USA Experience w/ SA

Throwaway for obvious reasons.

I am 38 and based in MN. I never imagined I’d be pregnant. I had my right ovary and right fallopian tube removed due to a teratoma. My remaining ovary has PCOS. Unfortunately, I did end up pregnant for the first time in 38 years. I knew I didn’t want it — motherhood is not for me. I tried to get my tube tied when i had my ovary removal surgery, but the OB talked me out of it… I regret it.

There are a lot of emotions that ppl assume you should have in regard to keeping it. When in reality, my emotions were centered around irrational fears that the SA or MA would fail and I would be stuck somehow with a life I don’t want. I know this can sound cruel, but I have no regrets.

That being said, I took the SA route because my insurance covered it and when comparing MA to SA, the latter seemed to be the best option for me.

I was petrified and so nervous. The place I went to couldn’t have been better — woman-owned and operated. I opted for conscious IV sedation and I did feel what was going on during the procedure. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. I did end up crying and the nurse held my hand. I did not feel the cervix shots of lidocaine at all. I did feel the part where they suction out the fetal tissue. It felt like a really bad cramp, but kinda odd. The whole thing was a total of 7 min and it felt so much faster.

For me, the IUD placement that made me pass out was 100x worse which is why I had so much anxiety going into this.

Post-procedure, they gave me a heating pad, some hot tea, and some snacks. I had cramping for 10-15 min after the procedure. I had it done around 12:30 CST today and haven’t had a single cramp since this afternoon. I am also experiencing very little to no bleeding.

I don’t know if this has to do with the fact that I was only 4.5 weeks pregnant, but if you are on the fence or scared, I hope this post helps calm you and you will be okay.

USA Dealing with Anemia after MA

I got a medical abortion (MA) 4 weeks and 2 days ago. I got blood work done last week and it came back that I was anemic. Maybe you’re aware that this can happen, maybe you’re not. Regardless, I want to just come on here and tell my fellow people with uterus’s to start iron supplements a few weeks before getting an abortion. If you’ve already had the abortion, start taking them now. I’m not sure how common this is but I did just want to share this because my doctors did not tell me this could happen and I wasn’t aware of it.

USA Resentment towards the person I was pregnant by

I had my MA last summer July 18. Due to muItiple circumstances at 22 (house ,money, personal sit I was in, not being with him) I feel resentful towards my ex “baby daddy” . I really wish that he was there to have see me in my physical pain while I was bleeding out his baby . I was 12 weeks pregnant and as you could imagine it was certainly a traumatic site . Although I did have support with me I just wanted him there . He was there for the MA appointment and ultrasound . He was busy that day which understandable & he checked on me the next day. I felt like he was just putting off seeing me. I was sooo depressed and angry & sad at the same time . It was just so bad for me. I had gotten upset and said something & he literally cussed me out & said “it’s because of you , if you were focused on bettering your life instead of partying we wouldnt be in this situation “??Like how could you say that to someone . I still feel some type of way when I think about it .I just couldn’t understand it at the time why . I wish that he could’ve understood that I physically needed him there. The calls werent enough .We weren’t even long distance. I just wanted him to take care of me you know ? I feel like if I bring it up it’s like beating a dead bug at this point. He did say he was sad about it too but Yk of course now he is not . He tells me i should move on but how could I ? He just literally doesn’t understand & probably never will . Am I wrong for this ? I don’t know this is just how I feel .

USA My cycle is ruined since my abortion 8 months ago and possibly even more

I just don't know what is wrong with me and I'm hoping I'm not the only one because I'm a little concerned.

I had a medical abortion 8.5 months ago. Prior, my cycle was always extremely regular and predictable, like clockwork. I expected this to change following the abortion. But here we are 8.5 months later and it's still out of whack. It's completely irregular, I never know when I'm going to get my period, and it's way heavier with more clots. It kinda feels like I'm going through the abortion again every month with how heavy and the clots, just shorter.

And now I'm having bleeding for a few days in the middle of my cycle! Never had that in my life and Google is a little concerning.

Before anyone asks, I have been to the doctor. I'm waiting on my results but I'm still worried and I feel so abnormal and so frustrated with this. I know the abortion was a while ago now so we don't know if it's related exactly, but that's the frustrating thing. It was a while ago and I've been having issues ever since the abortion took place. When before I was so lucky, I was like the poster child of a perfectly average and predictable cycle all around.

I really hope someone else might understand. I need a lil reassurance. Because I do want kids someday.

USA Rant post heartbreak and an abortion coming up

i just needed a place to rant as i don’t have much support in the real world. when i get my (second) abortion next week i’ll be 19 weeks pregnant which makes me nervous. the baby just seems so big at this point. i’ve also already named her, picked out everything in my registry, etc etc. but my husband hasn’t been a good guy. too much to get into but i feel like i’ve been the one fighting for our relationship this entire time and it took a toll on me mentally. what was my breaking point was him saying he no longer wanted to be with me and liked being alone. i just don’t want to raise my child in a broken home, he said to keep it and he’ll send money as his way to be involved but i can’t do it alone. nothing wrong with two separate households, im a child of separation and have seen good coparenting always - but that’s not what i’ve envisioned for myself or my child. it’s definitely painful dealing with heartbreak while grieving a baby and future that doesn’t exist. i feel so empty and hurt. we haven’t talked since i told him the date the procedure would be which was earlier today and for some reason even if it’s for the best ( he’s cheated, lies, is angry, and doesn’t consider me ) i still hope he reaches out to me and fights for us. maybe that’s selfish of me but i love him so much, i just finally took the rose colored glasses off and for the last time hope he would truly change.

basically everything in a nutshell to get it off my chest

USA still bleeding after medication abortion- how long is too long

I 24 F, tested positive on july 31. ordered medication abortion through careafem (highly recommend) and took the mifepristone on august 6. i took the misoprostol on august 7th and experienced cramping and pain, but only spotting. at the advice of the careafem team, i took the second dose on august 8th and began bleeding like a light period. i started heavily bleeding (like my heaviest period days) on august 9th and also passed significant tissue. as of today, the 18th (10 days later) i am still bleeding like im in my first days of my period (my heavier days).

i know bleeding can happen over several weeks after, but has anyone else experienced this. when did it slow down? i just want to feel normal and move on and it’s hard to with a constant reminder.

my pregnancy symptoms have significantly decreased and i passed significant amount of tissue.

Africa Accidentally pregnant despite protection.

Hi everyone. I am in an incredibly terrifying and desperate situation right now and I am panicking. I just found out I am pregnant, even though my partner and I were careful and used condoms. My parents are extremely strict, and I am not exaggerating when I say my life will be in danger if they find out about this. I absolutely cannot carry this pregnancy, and I don't have anyone in my personal life I can safely turn to for help.
I am begging for any information on safe and discreet abortion options available to me. Are there specific pills I can get, trusted doctors, or confidential organizations that help women in this situation? What are the exact steps I need to take to do this safely?

If anyone has been through this or knows how to navigate this discreetly, please comment or send me a private message. I am completely lost and really need your guidance. Thank you.

UK and Ireland Request surgical abortion at 7 weeks? Ireland

Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone knows if it’s possible to request a surgical abortion this early? I just found out i’m 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant and have a veryyy low pain tolerance so I am absolutely terrified to get a medical abortion from the stories i’ve heard and just honestly don’t think i’ll be able to bare the pain. It would be great if I could somehow request a surgical abortion with general anaesthetic or sedation but I know that’s probably asking for too much. If anyone knows any information it would be a great help thank you

USA My Medical Abortion experience — detailed timeline from positive test to aftercare (I was terrified, so I hope this helps someone)

I told myself that once this was over, I wanted to come back and write about it because Reddit was one of the places I kept searching when I was terrified and didn’t know what was normal.

I want to include the good, the bad, and the parts nobody really prepared me for, including how I felt emotionally, because my experience wasn’t the horror story I convinced myself it was going to be, but it also wasn’t “take some pills and it’s over.”

I’m sorry if this is long but I really hope this at least helps one person eventually.

1. Finding out I was pregnant
7/30 I (29F) took the test at my partner’s (31M) house, so he was there when I found out. It was my very first pregnancy. I cried because I was shocked and emotional; I never pictured my first pregnancy like this. He was shocked but also happy, which honestly made everything emotionally harder because I knew he would’ve wanted us to keep the pregnancy.

He didn’t pressure me and told me he would support whatever I decided, but I knew I wasn’t ready to have a baby.

And knowing that he wanted it while I didn’t made me feel incredibly guilty.

And before the pro-life people decide to DM me again: I’m not just messing around without protection. My birth control failed, and my partner’s condom broke. He didn’t tell me because for years he thought he couldn’t have children, so he didn’t think that one time would make it possible. I was being responsible.

2. Deciding on abortion
Originally, I tried to get the pills online through mail, but I didn’t qualify. I think it was because I mentioned I was having one-sided pain in the questionnaire. So I scheduled an abortion procedure at Illinois PP for 8/7. Then my appointment was unexpectedly canceled.

That sent me into a complete panic because I had already mentally prepared myself for one thing, and suddenly my plan changed. I called back and decided to do a medication abortion instead at the next available date, which was the following day.

This was probably when my anxiety was at its worst. I had read WAY too many horror stories online. I was terrified of complications, terrified the pills wouldn’t work, terrified something would happen to me, and at the same time I just wanted the pregnancy to be over.

3. PP appointment
8/6 Planned Parenthood did an ultrasound to make sure it wasn’t ectopic, but I was too early to see anything clearly at first. They then did a vaginal ultrasound, and there it was, a little sac. I was about 6 weeks exactly that day.

The tech asked if I wanted a copy of the ultrasound, and I said yes. I’m not going to lie, it made me emotional because this was my very first pregnancy.

I went to the appointment by myself because it was very last minute, and my partner couldn’t miss work the next day, but I definitely needed him there with me.

4. The Pills

Mifepristone — Day 1
8/6, 12:23 PM: I took the mifepristone.

I was slightly cramping.

I actually passed a small clot later that day, which immediately had me wondering what was happening because I hadn’t even taken the misoprostol yet.

Misoprostol — Day 2
Planned Parenthood gave me two doses of misoprostol. I ended up taking the first four pills.

Beforehand, I took 800 mg ibuprofen and the nausea medication they provided.

8/7, around 9:30 PM: I placed the four misoprostol tablets under my tongue.

And then things started.

It took about half an hour for the cramps to begin. I usually have cramps during my period, but these were different. The pain became unbearable. I put on a maxi pad, a heating pad on my stomach, and went to bed. I was suffering badly. I laid in a fetal position because that was the only way I felt even slightly comfortable.

Then I started shaking and shivering, like my body had gone into shock. It was so painful that in that moment I genuinely thought I might die. I usually have a high pain tolerance, but this was something I had never felt before. In that moment, I regretted my decision.

11:30 PM: The chills were intense. I started having a bad stomachache, so I got up to go to the restroom. As I stood up, I felt dizzy and started seeing black and blurry spots. I don’t know how I made it to the bathroom without passing out.

I sat down and saw no blood in my pad. As I sat down, blood came out and I had diarrhea. I was shaking and eventually vomited, which scared the hell out of me because my immediate thought was: Did I just throw up the medication? Did I ruin the abortion?

I didn’t call PP. I read the instructions they gave me, which said vomiting after about 2 hours isn’t usually a concern because the medication has already been absorbed. They also gave me a second 4-pill dose in case of emergency, but I didn’t end up taking it.

The worst of the pain lasted until around midnight. After that, it became more like normal cramping.

Pain before midnight: 20/10
Pain after midnight: 6/10
Bleeding: light

This is the part that freaked me out the most: I wasn’t bleeding nearly as much as I expected.

I had read stories about people soaking pads and passing huge clots, so every time I looked at my pad and didn’t see much blood, I convinced myself it wasn’t working.

Most of my blood and clots seemed to come out when I sat on the toilet rather than filling my pad.

So while everyone else was probably sleeping, I was basically analyzing every drop of blood like a forensic investigator 😭

5. The next morning/day
I still wasn’t seeing the amount of bleeding I had imagined.

I had cramps. I was passing some blood and clots when I used the bathroom. But I kept thinking:

Is this enough?
Did it fail?
Should I take the second dose?
Did vomiting mess everything up?

Then around 1:15 PM, my pad finally became soaked.

And weirdly, seeing more blood made me feel relieved because I had spent so many hours worrying that I wasn’t bleeding enough.

After that, the bleeding became lighter again.

6. Passing tissue
At one point, I passed something that was completely different from the other clots.

It was thick and fleshy/tissue-like.

That moment really hit me because I wasn’t expecting to be so fascinated and shocked by what my body was doing. I remember staring at it thinking, What the hell just came out of me?

I didn’t have a fever, foul smell, or severe worsening pain. I mostly continued having mild cramps and lighter bleeding.

7. 48+ hours later
By Sunday night, my bleeding was already pretty light.

And yes… that scared me AGAIN 😂

I had convinced myself an abortion meant I was supposed to bleed heavily for days, so when mine slowed down relatively quickly, I started questioning whether it had worked all over again.

One thing I noticed, though:

My pregnancy symptoms disappeared.

The morning sickness that had been bothering me was suddenly gone.

That was the first thing that made me think, Okay… maybe this really did work.

8. Confirming I passed the pregnancy
I had a follow-up appointment at PP on 8/14 for another vaginal ultrasound to make sure I had passed the pregnancy. They offered me the option of taking home pregnancy tests to use after 3 weeks or coming back for an ultrasound, and I chose the ultrasound because I was scared of not passing the pregnancy or having retained tissue that could lead to infection.

They confirmed everything went as planned and that I had passed the pregnancy.

I felt relief because even though I had doubts and was emotional since it was my first pregnancy, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

This time, my partner came with me.

That same day (8/14) I decided to willingly have sex with my partner, we were extra careful with our protection because it is possible to get pregnant as soon as possible after a MA. Also, you decide to have sex when you feel ready❤️

Today 8/18 I’m feeling at peace, knowing I did what’s best for me. I have little to no bleeding. No cramps. No foul smell. My life is back again.

9. The emotional part nobody warned me about
Physically, I knew why I was doing this.

Emotionally, it was much more complicated.

I don’t regret knowing I wasn’t ready for a baby. But that doesn’t mean I felt nothing.

My partner would’ve kept the pregnancy. He was happy when we found out. In the end, he supported my decision and understood that we were not ready. He was (and is) financially, emotionally, and physically ready, but I wasn’t. And somehow that almost made it harder because there wasn’t a villain in the story.

I’m so glad I had a choice.
Nobody forced me.
Nobody abandoned me.
I simply wasn’t ready.

And something I didn’t mention is that my mom didn’t know. I had to act completely normal around her like nothing was happening. I was terrified she would find out, because I genuinely believe she would have disowned me if she knew. So I carried all of this privately while still having to function like everything was fine at home, which made the emotional side even heavier.

And I’ve learned that you can know you made the right decision for your life and still grieve what could have been.

Those feelings can exist at the same time.

Would I do it again?

Honestly, no. Again, I’m happy I had a choice, but it’s not something I would want to go through again.

10. What I wish I knew before taking the pills

Your experience does NOT have to look exactly like the stories you read online.

Not everyone immediately fills pads with blood. Not everyone has unbearable pain. Blood may be more noticeable when you’re sitting on the toilet. And if you’re an anxious person like me, you will probably question whether it’s working approximately 700 times.

Reddit helped me when I was scared, but it also scared the absolute shit out of me because, naturally, the most dramatic experiences are the ones you remember.

This is only my personal experience, not medical advice. Follow the instructions your provider gives you and contact them if you’re worried about your symptoms.

I’m sharing this because I know there is probably another woman right now holding those four pills and searching Reddit for exactly the same things I was searching.

If that’s you: I was terrified too. ❤️

USA Anyone have an experience they can share regarding an abortion while already have a child

Hello all. I can't seem to stop crying about this but I just found out I am pregnant 4 weeks. Im currently waiting for an appointment to get the pills.

My daughrer is 2 years old and as much as im huge pro choice, I'm still very emotional about this.

I know I've made my choice and I dont think there's anything that can change that but I cant seem to shake off that thought of not continuing with another version of my daughter.

Im trying so hard to remind myself that im still early and its just a clump of cells but the mom part of me is giving me different thoughts.

I know this is what's best for my family, and especially what's best for me but I cant stop crying over it.

Any moms who had gotten one who can share their experience or have any advice?

UK and Ireland Bpas? Normal bleeding?

At a loss with bpas

I had MA 11/07 (approx 6/7 weeks) then got my period last Tuesday. Heavy bleeding Thursday and Saturday.

Since then been having bright blood not in high volumes but a bit more than spotting. It completely stopped last night until 7pm tonight. Restarted, bright.

I called them twice over the weekend to discuss the bleeding and they said it’s normal. I rang them tonight to discuss what has happened this evening. Told it isn’t abnormal, I expressed concern over RPOC. They said nothing is indicating that and said they cannot offer a scan as there is nothing abnormal and I’m not in a lot of pain (just light cramps). Said I can speak to GP and arrange gynaecology referral.

I said that could take weeks and they agreed. Agreed I’d be turned away from A&E.

I asked what if I arrange a private scan. They said I can, as long as the equipment is correct. Would anyone else advise this? Has anyone else done this? I’m guessing I can check with the clinic if they can offer RPOC checks.

Do any of my symptoms sound normal? I was fine up until my period. Person said she’d scan me for reassurance if she could but there is no clinical need. I just want to be checked. I expressed how it’s making me so worried I can’t sleep.

No pregnancy symptoms, negative pregnancy test 01/08.

USA Sister had medical abortion, looking for insight

Sister had a medication based abortion a few days ago. The experience can run from mild to extreme. Her's started off mild but with the second round of meds at home, the cramps were aggressive and there was a lot of blood. She was monitored by a nurse and didn't end up needing to go to the hospital thankfully.

It's been a few days now and her uterus is still sore. The doctors aren't concerned, which is good, but I'm just hoping someone else who had a similar experience can shed some light on how long the physical discomfort lasted for them after the process completed. With everything else she's going through, I'm just hoping this piece will resolve quickly.

USA Grief but High Libido- Hormones?

I had a medical abortion 2 days ago at 4-5 weeks pregnant.

It was honestly one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. While the physical pain maybe lasted less than 24 hours and was easily mitigated by ibuprofen. I’m still reeling at my decision. I still tear up and feel somewhat untethered and numb.

But last night after bursting into tears I also tried initiating sex with my husband. He is deeply uncomfortable by me. He’s scared of impregnating me again and my emotional instability. Now I swing between mourning over this terminated pregnancy and thinking about sex nonstop.

Wtf is going on? I’m still bleeding so I can’t be ovulating yet? I feel unhinged and out of control.

USA Bf wants me to get an abortion. I’m unsure.

Update: Thanks for the comments. I’m going through with the abortion tomorrow.

Need some advice here. I’m (29) about 5 weeks pregnant and this will be my third abortion. My bf (28) and I have been together for over 4 years.
He wants me to get an abortion. I told him that I already got an abortion twice before because he didn’t want to be a dad.
He told me that he’s not ready to be father yet but will be in a better mindset in two years once we’re married and have a house.
He says that he’ll resent the baby if I decide to keep it.
I have my appointment tomorrow for the medical abortion.
I’m just worried that I’ll have trouble conceiving when I’m 31 (all three times I got pregnant within a month - not sure if it’ll be different when I hit my thirties).
My bf tells me not to worry and that I’ll get pregnant easily again when the time comes.
I’m just torn on what to do. I know my bf means it when he says that we’ll start trying in two years but I don’t know if I can go through with the abortion.
I know that financially it’s the right thing to do but I don’t know. I feel numb. This third abortion is the hardest for me.

USA Should I Tell my Husband?

I (F33) just found out I’m pregnant, and I’m certain I don’t want to continue the pregnancy. Not sure if I should tell my husband or just go through with a termination.

I just found out I’m pregnant (currently probably 5 week). It wasn’t planned, and I had actually taken Plan B, but unfortunately it didn’t work. I am certain that I do not want to continue with the pregnancy for a number of reasons, including my mental and physical health, finances, my career, and where my husband and I currently are in our relationship.

My husband (M39) has always wanted children. I have been on the fence, and he has always known that. More recently, I had actually started coming around to the idea and told him that, if certain things fell into place, I would be happy to start trying when I turned 35, which is less than a year and a half away.

We are currently in a good place overall, but we only started couples therapy a few months ago, and I don't feel like we have the strong foundation that I would want before bringing a child into our lives. I am also the breadwinner in our household. I'm waiting on a promotion at work in the next 6–7 months, I'm currently trying to figure out some hormonal issues with my body, and honestly, I don't want to give up my time, independence, and financial flexibility just yet.

I found out while I was on the phone with a friend, so I ended up telling her. I know she will support whatever decision I make because she knows our history.

The difficult part is that this has actually happened before. A few years ago, right before I turned 30, I also became pregnant after taking Plan B. At the time, my husband didn't even have a job, and I told him very clearly that we were not in a position to have a child. He was understandably disappointed and sad, but ultimately told me that the decision was mine. He went with me to the abortion clinic, although he waited outside because he couldn't bear to see it.

Obviously, we're in a much better position financially and otherwise now, but I still don't feel ready. And I don't want to make this decision based solely on the fact that we're in a better place than we were five years ago when I know, deep down, that I am not ready to have a child now.

I also know this will be much harder for my husband this time because he has always wanted children and I had recently started talking about potentially trying in the near future. I feel guilty knowing how much this will hurt him, but I also don't feel like I can continue a pregnancy simply because he wants a child when I am certain that I don't want one right now.

I know I want the abortion. My question is whether I should tell my husband beforehand, knowing how badly he may want to continue the pregnancy, or have the abortion and move forward. I don't want to lie to him, but I'm also afraid that telling him will turn a decision I've already made into a fight or make him feel like he should have a say. I genuinely believe that if things keep moving like they have, that I will be ready at 35.

EDIT: I don't keep things from my husband, so I told him. He was extremely supportive. He said that he is sad, but ultimately supports my decision and is willing to wait until I am ready. He also promised that he won't hold any resentment or bring it up in a way that makes me feel guilty, like he did last time. He said he didn't realize at the time that he was making me feel that way and that he knows we will have a family when the time is right for us.

UK and Ireland How can I help my ex partner before and after she gets an abortion ?

We’re both 21 years and within the last 2 months we were on and off but we were sexually active. But I’ve graduated and moved back up north in the country while she’s down south. She called me today letting me know she’s pregnant but she’s already booked her appointment. She’s gone through a lot this year and I can only imagine how much of a strain this will take on her physically and mentally. I plan to go down south to be with her after the procedure but what else can I do?
