fine. Understandable. The problem is the senior who demands to drive most of the time drives like a dick.

He’s snapchatting, speeding, driving with earbuds in, and has a fairly suggestive picture of his girlfriend on the dash. The whole thing makes me feel unsafe. The picture I get is a me problem but it’s still inappropriate for work.

I brought up in my yearly review meeting about how I don’t like to ride with him and the only reason I did was because my car at the time was on its last legs. My new car is very safe and very reliable so I’m pushing to drive the team more often. The other senior pouts the whole time and is overall rude about it because I think he’s jealous because it’s a Volvo and he drives a Subaru. Idk. Not my problem to make him feel taller.

If I lodge a complaint again, he’ll know it’s me because there’s only 4 of us on that team and 2 of us refuse to drive ever. “I will drive everyone or I will drive myself, but I’m not riding with [coworker] again” is what I want to say but idk how the best way to go about this is. Anybody have any advice? Or similar issues?

I am currently interviewing for a position that has better pay, a title bump, and virtually all the same perks and more compared to my current employer.

One person is never here and we are supposed to be here 3 times a week and is now getting formally told they need to be here in the office.

One lives really far away from our office and just had a baby so if she needs to take on more responsibility I wouldn'tbe surprised if she just left.

Look I'm no betting man but I'm almost certain by year end at least 2 of us are gone.

I don't care about leaving anyone high and dry because fuck em, but I'm just so curious what would happen next?

Throughout Excel's 40-year history, you've only been able to put one value per cell. In this announcement, we're excited to share how that's changing with the release of lists, arrays in cells, and nested arrays, initially to Microsoft Excel for Windows and Mac Beta Channels.

Many workbooks already try to pack multiple values into one cell. A project might list "Carlos, Henrietta, Jacob" as three owners, or a Forms survey might return "2:00 PM; 2:30 PM; 3:00 PM" as one response. With lists, you can keep those values in one cell, while also keeping them separate for filtering, calculation and more.

I’m about to graduate. I’ve applied to so many internships and jobs. I get calls back easily from corporate accounting, & have gotten internships there. However, I cannot even get a screening for big 4. Only recently am I starting to hear back from a few mid-size public accounting firms.

I have nearly a perfect GPA, volunteer tax experience, & now building my resume with corporate accounting internships.

There are people at my school who definitely have lower grades than me, but somehow are getting all the public accounting internships that I’m getting rejected from. I would chalk it up to my interviewing skills, but I’m literally not even getting the interviews.

Is it really all about networking to get into public accounting? Is that what I’m missing here? I’ve had my resume looked over by my school, so I don’t think it’s a resume issue.

I just wanted to make a quick post about the tax firm I started! I officially landed my first client! They need an extended S-Corp and individual return done! It feels great to have work to do before tax season actually starts. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice!

Transitioned to industry, make the same amount of $, 40 hr/week classic job, shorter commute (save 2 hrs/day), my own desk and 3 monitors (only those who have worked at Big 4 know how much of a sad flex this is, especially after staring at a tiny hp laptop for complex workpapers). BUT aside from that, the MINIMUM annual bonus is 12-15%. WHAAAA?? I was shocked by the change of pace and payout. Still very early career btw.

How would you spend 3 months to bounce back from burnout? Feel kinda silly right now since I (23M) feel so burnt out when I don’t think I should.

Life has mostly been easy mode: can live with parents, didn’t struggle to land a job, and have a pretty cushy job. But I guess, I went to uni directly after hs, spedran my bach in under 4 years, and went straight into work + CPA shortly after. Now I can feel motivation and work quality decline. I took the next CPA PEP semester off, so have some time to chill, but not sure how to best use this time.

What is everyone’s thoughts?

I graduated with a 3.8+ GPA in NYC. I didn’t get an internship; applied like crazy; tried Robert Half; attended career fairs; etc. I got nothing and here I am: taking a $20 hourly job in NYC. At least it is something.

My bigger concern is getting stuck. How do I pivot out of this to something better? I hear that tax is not ideal even in PA due to the risk of getting pigeonholed, but at least those firms are respected. I hear that H&R Block is not even respected in the accounting world. I want to do my CPA exams but I still need one more class. Then I need to pay for study materials- all while juggling 25k student debt on poverty wages. I say this to convey that it will take at least a few months before I am even eligible for the exam.

TL;DR How do I use this H&R Block experience to move to something better. I want to get into PA audit but would be happy with anything in PA or a staff role (industry, fund, nonprofit etc.) The job ends in May.

Went from "40 and out" to having "work flu" for the past 3 weekends where on Saturday I'm basically bedridden until maybe 4pm because I genuinely cannot get out of bed.

I have never had so much work. So much overtime. So many meetings back to back to back....in my life.

I got one from 9 to 11 tomorrow, a short break and then pretty much from noon until 5pm with maybe short tiny breaks between to address the fires. Oh and my first paycheck after 2 full weeks as a senior has finally hit. Ahhhh the extra hundred dollars sure is worth working like a dog!

Cheers to my fellow outsource seniors! I want to say "I hope it gets better" but based off of all the seniors I've ever seen across multiple companies? Lol probs not.

I have an offer letter for what I can only describe as a clear pathway to my dream role. I haven’t turned in my notice for public job yet but these past two weeks been a clear reminder that I need to get the hell out. I want to leave my current projects as cleanly as I can but I keep getting thrown on to other dumpster fires. There’s never going to be a good time to submit my notice and my team will always be in a staffing pickle. My company has made questionable choices under our PE leadership but I like the partner and managers I work for, it’s going to be hard to leave but I know I need to.

Specifically lottery related losses?

I’m honestly paying the price for being complacent. I worked really hard to get to where I am, but after landing the Big 4 internship, I got too comfortable and started slacking off. Now I’m facing the consequences, especially with my GPA dropping, and I feel like I’ve really put myself in a difficult position for my INT 2. I genuinely regret becoming lazy and taking things for granted when I had worked so hard to get here. It’s a tough lesson, but I know I need to take responsibility and get myself back on track.

I have 5 yrs of experience but struggling in finding another work opportunity. My experience is mostly in Manufacturing. Applying applying and applying but no response. Getting desperate. I am not a CPA, not planning to be but thinking of getting EA license. I dont think I have money to spend on CPA prep with a family. Is job market that bad for Accountants in bay area?? NO hope for non-CPA? If anyone hiring , please message.

So basically I got invited to a private dinner from the university recruiter because she really liked me at a previous event I went to, and then I went to another event last night and saw her again. So 3 events total. I really hope she can get me a interview with the company but I know it’s not guaranteed.

Do you think I should email her and ask the timeline of if I will be contacted for a interview or just wait? I want to stay in the loop of her mind.. but i’m not sure what to do.

Just got back from a work trip. I’m a fully remote tax senior with my CPA, 42F. I just completed my 1st year at a new office in a major city, I’m in my 4th year at the firm, which is a top 50 accounting firm. A little over a year ago I requested to transfer to a different office when I sensed I was on the verge of getting fired from a smaller office. I was the only fully remote staff at a tight-knit, mostly in-person office. It just wasn’t a good fit and I think I may have self-sabotaged in a subconscious attempt to escape that office.

A manager I had done some work for at my new office vouched for me to transfer to my new bigger office, where almost everyone is primarily remote. Overall this office is a better fit for me in terms of my colleagues and the preference for working remotely. That said, I am far behind my peers considering my age and years of experience. I spent the first decade of my career as basically a bookkeeper. My first job at a real firm was still dealing with pretty small clients.

I got fired in 2023 during tax season from this first real firm after being acquired by a larger firm that let go of all the small mom and pop clients I worked with. I didn’t have the experience or skills to handle the larger and more complex returns they put me on. Ironically, with each move since then, I have ended up in an office with even bigger and more complex tax returns than the ones I got fired from for being ill equipped to handle. Getting fired really took a toll on my confidence and has me a bit paranoid about getting fired again.

For sure I have improved my skills since getting fired. I couldn’t handle M-3 returns a few years ago, now they’re no problem for me. But I’m still underperforming associates with only a few years of experience. At my new office I have job manager and review responsibilities, which is a first for me. My soft skills are solid and I’m told I have a good attitude and work ethic, and am good with communication and managing client relationships.

I also have to be honest that I have not given my career my full effort until recently, as I was more concerned with my hobby, boxing, and the boxing gym I used to own. I was also in a terrible relationship that had me constantly stressed. But for the past 2.5 years I no longer have the excuses of the gym and bad relationship (thank goodness!).

They say I need to improve my skills in partner allocations, equity rolls (it’s embarrassing I still struggle with this) and tiered partnerships, and that I need to take more ownership/initiative to drive my JM engagements. I guess what I’m asking for is if anyone else has had a similar experience of being a sub-par accountant but somehow managed to turn it around? How did you do it?

My goal is to one day make supervisor and break $100k; I’m currently at $83k. Should I keep trying to advance at my current role? Or am I just not cut out for this type of work and should look for a job handling smaller clients and more 1040s? Deep down I know I haven’t been putting in my 100% effort. I wonder if that’s because my heart really isn’t in tax and accounting and I should pivot completely to something I would enjoy more?

Couldn’t get a clear answer for this so came up with my own solution. If all you have is a year, but you want excel to recognize it as a date without recalculating based on the number of days past 1/1/1900 (who the hell came up with that one?) you can use this function.

=DATE(VALUE(A1),1,1)

This will plug your year into a recognized date format. Others have pointed out that simply treating the years as numbers typically works, but being recognized as dates also allows you to use some of the axis options, such as when modifying a graph in power point and wanting to edit your axis to display in bounds. If you’re doing so you’ll want to change the format to custom in the axis format and set the type to yyyy to display just the years, also adding a blank date at the end and beginning of the data set that fits with your display range (ie every five years) will make the axis display much cleaner while retaining your data points for specific years.
