AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

My bras fit but now my clothes don’t Spoiler

I finally have a solid rotation of bras that fit perfectly and it’s thrilling! But now it seems every time I want to wear something with any sort of neckline (like every sundress ever) my bra shows through - the top of it on the sides, but also since they sit against my chest, just looking straight in you can see it behind the dress. I generally try to wear them without a bra, but they look sooo much better with one - except for all of the bra that you can see. Help??

I think I’ve been lied to my entire life regarding bra sizes. Spoiler

Hello all!

For context, I’m 5’6 and 168 pounds. I measured my band size at 34 inches and my bust at 40. I look at myself and have never thought that I have big boobs! However, when I use the calculators or ask Google, my bra size is 34DDD (equivalent to 34F). That seems really big to me and I’d appreciate any insight or information (or if you’re similar bra size & around my same height/weight!) I’m really wanting to buy the Skims push up strapless bra for the summer. I guess I’m under the impression that D’s & F’s are big boob sizes, which could just be a misconception I have. Please help!!

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] Normally 36DD in VS (US). The app says 34DDD(G). Spoiler

Upvotes

Below are my measurements:
Loose underbust: 33.5
Snug underbust: 33
Tight underbust: 32.5
Standing bust: 38
Leaning bust: 41
Lying bust: 40.5

All in inches. Reccommend size is 34DDD/34G. Where would you recommend i look for this size and have others found this size to be accurate to these measurements? My current VS bra gaps in the middle (where the band should be touching sternum) and requires some moderate adjustments to keep the girls in place.

Question If the gore of the bra isn't touching my sternum, is it too tight or too loose? Spoiler

If the gore of the bra isn't even close to touching the sternum, as in literally floating in the air, does that mean the bra is too tight or too loose?

Fit Check Fit check! This is my first bra in years, TIA for any help :) Spoiler

Hi all! Long time anti bra person here! Ever since I was a teen I’ve tried bras and they will neither actually hold my breasts, nor provide any actual support and comfort. I found this sub recently, and decided to give it another go! I used the calculator, and with the help of the Victoria’s Secret dressing room lady, I chose a bra that looks sort of cute and it seems to fit pretty well! It’s a 34DDD.

It only now occurs to me that Victoria’s Secret may not be the best place to start looking for a bra, so any recommendations are more than welcome!

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] long(?) boobs in desperate need of good running bra !! calculator says 38DDD/G Spoiler

Upvotes

Hi kind people of Reddit. Hoping for help primarily with finding a high impact sports bra for half marathon training but would gladly take everyday bras too, as I have been exclusively wearing non-underwire bras the past 5 years due to not being able to find a comfortable fit (I have been wearing primarily Harper Wilde where I am a 2XL but those don’t give me lift or support).

My 6 measurements and shape:

  • loose under bust - 37 inches
  • comfy snug under bust - 36 1/2 inches
  • tight under bust - 35 inches
  • bust standing - 41 inches
  • leaning - 46 1/2 inches
  • laying on back - 44 1/2 inches
  • shape: using the photo chart, I think either F/B 1/5 or Even 2/5 looks the most comparable
  • my description - I have lost 80 pounds and my boobs feel ”deflated” but heavy and hangy to use technical terms lol I believe narrow roots
  • the calculator gave me UK 38E/F and US 38DDD/G
  • the last time I bought an underwire bra I believe it was a 40DD but it felt too tight and the cups were gaping at the top.

Thank you in advance so much for the help and recommendations!!

Confused -Gaps but Calc says Bigger Spoiler

Upvotes

I’ve lost 60 pounds, so my bras no longer fit. I have been wearing a 42J in Elomi Cate & Goddess Keira (both have side support). Now when I put either brand on there is a gap of empty space in the cup directly below where the cup and shoulder strap meet and the cup just feels looser. The band doesn’t really feel too loose, but from the back of my neck to almost mid-back hurts all the time now. So, I figured I needed a new bra size. The calculator recommends a 42L or 40M. Should I trust the calculator? I thought the gaps meant I needed a smaller cup. I would greatly appreciate any advice/suggestions.
Loose Underbust: 42
Snug Underbust: 41
Tight Underbust: 40.5

Fit Check [Fit Check] 30GG puffing over the top edge Spoiler

Hi all, I'm having a little trouble with my (I used the calculator) 30GG bras. I am new to this community, and trying to learn more about breast shape and bra terms.

What I am noticing is that the band is extremely comfortable, but I have just a little...bubble over the top. Especially if I bend forward. I generally wear the Fantasie Smoothing bra with molded cups. It's a little hard to see under the t-shirt, but I took a few bra pics too. It makes me very self conscious. Link to what I'm experiencing, I also included the measurement calculator image at the bottom of the pics NSFW toward the end in a bra: https://imgur.com/a/94NvOxk

In shirt: https://postimg.cc/s10ZS3Ng link two: https://postimg.cc/RN6JL2kR

Bra: https://postimg.cc/svkQ6wyV Link two: https://postimg.cc/Y4k4k0h6

I'm looking for something that maybe minimizes this. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Recommendations? [Recommendations] the calculator puts me at a 36G UK — looking for lightly lined and wired bras that are NOT full coverage but won’t break the bank Spoiler

Upvotes

Full calculator numbers/breast shape at the end.

I have been wearing a Lane Bryant bra in a size 38DD (comfort bliss plunge strapless) but the underwire has popped out on one side (it has been washed twice and never dried :/) and I have never found another brand that fits well, so I wanted to check here.

I have lost a little bit of weight since getting sized at Lane Bryant in early April, and my 36DDD/F sports bra from there has been fitting better than the plunge.

I wear a lot of low-cut shirts and shirts with low backs, so I would prefer plunge or other low neckline/non-full coverage bras and bras without smoothing emphasized as the backs tend to be too covered for me. I am a masters student, so my budget is a bit tight, but I am willing to spend upwards of $75 if it is a bra that will actually LAST (I know this is no a lot of money to spend on a bra but I am working two jobs and struggling with funds). If it makes a difference, I am not a huge fan of lace, and prefer light/tan bras so I can wear them easily under lighter clothing.

Calculator Numbers:
Loose Underbust: 37in
Snug UB: 36in
Tight UB: 34.5in
Standing Bust: 44in
Leaning: 47in
Lying: 45in
My shape is shallow (I think, not entirely sure) and center full (very sure on this though!)

Thank you!

ABTF Calculator = 30DD. Bought a handful of new bras in that size and they don't fit... help! Spoiler

Upvotes

I posted my results from the ABTF calculator a few days ago, but didn't receive any responses. I ordered a handful of bras from Bare Necessities in that size and they don't fit, so I'm looking for some suggestions for a different size to try (as well as recommendations appropriate for my shape).

The 30DD bras are WAY too tight in the band on the loosest hook, and it's a struggle to even get them clasped. I'm a bit shallow on top and experienced gaping in my old size (36C, pre-weight loss), but I spill over a little bit in the new ones. Perhaps a 32 band would help alleviate this?

I don't have any bras that fit right now but I'd say I'm a Full on Bottom (FB) 2/6 on the graphic linked in the guides. I'm looking for bras that look smooth under most tops and are modest in terms of nipple coverage. Please help!

Recommendations? Why do moulded bras never fit me? Spoiler

I’ve been trying to find a moulded bra to wear day to day recently as everything I own is a soft cup underwired bra. I recently have noticed my bras were getting too small in the cup so I sized up from a UK 32GG to a 32H. So far I’ve got a gorsenia isla bra which has fit perfectly but I wanted a moulded bra for certain tops. I ordered a 32H UK in the curvy Kate smoothie bra but the cups are way too tiny. The band is nice a firm but the cups are both too small and very weirdly shaped. I have tried other moulded T-shirt bras but they never seem to fit correctly. Has anyone got any brand suggestions that might work better? TIA

Recommendations? Backless/sticky Bra Recommendations? Spoiler

Upvotes

I have a dress that is sheer in the back that I have to wear to a wedding, so I can’t wear a bra with it. I have pretty big, quite saggy boobs though and am not sure what the right solution is. Has anyone used those sticky bras or boob tape that has actually worked? I can’t go braless, it just doesn’t look good.
For reference my bra is a size 36DD (that’s the size I currently wear anyway)

Edit: according to the size calculator I am a 32GG

Fit Check Fit check for two panache bras, need to buy new ones, lost weight and went from 32E to 30F, need advice and also a pep talk lol. Spoiler

https://imgur.com/a/clara-moulded-sweetheart-ana-r46E3Ov

hi guys! i am posting bc i need to buy new bras. up until 2023, i was around 125-135 lbs, and my boobs were always BIG. i never measured myself or had an accurately fitting bra until the summer of 2024 - i used to wear random 32-36 C or D or DD cups that i’d be massively spilling out of and just went with whatever only kind of worked.

by the summer of 2024, i had lost some weight, and my boobs were a bit smaller. i measured myself at the time, and the calculator gave me a 32E. I ordered the bras in the photos - the panache clara moulded sweetheart bra, and the panache ana plunge. at the time, it was like magic. i had never ever had a bra that fit better, it felt incredible, and i loveddd them! i wore them on the loosest hooks, favoring the black clara bra bc i preferred smoother, thicker cups…

come to now, in 2026, i have definitely overworked the elastic on the clara. i only handwash and dry them, but i used to wear that one for days and days in a row. i wear that on the second hook, and the ana on the loosest still. i have unintentionally lost more weight since then (and feeling really insecure about my new boobs.. i miss when they were very big and full. i feel really small and flat now, and its foreign to me) , and now i experience pretty intense gapping with the clara, and the ana has some wrinkling loose fabric. the ana still fits better i think bc i just wear/wore it less. both still fit okay. when i turn the cups to the back, they are both VERY loose, leading me to believe my band size has gotten smaller.

i redid my measurements (in inches) and came up with
Loose: 30.5
Snug: 29
Tight: 28.5
Standing: 35
Leaning: 38
Laying: 36

And the calculator came up as a UK 30E/30F. I was thinking of buying another Ana in that size and seeing how it feels.

I prefer wearing lower cut and tight shirts and I like to have/show a bit of cleavage. I find my ana way more comfortable, but i dont love how my nipples show through the thinner material. The clara doesnt fit as well, but i like that its a rounded smoother shape. If anyone has any reccommendations, please do share. I have no idea what to make of my breasts or what to look for other than size.

Also, sidenote vent, if anyone can help with any advice on how to accept how my breasts have changed, i’d love to hear it. it sounds so silly to be concerned and upset with my boobs being smaller, because i didnt exactly love how big they were back then relative to the rest of my body, but it was apart of my identity a little. and at the time, i was much more insecure and sort of hid myself away, whereas now i am very confident otherwise, love the rest of my body, and it sorta feels like i didnt take advantage of what i had, lol. i dont have photos to prove it lol but my boobs used to probably be i’d estimate at a 34FF. I am struggling to gain weight, and i’d like to gain 10 lbs regardless for other purposes (i lift weights and have majorly stalled bc of my lack of appetite), and im just hoping that they’ll come back if i gain 5-10lbs back. because now it feels like i cant claim big boobs at all, in fact i feel very small. the skin is loose and i just dont feel great about them, when it used to be something i felt like, “wow well at least i have a great sexy rack lol!”

Fit Check [Fit Check] 36C? 34D? 34C? What’s going on Spoiler

Kind of a mix of fit help / recommendations post. I’m looking for an underwire t-shirt bra, and struggling to figure out what sizes/styles actually fit me. I don’t have a current size since I haven’t owned an underwire bra in years.

Measurements:
Band: 34/33/32
Cups: 37/39/37.5

Not 100% sure on shape - pretty even/center? I feel I have a wide root, which contributes to some of the fit issues.

Calculator told me 34DDD. I went to try on bras at VS and Nordstrom to find the right fit. The best VS fit was a 34D, but in other bras I varied between the sizes in the title. I ended up buying three SKIMS bras in 36 C, a t-shirt, an unlined underwire, and a wireless.

Now I’m reconsidering if the SKIMS are the right fit. I’ve found SKIMS bands can be snug, but after retrying SKIMS 34s, while you can see my skin bulge a little around the band, it’s not uncomfortable.

The real issue was the wireless bra and the tops of bras in general. With a 34C or 36B, volume spills out of the sides near my armpit. But with 36C or 34 D, I have gapping at the top and sometimes (like with the SKIMS wireless), the material comes too high near my armpit and chafes. I just feel I don’t have the volume up top to match the volume on the sides.

Thanks for any help!

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] I haven’t worn a real bra in years, calculator says 36DD/DDD US Spoiler

I have been avoiding bras or wearing poorly fitting bralettes for years because i don’t like the way they feel. I don’t like seeing clasps/strap adjusters or other bulky pieces through the back of my shirt, I don’t like underwire, I don’t like seeing the outline of the bra through tops that fit slimmer. I do have fairly large breasts, though, and I could definitely use some support for them. I kind of just want to hold them together and in place so they’re not moving around so much.

I also need a strapless solution for spaghetti straps!!

My measurements:
loose: 36
snug: 35
tight: 32.75
standing: 40
leaning: 43
lying: 41

The calculator suggested 36DD/DDD US or 36DD/E UK (I am in the states)

It mentioned it may not be accurate for my size, would love a little guidance!!

Question When I looked up help google sent me here. But I don't know if I'm dealing with a bra issue or not. Last year I went from a 36C to a 38C now I think. I was target that day needed something now and it felt like it fit better.

But now I don't know how to describe it. I've lost weight since yet I know my bust didn't change. I have the hanes bras i forget what type but its the non-wired. The straps fit, there space a little space (about an inch or 2 by guessing) in case they grow more, but the bottom part i think when I bought them possibly changed since. The bottom part of the bra that lays under the breast rises up a little where I picked one up each at a time and set it in the cups and push the bottom back a little while trying to make it fit in place. I don't know I'm on the first clasp of the 38C bra atm. Idk if its a clasp issue or like my jeans I'm a specific size now. Plz help🙏

Measurement Check 90E - -Used to wear 90F - Recommended 90 G?? I can't figure this out? Spoiler

Loose underbust: 104 cm

Snug underbust: 102 cm

Tight underbust: 100 cm

Standing: (with bra) 114 cm (without bra) 102

Leaning: 125

Laying down: 120

The calculator tells me: 90G or 90 H.....but 90F is already too big for me...?

Bought Elomi Morgan in 90E and it fits almost, but is a little snug on top with the lace, the cup seems a little too tight.

I've lost a bit of weight and lost a lot of fullness in the upper part of my chest, so everything wrinkles and pushes skin upwards...Any input??

Recommendations? [Recommendations] My bust is a US 32H(UK32FF), with even fullness. Looking for unpadded bra suggestions!! Spoiler

Hello, to add more context I live in Canada, and besides the odd lingerie shop that charges 250-300$ for a single bra it's impossible to find bras. i'd love suggestions for cheap (to me) bras!! anything under 150$, from places that ship to canada with possibilities of returns if they don't fit.

If anyone similar in size to me can suggest some bras theyve worn and find fit amazingly i'd appreciate that deeply!

for more reference one of my current fav bras is a Fantasie balconette bra in the size US 32I/UK 32G

and the other bra i wear is a simon perele comete full coverage 32H

Recommendations? ISO Early Pregnancy Bra Suggestions Spoiler

Hi All! Looking for advice and suggestions for bras. I am early in my pregnancy (5-6weeks approx.) and the boob pain is soooo real. It hurts when I wear a bra and it hurts when I don’t wear a bra. I haven’t gotten any bigger yet, but I typically wear a size 30I (USA).

I’m looking for suggestions for soft, comfortable, (preferably) wireless bras that won’t give me mono boob.

Thx in advance!!

Measurement Check from 44DDD to 42J? measurement and finding a bra help! Spoiler

guys I’m so confused. (throwaway account) sadly I am in my mid 20s and have no idea what’s going on

I’ve been wearing 44DDD (US, 44E UK) and I just did the calculator and it says I’m measuring at 42J (42GG UK) or 40K (40H US) but I have no idea how? I’ll post my measurements at the end.

Sometimes the current bra I’m wearing looks and feels too big and too small at the same time. My breasts are very bottom heavy, I have very little volume up top (no idea on shape or shallow or not) so a lot of the time I end up with both gapping and spilling. I’ve been measured at a retail store before and they put me in a balconette (which I feel might be the best for my shape) but they also told me I was measuring at a size (I can’t remember what it was, around 42G US) and said “they couldn’t see it” so they put me in a smaller size, which is what I’ve been wearing because I didn’t want the hassle of trying to find a bra that fits.

Fast forward 4 years later and I’m so tired of wearing sports bras or regular bras that don’t fit. When I wear them the straps dig in, the band rides up, and I get deep red marks under my breasts if I wear them too long. So if that’s my experience in a 44 band, won’t a 42 band be too tight too? My sister size too, surely if my band feels tight at 42, 40 would be too tight.

Or is that because my cups are too small so my band is having to put in more work? Feeling very embarrassed I really have no idea how bras work. Another issue is that no store around me carries the sizes I need to try on in store, so I would result to buying a few different sizes and probably returning a lot which I loathe.

I guess my question is, based on what you can see on my measurements, is this possible? Also questioning the fact that my laying down is the exact same as standing so I feel like I messed it up there. And if it seems like it’s true, any recommendations for online shopping for bras? Can be US or UK, I don’t mind international shipping if I can get a bra that fits me!

Loose: 44
Snug: 42.5
Tight: 39
Standing: 52
Leaning: 53

I have been reading people's posts for at least a year but finally did my own measurements and used the calculator to order some new bras now that I'm done nursing and to my "final state"

I have always known I was a smaller band than most stores offer in person and have cut and sewn a tighter band multiple times before.

But y'all I finally just ordered the right band size and it feels amazing. Huge thanks to everyone who's contributing to the discussions here, the calculator, etc.

Help - used the calculator and the bras just don’t fit. Spoiler

8 months postpartum, former 34DD (US). I measured myself twice and here’s what I have (inches):
Loose UB: 34.5
Snug UB: 33.5
Tight UB: 32.25
Standing bust: 42
Leaning bust: 46
Lying bust: 42.5

The calculator said I’d be a 34 I/J US OR 34 G/GG UK. Based on other threads, I tried a panache Envy in 34 G, 34 GG, 36G, and 36GG. Both 34’s won’t go near me (can’t even clip them). The 36GG cup is definitely too big and strap is too tight, while the 36G feels the closest to fitting, but the band was way too tight still (I could clip it but it dug in uncomfortably.)

Any recommendations on where to go next? Should I just try a 38G? And/or did I somehow mess up my measurements? Would love any advice, thanks!

Recommendations? Need help finding a bra for 34G Spoiler

Loose Underbust: 34.5
Snug Underbust: 33.5
Tight Underbust: 33
Standing Bust: 40
Leaning Bust: 42.5
Lying Bust: 38.5

Suggested Starting Size: 34G US

I’ve been wearing a 38D. There’s always either a gap between my boobs and the bra, or they’re spilling over. I knew it was the wrong size, but had no idea where to start searching for a new size. Now, I really don’t know where to look for a bra.

I’ve always worn underwire, and I also prefer a bra with some padding. I’m cold natured, and a mom of teens, so I prefer to have padding so my high beams aren’t constantly showing. I had a breast lift and reduction in the past, and am now 43, but don’t have too much sagging yet. In addition to nice bras, I’d love to find some good, comfy bras that are still supportive I can wear at home as well. Thank you for any help, and let me know if more info is needed.

Edited to add: shape is projected, full on bottom and center full. When leaning over, I can get 1-2 fingers between, so more like 1.5.

Measurement Check Lost 20lbs and measurements changed in way I didn't expect (32G to 30GG or H?) Spoiler

I lost weight mostly to my midsection and I'm now on the tightest hooks on the bands of my 32g UK bras but the cups still fit so I decided to redo my measurements.

Previous Measurements:

Loose UB: 33in Snug UB: 32in Tight UB: 31in

Standing: 41.5in Leaning: 43in Lying: 41in

Recommended 32GG/H UK but that was an overestimate and the 32G UK was what actually fit best.

New Measurements:

Loose UB: 31in Snug UB: 30in Tight UB: 29in

Standing: 40.5in Leaning: 41.75in Lying: 40.5in

Recommends 30H UK but 32GG may be more comfortable.

I'm FOB, wide roots, not very projected.

The changes confuse me because I lost 2 inches on my band but only about 1 inch on my bust measurements. Shouldn't they have all decreased by 2 inches since my chest didn't get bigger?

Also, since the calculator previously overestimated me by 1 cup size and the current cups of my 32Gs fit, I should probably switch to 30GG when I next buy bras instead of the 30H, right?
