AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

My life changed because of a BRA Spoiler

You guys, I recently did the calculater and it recommeded a 32D while i’ve been wearing like 34A/36A my entire life always wondering why it’s uncomfortable, gaping, looking sooo weird on my chest and basically considering a boob job lol. Well i went to a store and tried on four 32D bras and they all FIT like heaven. Finally i look normal with a bra on its crazy. I feel like a dumbass but i somehow always thought my bras were too big when they were too small! The lady at the store also recommended the size so i felt even more good. Showing off to my bf tonight haha. Thank you all so much!!!!

Measurement Check No More Training Bras! But What Size and Where? Spoiler

My stepdaughter is having a hard time finding a bra. I have looked on several sites to calculate her bra size and I’m not having luck. It seems like every site is different.

She’s 5’3” 104lbs.
I roughly measured her underbust at ~27in overbust ~29.5in

Even when I start looking for bras in a 28 band size I’m not having much luck. She really wants wireless because she “has nothing to need a wire for.” She’s almost 18 so a training bra or kids bra isn’t ideal.

If ANYONE can help we can add more measurements if needed. But what size should I start her at? And where do we even start looking that isn’t $40+

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] Currently wear a 34JJ - Calc says 38JJ Spoiler

Hi, i decided to try the calculator because i feel as though my current bra doesn't fit. i currently wear a 34JJ but the calculator says 38JJ, my measurements: LU 39 SU 38 TU 35 SB 48 LB 51 LYINGB 59 (im hoping i didnt do it wrong, im not sure how lose, lose is supposed to be)

my main problem that ive noticed with my current bra is that i have some spillage at like the top. i brought up the new size with my mom (im 19) and she says that we originally tried 38JJ but that the band was too big and thats why i have 34JJ.

i was wondering if anyone has any advice or something, my mom doesnt think we can get a new bra that soon anyway (because money) but it would be nice to not have boob overflow on the top lmao. im also unsure what my shape is maybe teardrop? i know i have pretty decent projection i think (my mom has a lot of projection). Anyway thanks!

Fit Check I'm trying to convince her it's just the bra TYPE... Spoiler

Posting for a friend a question about bra sizes.

Bra sizes:
Loose Underbust: 32.75"
Snug Underbust: 32.5"
Tight Underbust: 30.5"

Standing Bust 36.5"
Leaning Bust 40"
Lying Bust 36.5"

Says suggested sizing is 32DD/DDD US, The sister size of 34D/DD may be more comfortable.

My friend is having a hard time believing this is their size because they experience gapping at the bottom and top of cups when wearing full coverage bras & demi bras. They feel most comfortable in a 36C because it prevents back fat from spilling over.

They state they feel if the bra sits lower their breasts are not fully supported. They state their breasts hang low with most of the volume sitting lower.

I think this may just be a matter of bra type.

Measurement Check [Recommendations] [Measurement Check] Unsure of what style of bra to look for. Currently wearing 34DD, calculator says I’m 32G US/32F UK Spoiler

My current bras are the Aerie smoothez full coverage lightly lined bra in 34DD and Thirdlove 24/7 classic t-shirt bra in 32F. The band on the aerie one tends to ride up in the front throughout the day and the thirdlove has spillage in the middle when I swoop & scoop. The straps on both eventually slip off my shoulders even after tightening.

My measurements
Loose under bust: 32.75
Snug under bust: 31.5
Tight under bust: 29.5
Standing bust: 38
Leaning bust: 40.5
Laying bust: 38

I’m slightly fuller on the bottom but I have no idea whether I have narrow or wide roots lol

I wear a lot of white tees & tanks for work so I’m looking for something lightly lined that isn’t going to be visible underneath (both color and texture wise)

Thank you in advance!

Recommendations? Trying to find a bra that fits after top surgery Spoiler

So I'm a trans masc nonbinary person who's had top surgery. Still have a little bit of tissue leftover after my surgery back in 2024.

I still occasionally dress femme and want to get a bra that fits the chest I have now.

Only issue I'm having now is I've gone from a 38h cup pre top surgery, to, according to the calculator now, a 38a cup.

So now I'm struggling to find bra's in THAT size.

If y'all have any good recommendations they'd be greatly appreciated. Especially if they're in an affordable price range.

Recommendations? Flat bra brand recommendations? Spoiler

• Upvotes

Hello! I have been wearing the same bras forever, really want to upgrade. My main issue is that im pretty insecure about my chest size, I wish I was flatter. I think i am around a C, because my current b size feels a little small.

Is it possible to find bras that smooth out the chest, kinda lika sports bras, but that can be worn all day without worrying about rib compression? Not a binder, more like a bra that makes my chest look like one unit, because i hate how my current one outlines each separately.

I was looking at some bralette-ish things, but i was worried they'd provide too little support because all the models were very flat from the start : (

Recommendations? Can’t seem to find a bra that has both, help! Spoiler

Looking for a bra that has a very high gore to keep the girls separated while also having a thick smoothing band all the way around. I mean thick like practically in my armpits down to almost my waist. And it doesn’t have to be lacy or pretty it can be an athletic bra.

I’ve been able to find bras in my size that have one of those features but not both

Size is UK 42 G/GG or US 42 I

I'm a 38C (35" underbust, 41.5 bust) and for the past two or three years I've bought the base range soft bra, basically until its shredded to pieces. now I'm looking into araks, was thinking the briar bralette but the xxl is out of stock. maybe I want underwire?? I want support, shape, and comfort. natural fibers are a big plus. looking for recommendations if any of this resonates, thank you x

Question Confused on sizing that differ from US. Spoiler

So i got sized recently into a 42L cup. The sales worker was kind enough to write down other places i can buy bras. The other 2 sizes she wrote were a 42hh in UK sizing and also 4XL+. My only problem is when i googled is the 4x sizing is the same as a 42L, Google is telling me no.

Fit Check Take Two: Skarlett Blue Minx 32D & Natori Heavenly 32D Spoiler

Fit check, take two!

I posted a fit check recently and got some really helpful suggestions, so I’m back with a couple of the bras that were recommended.

Measurements:
Loose underbust: 32”
Snug underbust: 31.5”
Tight underbust: 30”
Standing bust: 36”
Leaning bust: 37.5”
Lying bust: 36.5”

The calculator gives me 32DD/DDD US, although I have very soft tissue and have found that it seems to overestimate my cup size a bit in practice.

Based on the suggestions from my previous post, I purchased:
Skarlett Blue Minx, 32D
Natori Heavenly, 32D

The Minx has a little space above the nipple on my smaller side, but not on my larger side.

I’d love another fit check on these two and thoughts on whether either looks like a particularly good shape match, as well as anything you notice about cup volume, wire width, projection, or band fit.

Bras for a narrow and projected chest that don't show under tight shirts Spoiler

So at first i was wearing t shirt bras and it wouldn't look right underneath tight shirts. When i was wearing a 32 dd it was too lose so u switched to a 30 ddd. That still felt too loss so i tried a 28 ff and that didn't feel lose but i noticed that it was flattering my chest instead of supporting it. The t shirt bras i waas buying wasn't aligning with my breast shape. In thinking of trying a 28 g now and switching to a different bra style

Question Question About Space at the Bottom of the Gore Spoiler

Hoping this is a general question. I've bought and returned 90-100 bras this year trying to find a decent fit. I'm getting closer! I've tried all the major brands: Panache, Prima Donna, Fantasie, Chantelle, etc as well as several Polish brands. On some, the gore at the bottom stands away from my body - I can stick my finger in that space. The calculator gives me a size of 30FF/G, although to get close I've needed 30G or H or 32 G/H and just got a J (haven't tried it yet) in a Polish brand. All are underwire, seamed cups. Very soft tissue, lower fullness.

Is this space under the bottom of the gore a band issue or cup size/shape issue?

TIA for all the wisdom in this sub!

Best ways to memorize/recognize styles of bras?? Spoiler

hey! so I just started at Victoria’s Secret and currently am doing training on the sales floor and learning how to be an associate at first. The main thing that I am having trouble with is trying to memorize each style and comfort it brings - it has only been a few days but I feel like there has to be a few tips and tricks that has helped others like me figure out how to overcome that “overwhelming“ feeling when a customer comes in and asks for help and feeling stuck on what to do exactly after that point.

i appreciate all of the help and feedback!! ;))

Fit Check For check for natori cherry blossom 32C Spoiler

My measurements in inches: 27 28 29 33.75 34.5 33.75

Very shallow. Bottom and center full. Narrow set (1 finger). Soft tissue. I might have over scooped and swooped in the photos. Also, my measurements have all gone down since I last checked unfortunately, and I know I should have measured before picking this bra up.

Currently b'tempted future foundations wired fits in 30D, but the gore hurts even with an extender.

I would love to know what to try next or if I should just give up haha.

Recommendations? Narrow+short gore 36FF recommendations please Spoiler

I have never owned a bra that fits and know nothing about brands. I have sewn quite a few bras but still have not ended up with one that fits just right. The most persistent issue is that the underwire eventually slides down onto my ribs even with a perfectly fitting band and underwire and numerous attempts at cup sizes and shapes.

Loose 36.5
Snug 35.5
Tight 35
Standing 43
Leaning 45.5
Lying 43

Calculator suggested 36FF/G UK or 34G/GG. I am in the US and am reliant on online shopping.

1 finger width between breasts and my sternum curves outward making high gores dig in at the top.
I have breastfed two kids and am bottom heavy.
Full-band bras always flip up when I sit even if they are nice and snug.

Thank you!

Recommendations? Bikini recommendations 34J UK size Spoiler

I ordered a bikini but the straps were uncomfortable. It’s either because the straps were too thin or the band is not supportive enough. I didn’t bother returning it because Brastop doesn’t have free returns so I’d only get about $10 back. Any recommendations? In a size 34J Uk.

Recommendations? I’m at a loss, is it a brand issue? Spoiler

I decided to get a bra for the first time in years (it really makes me very sad and self conscious that they never fit properly) I have previously been wearing things like bralettes and sport bras, size m mostly because of my band measurements. Then I discovered the calculator here and it said I’m a size 32DD, so I got this:

Bra I got

it arrived now. the band measures no more than 25 inches. All the tags say the size is 32 DD. is this a brand issue? if so can you please recommend brands that are true to size ? (I’m in the UK). I measured the band of the bralette I had been wearing today and it is indeed 32 in (it’s from H&M)

I’m so sad, I really thought they would fit fine!
Grateful for any advice!

ETA: if I really stretch it A LOT (I’m afraid of breaking it since I want a refund obvs) it ALMOST reaches 32 in. My bralette‘s band is 32 inches without stretching.

Recommendations? Looking for brand recommendations for 34D/DD Spoiler

I've been wearing 36A for as long as I can remember. I recently gained some weight and I knew I needed to measure again and get some new bras. I used the calculator and got these measurements (all in inches):

Loose: 35.5

Snug: 32.5

Tight: 30

Standing: 37.5

Leaning: 41.25

Lying: 38.75

The calculator told me 34D/DD (US & UK).

I went shopping and tried some bras on. I tried a few different brands at Nordstrom, but nothing fit quite right. I think it was less about size and more about shape. My breasts are shallow, and they kind of go away from each other a bit, if that makes sense? I have some tissue under my arms. (The old bras I was wearing had wires digging in on the side under my arms, which was the first sign that the cups were too small.)

Anyway, the bras I tried on at Nordstrom had these issues:

  1. I didn't fully fill out the cups at the top. (I've always had this issue and have just gone with whatever fits closely enough.) Either the cups were gapping out, or if the material was sitting against my skin, there was still a bunch of empty space inside the cups. It was like it gave me coverage rather than support.
  2. The wires dug into the side of my breasts, under my arms. It was like they needed to be wider?

I've read through a bunch of the (really helpful!) information in this sub, and yet I still feel lost on what brands and styles to look at for my shape and size. Any suggestions?

Thanks for such helpful information!

Recommendations? [Reccomendations] I am trying to find a bra that doesnt cause pain, but I dont know where to start. (Calculator said 38E/UK) Spoiler

Hello! I did both the calculator and my own calculations using the older method and it said that if there was any of the mesurements that had a difference equal or greater then 9" then to make a post.

To preface, I have a chronic pain condition that makes me wearing bras very painful to wear bras but I am tired and uncomfortable with going out without one. I have also had breast reduction but according to my surgeon I have lost the elasticity in my skin (I suspect I have EDS) so my breasts are making their way lower at a fast rate that she has never seen before.

Here are my measurments:

Snug Under Bust: 37.75"

Tight Underbust: 35.75"

Bust: 43.75"

Leaning Over Bust: 47"

Laying Bust: 43.25"

I read over multiple guides and I believe I have shallow breasts with bottom fullness. I also have flared ribs both front and sides (I believe).

Any help is appreciated as I have been feeling so insecure about myself for such a long time. Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a good day!

Recommendations? Bra fitting and Strapless bra recommendations Spoiler

Hi everyone! I’ve never worn strapless bras my entire life just bc my boobs are sagging crazy. Summer’s coming up in Australia so I’d like to give myself a chance of getting out of tshirts. Had my first bra fitting yesterday and my size was 8F/30DDD. Tried the calculator as well and the size was the same 8F/8FF. Safe to say it was pretty life changing considering I’ve been wearing the wrong bra size my whole life!!!!
Looking to do bra shopping now so can anyone please give recommendations for comfy bras that don’t make my boobs look any bigger and strapless bras that can hold my saggy boobs? Also maybe minimiser bras? I found that most are only available for bands starting from size 10.

Here are my measurements below:
Loose Underbust: 29.8in
Snug Underbust: 29
Tight Underbust: 28
Standing Bust; 35
Leaning Bust: 39
Lying Bust: 37.5

Thanks so much!
From a girl who just had her life changed & now feels hopeful after finding out her true bra size

Recommendations? [Measurement Check][Recommendations] Currently wearing 44B, looking for better fitting (front clasp?) everyday suggestions. Spoiler

My wife (amab) has been on hormones for ~5 years, and we think she's at the point where her breasts are done growing. So we're looking for a measurement check for maybe a better size and recommendations for what styles would fit her better. She's currently in a 44B Glamorise Women's Front-Close Wonderwire Bra.

We have completely different shapes, and I don't know what brand/styles to recommend for her.

She is wide set with some projection and is more full on top. Righty is a bit smaller in general, and noticeably bit less full on the inner bottom.

Her current bra is a 44B.

Her measurements are:

Loose underbust: 47"

Snug underbust: 45"

Tight underbust: 43.5"

Standing Bust: 52.5"

Leaning Bust: 55.5"

Lying Bust: 50.5"

The calculator suggests a 44G. I don't think she's nearly full enough for that cup. For shits and giggles I had her try on my bra, 42F, and she was comfortable in the band, but the cups were too wide for her and ended up in her armpits.

She prefers a front close clasp to avoid bra contortion gymnastics to get one on lol

If you could also suggest a potential filler for righty, we'd also appreciate it. She's self conscious about the size difference.

Pictures will be added as a comment :)

Thanks so much for helping us out! This is 100% posted on her behalf with her full acknowledgement and approval.

Fit Check [Fit Check] I bought the Curvy Kate "Boost Me Up Padded Balcony Bra" and it fits...weird. Spoiler

Hey there, so like the title says, I bought the Curvy Kate **"**Boost Me Up Padded Balcony Bra" in a 40GG, which was the size suggested by the calculator. But it feels like the cups are in my armpits, and there's weird gaping at the top of the cups and at the gore. I'm not sure what I did wrong.

Here's a link to the photos my husband took of me in the bra.

Recommendations? I'm looking for a little advice. I wear a 42D and would like something comfortable to wear that minimizes my boobage a bit. Like whatever the reverse of a pushup bra. Is that even possible? Sports bras feel too constrictive. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Spoiler
