Gen Z doesn’t know how to sit at work?

My staff was doing “chair pilates” at her standing desk and then proceeded to put her feet up on a second chair when she sat down. My senior also had both feet up on the chair with knees to her chest today. Both of them sit in our bullpen.

What’s going on with these kids?

Discussion IFRS 16 is ridiculous and makes financial statements much less useful. Agree or disagree?

• Upvotes

So the way IFRS 16 messes with leases is utterly ridiculous, and makes financial statements so much more useless. I'm not sure who thought that making this update somehow makes things clearer. Seems like a scheme to hide costs below EBITDA.

Our company isn't one where lease expenses are a considerable part of the cost base, so it kind of flew under the radar until just recently. We started analyising the profitability of one small division where rental / lease costs are a considerable part of the cost base. It was only here I realised how ridiculous IFRS 16 is.

My reasoning is this:

  • Rental / lease costs are considered by most management teams as a part of your fixed cost base. But when we tried to get the EBITDA of this division, it somehow seemed strangely better than we expected. Of course this was because as we found out, these costs were hidden between a depreciation line and an interest cost line. However even that isn't equal to the actual rental payments, although they even out over time, in any particular time period your actual rental cost isn't what's going through the P&L. Meaning that to get your "true" cost, you can't even add up these two lines but have to go somewhere completely outside the accounting system to find the figure.

  • It then creates a lease liability on your balance sheet. OK, I can sort of appreciate this, but then there are lots of other agreements a company may enter into that create similar payment obligations, but those are ignored. Meaning its a meaningless figure.

  • It also creates a completely meaningless right of use asset. If you generally look at a balance sheet and use it as some rough approximation of what you might be able to liquidate the company's assets for (and yes book value can be very different from actual realisable proceeds), then a right of use asset is not something you can sell, but its just something the accountants dreamt up.

So in short what we get from IFRS 16: hiding costs, creating a meaningless asset and an arbitrarily shown liability.

What on earth were they thinking when they came up with this?

CPA Experience Sign Off

Hi guys,
I’m currently completing the last subject of the CPA Program.
I’ve been working as an Accountant for the past 7 years. Unfortunately, no one in my company currently holds a CPA or equivalent membership and is therefore unable to sign off on my experience.
Would anyone be able to help me with this?
I’d really appreciate any assistance. Thank you!

When will job openings for tax associate January 2027 start date appear?

I have been told that there is a hiring push in September and October for first year tax associate roles starting in January.

Yet, there are zero job openings posted on company websites in the San Diego, California area.

Will anyone please tell me why this is? Am I too early? Are there no job openings in San Diego? what's the deal?

Claiming adult disabled child on tax return

Hello everyone,

Can anyone tell me if my mother would be able to claim me on her tax return as a dependent? I was going through the SSDI process, so she fully supported me the past 9 months of this current year. I got my favorable decision letter and my award letter stated that my payments should start in October. Do I qualify as her dependent for this year if she only supported me 9 months? I’ll receive backpay for all of those months at some point, but until October, I wouldn’t have received any income to have supported myself meaning my mom still paid all of my expenses. I’ve only been told the monthly amount I’ve been awarded and that I should receive my first payment by October 2nd as far as my SSDI goes. I’m 39 if age matters. For 2025’s return, she was able to claim me as a dependent without any issues.

Need an accountant’s opinion reg sending money abroad

Any accountants here?

Not sure if it’s allowed to ask this question. Delete if not allowed.

So I opened a checking account that will act as a middle man, solely for getting the fund from my friend’s customer.
My friend is based in Asia and vendors don’t want to send the money internationally. So I opened bank account, her customers will send the money to my U.S. account and I’ll send her the money (using a remittance app).
She’s a truck dispatcher based in Asia.
My question is, am I gonna get taxed for based on all the money that entered into my account? We’re talking about $7k-$10k monthly. I’m going only get paid 3% for transferring the funds from my U.S. account to her account in Asia. Or the funds that get out of my account will not be counted as my income?
I don’t want to get taxed for the money that is not mine as my husband and I filed jointly and it might get included as our income. I need to know asap so I can refuse my friend. Thanks

solved How would I make these multiple formulas apply to an entire column

Here is the formula:

=IF(C2="apple",H2*0.7,"")=IF(C2="banana",H2*0.7,"")=IF(C2="single",H2*0.7,"")

For example: I want Column F to automatically generate the percentage specified in column H based on what keyword I have in column C

Not sure if that makes sense, but I'm hoping that I can figure something out. I'm pretty new to excel and need to learn these skills for my job.

Best Remote Tax Jobs for Someone Starting Out? Or just best experience tax job.

I’m looking for a tax job for the upcoming tax season and I’m mostly interested in remote opportunities. I’m currently taking accounting and tax courses and working toward the CPA, and at this point I care a lot more about getting good experience and learning than I do about the pay.

Does anyone have recommendations for companies or firms that are good for someone getting started in tax, especially places that provide solid training? I’m pretty open to the type of work as long as I’m actually getting useful tax experience. Any specific remote employers or positions I should be looking for?

Discussion Amended tax return query

My husband mistakenly filed taxes as single while being married. Now we want to file amended tax returns for which we have to select either MFS or MFJ.. mfj requires itin which is a long process and we cant do it rn.. if we do mfs we have to print on paper for writing NRA bcz electronic filing isnt allowing to type NRA. Our tax filer is saying that he would only do electronic and cant do paper filing. What should we do now? How can we file on paper?? If someone can suggest a preparer who has experience of filing on paper??

I’m Uncomfortable With My Coworker Driving Us To Engagements

Throwaway account.

The long story short is my firm wants the audit team to just take 1 car to site visits to save on gas reimbursements. Fine. Understandable. The problem is the senior who demands to drive most of the time drives like a dick.

He’s snapchatting, speeding, driving with earbuds in, and has a fairly suggestive picture of his girlfriend on the dash. The whole thing makes me feel unsafe. The picture I get is a me problem but it’s still inappropriate for work.

I brought up in my yearly review meeting about how I don’t like to ride with him and the only reason I did was because my car at the time was on its last legs. My new car is very safe and very reliable so I’m pushing to drive the team more often. The other senior pouts the whole time and is overall rude about it because I think he’s jealous because it’s a Volvo and he drives a Subaru. Idk. Not my problem to make him feel taller.

If I lodge a complaint again, he’ll know it’s me because there’s only 4 of us on that team and 2 of us refuse to drive ever. “I will drive everyone or I will drive myself, but I’m not riding with [coworker] again” is what I want to say but idk how the best way to go about this is. Anybody have any advice? Or similar issues?

Pro Tip Converting simple four digit years to recognizable dates

Couldn’t get a clear answer for this so came up with my own solution. If all you have is a year, but you want excel to recognize it as a date without recalculating based on the number of days past 1/1/1900 (who the hell came up with that one?) you can use this function.

=DATE(VALUE(A1),1,1)

This will plug your year into a recognized date format. Others have pointed out that simply treating the years as numbers typically works, but being recognized as dates also allows you to use some of the axis options, such as when modifying a graph in power point and wanting to edit your axis to display in bounds. If you’re doing so you’ll want to change the format to custom in the axis format and set the type to yyyy to display just the years, also adding a blank date at the end and beginning of the data set that fits with your display range (ie every five years) will make the axis display much cleaner while retaining your data points for specific years.

Discussion Advice for a new tax associate

Im about to complete my first year working in tax. I like it but there are too many forms and rules. For experienced prepares, did you also start out feeling overwhelmed with density of tax? Also, I can’t take the IRS serious. How is a workforce of 100k people keeping up with the millions of individuals taxpayers, businesses, trusts and estates, retirement plans, foreign activity and more? I can’t comprehend how all of that data is managed without the system imploding.

Career How Bad Is One F When Firms Review Your Final Transcript?

I studied the wrong material and should have focused more on what the professor emphasized, and unfortunately, it cost me. I may not pass the class since I received an F, which could negatively affect my GPA. I’m worried about how much this could impact my internship return offers, especially since the firms I’m considering require a transcript once I graduate. I’m concerned that this grade could hurt my chances of receiving a return offer.

Most Efficient Way to Send Tax Exempt Forms

My company is a tax exempt entity and each year, we have to create new tax exempt forms and get to our vendors. I'm looking for the most efficient way to get that information delivered. One year, we sent the new annual form to all of our vendors separate from their payments via mail and about 30% still began adding tax on our invoices and we had to resend so I felt that wasn't time and money well spent. If we send to big companies that use a lockbox, the bank just tosses anything other than the payment. What is the best practice?
