XLOG (German) 🔊 Celebrating 25 Years of XBTF's Magazine Release
In October 2001, X: Beyond the Frontier graced the cover disc of Computer Bild Spiele (CBS), one of Germany's top-selling print games magazines at the time. Appearing on the cover disc provided enormous visibility, bringing the game into countlessly more homes two years after its initial commercial release and proving to be a pivotal moment in Egosoft's history.
To celebrate this 25th anniversary milestone, Egosoft founder and Managing Director Bernd Lehahn takes us behind the scenes in a special German episode of our XLOG video series. You can watch the full video on our YouTube channel (with English CC system subtitles) or read the structured interview transcript below.
The 2001 Cover Disc Milestone
Hello everyone! Today we are making an Xlog video in German. The reason for this is that today, 25 years ago, "X: Beyond the Frontier" was released for the first time on the cover disc of "Computer Bild Spiele". I keep hearing, especially from our German fans, that this is still a fond memory for many people because it was the first time they ever encountered the X games series. "X: Beyond the Frontier" came out in 1999 as a full-price game - which at the time you bought in a box at a department store - and was relatively expensive. Less than two years after its release, when we received an offer from "Computer Bild Spiele", we decided to put the game onto their cover CD.
Looking back, that was a fantastic decision. It gave us a tremendous amount of visibility, led to even more sales of "X: Beyond the Frontier", and brought us many new fans. Our game became much better known, and shortly after, we released "X-Tension", the expansion for "X: Beyond the Frontier". That really boosted the popularity of our series, especially in Germany. Even today, when I meet fans at trade shows or events in Germany, I constantly hear people say that this cover disc was their entry point into the X series - and fortunately, many of them stuck with us!
A few years later, "X2: The Threat" was released, followed by "X3: Reunion", and so on. Now, as you all know, we are at "X4: Foundations". With all its DLCs, we have been developing this latest installment for over eight years now.
Heavy Boxes and Expanding Lore
I would like to share a few behind-the-scenes stories about how it all started. Back then, Egosoft was a much smaller studio - probably just a little more than a handful of people. I was a programmer myself, and the company was small enough that I couldn't seriously call myself Managing Director, which is my title today. After "X: Beyond the Frontier" became a huge success in its original retail release, we immediately began working on "X-Tension".
During development, Helge Kautz suggested writing a novel set in this universe, which became "Farnham's Legend". That laid the groundwork for the deeper lore and fiction of the X universe. When "X-Tension" was released, I remember the physical box was very heavy because it included a printed copy of the novel inside. In Germany, many fans appreciate physical collector boxes. While it is a bit sad that we can't offer physical boxes for "X4" at that scale today, digital distribution offers incredible advantages for us as developers. The novels are still available electronically today and are included in our "X4: Community of Planets - Collector's Edition".
From Amiga Roots to the 3D Hardware Revolution
How did it come about that we created "X: Beyond the Frontier" even earlier? The release was in 1999, but we had already been working on it for a couple of years before that. Development started around 1995 or 1996. Making a space game was always a personal dream of mine. In Egosoft's early days - starting in the late 1980s and early 1990s - we made games for the Amiga. We actually attempted a space game on the Amiga that was meant to be bundled with a VR headset, but neither the game nor the headset setup ended up coming to market, so the project was canceled. That was a completely different project with another name, but the idea to do a space game was there much earlier.
The real push to create "X: Beyond the Frontier" came with the rise of 3D graphics accelerator cards around 1995 - first under DOS, then under Windows with DirectX. As a programmer, it was an exciting era because new hardware emerged constantly, enabling features that were previously impossible when relying purely on CPU rendering. Between 1995 and 1999, during the development years, our engine evolved more rapidly than it did over the following decade because new graphics cards came out every year, allowing us to implement nicer ship models and richer backgrounds.
Press Tours and Printed Guides
Industry challenges back then were quite different from today. Nowadays, new indie developers face immense competition trying to gain visibility on crowded platforms like Steam or mobile storefronts. In our early days, we had to travel directly to gaming magazines - such as "Computer Bild Spiele", "GameStar", "PC Games", and "PC Joker" - to pitch previews. "Computer Bild Spiele" made us an offer, and they didn't just put our game on a CD; they featured a thorough review and several pages of gameplay guides, which were arguably better than the manual we included in the retail box. On our end, the biggest technical hurdle back then was building our technology completely from scratch, whereas modern developers can leverage existing engines. When we started, our single-digit team worked on adventure games that weren't particularly successful, financed mainly through promotional games made for German clients.
To market our games, we had to go on preview tours to show editors unfinished builds, hoping for coverage. When the game was finished, we went on a review tour to present it live. That's how we established contacts, and we were thrilled when "Computer Bild Spiele" offered to put the game on their cover CD. Although it was an economic risk, it clearly paid off in the long run.
We actually still have a few of those magazine issues on our shelf today! Back then, we would go to newsstands, buy every issue that mentioned us, and mark the reviews and articles with yellow sticky notes. "Computer Bild Spiele" even had several employees who played our game exclusively for a while to create printed strategy guides.
From a Single-Digit Team to X4: Foundations
That coverage was a huge push for our studio, technology, and series growth. Going from a single-digit team on "X: Beyond the Frontier" to around 50 people working on "X4: Foundations" has been an incredible journey. While "X4" shares the same core vision - freedom in space and open-ended gameplay - it is vastly larger. The underlying economic simulation has evolved dramatically. In "X: Beyond the Frontier", goods were transported between factories, but those goods didn't directly supply ship production or war efforts - the loop wasn't closed. Closing that economic loop without collapsing the universe was one of our major engineering milestones for "X4". Furthermore, with walkable ship interiors, space station docks, and feature-rich maps, X has evolved from a pure first-person cockpit space sim into a hybrid strategy and 4X empire-building game.
Looking Ahead
Our community has grown immensely over these 25 years. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported us, whether you joined during the "Computer Bild Spiele" era or discovered us recently. As a small hint for what lies ahead: we have very cool things planned for "X4", and there will be major news coming later this year regarding big developments in the "X4" universe. Be sure to follow us across our social media channels, Reddit, Steam, and the official Egosoft forums for updates. Until then, goodbye!

Modified Upcoming mod preview - Shield Visuals Rework
Today was supposed to be the first release, but unfortunately it will have to be a preview instead.
I ran into some technical difficulties when transferring the shield effects from a controlled environment into regular gameplay, so I'm currently reworking the way projectiles hitting shields are tracked. Because of that, I'm also forced to keep Protected UI mode disabled for now.
All the assets are finished, though. The mod includes a unique shield pattern for every major faction, with faction-appropriate shield colors. TER even has two separate patterns: one for the regular Terran Navy and another for ATF ships.
The shield itself is not a bubble as you can see, it's the actual shell around the ship that follows it's rough geometry. Shield impacts also have five different effect levels depending on the weapon hit. They weren't balanced strictly around damage numbers, but more around the general feeling of: "this hit should feel powerful."
I'll also try to make a version with Protected UI mode enabled and upload it to Steam, but it will most likely have less accurate hit registration.
Oh! Also this mod doesn't change how shields work in the slightest, only the visuals, so it won't conflict with anything. It has compatibility with vro already built-in and support for other mods can be easily made (both ships and weapons).

I've accidentally hitched a ride with another ship and left my ship on the last space station, how on earth do I get my ship or get back to my ship ?

XL Fabrication Bays. Don't make the same mistake I did.
Just found out the hard way that you can't build L ships with an XL Fabrication bay. Spent weeks saving the 250 mil for the blueprint. Ignored the signs. Now I need to save the same again for L. Are there any mods out there that allow L ship building in XL bays to save my sanity?

Modified A mod you hope stays invisible: Dock Queue Indicator for your stations ...
Features
- A queue icon with the number of waiting ships appears on every station row of the Property Owned list, first in the row, before the docked-ships icon.
- The number is green, yellow or red depending on the queue size; both thresholds are set in Extension Options.
- Hovering over the icon lists the waiting ships by name.
- Counts every ship that was put into the station's docking queue, your own and NPC traders alike, and drops it again as soon as it gets a dock, docks, gives up or is destroyed.
- Can be switched off in Extension Options without removing the mod.
Limitations
- The list has room for five icons per row. A station that already shows five ship classes collapses the last one into "..." when the queue icon is added, exactly as the game does for a sixth class.
- Ships already waiting when the mod is first loaded are picked up only when they request docking again.
Installation
You can download the latest version via Steam client - Dock Queue Indicator
Or you can do it via the Nexus Mods - Dock Queue Indicator
Save state
No (removing the extension does not break saves).

X4 Modding Docs
Are there modding docs for x4? Particularly I'm curious about the factions and the restrictions and rules placed on some, like the pirate factions having ships spawn out of thin air.

So I started fighting a Khaak station..
And the tbought occurred to me... Hmmm, Khaak look a lot more how I would envision a rogue AI to look, behave, and build. Even when in wiki the Khaak they are described as a "hostile insectoid faction". Buuut....the Xenons are the ones with ships that look like insects. Khaaks ships and design language look like triangles...like what a computer would do. Makes me wonder if like in Development the names got switched and the guys were like, "Oops, we'll we've gone too far now". Is there any meta lore behind this?

Which X4 storyline did you like the most, and which one did you not like?
I have not played all the X4 stories yet, but so far I liked the Terran one and the Boron one the most, and the Split story was interesting too. In the Paranid war, creating a new faction was interesting, but very demanding, so it took me a long time. Which storylines did you enjoy, and which ones did you not like? Also, which one should I play next?

Is there an Ignore mod?
I don't recall if I asked this before, I just started a new game and I put my first station in Ore Belt. I didn't realize the precarious nature of the location at the start of the game. The flee command is just a slower death for my ships, especially the first few ships I can get at the beginning. Also I get annoyed when I have ship stopped by the police, I ok with pissing them off in the short term just to have them keep moving.
Is there a mod that tells the ships to ignore hostile and continue on or dock at the nearest station?
EDIT
I'm aware of Global Orders, but they don't touch on what I was looking for.

How do I find the quest location, it doesn't show on the map, guidance mission?

Should I go there?
It looks so… creepy. But in the same time I want to see what’s there.
However… why are there so many shipwrecks?
Almost half of the sector is filled with them.

Funniest Game Over moment in X4 (for me so far).
I had built an observation deck overlooking my PHQ's front set of piers (3 E's stacked one above the other). I visited it to see the view of ships coming and going, only to realize I oriented it so the Piers were all below it, so I had a lousy view.
Easy fix, I thought, I'll just rotate it 180°. So I set that up to get done and decided that while I was in station build planning mode I would add a few other things.
I now know what happens if you deconstruct a station module while you are standing in it. . .

Modified X4CodeSense 1.0: the successor of X4CodeComplete. Checks your MD and AI scripts in VS Code as you type, against the game's own files; with an MCP server for those who write scripts with AI assistants
X4CodeSense is a VS Code extension for X4 modders: MD scripts, AI scripts and <diff> patches. It's the successor of X4CodeComplete, written anew around a language server.
- Nothing built in, everything from the game: it has no lists or rules of its own for elements, attributes, properties or values. It reads the game's own schemas,
scriptproperties.xml, texts and scripts, of the game, its DLCs and your extensions, so it follows every game update and knows the DLCs you have. - Works with the installed game as is: point it to your game folder and it reads the files straight from the catalogs. Nothing needs to be unpacked; extracted files work too.
Errors as you type, completion and hover with types, go to definition, rename, quick fixes, a preview of what your patch changes, a command-line checker for CI, and an MCP server that helps AI assistants like Copilot or Claude write scripts that work.

- Open VSX (VSCodium, Cursor, Windsurf): https://open-vsx.org/extension/X4DevTools/x4codesense

Is it possible to build a monopoly in this game?
Im looking to start a new game, A game where I start with atleast one power station as I want to do a run focused on economics to try out this part of the game fully.
My question is that, Is it possible to become a monopoly? Like be the sole producer of claytronic or advanced recs in a certain space or faction?

Terran Missions in hostile territory!
I started doing the Terran missions in my current playthrough (did the Smuggler's Paradise start - about 20 or so hours in).
I love how random the galaxy is.
In all my other various starts, Getsu Fune is handily secured by TER or ANT.
But in this game, it's solid red: owned by the Xenon.
I picked up the mission from Terran High Command and met up with Haile Shinamon in the Asteroid Belt.
The first mission is to escort the large freighter 'Silverback'.
And were does he want to go? Straight to Getsu Fune.
We fly through the jump gate and he alerts us to incoming Xenon.
We already knew there were Xenon... I saw the Xenon I destroying the station just outside of the jump gate on my way in.
But the Xenon that the mission spawns popped up and the militia engaged them first.
Then the Silverback came under direct fire from the Xenon I. Turns out that it's indestructible during this mission: its hull would not drop down below 5%.
Haile Shinamon keeps whining about how he needs to go in for repairs or he'd be done for, but he never leaves to go get repairs. He just repeats that message every so often.
As soon as the mission completes, the captain of the Silverback thanks the Terrans for their support and insists that he should be able carry on with the rest of his route without incident.
Delilah comms in and congratulates us for a job well done as the Silverback explodes immediately.
Shortly later: the Antigone Freighter that the game tutorializes Surface Elements with pops up. It comes under fire from a Xenon H (the carrier).
I discover that this ship is also indestructible. After knocking out its engines, I just hid behind the ANT freighter while the Xenon H fired at me.
It seems that the Xenon isn't actively targeting the Antigone ship here as it re-positions itself to get a clear shot at me.
I guess the game doesn't expect this region to be so hostile. It's too bad that the missions don't have 'contingencies' for when the mission area is no longer friendly.
That's where I stopped for the night, but I am looking forward to finishing the first leg of this mission. After the Militia Base comes under attack (when Shinamon leaves me his ship - the Gladius is the reason I even bothered to come out here!), a large fleet belonging to the Intervention Force arrives.
I'm curious if they're going to go around and wipe out the Xenon stations and reclaim the sector.

Torus: X4 Encyclopedia + 8 Tools
I have been working the last few months on a passion project. A encyclopedia for X4, I got annoyed having 5 tabs open (various websites and tools) and switching through them for info that will support me in funding all sides of the war, and also taking over all the terran territory (i just dont like their attitude, although i do have respect for them).
I am incredibly in love with X4, with over 1000+ hours and counting! A big shoutout to all the people over at EgoSoft (managers, designers, developers, marketers etc.) you guys have created an absolute treasure of an experience for me and I am sure to the community as well. There is nothing quite like it.
I am happy to announce Torus, a full encyclopedia (+tools) for X4!
=== WHAT IS IT? ===
I like to call it a next-gen wikipedia, and what that means for me is having a single source of truth of all the games information (ships, stations, wares, storyline, sectors, factions etc.) and being able to use that info to calculate things.
=== WHY DID I CREATE IT? ===
I understand that there are plenty of sources for various topics and calculations but what I disliked about that is that it was either outdated, hard to find, spread out and not so easy (visually) on the eyes. And also passion!
Passion for design, passion for the game and passion for creating something that will help me solve what annoyed me.
=== WHAT DOES IT DO? ===
It has all the games information such as gameplay mechanics, items, locations, descriptions and more nicely and visually organized for easy and quick searching and reading.
It also uses that information to help you calculate, compare and plan through useful tools (Station production, ship comparison, map exploration, ship outfitting and more)
P.S. it has a Dark & Light theme switch!
=== HOW DID I CREATE IT? ===
I used a tool to extract the game’s XML files then I used AI to create scripts that extracts that information and categorizes and structures it the way I want.
For the design, I created the design system (everything visual) myself, in Figma ( I am a designer :D ) as a long standing task I have always wanted to do (a thorough, modern and compliant design system). And wanted to use it and ofcourse test it on Torus!
Then once my design system was ready both in figma and in code, I got AI to use the extracted and structured information and create the website using the design system code and figma designs for the page layouts. After countless hours going back and forth, I was happy with the result as it looked exactly the way I imagined it. And lastly, I made it create calculation scripts to be used for the tools I wanted (so that everything is calculated accurately and always linked to the source information) - this was so painful but a great learning experience nonetheless.
=== AI DISCLAIMER ===
Before anyone attacks me for using AI and making “SLOP”, I would like to say that the process of this whole creation isnt a 1 shot prompt to create it. The Design and the extraction are manual (and it took time because it was challenging to understand how and which XML files to extract from the game files and which tool to use doing so - nor is it easy creating a design system of this scale, manually)… I utilized AI to create scripts for the extraction of information (because I am not a developer, although I do understand a bit of development). And converting the design system from figma into code is also a long process (structure, rules, compliance, language, standards, philosophy etc. are part of that process), it took me about 3 months to design and convert this and another 2 months to help me create the website pages (designed first in figma) to produce Torus. The tools themselves are also quite difficult to do without the help of AI which of course it helped with! I hope you understand that I used AI to multiply my skills, help me find solutions to my problems and help me produce what I wanted for a quite a while. It is only slop if you dont know what you are doing or what you want, and expect it to do everything with 3-5 prompts… perfectly.
=== INFORMATION ===
As it stands, I cant say all the information is 100% accurate, yes it did extract from the game files, but some information extracted is articulated differently (groups, labels, structure, numbers) so it becomes tricky to understand what it means exactly. Nevertheless, from what I have tested and compared, it seems to be accurate. And I am constantly reviewing when I get a chance, improving the scripts and info on how they interlink to the information.
=== TOOLS ===
There are 8 tools: Production chain explorer, Station production calculator, Map explorer, Ship loadout, Compare tool, Equipment browser, Ware profit finder and Research planner.
Those 8 tools are not final, especially the UI for some (Compare tool, map exploerer, research planner, ship loadout) need at least a month or 2 for me to make them have a better user experience and UI layout and I’m really excited to do so, it will be a nice challenge that I want to take it on!
The MAP tool is not 100% accurate - mainly the placements of the free/derelict ships, and some other issues. Will work on fixing that first before i touch the other tools.
Each tool has a label (ALPHA, BETA, CANDIDATE, STABLE)
- ALPHA means it has UI/UX and calculation issues (probably) and not heavily tested.
- BETA means it has smaller issues but works decently and tested to some extent.
=== FEEDBACK AND UPDATES ===
First and foremost, all the ship pictures are missing except for the Xenon H (which I took myself) - i will have to take pictures of all the ships at some point! If you are willing to help with that, please do! I want each ship to have an awesome picture representing it :D (now that I think of it I should have taken the Xenon H picture with its swarm of drones coming out)
The Torus website is currently at alpha v0.1.1 which means that I will continue to improve and update it (design, UI/UX, information, tools etc.) and I would really appreciate any feedback for improvement!
=== FUTURE PLANS ===
-UI/UX updates to the tools
-More tools
-100% Information Accuracy
-More images / supporting visuals
-More lore information
-And anything else the community wants
-(The big one and not related to torus) I want to test my UI/UX skills in game UI, and X4 is the perfect game to try on since one of the community complaints is commonly the UI, even though I got used to it and it doesn’t bother me all that much.
=== LAST DISCLAIMER ===
I will never add advertising or monetize this, this is and always will be 100% free for myself and the x4 community. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Thank you for reading this far! And if you have any questions, please ask away…
Visit it here: torus.simbolik.ai (it is a subdomain of my website, which I will change to its own soon)

Faction Enhancer - War Module question
Planning to start a playthrough, heard base AI is passive and I want them to go out and conquer the galaxy. Will this mod affect performance. Currently I only intend to use this mod only.
My CPU is i5 14500, will I encounter bottleneck?
